I have just spent nearly 20 minutes watching a video about North Korean public transportation with a DPRK pop soundtrack, and enjoyed every minute of it. Utterly fascinating! They are able to build and keep in service their own designs with limited resources and that's quite something.
:-) nice to read! Yes, they dont have so much, but make a good design - and important, a very good intervall at each line!
Most of the trams were old Russian and Eastern European used equipment. The older subway cars are used, from Berlin. There is new rolling stock included but you can be assured it was not built there. All imported from Communist and former communist countries.
Tram Is Tatra czech republic
@@ChrisCanary You can be assured the new trams WERE built there. They are Thongil 181 trams, they are new bodies placed on Tatra chassis. The bodies were built in the Pyongyang Bus Repair Factory that also manufactured double decker buses alongside these trams and trolleybus and tram maintenance. All new trolleybuses are built using 99% North Korean parts in their own factories, the only thing in the trolleybuses that isn't North Korean made are the steering axles that are from CHNTC, a Chinese truck manufacturer, the rest is made in North Korea. This is coming from someone who has been looking into North Korean transport for a couple of years now quite in depth. I don't understand why it is so hard for people to believe they are capable like most other countries of manufacturing their own things. None of these things are Chinese imports.
@@ChrisCanarycan confirm, the trams look just like the ones I rode on in Russia during the 90's
That moment when you realize that Pyongyang is 10x cleaner than Paris
...also cleaner like our cities. 👍

@@allynclower4629 thats right, in asian cities its cleaner. But in some chinese areas its opposite.

An important historical document. You are so lucky to have been free to make this video.
Thank you
Thanks :)
He wasn’t free to make this video without the express approval of the North Korean government. They okayed it as it only showed the Pyongyang public transport system in the best light. Anything short of that they would never have allowed him to release this film. They would have made him delete it or confiscate his equipment. This video is a one sided reality of North Korea. It’s quasi propaganda.
HoMaster Zerg you seams to be an expert, ever been to NK? I have also been there, walked on my own, no restrictions for pictures and film! I got lost alone at night. My luggage was not even opened when flying out. Your propaganda don’t work on use that have been there. Good try!
@@TheMasterhomaster Yes, I know that, and you know that. So there isn't a problem, is there? I saw empty streets, empty buildings and wondered what it all was hiding...
Man, talk about stating the obvious! Even WITH permission, such a long vid about the transport is a major achievement... Plus, there ARE little glimpses of reality there if you're quick enough to spot them.
@@bokhans I haven't been, but naturally assume that there may be restrictions and whatnot in such a place. It's my default setting! ;-)
It took me awhile to get what is bizarre with this footage... There is ZERO advertisements and other visual garbage on the street. It is so refreshing to see a city where you are not constantly bombarded by ads.
Well I'm pretty sure it ain't gonna be refreshing to live there lol
No ads but political propaganda!
In Soviet Korea, you are ads for felicity of county.
I don’t think you fully grasp the difference between a western capitalist society versus the authoritarian regime that is North Korea.
"Meh, authoritarian regime"... everyone knows NK is not a "workers paradise". And I am not defending it. I only say that a city without ads and visual looks different, nice and refreshing (even if most of the buildings are simple commieblocks)...
Its looks like USSR in of 80s. Same trams, architecture, subway, a small traffic.
Or - almost - like Poland up till the late 1980's (same trams, architecture, a small traffic except for no metro - USRR:PRL 1:0)
Pz916 They probably got the trams from USSR, I know for a fact the subway cars came from East Germany
@@contactwide No, the subway cars are former BVG cars from Berlin.
@@contactwide
I think the Tatras are from East Germany while the KT8D5K is bought new

When you realize North Korea has better transport then your city...
True words...there trams and trolleybusses running each two minutes also sundys. Today our trams are running each 30 minutes! So i surprised every visit in Pyongyang, how good the public transport are organisite! :-)
but everything else is worse
Los Angeles: what is public transport?
USA?
Those trolleys go out of electricity very often. You guys don't know that.
they should plant more trees lot of room
More trees need more money
They need it! It is important in times of crisis, when food is lacking
The people used all the trees for eating and to feed themselves during the great famines.
From what I've heard they've taken steps recently to "green" the cities more, planting flowers and trees everywhere to make it more lively.
@@SapphFire Is that _actual_ greening ☘ or _Chinese-style_ „Greening“? 🖌
I respect the visual affect outside and inside with the flowers... it shows pride in there transit system NOT to have them into mobile billboards, wrapped in advertising . Very clean and well kept. The newer trams I see here are not big and boxy but show character.
They do to have anything to advertise that's why no adverts anywhere!
There is nothing to advertise if there is no business being done...
That then tends to be a great asset-- as for the "business" not being done, the "business" is being providing good transportation without the blight of never-ending advertisements that I have to put up with in USA. They even cover the windows which diminishes the view. I recognize a positive when I see it. I give a big thumbs up to them for their efforts even under repressive "sanctions" to deal with.
@@alstondutton5850 You can't compare USA to frikkin NK. USA is the worst offender in the world if you dislike ads, its literally capitalist mekka
Right on.

Amazing. I love how the wires are so uneven the pantograph on the trams drop off and slowly bounce back up sometimes.
That seems to be for crossing the trolley lines.
@@RussianSevereWeatherVideos i don't know, here in city i live in we also have tram and trolleybus crossing and don't have any problem with the wires. If that's what you're saying.
Crossing trolley wires would be possible with insulated crossing points, necessary to prevent the plus and the minus poles of the trolley wire network from being connected through the tram wire. My guess is that such insulated crossings were undesirable (read: too expensive) for Pyongyang. At 5:00, you can clearly see that the tram wire actually goes over the trolley wires, so lowering the pantograph would indeed be necessary. Throughout the rest of the tram part of this video, there are however a few other moments where you see the pantograph lowered for seemingly no good reason. At 4:07, I could imagine a phase separator. But why at 1:49? The wire seems straight and the pantograph remains steady at some level before going up again. Hardly a 'bounce', I would say. But there is no other wire joining and no trolley line crossing...
MKT Aviation & Rail Videos thats North Korea at least they have that System in Pyongyang
I've personally never seen trolleybusses, they're a feat of engineering all on their own, I get that most of the fuel is rationed for the military, but they didn't have to go as far as to have trolleybusses.
At the very least it makes me question the entirety of the public transportation where I live now.
Edit: You know, that's a lot of cars for a country with "rationed fuel"..
Amazing. Public transport looks OK there in Pyongyang. Clean city. Thanks for showing us around. Great video 👍🏻
Thank you! Yes i like the public transport of Pyongyang...it is get modern more and more last years. :) ...they dont have so much there, but make a very good citytraffic with enviromentally transports! More modern, than a lot of european cities!

1. With the total absence of commercial advertisements, Pyongyang has an aesthetic quality of purity that cities in the rest of the world have lost and will probably never get back again.
2. It's fantastic that the Internet and UA-cam can show you places you will probably never visit.

This is utterly satisfying to watch. On the one hand, their transportation system seems to be quite good, with Trolleybuses and Trams.
On the other hand, it's so weird to see a city in such perfect optical condition, and then I also realized that there were no advertisements whatsoever, only the (probably) propaganda from the Leadership in the DPRK.
So on the places, where i stay there wasnt any advertisements - thats right. But outside of city or the bigger streets near cityborder, there are some advertisement-bords like also in our countries. :-) For example, there are also marketing for some automobiles and other. But its on some special places and not in every place inside of the city. I like this very much, so for example in our german cities every place is full of advertisement...sometimes it looks terrible.

I find it amazing that despite all the age of the vehicles and the age of the buildings around them, there is not a single piece of graffiti in sight, I saw maybe a small scratch on one of the subway trains as it was leaving but I doubt it was graffiti to be honest.
Around where I live the busses and trains are pretty much graffitied once in service (in the case of trains they were graffitied during delivery from another state in one case).
Quite a refreshing sight to be honest, historical vehicles kept in good condition.
It's probably because anyone who tries to graffiti a tram will spend the rest of their life in a labor camp, along with all their relatives.
@@ElevationStationProductions don't know. In Russia we don't send people to Gulag anymore (sadly, in some cases), but Buses, Trams are always clean. And I even don't talk about Metro - there is 0 trash cans in whole system but nobody is littering. It might be cultural thing. We look at public transportation as "our" thing. You don't litter at home so you don't litter in public transportation as well.
@@chatnoir1224 I happen to agree with you, it's less consequences for doing something, even if you did the same consequences in the western world, it would just make them more inclined to make sure they don't get caught. The people there just don't feel inclined to damage and graffiti public property, which is good. Although you could argue they are the ones lucky enough to catch the trams or busses, the lower class there might not have such a luxury.
Cleaness and no advertisment pollution. Gives us that profound feeling of serenity and bliss.

Many years have passed and I'm still curious about this, as no one seems able to answer...
Why are the trolleybuses exempted from the daytime running lights rule???
The bright smile of the passengers replaces the daytime running lights.
I think, it's saving power. Just imagine, every trolleybus drawing around 150W (headlights, taillights, dashlights, etc.) extra from the lines. If there are 10 trolleybusses you get 1.5kw/h extra consumption. If the trams are taken into equation, you have a pretty big extra power consumption which has a toll on a supposedly fragile power grid.
I can't see other reasons, because the cars, trucks and other busses have them on and they don't rely on the power grid.
@@goldenstatefreeway9737 Then, diesel bus passengers must be very unhappy lol
@@ndc5544p That could be one explanation. But on the other hand, if you've watched other North Korean bus/tram/metro videos, you can see some trams even have multi-colored decoration lights at night...... Wouldn't power supply be more of a problem at night?
BTW, since the newer trolleybuses were introduced after the DRL rule (I remember seeing DRL in news reports as early as in 2012), it should be safe to say that North Koreans still haven't mastered the technology or secured part supply for LED automotive lighting...
Does anyone know the name of the song playing at the very beggining?

Still better than the public transport in most American cities. With so few automobiles, and the vast majority of people taking electrically run public transport, the air quality must be pretty good there.
yes, in Pyongyang are very good air! Feel very good after a visit there with fresh air...this in a capital! :-) The transportsystem is very good!
Air quality is actually pretty bad because of heavy industry, coal burning and pollution and fine dust coming over from neighbouring China. It's okay in summer but in winter it's pretty bad.
KT4Dani From What I’ve heard from data and tourists who took the NK tour, they say the air quality is actually quite bad. Comparable to China. Due to industry and little emissions regulations for the cars that do hit the road, it creates poor air quality. Other than public transportation, electrification and renewable energy is non existent here.
I doubt they have good air. North Korea is industrial county, am I right? But the same time it is very undeveloped country with absolutely inefficient government, so I guess industry (plus cars and etc) spoils there heavy.

What voltage do Pyongyang's trams and trolleybuses use?
5V it seems, considering their speed...
Probably 600V DC
600V!
No idea why this is in my recommended, aber schönes Video!
Vielen Dank!
When a country with sanctions still managed to have a city better than anything in south asia and Africa
Nice footage! How is the upgraded KT8D5 called?
Thongil
Can someone tell me what the old TV looking things are on some of the trams?
Which one? That cube in the front of the roof, near the right side? It's the route number lightbox, the same as the first used one in Tatra T7B5 designed by ČKD for Moscow.
What you mean exactly?
Esses ônibus andam sempre nessa velocidade ?
Amazing Video!
thanks :)
Great video! New transportation methods: Gasoline buses, taxis, new style trams, electric bikes and roller skates!
Thanks! Yes, Northkorea do a lot for good public transport!
Trolley looks better than the ones in Philly. LoL
musik is no good
Music is so old.
Lol
Probably much safer and low crime too!
alb12345672 That would be weird if they had crime. Their laws are ridiculously strict. Imo, I would have freedom rather than no crime.
Awesome!
thanks :-)
How did you manage to record all those clips? I thought tourists were only allowed to walk in certain areas of the city..
By the way... 6:45 What the...?!?! XD
I organisite my own travels there...so no problem to walk also in other ares. Scrat is my talisman and looks insode some videos :-D
An entire society without cellphones, in 2019. Fascinating
Look there...all have mobilephones!
They have their domestic phones, and Chinese imports all using a modified Android 4 OS.
KT4Dani Some can’t afford a smartphone in Pyongyang though. I would not say “all”
Token Black they even got a NK version of angry frogs
They have smartphones, but no real internet(at least to most people).
Fantastic city ! ! ! !
i know!
a beautiful movie, I hope that I will go there someday and I will copy this network to my city transport channel.
thanks! Its very nice there...i some weeks i go there for my next trip.
