    Yep. This happened. The DJI Air 2S landed in the Baltic Sea. This was no doubt the oddest situation I've ever experienced in my whole drone flying career. I've flown a ton of different drones, in much harsher and unforgiving conditions, so having the Air 2S go down baffled me. I've flown my Mavic 2 Pro here in winds that would rip your head off, and the Mini 2 in similar winds, even on the same day, but what happened here is a mystery. This should not have happened.
    Yes, we ignore wind warnings because we've flown through them hundreds of times in much higher winds, so these not so strong winds didn't pose much of a threat to us considering our other experiences.

    Rule of thumb when flying out to sea, Check first the 1. direction of the wind 2. wind speed. (Ground air speed varies greatly with gust on higher elevation) If its blowing out to sea you have 2 option either abort or fly with caution. Remember when your flying against the wind it will drain your battery more quickly than flying with the wind. I've noticed you left your battery low before initiating return to home with the wind against it. Your drone was fine except it didn't have enough power to make it back to you. This was pilot error of judgement that caused you guys to lose your drone. Expensive mistake but I'm sure you've learned from it.

      We always check UAV Forecast for wind, kp index and sats, that's the first thing we do before we fly. The wind here wasn't that bad, mind you my Mini 2 was having trouble closer to the waves at around 10m, as soon as I moved up to about 40m it started to move home. We've done this hundreds of times before and never had any problems, and we usually land with 20%, very rarely does it happen that we land with less than 10% as that stresses us out. The drone behaved very oddly here in my opinion, and from my experience if the drone had not capped our power we would have made it to the beach with no problem at all. Yes, expensive it was, but we were up in it the air two hours later in even stronger evening winds with the Mini 2, get up and move on I say.

      I agree.im a droner too.i did come across with this kind of situation.that drone would have make it back ashore if you started returning from that 1st strong wind warning. Or you could try flying low if the wind is against you cause mostly strong wind usually hits hard when your above.

      @PhillipSkraba  3 роки тому +5

      Yes, totally correct, that didn’t work here though as the winds lower to the ground were out of control, I had to raise my Mini 2 way up high to get over them 🔥 That is logical thought though, so always try that first.

    So upsetting :( BUT, you definitely should have flown straight back to land instead of back to home point (much shorter distance) then walked to find it on the beach. I've come across something like this before with high winds and learnt to NEVER trust that timer. With no wind it's quite accurate, but in high winds, it can't be trusted. Sorry to hear it mate.

    • @kizzmiazzz
      @kizzmiazzz 3 роки тому +14

      yep true, and on top i think the altitude chosen was also wrong. wind was blowing over the island towards the drone, so flying much much lower right above the sea would have gotten some lower winds due to the island itself blocking it.

      i do think there were some mistakes made here in regarding to flying downwind and then setting up for an upwind flight home, i also disagree that winds would have been worse near the surface. ALL THAT SAID, i’ve seen several videos including this where DJI logic massively slows the available motor power to “save battery” but the result is what happened to you, the lowered power doesn’t allow forward progress into the wind (or very little) and you end up not making it back. in many of these cases, including yours, it is clear had you been able to use full sports mode you would have likely made it back. i don’t understand why DJI does not allow you to override this logic to get yourself home, so weird and frankly it makes them partly complicit in the loss of the drone. Sorry this happened. I love your channel.

    When the wind signal showed critical ... it’s safer to take the drone to a lower attitude and head towards home point. I had a similar issue with the Mav Pro 2 at Durdle Door in UK and the critical wind signal warning appeared, I immediately lowered the attitude and got the drone back.Obviously the pro 2 is more stable due to its weight. But sadly in your situation I don’t understand why you assumed a different path would helped you regain more control.? After all its SEA . Anyways, truly sad you lost the drone and hopefully DJI would certainly compensate for the loss.

    Same thing happened with my Phantom 4 2.0. Winds changed direction mid flight, Santa Ana winds started blowing out away from land, and she wouldn’t move forward anymore. So I dropped the altitude down to 1-2 feet off the surface of the water and she managed to pick up speed flying below the wind shear. It made it back with 9% power, critical landing.

    Same exact thing happened to my Mavic Air 2 just yesterday. Except the wind was blowing in my favor for the return. I knew that I was going to burn through a lot of the power to get out to where I wanted to shoot however the battery started to drop off faster than expected and then the speed started to go negative. At that point I decided to abort and even with the wind at the drone's back it only made it to the edge of the beach where I was able to catch it before it auto landed with 1% power. One suggestion about flying drones in stong winds is that the wind is not the same speed at all altitudes. You might have tried climbing or descending to look for lower head winds / faster return speed. I initially climbed on the way out but was going pretty slow so I descended and found less head wind. On the way back I knew the faster wind was up high so that is where I flew back on the abort / return. RIP Mavic Air 2S.

    Sorry for your loss...
    I had a similar experience with my Air 2S : below 50% battery started dropping unexpectedly fast. I had to land really quick and got lucky to have no damage as I was in the mountains.
    I found my Mavic Pro to be much more reliable on this side.
    Ah and last thing, a good option for you in this case would have been to go down as fast as possible when you had the wind warning. It happened to me to be away from shore and I found the drone had way more speed when down, juste above water level, as the wind force is generally stronger as you go up.
    Hope DJI will work on an update for the AIR 2S..
    Cheers

  • @yt3dkraft

    Pilot error - this is, what typically happens to novices. When you ignore the "strong wind" warnings and fly out to the sea with tailwind at that height, it is no wonder, that you run out of battery at headwind. You can not believe the "remaining flight time" indicator during the tailwind phase and expect to have that time also in the headwind course. DJI makes you imagine to be safe with that "remaining flight time" indicator in these situations - too misleading in my opinion!
    Experienced pilots know this and in that situation they would know how to conteract: Lower height to get into a calmer area and fly directly towards land (not transversal back to home point as in your case).
    By the way: Who issued that "BVLOS paper", allowing your friend to fly BVLOS with such a drone and that minor level of experience???

I think sometimes the sport mode is not always the best way if you are fighting against wind at least in my experience Cinema mode is not that fast but give you control & less inclination wich could be good for aerodinámics and decrease the wind resístance. So sorry for your lost.

    Ugh...I'm having flashbacks to losing my first mini 2. Lost it somewhere in the mountains. Turned back with 49% battery. Not overly windy. It went from 49% to 20% super fast. Then I watched it hold at the same distance until the battery just died. It is such a helpless feeling. The locate feature didn't work. I'm guessing because of the dead battery. The hike was way to precarious for me to try without climbing gear. Couldn't get a replacement fast enough, but now the new one's up in the air. I wonder if switching out the propellars had anything to do with it... Great video once again, Phillip. :)

    Hi
    Sorry for you loss, I have been to Hell on the Moo, so your video brings back fantastic memories.
    When I fly I have some rules.
    1. Don't do anything with your drone you would not do if you were inside the drone as a pilot .
    2. When you get a wind warning drop your height, if you are still in sports mode remember the downwards sensors do not work!
    3. The sea will absorb electrical ENERGY FAST!!
    4. Never test a new drone in high winds over water! But I guess you know that now.
    5. Stop expecting DJI to be perfect.
    6. If you insist on flying over water. Waterproof the battery door with silicone, fly with floats, add a strobe light to the top of the drone, get some high visibility skins.
    My guess is you would not have taken these risks if you were actually inside pioloting the craft.
    These are my rules.
    Just so you are aware Ì have a pilots licence for helicopters and light aircraft, get DJI insurance.

    It is sad to lose a bird over water. I fly over water regularly in WA/AUS and have lost one DJI drone over water when in Sports mode and almost lost a DJI Air and DJI MA2 as well. In my experience, I have found that when in Sports mode, the pitch angle (Atti angle) is high which creates increased wind resistance and also significantly reduces power reserves, where the Battery Safety mode kicks in early to Auto Land. I have saved a MA and MA2 when facing this issue by changing back into Normal mode (which almost doubles the power reserve and reduces the pitch angle = less wind resistance) and then reducing height to fly in less wind. This would be considered a crazy move and goes against all flying instincts of maintaining height and returning ASAP. But it has saved my bacon several times. Keep up the great videos with spectacular cinematic scenery.

    Здравей, I am kite surfer and paraglider pilot and I have a lot of practical experience with winds :)
    For me the case is more than easy to understand why it happened and what must be a right way to do to save the drone.
    The wind was very strong and it is coming from your right side when you launch the drone and you start piloting it side wind and it manage to correct the drifting well enough ( in paragliding this is called "crabbing" ).
    The next that you did was a mistake - you let the drone to go downwind ( go with the wind in his direction) and after this you want it to take it back straight in the headwind and to do this the drone must overcome the speed of the wind and MORE to start moving relative to the ground (water in this case) and this was draining the power way way faster and that is why the battery dies like crazy.
    The correct way to save it in this case when you are way to downwind is to make the same crabbing and steer it sideways to the wind back to the island but more downwind and to land it in some safe spot and go by foot and collect it.
    I am sure in this way you will manage to land it safely because when see the headwind route and if I "unfold it " it will be enough to land on the island and the energy for this will be less smaller than your decision to fight the wind.
    You will be more careful for next time ;)
    PS and from the beginning if you returned it in the same way that you go inside the sea it was the right choice for the whole saga but you decide to make it "safer" and ... we are seeing the results ;)

    • @PhillipSkraba
      @PhillipSkraba  3 роки тому +1

      Thank You for your insights, no doubt very useful ones! The problem here arose quite quickly. We only saw we were in trouble at about 40-30%, this was very unusual and we've experienced some very nasty weather before this out at sea. Normally we'd get back with 20-10% battery, here the drone basically didn't let us do anything. Until about 40% we were flying normally as we would, just filming and taking photos (which we didn't recover), as we were 100% sure thanks to a lot of previous experience that we would get home with battery to spare.

    I was in a similar predicament around a year ago when I went on vacation to a beach. I flew my Mavic Mini out over the ocean on a windy day. It had been windy every day and it was our last day there so I wanted to get some footage, even though it was really windy. I flew it out, after a while the wind sped up and started to push it farther out to sea as I was trying to get it back. I had to cancel all of the automatic landing warnings as the battery was critically low, put it in sport mode, and try to land it on the edge of the bay I was on because I would have had to go straight into the wind to bring it back to me. I had to run (so I could get there first and make sure it was ok) nearly a mile to find it and realize I had landed on sharp, uneven rocks. I was able to get it off and it was unharmed. I guess I got pretty dang lucky. Sorry to hear your Air 2s wasn't so lucky.

    1. Doesn't Normal mode get you farther per battery than Sport mode? Even in wind?
    2. Why not gradually lower the drone to use less battery and fly in less wind? I saw the pilot trying to raise it when it was already too high and critical battery.
    3. Fly straight back to the nearest shoreline, not the home point. Then walk to retrieve it

    • @PhillipSkraba
      @PhillipSkraba  3 роки тому +1

      Well, that depends if it moves in the wind or not, we had to drop the hammer on Sports Mode as the drone wasn't having any of Normal mode. Well, the pilot was specially high due to the fact he was countering auto-landing, so we had to keep the drone higher as long as we could with the hope of reaching home. Sure, that seemed like a similar distance in this case, not much could have saved this drone I'm afraid.

    Hi Phil, I'm really sorry for your loss. Without analyzing the data it's difficult for anyone to make a sound judgement call on exactly what happened. DJI will be able to access all your embedded data streams which should include motor loads, stick inputs etc. So hopefully they will be able to conclude whether this was a software/hardware issue, wind gusts or simply pilot error. I'm not sure of your piloting skills but on the face of it I have to agree with an earlier comment. Knowing each drones capability to handle the wind is one thing, assessing the wind speed & direction prior to any UAV flight is another, and it's absolutely crucial! Particularly flying over water & especially at altitudes of 30m or more where wind speeds can increase considerably. I'm not sure if you're aware but there are free app's available (UAV Forecast & Drone Buddy) which will give you an estimated wind speed at all altitudes, this also includes direction & gust speeds. For me, If I have any doubt prior to a launch I will often use an anemometer too (as extra insurance) as this will give me the latest up to the minute reading.
    I know it's frowned upon but like you I will often ignore the "wind speed warning" notifications, but that said it does raise my awareness when I get them and so I will fly with extra caution, paying particular attention to any sudden gimbal movements and keeping a closer eye on my read outs/bearings. Because I've experienced a few "close calls" in the past maybe I tend to fly over cautiously, so watching your flight unfold I was a little surprised you didn't eer on the side of safety and abort the mission, reduce altitude & RTH immediately? The wide fluctuation in your RTH times bore all the haul marks of either a malfunction or gusty wind conditions, both of which are a "red flags" to me (the app uses the load on the motors verses remaining battery power to assess this) But of course it's easy for me to comment sat in the comfort of my home, I wasn't there at the time and we're all wiser after the event. If it's any consolation (and it isn't) you're not alone, plenty of us have suffered similar incidents so on a positive note lets hope that DJI come back with a software issue and replace your drone FOC for you. If not, you might sadly just have to put this one down to an expensive learning experience.

    Sorry for your loss. I don't seem to see the drone enter a RTH state at all or have I missed it? I only saw a Critical Low Battery message, did that force a RTH at all?

    • @PhillipSkraba
      @PhillipSkraba  3 роки тому

      We were cancelling the RTH constantly as it tried to land, which is odd that that didn't show on the screen.

    I did a test recently flying back in Sports Mode and flying back in Normal Mode. I found that when you have low battery, you should switch to Normal mode. Sports mode eats the battery extremely fast. Flying over land at the same distances running battery down to same percentages, I could not get back in Sports Mode. It did its fail safe landing... I got back in Normal mode with 7% battery remaining. I think your biggest problem was flying in strong winds. If you were flying forward stick in Sports Mode and making no headway... The winds had to be howling. Sorry for your loss. I suppose DJI will make this right for you.

    What a bummer Philip. Is there any kind of DJI Care Refresh support channels you can share this with? I had similar story with my Mavic 2 Pro; flew it in high winds and couldn't get it back to the home position even in Sports mode with the stick all the way forwards. The lower I got the faster it travelled horizontally, but it forced a landing about 600m away from me. Thankfully I was over land and just had to pop into a farmers field to collect it.

    Ouch, to boli. Kondolencje! Moj Mini 2 automatycznie wylądował mi na pustyni tutaj na początku jak kupiłem, na szczęście dzięki mapce moglem go znaleźć. Latać nad woda straszy mnie!

    So sorry for your loss! I lost my drone to water back 5 years ago. It is a sad feeling indeed!

    Same thing almost happened to me but luckily switching it back to normal made gave us a few extra minutes of battery to help it come back

    Thanks for your expensive video. I always fly into the wind going out over the ocean for this reason. I wonder if you took different angle to right and fly down the island with more wind behind you if that would give you better angle, then just a long walk down the beach to get it. I had one close call with my mini 2, and I almost lost it - but managed to drop lower and then continued.

      I'm sure there would be many factors that would have saved this drone, but I'm afraid we just weren't able to save it. It happens.

    Ive been thinking of buying an Air 2s so i have been doing some research on them.
    This vid appeared in my recommendations so I watched it. I thought the way it was presented was sad and a bit funny at the same time but the comments had me laughing my head off.
    Im still laughing.
    Sorry for your loss.

      The Air 2S is an excellent drone! It needs a few updates, but that's only normal for a new drones, don't worry about that. Yes, some of the commenters repeat themselves, then get all wound up, and then abusive, so some I just ban as they aren't playing nice. I try to keep the humour high though! Welcome to the channel in that case. The Air 2S is a great drone to pick up if you don't have a drone, you can be sure DJI will drop a few updates soon!

    Oh noooo sorry to hear about that. I hope you have the DJI care refresh. I don’t want guess too much but technically looks a radio communication issue with the crystal or an issue in the intelligent battery but better that DJI investigate

    I’ve had a similar experience with my DJI Mavic Pro a while ago flying over the open sea with strong winds when in less than a minute my drone was dragged over 1km away and the only way I could bring it back was finding the right direction to not fight too much against the wind. Good thing was my battery was 100%. As lighter the drone is more difficult will be for it win the wind battle so I don’t believe smaller drones should fly at all if there are strong winds. We sometimes just want things to go well 🤪 when it’s more likely to fail. Sorry for your loss mate. 🌊

      Yes, my Mavic 2 Pro battled serious winds on Iceland, and my Mini on the Seychelles, but I managed to get both back home. What happened here with this drone really shocked me, whilst filming it happening with my phone I was sure it was going to get back home, so I was very saddened it didn't

    You have my deepest sympathy - exact same thing happened to my Mavic Air 2 - started 56% battery out to sea and returned back at 40% and never made it. When it got to about 10% all control was lost and it just recorded the video until it ditched.
