DJI AIR 2s - ACTIVE TRACK 4.0 | trail running, hits 2 branches, Does it crash?

  • This is a random review of the DJI AIR 2s From a mountain runner and hiking enthusiasts' perspective. I Focus primarily on the active track 4.0. The active track 4.0, aside from the 20-megapixel camera with a 1inch sensor was what caught my attn. I love to run and hike in the mountains and non of the other drones could effectively follow me without losing me in the trees or the slightest obstacle would take it off course.

    Great video. Thanks for sharing. Glad you had prop strikes without damage. I did the same thing on my new M3 and two minor prop strikes followed by hitting those leafless tree branches and a full crash with $350 in damage and a loss of the drone for a month. I keep thinking about the difference between and i think the fact. You were i a sunny helped. Leafless grey branches on a hazy day prob didn’t help. Glad your experience was better. Wow 🤩
    At first I was like..nahh c’mon mate, be realistic with your expectations ..that trail with all those little branches is asking that drone to crash.
    BUT like you, seeing what it did on that last cluster fu** fallen tree is like…WHAAT? Seriously 😳🤩🤩🤩
    I can’t wait to get mine, it’s going to be my first Drone ( wanted one since the release of the DJI Phantom 2 🥴) but could never be satisfied with a lot of what they do for the money I had to pay.
    Now finally with the Air 2S I bit the bullet and decided to buy this little gem 💎 of aDrone, definitely worth waiting all these years to finally get exactly what I always wanted in a Drone.

I am impressed by the tracking capability, but not the obstacle avoidance, and will not trust avoidance in future. If you want the ultimate follower, get a Skydio 2 (or 3 when it comes out). It's sensors are superior and omnidirectional. The Air 2s isn't bad though, it's the ultimate jack of all trades, good at following and distance flying for great shots from above. The Skydio lacks in that department because of the low battery life. Can't go wrong with either of them in my opinion.

    From what I saw online, the new software/firmware is even better at tracking. What I see here is impressive as it is and, really, this whole thing is pushing it with these kinds of tiny branches. We often catch branches like that with our face because we always miss a few so expecting a smart drone to navigate them all is really unrealistic

      I agree with you, I was impressed with how well it did. The reason I did that was some of the places I go are right are in more technical terrain and I wanted to know what the limits were. I was primarily seeing how well it would track around switchbacks and trees etc.

      @@AndrewBrubaker I have the Air2s on order, hence why I try to watch and learn 😃
      I always wanted a Drone since the release of the Phantom 2 way back when but nothing was compact enough or had the features I wanted or needed.
      Once the Air 2 s came on the market it was in my opinion the best bang for the money and decided to finally get one. So judging from what I see in your video and others it sure seems to be a great drone alright 🤩
      Unfortunately with the upcoming release of the Mavic Mini 3 Pro I am unsure if I jumped the gun to soon?
      A Drone such as the Mini is perfect in size for me and it’s possible it will be close to what the Air2s can do with the active track and seems to have similar obstacle avoidance sensors ( or better??)
      Naturally the camera will be not as goid as on the Air 2s but still, i reckon it will be a great little Drone to own for any hobby user and perhaps a semi pro user 🤷‍♂️.
      Well, you can’t wait forever for a gadget to be what you want or you never buy anything 😂😂 so yes I am sure I will be happy with the Air2s regardless- with no regrets I imagine.
      It’s the active track and obstacle avoidance I really want and so this video of yours has given me peace of mind knowing I can safely use it for my own UA-cam videos when out and about prospecting for gold in the Western Australian Outback or whatever else I go.
      So again thanks heaps and btw, i had no idea about the hyper lapse mode the Air2s has, that is awesome 🤩m have you tried that function yet?

Well I am going to say yes great video. But please be careful in the future in the woods around bare thin branches. Also, beware of wires and very tall fences that are thin wired also. I find it interesting to see how well that thing does where you live. I tried the same sort of thing on a forest road along a mountain ridge here in the east. On the first test, I walked along the road. It clipped branches several times until one of them upset it enough to send it tumbling. On the next test, I tried to get it to follow my Jeep. It complained that my altitude was too low, but the only way to give it more altitude would have been to fly it above the canopy. I tried that in a few different places, and never got it to follow the Jeep within the forest. If it can't follow a Jeep on a dirt road, there's no way it could track me on a foot path.
    We definitely have a different variety of trees around here. Yours seem more columnar, and probably taller. The trees along those ridges are surprisingly short, and gnarly. It looks like my dreams of follow me videos are out the window, and I will have to have a driver or a pilot to get the kind of footage I want. I can't do much about my location. It would probably do better down at a lower elevation, where the trees tend to be dramatically taller, but that isn't where the Jeep trails are. Anyway, it would have to go a lot farther than it has to get me to trust the obstacle-avoidance. It never crashed hard, but it definitely crashed. In the course of running nine batteries through, I installed four sets of propellers before finally breaking off one of the arms.
    That one was my fault. Mr. Hotshot here went to sport mode to zoom around at 45 mph where there was only one thing to hit, and I hit it at 45 mph. Wish I had bought the insurance!

    • @AndrewBrubaker
      @AndrewBrubaker  2 роки тому

      I have had really good luck with it following me in my jeep. I am interested why its not working for you? I noticed different times if there isn't much contrast in color between the subject you want to track and the surrounding area it looses track of the subject easily. What color is your jeep?

    • @thedroningjeeper4750
      @thedroningjeeper4750 2 роки тому +1

      It's "sarge green," which is a similar color to yours. The issue isn't with detecting the Jeep as something it can track, the issue is altitude. When I try to set it up to follow the Jeep in the location where I want to track myself, it refuses to engage, and demands that I fly to a higher altitude. That is not an option in this location. My choices for altitude are something like 8' and 30', with nothing in between.
