What a great movie this is, and how well it holds up. Amazing. I know it's not a comic accurate Constantine but this has always been my Constantine. Keanu at his best in this movie he's awesome.
25:16 it's the necklace he took off the priest at the start of the film. It's kinda like a talisman. It's the reason why the priest got easily "possessed" in a way by the demon and drowned himself with drinks. The priest is very much a psychic which I think is what made him very "stressed all the time" as you put it
I was legit hoping you'd notice some of the cool moments of the movie, but you went past them without the reaction I hoped haha When the dude at the start, the one that gets possessed, moves around... he is always looking around as if someone was behind him. So, when Constantine gets in the chair, we see that every time he did that at the start, he was sensing Constantine looking at him !!! It's an unnecessary yet such a cool addition to how fantastical the world is.
Same with Isabel before she jumps off the roof. She looks back at Constantine running through hell, looking for her. She even calls his name in the security footage. Cool how that ties in together. Like he went to hell to see the past. I assume her psychic abilities helped in seeing the past instead of just finding her soul in hell.
Oh wow! That's a really cool detail. This movie throws so much at you that it was hard to keep up at times lol. Like Fifth Element, it definitely deserves multiple viewings
FYI - you nailed it that Hell was like a nuclear explosion - the creators actual watched the old films of the 1950’s a-bomb tests and tried to make that moment when the initial heat wave blasted Nuke Town the eternal condition of hell. Pretty creepy/amazing effect
I was introduced to this movie and it's tie-in game, before i was even in school, by my big sister and to this day it's my favourite visual representation of hell.
I like to think that partly because of Papa Midnight's prayers and partly because of his faith and heroism, Chaz ascends from human to half Angel at the end.
I went to see this film at the cinema with my son and we were both just blown away with how great it was. The cinematography, action, storyline and just because there was a leading lady they didn't hook up. And the casting and acting OMG just off the charts brilliant.
Keanu is perfect for this role. I couldn’t get enough of this movie and always wanted more, so it’s pretty much what got me into other stuff like Supernatural. I think it’s in the same realm of films like Dredd and The Crow where the actors pull off the role perfectly and it felt like it was made at exactly the right time.
It's a great choice. Constantine is a fantastic movie. I actually got to attend the red carpet world premiere (won tickets on local radio). Keanu sat 3 rows behind me and I saw Shia in the bathroom.
Oh, yea. While I will always think Matt Ryan is the BEST portrayal of Constantine on film, this is still a great movie, and Keanu Reeves is Keanu Reeves. He makes everything he's in good.

Constantine is such an awesome movie, and it still really holds up today. Peter Stormare's Lucifer is the best performance. For only a few minutes of screen time, you never forget it. When Keanu Reeves was asked about all of his characters and if there was one he'd like to play again, his answer was "Constantine."
That shot of Gabriel coming into this plane of existence by slamming down with their foot on John's throat... It's an overused word these days, but my God, what an iconic shot.

And that's what I wanted your attention on. This movie was one of my stepfather's favorites, who raised me and I miss it so much. We watched this movie NUMEROUS TIMES, and we still always had a good time. But today I had a surprise, I didn't know about the existence of this post-credit scene... And I don't think my father knew either... At first I was very sad, because he left without knowing that his favorite movie had a secret ... But now I feel that through me, and also through you, he saw firsthand something new from his favorite movie. I just wanted to leave here for you my gratitude for this moment.
So fun fact, multiple writers of Constantine's comic book, Hellblazer, have claimed to have met him in real life. There is a little bit about it on John Constantine's wikipedia page. Also, Hellblazer is an incredible comic and very very much worth the read!
BTW, Keanu Reeves has stated multiple times that he'd LOVE to do a sequel to this! Its also funny you said Nicolas Cage would be great as Constantine, because for a time they were considering Reeves to be the new iteration of Ghost Rider in the MCU!
In the extended cut John was actually sleeping with a halfbreed demon. The girl in the front when he set off the sprinkler system who said “Holy water?” She was actually teasing him about what would happen when he gets to hell.
She's considered a succubus. Even has a tail.... I just saw in a video recently that said the reason why the director cut her out was to enhance the feeling of his loneliness....
John in the comics is a blond Liverpudlian who lives in London, looks a little like Sting from "The Police" Keanu was PERFECTLY cast. All jokes aside, he did a great job with what he was given.
Truly a modern classic. I would love to know what horrible thing went terribly wrong in the marketing or the release of this movie that relegated it to the discount DVD bin in most gas stations... because it is just a truly incredible film on so many levels!
It was the same year as Batman Begins, the first movie of the transporter series, saw 2, hostel, the 4th harry potter movie, get rich or die tryin' and so on. 2005 was a veeeery loaded year for very good movies. I'm pretty sure that's why it went under everyone's radar. The Horror genre had their peak movies, the comic book fans had batman begins, the action lovers had not only Transporter but also many many many of today's classics. If you check movies from 2005 you'll instantly see why this movie went completely forgotten until today's time. + Endless amounts of people watched this movie on pirated websites. Nowadays especially in europe you hardly find any pirate websites to watch movies because of an annoying law. Once constantine had been shown on TV or anywhere else it got recognized instantly. Also Keanu's huge roles with John Wick must've brought people to his older movies.
This movie was great! The casting, the cinematography, all of it. I love what they did to Gabriel(Tilda) Angels are genderless if I'm not mistaken and Tilda is the perfect fit for it. Her looks are on point.
Great reaction guys. Constatine is a fantastic "dark" movie. It came out during a decade of similarly occult toned movies (Devil's Advocate, End of Days, 9th Gate, etc.) and the start of quality comic book-based films. That perfect conflux gave us Constatine. It isn't fully faithful to the source material, but what we got was amazing. Glad you watch it.
It feels like it's been ages since there has been a movie release that has just been straight up cool like a lot of things from this era. Just straight up fun, for adults but with some of that magic "I'm watching a movie and I love it" feeling from childhood too (just more jaded). Also, I worked at a cinema when this came out and we gave out free temporary tattoos like Constantine's forearm tattoos with every ticket. It was such a blast and seeing how much fun people had with it was awesome.
I've watched a handful of your videos now and is enjoyable as they are, I keep wondering how you guys haven't seen so many of these amazing classics already. You guys can't be that old I'm assuming.
The film is a BIG departure from the comics but is still very solid and fun to watch. John Constantine in the comics uses much more magic, less "parafernalia weaponry" even though it does have artifacts and weapons and such. In the comics Constantine is pretty sure to live a long life because he has sold his soul to THREE different demon lords so until they decide who deserves it more he's pretty much safe-ish
In the comic Constantine beats the cancer by convincing the first (Lucifer), the second and the third of the fallen (high level demons of equal strength, opposed to each other) to cure him, because if one of them would get his soul (and it's power) the ensueing infight would weaken all three of them so much that god would win.
This movie drops so many clues to Chaz's secret ANGELIC nature, like... John treats Chaz like crap because he knows what he is. (With the same distane he treats Gabriel.) Chaz can see the demon in the mirror that drops on his taxi without being effected by it. (He sees it as the mirror first flies out of the window face down then it flips over.) Chaz can't get into the neutral club because he's not neutral. Chaz knows tons of demonic lore. Chaz made the Holy shotgun shells. Chaz blesses the water. (Only Holy people can bless something.) Chaz blesses the woman with a prayer and is then killed. And according to biblical lore humans can go to Heaven but they CAN'T become Angels. So Chaz appearing as an angel literally means he was one the whole time. Now, if you rewatch the movie, knowing this about Chaz ahead of time, you'll see it all more clearly.
Wow! What an incredible take. This changes my whole perspective. I've watched this movie so many times and I never really thought of Chaz as more than just a sidekick.
@@EffWriteOff. Balthazar is a half-breed. Yes, demonic-ish, but still has some humanity in him which makes him neutral. Which means, he could be redeemed if he wanted to. Perhaps he was once a human who became corrupt. A full fledged demon would be that bug/snake/crab thing that attacked Constantine on the street, or that soldier demon in the mirror. They couldn't enter the club because they are pure evil with no chance for redemption.
The camera angles and shots like how you would view a scene with the mood is amazing. The DVD Special features are a blast, especially about the props, the lighter, gun and brass knuckles, etc.
Since a ton of other posters have already mentioned the awesomeness of Peter Stormare, I'll refrain from waxing poetic about him in this film and instead bemoan the fact that Gavin Rossdale didn't pursue a side-career in acting after this movie, as he was amazing in it. Seriously, he totally pulled off the sinister and suave villain. Given how big of a role his music played in my teen years it was a bit weird to see him in this movie, but damn me if he didn't kill his part in it!
Things I never noticed till you guys watched this years after I had seen this: The constant crosses. But I also just noticed the crosses on the water jugs in Constantine's apartment. I had always focused more on the water jugs jiggling cos the demons were coming for Angela. But now I noticed the crosses scratched into them. That explains why he has so much water so hell always have a supply of holy water. Also it's kinda apt that Angela is named Angela and it's set in Los Angeles. I ha noticed the pregnant virgin imagery with the way Mamon came through in Angela's stomach and how she felt something in her belly when she got pulled away through the elevators and buildings. But then I noticed that John, Beeman and the priest who are all psychic were never targets of Mamon. But all the women were the psychics that were targeted. The little Chinese girl at the beginning, Isabel and Angela were all female and that the whole prophecy about how the blood of God is needed to birth the son of the devil. The whole birth imagery wis so subtle there.
I am new to your channel but I love love love that you guys made this. Constantine i one of my fav movie of all times too... love Keanu, and watched it many times over in repeat. My favourite thing about this reaction video is reminding me of how I felt when I watched it the first time, when it's fresh and unknown. But of course with the amount of detail that goes into it, it's always worth a 2nd, 3rd, etc rewatch.
There's a popular theory that John wasn't the one who paid final insult to the Devil on his ascension, because his slit wrists mean severed tendons that impair his dexterity. So goes the theory, God borrowed the nearest set of hands for a bit of sign language.
This movie is like 90% rule of cool. One of my favorite bits about this movie is that no one eats in it- even in the scene where they’re “eating” they just shuffle the food around the plate, or pick it up and put it down. It’s some classic acting choices to deal with multiple takes and the fact that the food was probably cold for most of them.
So people are discovering this movie now!!! I have watched it so many times that I have lost count. I watch it at least 1 times a year. Like I watch LOTR.
This is definitely an interesting movie. I will say that the Constantine of the comics is so much deeper and more interesting of a character. The action is the most out of place aspect when you compare this to the comics. Constantine is a shady, morally ambiguous character, and the work as a whole doesn't neatly fit into a hollywood blockbluster formula. Not trying to take away from the movie at all. Keanu Reeves is always delightful, and the movie has a lot of positives going for it. The ending where Constantine deals with the devil is perhaps the most true to the original set of stories that you get. He's always trying to get more powerful entities to do his dirty work for him. Keep up the good work, guys. I'm loving the reactions!
Balthazar is played by rock star Gavin Rossdale (lead singer of Bush) and former husband of Gwen Stefani. Also, when I worked at 20th Century Fox, I ran into Peter Stomare (Lucifer) on the lot when he was headed to a costume fitting in the building where I worked. He showed up for the fitting in short-shorts and a My Little Pony tshirt and backpack. Just a wonderful weirdo, I'm a fan. He's done several movies with Keanu.
I always felt this movie had the same campy vibe as the first Mummy movie. They each went hard on their modern portrayal of their genre (noir and adventure pulp stories), and they both ended up having Rachel Weisz, lol. There's just something so charming about the combination of a wild premise and setting, with the show taking itself seriously. Other greats that do that are like Ghostbusters, or Indiana Jones, etc. I know this movie didn't follow the comics perfectly, but it was a great version nonetheless and I hope the sequel does go forward as it really is a fun version of the universe they've set up.
This movie is one of my absolute all time favorites 🖤 Constantine is an amazing character and Tilda Swinton elevates tuis movie to a whole other level 🪽 Im so excited for the sequel
I'm sure you have seen these but I'll throw in the suggestions of Sin City, Boondock Saints, Lucky Number Slevin, and Lock Stock and 2 smoking barrels! Love you guys!
Easily one of my favorite depictions of Lucifer; hot damn, does Peter Stormare crush that role. Sure, Constantine gets a ton wrong with the title character, but the world and people in it are so lush and interesting that it isn't hard to overlook where the movie fumbles.
Yeah, we aren't familiar with the comics at all, but from a standalone movie point of view, we enjoyed it very much! I'd love to know the differences between them, though
Actually Keanu played Constantine on point. Sure, he isn't blonde or british, but IMO that isn't what defines the character. Keanu nails the personality.
Check out the Hellblazer line of comics, they'll get you acquainted with him quick, fast, and in a hurry, and there are some fantastic stories in there. Keep up the good work, guys.
@@The_RedVIII I'm sorry but he doesn't. The comic John is a selfish ass who deliberately get his friends killed. He regularly freaks out when faced with demons. Keanu's John is a retired action hero cop. He's much too empathetic towards others with too much swagger and confidence.
a movie that definitely had to have a sequel! but, as it happened with other quality movies,... by the way, when I watched the black widow and saw Rachel Wise there, the first thing I thought was: "- she hasn't aged a second since Constantine so far". apparently she has mastered the time-stopping trick!!!
The reason this film is so stylized is because the director Francis Lawrence started out as a music video director like David Fincher who directed "Fight Club" and "Seven" .

I was so surprised how easy it was to rewatch it like 5 times. And so hard to make me rewatch a movie especially if it's good I'm too good at remembering details. But this one oh... It's such a good movie.
This is one of my favorite rewatch movies. I first saw it shortly after it was released on DVD and I've lost count of how many times I've rewatched it since. I strongly recommend a rewatch - there are many subtle threads that that you'll catch more of over the course of a couple of watches.
There's a bit of lore around the bathtub scene. Apparently the Director wasn't happy with a couple of takes so when Rachel went under again, without telling her, he got Keanu to hold her under! Hence the freakout reaction. Keanu said he always felt like shit after that scene. Also, this is the 2nd film Keanu and Rachel have starred together in. Chain Reaction is quite good too. It's more of a chase/thriller movie.
I love the fact that this movie is finally getting some recognition. I think it holds up remarkably well.

The priest is very much a psychic which I think is what made him very "stressed all the time" as you put it
I was legit hoping you'd notice some of the cool moments of the movie, but you went past them without the reaction I hoped haha
When the dude at the start, the one that gets possessed, moves around... he is always looking around as if someone was behind him.
@@NiceDudeMovieNight glad you guys enjoyed it!!
HOLY SHIT I DIDNT REALISE THAT WTF
Why you gotta blow my mind like that 😂
FYI - you nailed it that Hell was like a nuclear explosion - the creators actual watched the old films of the 1950’s a-bomb tests and tried to make that moment when the initial heat wave blasted Nuke Town the eternal condition of hell.
Yes! I love the Crow too.
We have the Crow on our list to react. Both of us haven't seen it!
@@NiceDudeMovieNight I think you’ll both definitely enjoy it, Brandon Lee is fantastic. I’ll be looking out for the upload!! Thanks for all you do!
@@NiceDudeMovieNight The Crow is awesome!
@@NiceDudeMovieNight Awesome. Can't wait for the reaction.
I watched this movie hundreds of times and it's one of my favourites ever but I never knew there was a post credits scene.
It's a great choice. Constantine is a fantastic movie. I actually got to attend the red carpet world premiere (won tickets on local radio). Keanu sat 3 rows behind me and I saw Shia in the bathroom.
It’s really funny that Keanu was behind you for his own movie.
While I personally prefer the way Constantine is portrayed in Hellblazer comics, still found this enjoyable as a standalone movie.
Well actually it won't be standalone anymore cause is getting a sequel
I don't mind at all.
@@joonasmukala8208 I don't mind it but i am not thrilled.
Oh, yea. While I will always think Matt Ryan is the BEST portrayal of Constantine on film, this is still a great movie, and Keanu Reeves is Keanu Reeves. He makes everything he's in good.
@@ragabashmoon1551Matt is the perfect Britist's Constantine up till now. Keanu is the perfect American's Constantine
always a pleasure watching your reactions, and if you want more Keanu , there is "Johnny Mnemonic", or if you want more Angel's there's "Dogma"
I give a big old second to this!! Johnny Mnemonic and Dogma are in my top 10 fave movies of all time
Na we need "Replicas"
@@KingSaintClair Well, the reason for Dogma, is it have the same director as clerks, one of they favorit movies and Mnemonic is just for fun, if they havent seen it
+1 for Dogma!
Dogma was such a bizzare experience
Constantine is such an awesome movie, and it still really holds up today.
Peter Stormare's Lucifer is the best performance. For only a few minutes of screen time, you never forget it.
When Keanu Reeves was asked about all of his characters and if there was one he'd like to play again, his answer was "Constantine."
That shot of Gabriel coming into this plane of existence by slamming down with their foot on John's throat... It's an overused word these days, but my God, what an iconic shot.
It’s a quiet moment, but I like the breath he takes while his face is still in the water; the way he feels his lungs are clear
"That skinny fella and his fat friend." is in reference to a detective series in the 90s called Jake and the Fat Man.
I might be showing my age, but I always thought it was a reference to Laurel and Hardy.. 😊
Could also be Asterix and Obelix, though I suppose "short fellow with his fat friend" would be more accurate
All of the critics and my friends hated this movie when it came out ; I absolutely loved it back then and even more now , and compared to the movies that come out now this is citizen Kane lol
I am so glad that you both are doing this film! I really hope you do Speed Racer soon!
ALSO... COLUMBO...COLUMBO!!!!
This movies depiction of hell is extremely unsettling for me. Just a mass of people endlessly climbing over one another, desperate for escape.
I would love to see Nic Cage and Keanu in a buddy cop type movie or a movie fighting against each other. Would make zillions
Cage and Keanu would bounce off eachother like ping pong.
Fuck yeah
Nick Cage would be great as, like, a Jason Blood type character. Someone fighting their inner demons and has that eternal wisdom behind them.
@@cameronritchie4073 and etrigan. that would be a fantastic plotline for the next constantine movie.
Oh godness no. we already had Jujitsu and that thing is a beast of its own.. no need to drag keanus career down with nick too..
PLEASE READ MY COMMENT.
Hello Chris and Altaf! My name is Lucas and I'm from Brazil.
I recently discovered your channel and I just LOVED it! I watched some of your videos and came to this one.
One of Tilda Swinton's best roles. Top tier character portrayal. Iconic.
So fun fact, multiple writers of Constantine's comic book, Hellblazer, have claimed to have met him in real life. There is a little bit about it on John Constantine's wikipedia page.
Also, Hellblazer is an incredible comic and very very much worth the read!
"Him" who? Constantine?
@@WolfFireheart Yes, they claim to have met John Constantine. Should have clarified lol
Yeah michelle monaghan played that role.
@@samellowery Yes! I thought what a super small role for this actress! AND I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE EXTENDED CUT!!
Sadly that part didn’t made it to the final cut
She's considered a succubus. Even has a tail....
I just saw in a video recently that said the reason why the director cut her out was to enhance the feeling of his loneliness....
John in the comics is a blond Liverpudlian who lives in London, looks a little like Sting from "The Police"
Keanu was PERFECTLY cast.
Yes, Chaz Kramer was, in fact, a halfbreed. Remember John called them "influence peddlers"?
I laughed way harder than anybody should have at the beeman joke
We're honored!
I watch this movie at least once a month. I sometimes play it for background noise when I’m going to sleep. Keanu=🖤
The fact that Keanu wants to do a sequel to this absolute banger of a movie and it wasn’t made immediately is a crime!
In the comic Constantine beats the cancer by convincing the first (Lucifer), the second and the third of the fallen (high level demons of equal strength, opposed to each other)
to cure him, because if one of them would get his soul (and it's power) the ensueing infight would weaken all three of them so much that god would win.
Love you, Nice dude's family. I'm glad these are popping up on my feed again ❤🎉
This movie drops so many clues to Chaz's secret ANGELIC nature, like...
John treats Chaz like crap because he knows what he is. (With the same distane he treats Gabriel.)
Chaz can see the demon in the mirror that drops on his taxi without being effected by it. (He sees it as the mirror first flies out of the window face down then it flips over.)
Chaz can't get into the neutral club because he's not neutral.
Chaz knows tons of demonic lore.
Chaz made the Holy shotgun shells.
Chaz blesses the water. (Only Holy people can bless something.)
Chaz blesses the woman with a prayer and is then killed.
And according to biblical lore humans can go to Heaven but they CAN'T become Angels. So Chaz appearing as an angel literally means he was one the whole time.
Now, if you rewatch the movie, knowing this about Chaz ahead of time, you'll see it all more clearly.
i'm mad at myself for not noticing the mirror thing, it show that have have some magical shenaningans at the very least... fml
same for the water.
Wow! What an incredible take. This changes my whole perspective. I've watched this movie so many times and I never really thought of Chaz as more than just a sidekick.
@@paulcrandall2534 The writers embedded so many clues as to Chaz's true nature. It really requires a second viewing.
Balthazaar isn't a neutral but still gains entry to the club though.
Things I never noticed till you guys watched this years after I had seen this:
The constant crosses.
John Constantine
John Wick
Johnny Silverhand
Johnny Mnemonic
Johnny Utah
Jonathan Harker
I sense a pattern
...
Thomas Anderson - CCCCCOmbo Breaker!!!
Fun fact: It was God flipping off Lucifer, not Constantine
There's a popular theory that John wasn't the one who paid final insult to the Devil on his ascension, because his slit wrists mean severed tendons that impair his dexterity. So goes the theory, God borrowed the nearest set of hands for a bit of sign language.
This movie is like 90% rule of cool. One of my favorite bits about this movie is that no one eats in it- even in the scene where they’re “eating” they just shuffle the food around the plate, or pick it up and put it down. It’s some classic acting choices to deal with multiple takes and the fact that the food was probably cold for most of them.
Watching people eat is comforting. They didn't want to induce that
So people are discovering this movie now!!! I have watched it so many times that I have lost count. I watch it at least 1 times a year. Like I watch LOTR.
Keep in mind that this is VERY much a unique take on the entire Constantine mythos, and is supposed to be set in the DC universe
the only good DC EU movie
@@ironboy3245 I dont think its actually official DCEU, but....... yeah.
@@MessyGamer616 it's not? Oh so the DCEU has no good movies...
Thx guys for reacting on this Movie. One of my favorites!
Well, hence why he showed up in JW2.
The closest you'll get to seeing Nicolas Cage as Constantine is the movie Drive Angry
I can't tell you how many times and watch this movie but thank you for posting it it's really awesome to watch UA-cam make commentaries
Knowing nothing about this is definitely the best way to go into this movie, because the opposite is most likely going to lead to disappointment
Yeah it's definitely a wild ride if you go in blank
LOVE his performance in this.
Holy shit, I`ve watched it like 3 times and never knew there was a post credit scene O.o
A better movie than it's rumor suggests. I hope the sequel will happen.
Keanu fight for that
Yessss we'd happily check out a sequel
It's happening.
Hard to see that folks realize that there is a movie like constantine! Guys this is one of the best DC movies ever and also one of the best of Keanu!
"We're just finger puppets to them" is a beautiful metaphoric line.
Watching y'all watch some of my fav movies has been a great way to relive them. Thanks for the nostalgia, and the new memories!
a movie that definitely had to have a sequel! but, as it happened with other quality movies,... by the way, when I watched the black widow and saw Rachel Wise there, the first thing I thought was: "- she hasn't aged a second since Constantine so far". apparently she has mastered the time-stopping trick!!!
This movie was an underrated gem. I hope we get another one with Keanu someday.
The reason this film is so stylized is because the director Francis Lawrence started out as a music video director like David Fincher who directed "Fight Club" and "Seven" .
I love this movie! Keanu and Tilda Swinton are amazing!
Nice reaction/commentary on the film, Guys. This was a pretty awesome movie. Looking forward to Constantine 2 with Keanu back as John!

And Keanu confirmed that he has been approached for a sequel, which he is very interested in doing.
All these years, and I never knew that there was a post-credits scene! And the actor you're looking for that played the Devil was Peter Stormare.
This is my first time watching your channel and you guys are great. I'll definitely check out some of your other reactions.

One of the best movie ever !!! Watched it more than 6 times.. still amazed me everytime
Love this movie. Can't wait to see Keanu and Stormare again in the new movie.
