  • Hey I wanted to try and get a simple and solid JCM 800 tone from the Marshall DSL20H. I've been on a Jeff Waters Annihilator binge for months now so I guess I get a chance to play some of my favorite riffs from those first few albums. Such an amazing guitar player/song writer.

    I've forwarded this on to Jeff Waters. Let's see if he watches it and comments. Like others have said, he's a humble guy and I'm sure he'll appreciate LambChoppers sterling efforts.

    Jeff Waters is such an underrated beast. Always flies under-the-radar, yet kicks serious ass. Love Annihilator, even the strange years in the 2000’s.

    A few years back I found a post from Jeff with his exact rig and settings for Alice in Hell. I don’t have the link to it because I took a screenshot but the setup was as follows (certainly check it out if you can find it though)…
    Original Late 70s Boss OD1 (He says both knobs at 7 o’clock but this would mean that the pedal is doing nothing so I think he meant ~7. These pedals only had a level and overdrive. There was no tone knob. Compared to SD1 this pedal cuts slightly more bass and has a brighter and more open sound. In general it is also less compressed and has less of a fizzy top end when cranked)
    50 Watt JCM 800 (exact model not specified but because it is 50 watts we can assume it’s an original 2204)
    Bass: 6
    Mids: 4
    Treble: 5
    Presence: 5
    Gain: 6
    Two SM57s. Both are straight on cab 3.5cm left of center cone on bottom left speaker. In the picture he posted from the recording the mics seemed to be taped together with the top slanted up very slightly and the bottom slanted up at a 45.
    He also notes that the cab was a stock marshall jcm 80 lead series
    Also if you are trying to get this tone with a jcm 800 studio or dsl 20, it would be best to use a eq pedal to slightly bump up the bass and low mids since these amps have less low end thump and headroom in general.

    Love the DSL vids 🤘🤘

    • @metalinsights9664
      @metalinsights9664 12 днів тому +1

      It's a difficult amp to get thick, round lead tones out of, and the bass can get very woofy super fast, but it's also a super fun amp to explore and try to get the most out of it. If you know how to dial in a DSL20H, you have pretty much arrived in terms of dialing in amps. I love these videos where Anthony tries to squeeze the maximum possible out of the DSL20H without any help from EQ pedals and other helper devices.

    • @seekndestroygaming
      @seekndestroygaming 12 днів тому

      @@metalinsights9664 yeah it's not designed for nice creamy leads but it takes pedals really well so you could get a pedal for that. I bought mine because it's a thrash metal machine.

    • @metalinsights9664
      @metalinsights9664 11 днів тому +1

      @@seekndestroygaming I agree. Due to its buzzy top end, the DSL20HR excels at modern metal stuff. Johan Segeborn has had some success dialing in Plexi-like tones with the settings shown in this video, but you sort of have to push the DSL20HR to its limits EQ- and volume-wise to get into that territory. As far as modern metal goes, however, the DSL is an excellent amp. As you mentioned, it's not well suited for creamy leads, but I think it excels on riffy stuff.

    SUPER-overlooked band! I remember my roommate in the Air Force buying the Alice in Hell album & it was just so unique & unlike anything else out there at the time. AMAZING guitar playing! You captured it well.
    Question: are you familiar with the band Warbringer? If not, I think you would really like them. Modern day thrash, but not just aping the 80s... check out the songs "Combat Shock", "Living Weapon", "Firepower Kills", "The Black Hand Reaches Out" & "Remain Violent". Love em!

    I've been messing with my dsl20 head lately. Trying to dail it in. I finally hooked it up to my Mesa 2x12 horizontal cabinet. Put a mxr 10 band EQ pedal in the FX loop. I just keep the knobs on the amp at noon except the volume around 9 o'clock. The mxr stays at netrual except I scoop the mids a little bit and turn the gain up halfway. Finally having fun with the amp. Had been using the Marshall mx2x12 vertical cab but it just isn't very good. A good cab is very important I'm learning. Even had been using a Harley Benton 2x12 horizontal with v30s but it isn't close to the Mesa cab.

    • @ale0800
      @ale0800 12 днів тому +1

      Everything you said is very interesting because we often worry too much about amps and pedals and forget about the importance of speakers.
      The V30s are great, but I confess that for me they look better on rectfier or 6505 style amps. For Marshall, if you have the opportunity, try the 1960! You will be surprised!

    • @J_Braz_
      @J_Braz_ 12 днів тому

      @@ale0800 the mesa cab I was talking about is for my 03 single rectifier. I just tried it the other day on the dsl20 and it was like a whole new amp. I do like the Harley cab better than the Marshall mx cab. I wanna try one of the EVH 2x12 60 watt cabs on it. I wish I hadn't even bought the Marshall cab. It's not very good imo. Not even real wood. Particle board!
