Thank you for including the cut to the room mic Ola, that actually helped me understand something. I couldn't figure out why my tone just seemed to be missing something compared to what you were getting, for example from the Pathos and Revv G3 pedals. Marshall takes 2 years and millions of dollars in advertising to get someone to buy one DSL1. Ola takes 1 minute, and helps to sell millions! Priceless! I want one!
Yup...Marshall should send him some free shit for this video. I DEFINITELY want to buy one now as the tone it makes to me is absolutely the ideal metal tone for my tastes. Super rich sounding with a crushing meaty chug that has the sponginess of a good tube amp going into power-tube compression and the deep ballsy depth and roar of a much larger amp. I wish we could have heard a bit more of the clean sound, but I'm sure it's quite nice as well.
@@wigon The cleans are surprisingly super clean. So much so that I don't need a fender amp. I have the DSL40, and it has lots of clean headroom on that channel. The DSL1 sounds much more brighter over the DSL40 but an EQ in the loop will fix that. I have an old Lead12 double-stack that I would love to put the 1 watt head on.
@@LarryMar Yup same here. I also have one of those awesome old Lead 12 mini-stacks. Those are great amps for recording classic metal sounds, but not so great for modern metal. This one sounds much better voiced for modern metal. I agree that it would probably sound KILLER through those 10" cabinets from the mini-stack.
Don't understand the hate for the DSL series from Marshall snobs, they're super good sounding amps, and this one really doesn't sound as small as I'd expect from a 1w amp
I find it funny that this is one of the best tones Ola has recorded over the many years he's been demoing amps. He usually always makes so many amps sound so similar, but this sound stood out in a good way.
I have this amp. For some reason it's a little hotter than the average Marshall....and a little brighter too. It has all the growl of a big Marshall but with just a bit more in the right places. I think it's just an engineering fluke that slipped past their sound engineers......but a really good one.
Agreed in full. Right around the 7 minute mark when you pulled the bass back just a smidge, and had the Tube screamer upfront, god damn perfection. Mids pushed, crunchy, sounds really great. Bravo sir.
Try the 50th anniversary Marshall 1Watt amps if you can find one - they are absolutely killer.... I have the 60s model JTM1 head which is so amazingly good at cleans, warmth and crunch; and I have the 00s model JVM1 head, which really is nothing short of stellar in truly any gain setting... That said: the DSL in this test does indeed sound great.
I absolutely love this amp. I got it for my birthday at the end of September and have it in my bedroom with a Seismic Audio 1x12 Luke cab and got a brand new 1x12 16ohm Celestion Greenback speaker to go with it. I can get any Metal tone from this that I want and it’s perfect volume for at home. The reverb sounds good and you can also get nice clean sounds. I play it with an Epiphone Les Paul Custom with passive pickups and a Harley Benton Explorer with Wilkinson passive pickups and they both sound killer.
Awesome! I think I’m going to get this amp as well. Have an ltd viper with EMG’s as well as Harley Benton EX-84 with cheap active’s. Do you use any pedals?
Just bought this little guy 1 week ago, sounded fucking great the first time plugged in! I'm running it through a 1x12" PRS cabinet with G12T-75 (I know this speaker has been discussed quite controversial, but I've always been a fan of mid-scooped heavy distortion). First I had the Orange Ppc112 with a vintage 30, but I couldn't get along with this harsh sound. I only play at home, mostly in the 0.1Watt mode, this takes just a little bit of punch out of the sound, but for practising this really does the job. I got a few little helpers which REALLY increase the sound properly for playing at bedroom volume through a 12" TC Sentry Noise gate after guitar Ibanez Ts808dx Tubescreamer with Iintegrated booster (seperatly switches) And 10 band EQ through the fx loop Les Paul 2 Humbuckers All in all not quite s cheap as if you just would buy the Dsl1, but the 0.1watt makes a proper bedroom rocking machine and in combination with a few little helpers (which give you a lot more control for your sound) you'll have a true heavy metal machine giving you an authentic and also individual sound you'd never expect from this cutie. Choose your cabinet wisely...a 8" (like the combo) will give you more saturation out of the tubes, because you can turn up the volume more as you could with the 12". But an 8" pushes less air and will always sound "boxy" benefit: fits in the living room everywhere and the amp can be cranked even more. The 12" pushes more air which makes the Chugg very tight (EQ in fx loop!) A vintage 30 12" may sound good at the amp cranked full, but for playing at home it may not be doing the trick. I live in a apartment house, so I can't play that loud (0.1watt volume max on half) but it sounds actually really really good, cause the 12" pushes nicely (10 band EQ) I highly recommend this lilttle Metal Machine
It's a fine speaker for mid scoop (I have the T100) but you can always cut mids you can't put it back in. My DSL401 came alive with a Creamback. If you don't like the mids a Greenback is a lot more scooped but much sweeter sounding than a T75. Best thing I ever did.
The best tone I've ever heard in my life in a bedroom at reasonable volume was the 50th anniversary one of these (JCM 2000 1watt) pushed by a Waza SD1 in custom mode, the guy was playing a really sweet Tele with a 4 way switch in parallel mode. It was ******g immense!
(Edit and apology below - the following info I provided yesterday on the DSL1 is incorrect). The 1 watt Marshall amps (DSL1, JCM1, JVM1) are part of the Marshall 50th Anniversary edition series. They come in a head and combo version for all three models. The DSL1 is Marshall's attempt to reproduce the tones of the 90's, the A channel is set up to sound like a Plexi, while the high gain channel is modeled after the 2203 (JCM 800 100 watt head). To Marshall's credit, they were some of the early models in this low watt range, specifically designed so you didn't have to crank your non-master volume amps to get that classic tone. I'd say the JVM1 is probably a bit closer to the territory you may like for "chugging", especially the JVM-1h (head version), since it connects nicely to any external cab. EDIT: My apologies, I was thinking this was part of the 50th Anniversary Series and didn't realize Marshall had made a different version of the DSL1H. Thanks to those below for the update, and I hope I didn't cause too much confusion. Thank you!!
This isn't that though, is it? They remade a DSL1 in their far east factory more recently (the one shown in the video). The 50th anniversary ones are all made in the UK and are from about 2012.. the DSL1H has JCM2000 written on the front
The DSL is only one that they continued to make, but these new ones aren't the same. The ones you're mentioning have a separate volume control for the clean channel, and are made differently, and valued higher.
I had the 50th jvm 1 watt, it was bad ass, but i sold it to pay for a fryette,, I miss tha little marsala, although I will never get rid of the Fryette.
This amp is NOT part of the anniversary series, the 50th ann. DSL1 is made in england. And sold for $800,, this amp is made in China and sells for $299.. but you are right the 50th JVM1 would chug better,,, just costs way more and you can't buy them anymore unless you find a used one.. so.....
To celebrate 50 years of Marshall amplification, Marshall released amps that reflect each decade throughout 2012. The '90s-voiced DSL-1H is sure to be an instant collector's item
I bought this head because of this video and I totally love the damn thing. It's the best amp I've owned for home practice and recording. I play it through a single Celestion Greenback. It should be noted that it also has a built-in power attenuator, perfect for bedroom volumes.
I bought the DSL-1 about 2 years ago right after NAMM that year and it kicks ass in your (home) studio. One of the best sounding and versatile small amps I ever owned or tried... I guess I had a pretty similar facial expression as you when I first plugged it into my 1x12" Greenback cabinet... ;-)
I have the DSL1 combo and it freakin' wails like a BEAST. The 8" speaker is a bit too bright so I built an extention cabinet using a 10" Crate bass amp with a Celestion VT Jr. speaker. I plugged with port with a thick foam pad and it DEFINITELY chugs. (I was running the amp through a pair of MG4×12's using a "cab merger" box. It was exhilarating but deafening so I built the 1×10 cab.) I have a Squier Contemporary HH Tele with Dimarzios, Super Distortion & 36th anniversary PAF, and it's monstrous sounding through the DSL1. Chug on, Ola, greetings from Greater New Orleans. Happy New Year everyone!
It's a very versatile little amp. Not only does it chug, it has a brightness on the clean channel (at low volumes) that's not common on Marshalls. Run it direct into a sound board and It sounds as good or better than any Marshall ever made.
"It's one of those tube amps that takes a while to get a sound going." All tube amps I've played need about 10 minutes to warm up, it even says so in the Marshall DSL manual that you should let it warm up for 10 minutes.
That's crap. When the sound comes it's good to go. And Standby is useless, it's bad for the amp. It's just tradition. People complain if there isn't one but no tube amp had that except a few early ones.
Haven't put this guy through a 1*12 since I live in an apartment but I do own the combo version. Honestly it has all the marshall vibes from the old times to the new one. It does have its own sound though, which is something I appreciate. I play at 0.1 watt since 1 watt is way too loud. What's not to like? Takes gain pedal exceptionally well and has a good fx loop. Perfect home use amp imo and even had the 1*12 output in case you wanna crank this for studio use. I might be biased here but honestly marshall is THE distortion sound in my head just like DS1 is the distortion box. I know this is an old rig but hey if it ain't broke.
@@TheDirtyfax ya I have a DSL 100...I know what you mean. I use a Pepers dirty tree pedal(Fortin 33 clone) and it really tightens up the gain so you can set it higher without the mud. But really, who needs that much gain lol.
Gotta love when Ola doesn't expect something to chug as well as it does. Ola, I bought a DSL40 combo in part because of this video. If the 1-watt head can chug this well, imagine what the 40-watt combo can do. Or the 100-watt head, but I didn't have room for that plus a worthwhile cab.
Well, this video was an emotional roller coaster. That little amp surprised me, it sounded amazing! Sad that it's the last video in your old place. All in all though, you looked really happy playing that amp, and that's terrific to see!
I built a fifties fender Princeton clone (basically an older champ) and it chugs with an eq and distortion. TS9 won’t make it chug because it’s low gain, but a big muff, ds1 or metal zone is wicked. Tiny tube amps can sound super good even for metal.
I just saw a commercial for yours, Keith's, and Jeff's tone pack for Bias FX II. Congrats man, you completely deserve that. Can you give us more info than the very short ad did?
I've got a schecter banshee elite 8 cats eye pearl and the finish looks similar to the one Olas playing in this vid....I freaking love the deep red/brown and the little strip of plain binding...just tickles my pickle
This amp also has beyond Marshall crisp clean highs if you want it. It's a very impressive little amp. It's basically a JCM200 but smaller and better high tones.
I run the dsl20 into a Harley Benton 4x12 and it’s amazing. Use the crate blue voodoo for low gain stuff and a second amp sound on tracks to break up the monotony.👍
Hi Ola, one of my Amps is a Marshall DSL401 Combo with a Master Volume, you can really push it to get a Great Metal Tone, I think the DSL Series of Marshall's are underrated! I was surprised how good the 1 watt sounded. Take care ♥️🎸👍. Melbourne, Australia.
I'm glad that your last vid in the iconic old home studio was one in which you found a new appreciation for a Marshall Amp! I have a few and, though they do have a few models that don't quite hit the mark of "high-gain", I pretty much love 'em all. I'm looking forward to, hopefully, seeing a few more on your channel! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year, Ola!
Thanks Ola.....I had just bought one 10 minutes before I watched this, a friend said watch this guy demo it.......now we're all pleased this amp is not a dud....thank you
Once you added the tube screamer this one slaaaaaaps. You could record this tone on a modern metalcore album and I wouldn't blink. Probably the most modern metal tone I have ever heard out of a Marshall wow.
Im going to get the DSL20HR based on this vid. You sold me on this... I was looking at a Bogner Alchemist and a 6505 MH, but this has that mid push that I need. All my heroes came up on Marshalls.
“Let’s boost this sucka” 😂 that made me lol. Thanks for trying this out! I think the newer DSL’s are less hot when it comes to the distortion channels but the speakers are better. I have the first gen DSL40C and with an eminence cv-75 it sounds badass.
That amp sounds really nice and heavy. I think a lot of people are gonna start playing these DSL Marshalls. It wouldn’t be a proper “Will it chug” video without the infamous tube screamer lol good video Ola! Btw DSL are my initials lol
Getting one today because of this video - hopefully it chugs for me. EDIT: Needed a pedal to really chug but loving it. Glad Ola made this video, really sold me on it.
Thanks Neil, looking for another head for the garage and keep going back to marshall. I have the sc20, but thats gotten so pricey its staying in the house...
The JCM 2000 DSL might just be one of the most under rated amps ever and contrary to what some elitists might say, with the same tubes in them, the new DSLs sound almost exactly the same. Great bang per buck in the DSL series
I love how around 10 years ago or so the internet hated the JCM2000s but the past few years it seems there was a change in perspective. I’ve had an ‘06 DSL50 for a while and I could never part with it.

Ola's sarcasm got you! :D
Found the American.
@@charlesmiller3278 What does nationality have to do with anything
That's crap. When the sound comes it's good to go. And Standby is useless, it's bad for the amp. It's just tradition. People complain if there isn't one but no tube amp had that except a few early ones.
That little sucker sounds awesome especially with a tube screamer! Wow. Hats off to Marshall!
Always liked that wall too.
I have one of these. I also have a Superbass. It is AMAZING how big the DSL1 sounds and feels playing it!
That amp sounds like a beast! I'm impatient to receive my Fortin Grind to get even a better tone out of it.
You know it's chugging when Ola starts dialing the gain back.
This amp has a lot of gain. Past 3/4 gain it gets muddy. I play mine at half
@@TheDirtyfax ya I have a DSL 100...I know what you mean. I use a Pepers dirty tree pedal(Fortin 33 clone) and it really tightens up the gain so you can set it higher without the mud. But really, who needs that much gain lol.
Damn that boosted tone sounded actually legit from this end of UA-cam! Wouldn't be that bad for recording imo! I'm very impressed!
1:17 laughed too hard 😂😂 out of nowhere hahaha
Yeah I got one a few weeks ago and love the sound out of the box. Deraps also plays one for EVH styles. Can’t go wrong here.
Tried this with my dad on "WIII HE HUG". This video stream and timer has been on for the past year and has no end in sight.
It is an absolute joy to watch your videos! Ola you are a kicking it bro. So happy you keep putting out content.
Was thinking about getting this for Christmas but decided to wait. Now I’m sold
DSL / TSLs are some of the best sounding amps out there, I got my hands on one and it consistently blows me away
Ola: im gonna boost this sucker.
Also Ola: Forgets to push the button to engage.
By far my fav metal youtuber!
Nothing beats Marshalls.Period!!Great video!!
Chugga Chugga Choo Choo
Goo Goo ga joob
CHOO CHOO CHOOOO
My band was writing a song and on the paper we used to put the parts in order, the breakdown was labeled “chugga chugga choo choo” lmao
you guys all choo chooo hooray
I got 69th like lmao chugga chugga
Watching this in my car and that amp sounds pretty rad. For being a little guy I am very impressed.
Been out of playing for a long time. Ola, you just helped me find my next amp. Thanks man and that Marshall with a Tube screamer sounds KILLER!
Merry chugmass!
Felix Felixer Merry chungmas
I've been looking for an amp for my very small home studio as my gigging 200W VHT power amp is beyond too loud. This looks perfect.
4:00 "it's sexually..."
Yes sir, that's a Marshall
Well, this video was an emotional roller coaster. That little amp surprised me, it sounded amazing! Sad that it's the last video in your old place. All in all though, you looked really happy playing that amp, and that's terrific to see!
Sounds so good I might actually buy one
You should.... They're fantastic with a big cabinet.
Schecters fuxking rip dude.
One of the better modern Marshall amps I've heard.
Q: How much chug is necessary?
Ola: Yes
Thanks Ola.....I had just bought one 10 minutes before I watched this, a friend said watch this guy demo it.......now we're all pleased this amp is not a dud....thank you
Yeah, sounds awesome!
What a ludicrously good sounding little amp.
“Let’s boost this sucka” 😂 that made me lol. Thanks for trying this out! I think the newer DSL’s are less hot when it comes to the distortion channels but the speakers are better. I have the first gen DSL40C and with an eminence cv-75 it sounds badass.
Saw this video the other day and I happened to see one for $290 open box this morning so I snatched it up, thanks Ola!
Damn, that amp sounds amazing!
Did anybody else notice at 8:18 that the amp had an Alice In Chains like tone to it?
That amp sounds really nice and heavy. I think a lot of people are gonna start playing these DSL Marshalls. It wouldn’t be a proper “Will it chug” video without the infamous tube screamer lol good video Ola! Btw DSL are my initials lol
Getting one today because of this video - hopefully it chugs for me.
EDIT: Needed a pedal to really chug but loving it. Glad Ola made this video, really sold me on it.
How has the marshal dsl1 been workin for you?? Im.not sure if i should get the dsl 1 or dsl 20
@@Vulgarandbored great for bedroom playing but I'm using as a pedal platform. It's still pretty loud!
@@lilivi4301 pedal platform? What dat. Im new ish to amps
@@lilivi4301 I probably need the dsl 20 for live gigs then . Thanks for the reply
@@Vulgarandbored Pedal platform means using pedals into the clean channel to get your sound instead of onboard distortion / OD etc.
I have a DSL1HR and use it the same way with the ts-9 it kicks ass sounds like my JCM 800 2204 with the ts-9 which is a great chug /metal sound
I have the older JCM 2000. Sooo underrated.
Not underrated. They are the entire reason for modern metal. They're just over criticized by gear snobs that think new is always better.
I got the DSL5C (10" combo) and the thing I like about this amp is that it sounds just good when you turn it on.
Will it chug harp edition
Killer reviews finally found some one who gets the metal sounds reviewing/demoing gear
It was begging to have the gain all the way up.
Man your face at 42 seconds.😅 So rad!!
That sounds full, fat and chuggy af, really nice!
Almost has the Anthrax Spreading the disease tone. One of the chugs you did reminded me of the start to Madhouse
The 1watt Marshall’s were my favourite the 800 is amazing 😉
Hi Neil, did you think the 1 watt sounded better than the 20?
@@PainterDans no the 20 is thicker quite like the 50
Thanks Neil, looking for another head for the garage and keep going back to marshall. I have the sc20, but thats gotten so pricey its staying in the house...
Ola your channel is one if the best guitar channels available. Your humor is the best. You always provide a good time. Getcha pull.
I had the DSL1C to piss about on in my lounge, and it was a fuckin amazing little amp. Should have kept it.
I think it more than chugged, even without the TS engaged.
Very nice nice demo of a very nice amp!!!!!
Everytime I search for a specific amp review, you always got em so now u earned a subscriber
Hi, Ola! May I suggest you always keep a 6 and a 7 string ready for the Will it Chug videos? It's always nice to hear how it fares with both a classic and a modern setup
no thanks
@@AcceleratingUniverse okay Ola.
Sounded great. Now that's a BIG chugging sound for 1 watt. Its got the Marshall mojo for sure, especially with Ola kicking its arse!
