How To Copy Artist Tones With Boss Katana MK2 Using EQ Peak Matching

  • Here I show you how you can use EQ peak matching to get within range of an artist's tone, as well as trying to add FX to it. This is a very basic tutorial to get you on the right patch to creating your own artist patches. Keep in mind that no EQ's are exact when trying to emulate an artist/musician's tone and that the other fx and using a parametric EQ can also help you fine tune the tone. You'll see that when I try to recreate the Enter Sandman clean tone.
    Also, I have no right whatsoever, playing that VH tune. I should be ashamed of myself!!!! 😆😆

    While the results you got sound good, there's a better way of EQ matching that will get you even closer to the sounds you are copying. Instead of copying the EQ curve of the reference track as it's shown in the Match EQ plugin, record a guitar track where you try to play the same thing as the reference track and then match it in the plugin. You will get an EQ curve that is the difference between the tracks - *this* is the curve you should copy into the EQ module in the Katana. It would make sense because the sound you are starting with has an EQ curve of its own already, it's not flat.
    Before recording, just make sure to try to get the distortion and effects right, so that the EQ matching is as accurate as possible.

      Only problem with that is , I want to sound like Eddie playing Eruption , but I play like a man with 2 fingers and no timing 🥺

    • @egtegs
      @egtegs 10 місяців тому +2

      @@Dad-Gad You don't have to play it exactly like the reference track, it's just a matter of being in the ballpark regarding being in the same octave, palm muting or not, etc. because those have an effect on the measured EQ curve. However, the margin of error is quite generous here, in my experience.

      @@riokinsey2134 He copied the EQ curve of the reference track into the Katana's EQ module, and what I'm saying is that he should rather copy the *difference* in EQ curves between the reference track and the Katana, because that's what's going to match Katana's EQ curve to the reference and make it sound much closer.
      Unfortunately I don't have the time right now to write up an entire guide on every step here and what it means, but I do believe everything's been mentioned already, one just needs to piece it together. Watch the video as a guide on what he does, and for my method just add what I mentioned in my original comment to that process. If you have any specific questions about that, I can answer them.

    Wow! Thank you so much for explaining your workflow. I had no idea this kind of thing was even possible. I just play around with the knobs and never get anything like the tone I'm looking for. The eq and your videos are really eye opening.

      Cracks me up every time someone mentions it. I don't know why, or better HOW I keep saying it like that. I'm going tape a piece of paper with bold letters on it that say FLAN_JER! Or maybe I'll keep saying it like that just for the sake of it. 😄

      @@Guitarnivore sorry! I thought you were goofin' and just having fun with the word. It comes from the days of mechanically creating this effect by dragging a finger on the turning outer edge of a magnetic tape reel (the "flange") and creating a changing time delay as the tape played. I am so old that I have done this with a pair of reel to reel tape players when I was a teenager.

      You can make it sound like almost anything and if you use an actual bosst pedal ib front it gives you some natural and dynamic sounds in adition to the sounds you make in eq , still no tube sound though but you can get close to some big amps

    Scott, i would be very interested to see just how much more accurate one actually CAN get using the method that egtegs told you about...putting the differences between your track and the reference track into the eq match instead of the reference track itself. Happy Holidays, bro!

I have friture on my linux system and that can also show something like what you did. Would a Dream theater / or a soundemo from petrucci maybe some day be analyzed by you ? Would be nice, but i do understand you have more to do.

    Hello I got a boss katana mkII headstock and it’s got killer sound but I’m having trouble matching it some songs I’ve tried patches but they haven’t helped the most I’ve tried copying settings does anyone have any tips on how to get those near perfect tone or any other helpful info

    • @Guitarnivore
      @Guitarnivore  Рік тому

      You may never get them perfect and with patches it also depends on what you're playing out of. Speaker sounds different than playing through the line out. Also the 50 speaker sounds different than the 100 speaker. Here is a short video that explains why it's difficult to perfectly match al album tone> ua-cam.com/video/Hl3N5WG9oSs/v-deo.html

    Maybe people will start uploading tutorials on the distorted tones. I'm going to upload a video of myself messing around with the MZ soon. I think I came up with a tone similar to a death metal band I like. I had other things to do so I didn't get around to comparing.

      There are some isolation services that can do it, but nothing free seems to work very well. I use Acoustica, which is another program that isolates them, but not very good. This might help get in the the ballpark, but I've just started trying to do things by ear, It seems to work a little better.
