    If you want a Katana save up for the Artist. It is the best Katana made. The upgraded speaker, along with all the sound shaping options on the front panel are worth the extra money over the Katana 100. I love my Artist Mk II. It is absolutely an amazing amp.

      Possibly. Counterpoint: All the functions available to the Artist can be accessed in software by the other MK 2 models and saved to the amp - where (once you have found the sound/setup that works for you) will probably not need to be accessed very often again.
      Secondly, while the Artist does feature a different (Waza) speaker, that doesn’t mean it will be to everyone’s taste. Some players doing videos on the MK 2 range have even expressed a preference for the 100 2x12 sound as it, subjectively, sounds smoother and more natural to their ears. This is not a criticism of the MK 2 Artist but more expensive may not automatically translate to “better” for everyone.

      @@jemandthemystery The convenience of the front panel controls, the Waza speaker, the bigger cabinet, Stereo Wet/Dry options with another Artist II, and the speaker out options are a bonus. I have a Kat 100 Mk II as well. I like them both but if I had to choose only one it would be the Artist Mk II. Each person should try both out to see what they like. I'd say the best option would be to get the Artist Mk II and swap out the speaker if you didn't like it. Either way, both amps are great values and are hard to beat at their price points.

      @@user-mr1ku5iz8l Is your other Kat 100 a 2x12 or single speaker. Personally, I feel there is a bigger difference between the standard 100 (single speaker) and the Artist than the 100 2x12 and the Artist. Again, no criticism of the Artist. It’s a great amp. But hey, great that Boss provides options. My only wish to make things even more interesting would be to have an Artist 2x12 in true stereo. A man can dream can’t he?… :-)

    Thanks for the video! I just got 2 Artists last week after finally deciding it was time to retire my old trusty Boogie rig! So I’m a newbie to Katana! First impressions? I agree! Straight out of the box, getting a decent sound is a breeze! However, the advantage to using the tone studio is the fact that you only have the effects that were loaded from the factory! It’s definitely advantageous to dig into the Tone Studio, as your really only scratching the surface using the panel! Stereo? Sounds amazing! Stay Blessed!

    Good video on a function that a lot of the other reviews overlook 🤘.
    Mastering all the available options for EQ/tone shaping is key to getting the most out of the Katana, but once figured out, it's an incredible box.
    You already made it sound great just out of the box without even touching on the additional SW options available through the TONE STUDIO :
    - 10-band or 3-band parametric global EQ, with up to 12dB boost
    - 2 additional 10-band or 3-band parametric EQ, with up to 12dB boost, that you can position at different points in the signal chain to be pre-amp or post amp
    - additional10-band or 3- parametric EQ, with up to 12dB boost dedicated to the SOLO BOOST function (Artist only, I believe)
    It's fkn insane, can lead to tweaking paralysis if you let it, but once sorted, it's amazing.
    If you also add the SNEAKY AMPS to the mix, the tone options become mind-blowing. Apparently though, these don't work with new Gen 3 Katanas.

    This is the Katana I would get. They are awesome. I tried them several times at Guitar Center and Sam Ash. They are great. Best solid-state amp since the Randall RG75 I was so crazy about in 1987.

    I picked up a second hand MK II artist head and I can't get a good tone of out this thing. I've tried V30s, greenbacks, and even eminence speakers. I can't good a good crisp glassy clean tone. It's impossible. I've tried the tone shape, I've tried the cabinet resonance, I've tried presence, and the EQ knobs. I can hook up ANY other head to these speakers and get a great clean tone: Orange head, H&K, etc. Never mind Vox and Fender combos.
    The distortion is brash and fizzy. It really bothers the ears on the high end. Yet, somehow, has no presence at all. You can't get it to sound "alive" in the room like any of the afore mentioned amps/heads can in the same room.
    Honestly, I hate it. I don't see the hype for this thing. It's trash in my view. Anyone want a MKII artist head?
    To ad insult to injury: I find it far too quiet with my 212 cabinets. Obviously, the claim that this is a 100 watt head is a marketing lie. It draws 77 watts from the wall. It cannot put on 100 watts RMS (which is how amps and speakers are measured).
    My oscilloscope says that this class AB poweramp only put out 64 watts at 8ohm and less than 50 watts at 16ohm. Since my 212s are 16 ohms, that explains things.

    the Boss Katana-Artist MkII can do smooth transition between channels keeping the tail end of effect when switching?

      I use my Artist with the GAFX pedal or whatever it's called. Channel switching is a breeze and smooth but I don't believe you'll achieve that tail end of an effect such as delay when you switch.

    I'd like to get this amp and a 2x12 cab. I just cant decide on the head or the combo. I like the idea of 2x12 cab, but I like options as well. And the head vs combo is only a difference of $30.

    • @efxloopjaybyrne
      @efxloopjaybyrne  10 місяців тому

      This is my struggle as well. I have the combo which sounds great and quite frankly is more than loud enough for my purposes. However because I love the amp so much I'd love to get the Head and 2x12 cab version. Plus it would be nice to have the 2x12 with the waza speakers. It could be used for any head really. These speakers are amazing and I've tried a Marshall head with them and they just work. It's just that the resale value on this sucks and if I sold it I could cover most of the cost of the head but then I'd still need to pony up $600 for the cab. I really want it though. Really though if I'm being honest with myself this combo is perfect. I could just add the cab and I would have multiple options available to me. The head really is just the this amp without the speaker. It has a few extra connections on the back but nothing that is a deal breaker for most.

    • @bsquare6809
      @bsquare6809 10 місяців тому +1

      @@efxloopjaybyrne Totally. Since you already have the combo, just buy the cab. You'll have the best of both worlds. Options are good. I don't have anything yet. So I can't decide which one to get. Whichever I pick I definately want the cab as well. What extra connections were you referring to? And most importantly, how do you like the amp in general? Do you like the tones out of the box or do you need to tweek it with boss tone studio?

    • @efxloopjaybyrne
      @efxloopjaybyrne  10 місяців тому

      Good idea. I think it has this extra air and room feel switch on the back of the head. These options are for when you connect direct out from the head. They are available in the software for the combo but they added a switch to the back of the head for easier access. I’ve never used them. As far as settings go. I don’t deep dive, I do everything on the panel. You can get deeper in the settings but I don’t feel like I’ve needed it. It takes drive and overdrive pedals like a champ.

    FYI on any katana on any dirt channel your treble should never be above 10 o'clock...your tones will all sound like ass anything about 10 o'clock i dobt care what type of guitar or pickup only exception be EMG . Like you vodeo but pkease turn your treble down. Been a pro at katana for 7 😢now just got the artist 2x12 cab and head.....btw as much as i love it i feel the normal head would have been fine. The contour on these artist combined with cab resonance as you just pointed out is the key to tone on the artist.....but can only actually save the 8 presets on the PC in BTS not on the front panel....which is sort of weird but ok...i have mine on 3 and deep with the IR in conour on Green all the time anyway do mine works out great 👍🏻....i will be deep diving on BTS soon though....i do know just like a Helix in BTS is where the true tones live on these things
