    A ride taking in one of the biggest descents in the Lake District - the Gatesgarth Pass.
    This ride takes in Mardale, a remote and atmospheric area of the Lake District. Though this valley can get boggy so should only be done after prolonged dry spells.
    I did this ride with Andy of the Trail-Finder UA-cam channel: / charlie2015
    You can find this route in my Lake District Guidebook: www.amazon.co.uk/Boydon-Mount...
    Filmed on a GoPro Hero 7 Black

    Brave. I'd be off going down there, plus broken spokes and no more brake traction, etc. Great ride!

      Ha thanks. It's not too bad, just really loose. No major drop offs though

      Yes that's the one. Don't do that route in October though, it will be too boggy in the middle sections. Needs a long dry spell. A lot of people combine Gatesgarth into a loop with Nan Bield Pass. That's a really good day but loads of hike a bike.

    Nice xc loop, can’t agree with the
    “One of the biggest in the lakes” for gatesgarth, it’s only just over a mile of descent, there’s plenty bigger/longer/better?
    The withnail and I trivia was new to me 👍

      Not the biggest but has to be one of. I'm talking legal bridleway/byways. 👍

    Greta vid ( as usual). Whilst I won't do the ride for a while yet, it's a bit too wet, but having looked at the map, I wanted to ask if you've ever ridden back via the old Corpse Road instead of tarmac along the side of Haweswater, turning right at Hollow Stone?

    • @Lakedistrictrider
      @Lakedistrictrider  Рік тому

      Hi Neil, no I've not. The main reason being that it is very steep on the Haweswater side and it would be a long push up to the top. I suspect the riding down the other side wouldn't be up to much either. Its not too bad in the other direction, and I have an old video on the channel doing the Corpse Road descending to Haweswater on a particularly wet day a few years ago.

      Cheers Ian. Maybe I'll just stick to there lake side, not like it's not a beautiful spot to ride after all. I thought it was worth asking though, just in case it was great alternative

    How often do you replace brake pads? I'd say I do mine every 10 weeks or so.

    • @Lakedistrictrider
      @Lakedistrictrider  3 роки тому

      Maybe annually. Not very often. Do you drag your brakes a lot?

      @@Lakedistrictrider I have to, you see some of the descents I go down are 50 - 60% gradient over loose gravel, take your brakes off for 2 seconds and that is already too fast to be able to stop again safely. I have taken to walking down a few of them but where I live there are slopes and more slopes, can't walk down them all and as I said, a lot of the descending is too dangerous to take at speed. This segment is uphill but sometimes I go down it, in the middle the gradient is too severe and that is over loose gravel and dirt www.strava.com/segments/18351841

      It can be a bit of a hard slog in the middle. Definitely one to do when (very) dry. The views, solitude and final descent make it worth it for me.

    What bike are you riding?

  • @christrickett3291
    @christrickett3291 3 роки тому

    OK, how about I pick your brains on brakes? In terms of brake pad wear only, is it better to brake steadily down a slope so as to avoid going too fast, or to leave the braking till later in the descent and brake harder when necessary? Safety considerations aside (the rider will need to respond to their own ride), but just in terms of the brake pads, is this something you know? Thanks. PS If you are on Strava I am, same username as here, Almaty - Kazakhstan, should you wish.

    • @Lakedistrictrider
      @Lakedistrictrider  3 роки тому

      I'm not really an expert mate but I tend to use short sharp bursts of braking rather than having the brakes on for a long time. I don't do that from a wear perspective, I do that because I once cooked a set of brakes on a long descent to the point where they slmost completely fsiled. One of my most scary moments on a bike. I think that was more to do with the hydrolic fluid. Sorry prob not the best answer but, for me st least, short burst braking works better
