The pickup didn't realise he hit a motorcyclist because without any shadow of doubt he was engrossed with his mobile. The stereotype of the young male pickup driver with high-vis stickers on the truck, many of them drive aggressively, speed and use their phones whilst driving. What a hero that motorcyclist is - I wish him all the best in his future.

The phone law is nowhere near strict enough. I also automatically thought just by the description that the person could have been on the phone. Times need to change and soon because these incidents keep occurring.

This reminds me of an incident that happened to a work colleague about 15 years ago. He was on a dual carriageway in the outside line over taking 2 vehicles a Toyota Land cruiser and a Ford fiesta.
Then the driver of the Land cruiser, without indicating, pulled out to overtake the fiesta, knocking him clean off the bike. At first she didn't stop. It was only later that she reported it to the police.
My colleague spend 3 months in hospital and was off work for 9 months in total. He told me she only got 6 points and £700-£800 fine.

It would be interesting to know the outcome of the legal case, was a mobile phone involved, fell asleep at the wheel? Huge pay out from insurance company and rightly so, should be American scale damages. Not sure I would get back on a bike after that experience, very positive attitude from rider to make the best of the terrible circumstances.

They treat bikers better today. When I had a similar thing happen in 1980 the police went to town to prove it was my fault, saying I wasn't wearing hi-vis. (no legal requirement) I was riding in an inconsiderate manner (I was stationary) My lights weren't on (It was a perfect Summer's day- no legal requirement) My indicators didn't work. (They did before the bike was totalled) I shouldn't have been stationary (it was a red light at roadworks) I should have stopped by the kerb so cars could see the red. (What?) In the end they decided to let me off and called it knock for knock so I had to use my insurance to get a new bike. Luckily I wasn't injured or in a come or they'd have made something up and when I came round I'd have been in the dock in a hospital bed.

There's just too many inconsiderate idiots, weighing many times more and they're heavily protected in a cocoon of luxury and distractions. This video graphically emphasises why I decided not to ride again. It was very much a passion and like many passions, someone else always spoils it.

After seeing the effects of sleeping at the wheel in a recent accident in front of me , and the fact that he carried on into the bushes. He was clearly drifted asleep , in cases where especially a motorcycle stationary in a lay-by , gbh and dangerous driving especially with life changing injuries , it should carry an automatic prison sentence, I know people that have hit animals and deliberately hounded cyclists, that just don’t give a shout about it, the law needs to be tougher
