The scary part is the driver had ZERO idea what he was doing was wrong and even by the end was still cleared confused
I think the " oh Jesus christ" at the end, when he pulled straight into lane one from the hard shoulder summed it up nicely
That does tend to happen when you don't speak the language
This guy seemed to be a recent import from East Asia, but even dyed-in-the-wool native Britons (or whatever, it's a universal thing) can become highly confused, even affronted and outraged when you confront them on lane hogging. Because this jars their perception of themselves as "very safe drivers".
Somebody has to tell these slowpokes that slow does not necessarily mean safe!
Or acting.
@@lightyagami1752 South Asia. India Pakistan or Bangladesh.
Told him to go up to 40-50 on the hard shoulder and not pull out and he does exactly what the officer told him not to do 😂
At that point I would have pulled him over again and told him he's not driving anymore.
I wonder which one of his mates took his driving test for him🤔 Just saying😄
Problem there seemed to be lack of comprehension combined with an explanation involving more advanced English grammar, considering the person's obvious limited English.
@@fredscratchet1355 Probably got a foreign license
and then the vid stops, just AS he is going against what the cop instructed, which was the title of the vid? wtf?
am i missing something here?
The driving standards in this County are shocking. 90% of people do not keep left on the motorway. Its a disgrace and something should be done. I drive all over the UK & Europe and its only here where people can't drive!!! Motorways would run freely if they were used properly...😡
Absolutely agree
You wanna come to Northern ireland, the outside lanes of dual carriageways and 'motorways' are constantly mis used here, shocking behaviour, made worse by totally oblivious drivers driving below available speed limits! I arrived from the south east England and I was horrified how bad the problem is here!! The Cops are hopeless as far as in concerned, so I now undertake as flashing lights doesnt seem to wake people up. We also have newly passed drivers on restricted plates on max permissbale of 45mph in the outside lanes! I hate it and feel I shouldn't have to undertake, but its the only way to make progress here!!!!!!!
it's because we aren't taught on them. even tho instructors can how take you one many still don't because they see motorway lessons as something to be done post test.
@@TheWeepingDalek I agree that doesnt help but - keep left unless overtaking is a pretty simple rule to follow...
Do you do much Euro driving?. UK is around the top 5 safest countries to drive in.
I wish they would do this more often.
I genuinely cannot remember the last time I saw a Police car on a motorway!! 😮
As a regular driver of the motorway i find myself taking the role of a police officer flashing idiots to move over hogging lanes. The other day, a middle lane hogger wqas causing lane 3 to bottle neck, so i pulled in flashed him to move over and he did and as i passed, he flipped the bird 🤣🤣🤣 oh well
Exactly.
@@real-eyes-realise-real-lies If the hogger has lane 2 moving slower why go all the way over to lane 3 into a bottleneck?
@@Seanmcdhuibhne m1 has 4 lanes. I was in the outside, pulled into lane 3 ( the new middle lane hog zone) flashed him to move into lane 2.
As an hgv driver i see a lot of drivers enter the motorways and go straight into the middle lane or lane 3 of 4, regardless of traffic conditions. Im also aware when approaching off-slips of cars in lanes 2 or 3 that are doing about 60 mph as they often cut across lanes to exit the motorway at the last second. They are the same people.
Funny that as someone who drives the motorway every day hgv drivers are the worst drivers on the road, closely followed by immigrants but at least they have an excuse “ no license “
@keidicko yup, the 'pull into the next lane and indicate at the same time without looking' brigade. Don't even get me started on the Duelling Lorries that clog up dual carriageways like the A34 just because one can go 1/4mph faster than the other, until they come to a hill....
@@keidicko you probably couldn't get a HGV license.
I think it should be mandatory to have practical motorway training as part of the test??? 👍👍
@gregpodmore2850 Agreed! It must be said that the idiots in cars far outnumber the few bad hgv drivers, who mostly have foreign plates on. I too have seen the practices described by the OP.
Wonder who sat his test for him 🤔
Driving test has nothing to do with the motorway.
About time it's included in driving lessons
@@Indoor_Carrot you still have to learn the highway code for the written test though, and you can't take the physical test until you pass it.
@@mydogeatspuke nobody can remember the theory test questions after they've passed it. There's a huge difference between ticking a box in a multi-choice question and practically doing something.
Imagine a first aid course just telling you "do cpr" and you never practicing it. You'd never be able to reliably do it.
@@Indoor_Carrot spot on, there's a need for minimum competency and basic motorway technique because SO many people still do the basics like enter and exit motorways too slowly or just merge without giving way, which are all crazy things to do and contribute massively to congestion at junctions. Seeing how confused he was, I'm guessing that lane discipline isn't really important in his country of origin.
That or he doesn't care
Motorways probably do not exist in his country of origin.
Plenty of people born and bred in the UK who also don't see lane discipline as a priority. What's his country of origin got to do with anything?

Not indicating has got steadily worse over last 10 years
It's difficult to understand anything someone says when you don't speak the language
That's his own fault, he wanted to live here.
Great policing. Well done.
I disagree. It was clear that the driver believed he was correct to stay in the middle lane and the officer did not try to re-educate him. He also didn't make enough of an effort to ensure he had understood his instructions on re-joining - he should have asked the driver to repeat them back. Poor policing.
@@maxb5028 Think he was leaving that to the retraining course. He clearly didn't understand English too well, the hard shoulder of a motorway isn't somewhere to spend any more time than you have to.
@@maxb5028 shouldn’t be on the road to be re educated. The highway code has not changed much on the usage of lanes, what a terrible explanation for this poor standard of driving. Wake up.
Lane hogging (especially middle lane hogging) has become rife over the last 20 years or so.
It's definitely worse now than ever.
We often see middle lane hoggers at 50mph lacking situation awareness and the chaos they're causing behind them with vehicles bunching up leading to congestion. It's as if they drive blinkered with steering wheel gripped tightly, gazing straight ahead only.
Avoid bunching up and congestion, just passing the hogger on left.

In North America you can pass in any lane but I'm not sure some muppets are responsible enough to use their mirrors correctly and pass safely in the UK🤔
@@GManWrites You can do so in UK also. Not many Brits know that.
@@mikehunter2844 Only in certain circumstances such as slow traffic moving in queues and your lane is moving faster than the lane on your right, another example is when average speeds are in operation and the speed is posted on the overhead gantry but you are going faster than the lane on your right. There are other reasons as well but by and large the rule is keep left unless overtaking.
@@GManWrites
The UK Highway Code on overtaking on left are advisory wording. If a rule states you Must or Must Not do it then that rule is a legal requirement.
@Mike Hunter I think it's only an offence if after undertaking you change lane's. I do this all the , it has no effect on most drivers who just carry on lane hogging . The old adage " Keep left unless overtaking " doesn't work with quite a few motorists. 👍👍
I learnt to drive in Australia in the 1970s and at that time we had no 'keep left' law. I came to the UK in 1989 and was pleasantly surprised that the 'keep left' was observed. Sadly, as the years have gone on the driving standards have dropped and now it's like the 'Wild West' out there.
There's a lot of third world driving out there!
I regularly drive on the M1 freeway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, and you see so many muppets just sitting in lane 4 when there's a huge gap in lane 3.
A certain ethnic group are well known for having had other people take the test. Often small, short sighted, driving luzury SUVs. Parking is a 5 minute multi back and forth operation; joining motorways often involves SLOWING DOWN on the access ramp@@coover65
you say that but standerds during tests for cars and motorcycles have gone up lol.
They should utilize the overhead gantry signs to advise drivers against hogging the middle lane.
The drive stopped just didn't know the highway code around the motorway, so he wasn't even trying to lane hog, but worrying that a driver can be using the motorway without knowledge of how it works, and worse, that other drivers around him have no idea he just doesn't understand the highway code.
Simple answer. He shouldn't be on the roads then
Points! He's passed a driving test therefore he should know how to do it properly
@@colinscutt5104 you can drive on a non-uk license for 12 months before you need to take a uk driving test. he could have got his license anywhere
@@thisthingsibelief4791 thats insane
@Colin scutt yep, they need to change this crazy rule. Maybe anyone from abroad who wishes to drive on UK roads should take a cut down version of a theory test online and pass before they are allowed to drive.
Keep left unless overtaking!
Its not difficult is it 🙄
I never had motorway lessons, they weren't heard of when I passed my test, but I was always taught, the left lane is the driving lane, the other two are overtaking lanes unless you're instructed to use a different lane for any reason.
Or if lane 1 is clear ahead then stay in it and undertake.
@@mikehunter2844 if you are in lane 1 (the driving lane) and you don't leave lane 1 but you pass the car, that is "making progress in the driving lane" a undertaking and overtaking are manoeuvres, so to undertake, you would have to be in the overtaking lane, pull into the driving lane, pass the obstructing vehicle in the driving lane and then pull back out into the overtaking lane, that is illegal and would get you in trouble if you got caught, it's recognised as dangerous driving, making progress in the driving lane could be argued as technically you've done nothing wrong
@@andrewgage6942 If you stay in lane 1 it would be impossible to pass the car that's making progress in the driving lane.
As long as you don't weave in and out of lanes dangerously there is no law that prohibits you from moving from lane 2 into 1 after an overtake, undertake a car that's in 2 then back again to lane 2 to overtake.
driving licence bought i am sure
Guaranteed
At least that's one less lane hogger 😆
Probably doesn't understand what he did wrong and will do it again.
Multiply this traffic copper by a thousand and we might have a working road system again.
At least he didn’t spout the usual ‘I’m in the FAST lane’.😂
Probably only used to driving Donkey's. 🤣🤣.
This reminds me of the Rob Byrydon sketch, as he drove along gingerly in the middle lane, ( ...known to some as the 1st overtaking to avoid nit picking) : " I must be in the correct lane, look, everyone's following me!"
Greatest love affair since Romeo and Juliet: lane huggers and the middle lane 💘
Lane hoggers and people that don't indicate are the worst. Watching this was cathartic 😁
Lane hogging is still a massive problem . I drove on the M25 last week and lane 1 is rarely never used on a Sunday when hgv traffic is minimal .
No one’s in it and it causes lane 3 to slow down
If lane 1 is empty then why do drivers complain about hoggers?
Hate to say it but this driver’s command of the language says it all!
I always exaggerate my return to lane one like that after passing them in lane three 😂
I do the same I do it slowly with my indicator on for a long time with hope they notice. I do it safely and with consideration for other road users
ahh the old swoop across the nose.. i know it well
The driver replied with “yeah” a few times… but obviously didn’t understand the Police advice 😔
Only shipping lanes he had to worry about to get here.
Travelling on the M1 despite the penalties I often see drivers using their mobiles so it’s not just lane hogging that’s a problem.
Foreigner doesn't understand rules of road
He must've taken an English driving test its assumed, I suspect someone else did the their and test for him??? 😂😂😂😂
In my experience middle lane hoggers are generally drivers who are not confident and use the excuse that they like the middle lane because they then have a choice of lanes if they need to change. Most are aware outside lanes are overtaking lanes, but they don't care. It's rarely policed unfortunately.
Unfortunately there are quite a lot of drivers like this.
I was driving on the motorway last week when I approached a car on the hard shoulder. It started moving forwards, indicating to rejoin the motorway so I moved into lane 2 for it. As I got there - still somewherre near the speed limit - the car moved straight into lane 2 at 15~20mph and continued in that lane...I couldn't have stopped but I did get around her.
She did nothing wrong. She's a woman!
I account this every day, as a courier driver, should be more motorway police to stop and issue fines to those who consider they owe the roads, perhaps unmarked police 🚔 cars 🤔
no money to be made in that
Well said 👏
which lane do you drive in??
@Dee Haytch hi 👋, inside lane unless overtaking....
Obviously don't need GCSE English to be a delivery driver! You both have that in common 🙃
Around the M3 Ascot junction the problem used to be fast lane hogging. The Alphas joining the motorway naturally head straight for lane 3 leaving lanes 1 & 2 clear. I once had lanes 1 & 2 all to myself for 2 miles. I was doing 70mph in lane 1, the queue in lane 3 was doing 60 at most.
Quite common that, lane 1 is usually the clearest, safest and fastest lane to be in these days, as the other two lanes are so busy :-)
@@MJ-kf8zl I agree. When traffic is slow, lane 1 is the safest place to be, especially if the hard shoulder is still there. It’s not worth getting in lane 3 for an extra 5mph.
You mean Bagshot - Ascot's several miles from the M3. Nice try to make the M3 sound posh! 🤣
@@Hamish_A I was working in Ascot, so to me it was the Ascot exit.
I know this stretch very well and lane hogging is terrible along there. I'll be in my works van in lane 1 at about 73-74mph and every time I want to overtake I either get someone who's been lane hogging sitting at the same speed as me or as I'm trying to pull back in they speed up. It gets very annoying as soon as I pull back in behind them they then slow back down.
inexperienced to motorway ettiquete? however show him a dingy!!!
These really help me. Thank you, channel 5, keep uploading these. These help me in the UK.
Sounds like you need some more lessons 🤔
And apply for a uk test including theory. Stay in lane 1 too….
I hate people sitting at 75mph in the outside lane holding me up when I'm trying to break the law properly.
Your comment sounds like sarcasm. If it is, you should know that the rule is to keep left unless overtaking, it doesn’t matter how fast or slow you’re going. Drivers do not have the right to sit in lane three just because they’re doing 75mph.
@@Mark-Stone who'd be overtaking them apart from emergency vehicles?
@@gettingbettereveryday350 That’s irrelevant. The rule is keep left unless overtaking; your speed is as meaningless to this rule as other people’s speed.
@@Mark-Stone that's a long way of saying no-one.
@@gettingbettereveryday350 You think that was a long answer? Two sentences? No wonder you’re struggling to understand why your speed is irrelevant to the fact that you should keep left unless overtaking.

I was stunned too..
Everyone knows things don't happen unless you see them happen.
Really does my head in while these idiots who think the motorways are for them only . Totally ignorant and have no idea how they slow down the movement of cars . If I was a traffic cop I would book every single one 🤬🤬
Here here, I completely agree with you, on the basis there were more cops on the roads!!
If lane 2 is moving slower then pass on either side. The ones who won't undertake are as bad as the hogger.
You wouldn't believe this unless it was caught on camera 🙈 unbelievable
You would if you drive on Britains motorways regularly. There are some places where it is more common than others (Around Birmingham seems to be a spot for significant poor driving).
did he just do what he was just told not to do and pull out into lane 1 at the end of the vid😂
It's as if they were never taught how to drive on a motorway whilst having lessons to pass their test... oh that's right, they NEVER were... 🤦♂🤦♂
It's about time motorway driving was compulsory in learning and part of the test!
Agreed totally!!
as much as i could agree, there are counties in the uk that don't have any motorways, making a learning and a test very very difficult.
@@MarcP666 Then you amend the test to be able to pass to drive on motorways or not, a bit like automatic and manual. If you are in a county that has no motorways (and you're likely to never use one) then take the non-motorway test. If at a later date you wish to use motorways there can be a separate advanced test just for motorways that you can do to allow you to drive on motorways. Either way people would be learning to drive on motorways and be taught by a professional before driving on a motorway.
Some people still call lane 1 'the slow lane' & lane 3 'the fast lane'
I always ask what's the speed limit in lane 3 & get 70 as an answer. I then ask the same question for lane 2, & then 1. Same answer 70. They then usually answer . Oh, yea! not really thought about it that way.
Most people think if lane 4 is doing 50mph then that's the speed limit for all other lanes.
I suspect a lot of drivers don't even know they're supposed to move left unless overtaking.
Couple of weeks ago Saturday morning 5.30am m25 police car and me in Lane 1 doing 70mph catch up to a big van in Lane 4 doing about 50-55mph after a couple of minutes copper gets cheesed off moves in to lane 4 puts sign on back window 'use correct lane' van moves over to lane 2 copper comes off at next junction van moves back in to lane 4 🙄
The problem is that the UK recognised his license (that is odds on he bought) he has from the EU country he comes from where passing a test is quite easy if you have the funds / connections.
He seemed to be of Chinese origin by the way he spoke!
Finally FINALLY a police video i'm with all the way 👍 excellent.

That's why the video clip has the title it does. 🙄
Ooh get you!😄
There weren't many cars driving from Kent to Bedfordshire between 00:00 and 02:00 on Boxing day morning this year, but 9/10 of those I did see were all in the wrong lane. I just don't understand it.
People who say a lane hogger brings 2 overtaking down to 1 are nearly as bad as the hogger.
As the officer said I want you to accelerate to 40 45 on the hard shoulder before moving onto the motorway, I thought they'll never do that, most never do. Never been in an accident, but seen loads in their rear mirror.......
Proceeds to drive on the hard shoulder until pulled over again
The truck driver at the beginning cut across two lanes, not three. He was in the inside lane (aka Lane 1), and cut across to the outside lane (aka Lane 3). That's 2 lanes.
Had a car doing this on the M9 at Stirling yesterday.
Although it’s a “motorway”, it is only two lanes.
It’s a 70mph average speed camera area so I tend to just set the cruise control and sit happily in the left lane.
Unfortunately the other car decided that it would sit in the outside lane for about 7 miles. It was only because there as a roundabout coming up (yip, on a motorway) that he went into the left lane, stuck on his right hand indicator, and went all the way round in the wrong lane! 🤦🏻♂️
Another fine British citizen
Bravo Mr policeman
The issue here is the amount of foreign drivers who were not trained on our roads. 1 in 4 drivers are not British born.
Looks like the driver was pulling out before getting up to speed in the hard shoulder.
Stay on hard shoulder until you get 50mph then pull out. Don't just pull out.
Driver just pulls out "oh Jesus christ"🤣🤣🤣
Does anyone know what episode and series number this is to watch the full episode?
What episode please?
I bet he's gone straight back to lane 3 🤣
I was always taught to use the outside lanes same as I would a toilet - only if I have to
This guy needs to do a patrol on the M8 in scotland.
Cop, what are you talking about saying "lane 2 to lane 3 to lane 4 to overtake him"? Isn't it a bit of lack of knowlede to not know undertaking up to 70mph is legal in UK?
You could ask these people, what they thought of the pandemic.. They'd reply "oh what's that then".
If you have the daily pleasure of heading from the North circular on to the M11 to Stansted airport you get middle lane hoggers every journey and you can bet they are Uber cabs, I think it’s compulsory to be oblivious to your surroundings in the Job description 😂
Lane hogging is classed as Driving Without Reasonable Consideration For Other Road Users, and that is a sub-section of Careless Driving. So my question is, on an empty motorway except for one car in lane 2 how could it fall under CD?
I drive many miles on motorways and have never seen the police ever pull anyone in for lane hogging..why?.
Because the police you saw weren't doing a documentary for chanel 5
Police resources are very stretched thanks to the Tories, so lane hogging seems like an over the top thing to spend those few resources on.
I wish middle lane hogging in Australia was a thing. The default seems to be the right lane, nose to tail with an empty middle lane. Infuriating
"Ah Jesus Christ" and Mr lane hoggers back in the middle lane,,better rebook him another driver education course. 😏🙄🤣
Also makes you wonder how many new arrivals don't have MOT, insurance basic English to read the Highway code.
It’s more of a hinderance when you need to turn left and there’s no cars in the right hand lane at traffic lights.
He doesn't even speak English properly, yet you expect him to understand the rules written in English?
100% agree with the officer’s assessment. Lane hogging is the top frustration on UK motorways. Why is it that the same drivers obey the “move to the slowest lane” in France and as soon as they hit the UK roads they sit in the middle lane???!
If you ask people what annoys them most about driving on the motorway, most people will tell you it's lane hogging.
And who is it that lane hogs? Most people.
This one didn’t understand a word of what the cop said to him. No surprise they’re driving like this they don’t even have lanes where they come from.. makes you wonder how he got his hands on a driving license to begin with.
Need more police patrols on the M11, Lane 2 seems to be the option for most...Lane 1 for lorries, Lane 2 for hoggers and Lane 3 is packed with people trying to overtake hoggers
Why is lane 3 packed with people trying to overtake hoggers? It's just a lane moving at 55mph or less
@@Seanmcdhuibhne not everyone drives to the limit, so when you get someone overtaking at 56 this soon causes a queue
One of his uncles took his test for him I bet. Quelle surprise 😂😂
Can’t really get my head around the idea that a police officer would allow somebody to drive away if they felt they had to explain something as basic as how to rejoin a motorway. 🤯
He has no legal power to stop him doing so.....
Totally agree 👍
Why don’t you say which season & episode this is?
It really is annoying when I’m doing 110mph and there’s a lane hogger doing the speed limit 😉
Big Big problem on the roads. some people dont even move for police with their lights on
Worse than some drivers constantly moving in and out of lanes every 5 seconds to overtake, speeding up and slowing down. Smooth and consistent driving with the minimum of manoeuvres is what should be aimed for.
Yes OK 👍 I don't understand any englich
This guy would be a model driver in the USA
What episode is this?
There used to be a lot more motorway police but the powers that be seem to have decided that speeding is the only driving issue so police have been replaced by cameras over time. So much cheaper but all other sorts of bad and dangerous driving are missed.
Clearly hasn't passed his test
It's not lane hoggers that bother me, it's 40 ton lorries who are twenty feet behind me at 60mph.
