This is awesome. I'm not a cobbler, just a person with shoes. I've been using old mix of Florsheim and Nordstrom wooden shoe trees for my cowboy boots and dress shoes. These were wooden with hinge and springs.
I'm excited to try making my own with a 3d printer

It would be really cool to see an example of the lasts being nailed into. This would be a game changer if it can withstand multiple lasting processes - but I am concerned that they will not be as hearty as HDPE lasts.

PETG can handle multiple rounds of lasting just fine. Durability is not the issue. The main downside of PETG over HDPE is that it is a harder to nail into, but with sharp nails it is not an issue.
A high shore hardness TPU, like 64D, on the other hand, will act much more like HDPE, but is trickier to print. I've experimented with this a bit but have had some warping issues. Will be trying some more at some point.

@@samlochner6315 Yeah for sure. I was mainly thinking about how HDPE kind of "self heals" itself when repeatedly punctured. Does PETG have similar properties?

@@Aeon_Scipher It is somewhat similar in that way. When a nail is put in directly beside another hole, the original hole closes up a bit. It's not like PLA that is brittle and would break away.

@@Aeon_Scipher have you ever thought of adding a removable insert that could be made out of a replaceable plastic? When I made shoes we only put like 2 tacks in them as long as you're not actually nailing as you are lasting so just attaching the insoles with a few tacks this looks absolutely fine get a few 100 repairs off them. I recently printed out my first pair of Lasts out of ABS and it's terrible but Even so I can still probably make a dozen pair off this pair of last easy just make sure that your wall thickness is ample and your infill is strong. The first Test last I printed was way too fragile.
