The type of wood. The cheapest wood at that time, which is hard to some extent and clogged to some extent. Any wood is acceptable. Also use laminated wood. "Tsuga(栂)" in the video.

Not criticizing or complaining, but there are easier ways to make a last. That being said I absolutely love the handmade aspect of these lasts. They are beautiful, works of art all on their own. I couldn’t want for a more entertaining last build.
This is utterly amazing. I think it would be much easier if Kazuma were to start rough shaping with a band saw and then finish up with hand tools. I have a complete shop yet I don't have 1/10th of the skill. Kazuma is amazing and this video was very well edited.
