We've long looked forward to the time when 3D printing becomes advantageous not only for prototyping parts, but for the manufacture of consumer products. This is the adidas 4DFWD, a running shoe with a unique 3D printed midsole made by Carbon. Adam Savage visits the headquarters of Carbon to learn how adidas designers engineered the lattice design with 3D printing in mind, and how the material scientists at Carbon made it possible to produce the 4DFWD shoe at scale.

You could technically have 4 maximum , one light, one intense laser light , one high heat, and one that is just one level above that, to not damage the other one , maybe one more for 5 bonds, but that is stretching it too thin, more feasible is a freezing bond before the heat in one , bringing it low on temperature to change the state then lock it with the heat from the other bonds.

What a moment to be alive, I cannot even decide which is the part that exites me more, the good manufacturing practices, and how they got over the nuances about the final form with the oven and A base mold, the interdisciplinary innovation going back and forth with chemical engineering to make an elastomeric kind of material filled up with something that makes it more rigid, the optimization in the process of waste handling, and the innovation in the sources or raw material

adam is such a good interviewer.
his knowledge and enthusiast is contagious and it clearly affecting those people he interview.
you can see these engineers also get giddy when they explained their technology to him and when someone actually listen and understand everything you said and genuinely amaze with your passion/work, it's hugely affecting you,.
It gives you confidence and excitement when you doing your presentation and i'm sure it also gives them more energy and motivation to keep creating and innovating even after the interview is done, not to mention it came from adam savage himself.
    this is great.

4d soles are a game changer i've had them for years. the soles never cave or lose there function. hiking, running and dancing. eventually the fabric material of the shoe falls apart after year+ of consistent wear but the soles and the lattice maintain. only shoe where the fabric fails before the the sole

Not true. Barefoot shoes also tend to last for thousands of miles before the upper starts wearing out. Xeroshoes famously has a 5,000 mile warranty. Most cushioned shoes only last around 500 miles because the foam layer inevitably breaks down unevenly.

SOO COOL!!!

A humble input for this design, the forward motion of the lattice is a great way of directing lost energy, over a distance it would be curious to see the small %age of extra distance covered during a run. For a critical viewpoint, as this is adding a small amount of external forced, could this exasperate or inhibit muscular issues like achilles problems? Asking because I'm unsure. One other thing, won't the lattice be a stone and other contaminant trap? This is not meant to be a negative comment, just some things that came to my mind.

this is a really great vid. I've always loved the vids about how things are made or can be made. And Adam Savage you bring that regularly and you're awesome for it. BUT one thing I just noticed here in this clip that makes me want to go back and re-watch all the other vids is that several times in this video like during the 9:00 minutes segment when the engineer is explaining the original polymers and their functions and stats before and after printing composition, he was using all the terms that guys in your field understand, with the ease of the ABC's song, but to a guy like me, it just sounded like I was listening to MATRIX CODE. To say I was getting lost would be putting it diabolically mild. But you interjected and included your LEGO analogy and the edited graphics you included into the space really brought me back into the loop. "6-year old....legos....stacking...." Now THAT'S more my speed! lol. AH-HAH!!! I get it!
Your explanations are always courteous to include the rugular guys' level of understanding, not just the awesome, and amazing genius level stuff. I'm rambling, but I just had to stop the vid here at 9:17 because with all the awesomeness in this video, the coolest part was that you tranlated this part for me and I always appreciate that! DAPS!!!

Overall compared to some shoes they are, but I think Nike's Zoom X running shoes have massively beat them in this department, where they are BOTH springy AND comfortable as hell - Zoom X shoes are THE most comfortable shoe, bar none.
