We have a deaf alter who may eventually make her own video. Her name is Naomi, we will show her this video! It'll hopefully inspire her to feel more comfortable coming forward for her own series where she wants to teach ASL. Thank you Roger!

Didactic D.I.D it is amazing to me, that a “hearing body” can have a deaf alter. As a sign language user, it makes me wonder if my deaf friends could have been hearing if their brain wired differently. I struggle a lot with fantom (did I spell it right?) pain, and they can’t seem to figure out what it is, because they can’t figure out WHY my nerves return pain messages to my brain. Because they definitely do sound the alarm all the time. Maybe my brain is just wired that way? Who knows. It’s really interesting though, it makes me wonder what we ACTUALLY know about our brain. We now some, but not a lot. Btw, does Naomi use sign language? If so; 🤟🏼😸

    • @hazeld8016
      @hazeld8016 5 років тому +8

@@Surdeigt I believe the thinking behind phantom pain is that nerve paths can get so well worn that even if there is no reason to be firing, they will fire anyway because they've been doing it for so long. DID is a neurological disorder (with MRIs showing different parts of the brain activating before and after switches). Maybe alters missing senses reside in parts of the brain that cannot access those senses. Sometimes the loss of a sense is due to a structural issue, but it's often a neurological issue (the brain being wired differently) because the neurological system is so complicated.

Warren is mute. For the longest time we did not even know he had a name because he never spoke to anyone. I'd have people come up to me and ask if I was mad at them or something and I'd have no idea what they were talking about. A neighbor lady I'd never even met before said she tried to say hi to me but I just ignored her.
The only thing I knew about Warren is that he liked to explore. He'd always show up when I went to a new place and then I'd come out completely lost having no clue where I am.
When I went to visit an ex out of state of course Warren came out. My ex had been informed that I might stop talking and wander off so when this happened she pretty much blocked the only exit from her apartment, handed him a note pad and pen and would not let him leave till he agreed to answer some questions and that he had to promise to come back to the apartment not just leave my body some where I won't recognize. So that's how we learned his name after many many years of just calling him the explorer or the wanderor.
He's not likely to show up online considering we practically had to force him to interact with someone the first time. He's very shy around literally everyone even us. I'd like to know about him and why he's the way he is but I don't want to keep having to trap him any more than we have to. As long as I don't end up lost again he can do whatever he wants. And so far it's been good. I mean I haven't ended up lost in the forest even once since that night. ☺

      @alexk7973 5 років тому +29

If you know his name now, why not leave messages for him, telling him about yourself? Maybe after a while he might start to feel a connection to you and open up? Kind of like with a stray animal. You can trap it and force interaction or you can just continue to show up and make yourself available. It might work or maybe not, but I guess it's worth a try, whether innerworlds (if you have an idea of places he might frequent and find your messages) or outside. So long as you don't give him the feeling he HAS to reciprocate, he might be more willing to one day actually do it 🤔

I'm an alter and I'm selectively mute. I can sometimes talk to my dads and my siblings. But not anyone else. I'm working on being able to talk to other people but it's hard. I hate talking. I just type what I want to say on our phone and show people instead. In our inner world I am a shapeshifter and prefer to be an animal a lot of the time. I like to be a tiger or a bear. I don't have to talk then either. Thank you for making a video about mute alters. -Jax

Try not to get anxious about taking to more people, just go at your own pace and be comfortable. Also you sound like a really awesome person/animal/being/consciousness, (Sorry if that was insensitive, but I wasn’t sure how you identify.) I also think it would be super cool to be able to shape shift, that it certainly not a talent of many 😂.

Thank you for your video ^^ We have a (selectively) mute alter. In fact, in the inner world she's mute and express herself through another alter (who understands her silence, don't know if that makes sense...). And in the outside world, she just talks to pretend to be me. And when she's out, it's when there is nobody around. The only reason why she would like to have a voice is to talk with other alters by herself - Lisielle

We are a System. Our body is deaf. Many of us learned to speak and use ASL. Some only sign and some only voice(the hearing alters) The body has a cochlear implant and hearing aid this helped us learn to speak. When using we can hear some. We don’t use it unless we are around people who don’t sign in the outside world. Thank you for this video Roger.

I just realized that my system almost entirely communicates verbally (mental voices) I can see them, but only if they want to be seen and my subconscious knows I won't freak out if there's someone new. We are so not ready for another alter, but I can see my primary protector setting up a table with index cards and pens on it in the middle of the headspace, just in case. Thank you for making us aware of this need

I have been diagnosed with DID for a year now. Ive been aware of it since i was 13. Im 15 now. Around 2018 another alter formed. His name is Otto. He is currently dating my main helper Shadow. They have been dating 7 months now. But Otto is a mute and Shadow has OCD. They are both very good at helping each other feel safe.
Otto is a mute because he was abused as a kid and if he spoke he would get beat. His mother and father left him in rooms without food. So all he knows now is hunger and pain. He used to be anorexic but he is almost fully recovered. He then ran away from home and an old lady took him in. Soon he found the main house. Where most of the alters live. (Many of my alters have past lives in the innerworld.)

Hi! One of my alters has almost the exact same story!!! She is a little and her mom and step father abused her, her step father was a druggy and her mom worked two jobs. They kept her in a closet under the stairs and didn't berly ever feed her. Never any more than scraps. And he would only let her out to beat her or do worse things.... I don't know how we found her but Sarah another alter found her and took her in. The little doesn't talk but Sarah and her share a innerworld psychic bond. Sarah is the only one that can comunicate or interact with her. Our husband can interact in this world, but it took a lot for him to get this far with her and she is still very skiddish.

Gloria is our most known mute alter. She is our most wholesome and kind protector. Some of us say she is made of grace. Once we found out we had DID she sewed her mouth shut to hide what she knows before we could even see she was in the system. We just kept waking up mute or not being able to finish mid conversation until we tried asking who was having issues speaking. Gloria threw so much anger she got her full point across with her mouth still sewn shut. She is calmer now, able to help out with the younger ones again. But still wont take the stitches out of her mouth. I'm hoping once we get friends we can be close with. Gloria will feel safer -Clover

This was interesting. Thank you for sharing, Roger.
We have a doll in our system, named Stitch. Stitch can’t speak because, well, she’s a doll. She can see and hear, though.
One of our selves, Sophia, can process incoming audio faster than anyone else. This lets her censor potentially harmful or triggering information. She claps her hands over our ears and we go temporarily deaf. It’s amazing she can do this! We are glad she rarely uses this ability, though. 😊

Thank you Rodger for this video, it means so much for the community. I have two mute alters (a little and a 16 yrs) as well as a deaf alter Rizza. Rizza is a protector of the disabled alters because she knows sign language and is teaching Jamie and Emmi to the best of her ability. Jamie has low functioning autism and Emmi is 6 but they are still trying to learn but it's still empowering to hear that they aren't alone. Emmi sometimes feels scared because she can't make any noise and writes (she writes like a 8 or 9 yrs) about her voice is dead but Rizza always assures her that she is special and always going to be able to get her point across. Thank you so much and we'd love to learn more about deaf alters too

One of our alters is mute in the innerworld, only talking to some protectors/caretakers and other littles, but when fronting she can take up to 30minutes to an hour before she can start talking (quietly, slowly/slurred and softly, verge of tears sounding) even if we're completely alone
She's so pure, even though she's mute due to trauma, and she's so strong

This video is really cool because we have a youngish alter who goes by "Link". He got his name and basically his identity from the character link, and I don't want to dwell too much on the trauma points but that character basically was our savior as a kid so it makes a lot of sense he's mute. Thank you for helping him feel less alone and out of place! Also on the note of communication, his caretaker or the alter that basically raised him is our primary physical protector, and when Link's out he's ALWAYS in the headspace or co-con so he can jump in and speak for him. I'm not sure if any other system experiences this but that's how they deal with it, at the very least. Anyways great video, cheers :) - Ozzie

We do have one mute alter. Most of the time she isn't fronting in public. We thought she didn't speak at all but there was one time she whispered in a panic. She holds trauma and feels safer not speaking. It is much more comfortable that way. When the body was younger, she had friends who didn't care that she wouldn't speak at all, but into the end of elementary school people wouldn't speak to us and teachers would get frustrated with us and other kids wouldnt include us... So now she doesn't socialize. We have a pretty good understanding relationship with her. She just doesn't trust people very easily.

I don’t have DID. I just have Generalized Anxiety Disorder, I like to say all my life because I don’t know life without it. Especially not understanding these feelings so young, it brought lots of trauma to me physically and mentally from myself and others. I am 18 now and I pretty much have a handle on it but sometimes when my anxiety gets bad, I go mute and I am told by my parents to stop acting like that and I am being a child when I go mute when I am just scared. My kitty Kiora is my biggest help, also seeing the cats in your videos reminded me lol. But thank you for making this video, sometimes my body shuts down and I unselectively go mute and others it just feels safe to me so I selectively go mute. Thank you so much for sharing your story, much love and warm wishes. 😊💕

Felix is our systems gatekeeper, so we think he’s mute for both trauma reasons and because he has access to the vault of memories in the inner world. He’s the only person who has access to every memory so we think his mute-ness could be linked to the fact that it’s his Job to keep these memories secret and safe. (It’s very hard to find a psychologist to help us decipher these things where we live) but Felix is learning sign language so he can externally communicate whenever he fronts, however inside it’s not as necessary since he can communicate telepathically by touching your arm, and jack and I have known him since we were like four so we are at the point where he can give us a look and we know how much trouble we are in 😁😇

!!! This is the first time I've seen someone talk about this. We have a mute alter named Ghost. We originally called him Silence for a long time until he was comfortable giving out a name. We learned some ASL and now that he communicates more we've learned he actually has an amazing personality and is extraordinarily kind. He also hates being touched and doesn't want to gain the ability to talk, as it's just not something that interests him, so he rarely fronts in public, but we don't see it as a negative thing.

I've just recently discovered that I may have DID. I am partially deaf in both my ears and have been pretty much since birth due to neglect during on going ear infections. I know I have several "individuals" that make up me. I believe we are all partially deaf due to the simple fact that it's all we know. And we all share this one body. So... For one of us or more to not be deaf would be odd. We can't hear correctly. Our hearing is likened to being under water and listening thru a tin can to someone out of and above the water talking. It is very garbled and sounds far away if we can hear it at all. Thank you for making this video!

Hey Roger! I am a mute alter. My name is Luna. I let my host know I was around by touching my left hand ring finger. Originally my name was Wife. Our therapist said I could choose a new name and our system host in co-con told him I wanted Luna, so that's my name!
Our system chose a ring to wear on the middle finger. When I'm around, they know because I touch the ring finger and whoever is out says "Hi Luna" and moves the ring to that ring finger. Then we're co-con until I go and the ring goes back to the middle finger.
I am also mute inner world. Other alters feel my presence when I'm around. I'm told I have a soothing effect on people.. So I'm glad I exist. I don't want system-mates to take for granted all that we have with each other and in life as a whole. As soon as I feel conflict pass within a group or personality, I move on to the next one or just wander off from the inner social areas of our inside world for "me time" (usually in the foothill mountains).
I am no longer in danger. We have good people around us in the outer-world, but it is still confusing. For me, it feels like a fishbowl effect. So it's best when I'm not "out" alone :)
I accidentally found your video while opening the new one (today is 12/8/20). Thanks for making it!!!! Have a great day & stay safe (inside and out). See you in your next video! ~ Luna of the Apple System

We have a mute alter. He's a little so we won't be sharing his name but we are currently trying to figure out why he doesn't/can't talk. He communicates mostly through nods and shrugs but can use writing as a form of communication (although it's barely legible). A good way to communicate with selectively mute alters is in the headspace if you can make them feel safe there. We're not too sure if you can talk to fully mute alters in the headspace as we have only one mute alter and he is selective. I've mentioned maybe having him learn ASL so he can communicate easier. Have a nice day/night!

Thank you for sharing your experience!
We're an autistic system, and we have strange experiences with different alters.
We have an alter who can speak and chatters a lot in the Inner World, but he doesn't know how to use the throat when he's out. We've been having luck getting him to sing (after we saw that's a technique of speech therapy), but he doesn't know how to speak with the body yet.
We have four Littles who are mute in the Inner World as well. One of them just doesn't want to talk because she's scared, one of them is angry with everyone and just doesn't want to talk to people, two of them are very young and can't really grasp words, but they're happy and would likely talk if they could.
We also have two alters with hearing impairments. One of them hears a loud ringing sound that drowns out other sounds all of the time, another doesn't seem to be able to proccess sounds sometimes, so he can hear cars down bellow on the streets as if they were right next to him, and sometimes language sounds like gibberish/random noise unless he's really paying hard attention.
(Oh, yes, we also have three alters who are technically mute, but also not humans. Two are computers who manage, simulate and keep/share our memories within the system (one for bad, other for good and neutral), one keeps the InnerWorld running and intact and helps everyone feel comfortable and safe inside, she is also a gatekeeper, manager, communication aid, and a lot of other stuff, and she's a TARDIS, so she doesn't talk and never fronts.)

That must have been about a year ago as we don't really live stream anymore. Whooooah
    My head's so dizzy.
How could I forget theses things 😭 I feel awful.
Myself I agree with what you say. We were very silenced growing up that much I know. Maybe that is why. I don't know I'm so confused rn and Dissociative ugh. One of the littles in our system, Todd, never speaks and when out hides under a blanket and refuses to come out besides peeking through. We honestly have little to no info about him and we're not sure if he can actually talk or if hes selectively mute. One thing we do know is he believes my girlfriend is his mama and she proudly takes the role and is very patient and soft with him :'). We also have, Val, who is completely blind. We're 99% sure hes a trauma holder being that during childhood we would try to hide from seeing horrible things when they were happening. This video was so validating and wonderful. Thank you, Roger for sharing aspects of your story. Ill have to get Todd to watch this and have someone relay the mesaage to Val as well. I'm sure they would greatly appreciate it. Thanks again, many soft hugs (for those ok with them) and hellos from us to you 💙.

    Hello,
I am Z and I am a mute protector of this system. As far as I’m aware I am our only active mute and can hear but can’t speak because of when the body was ill and had the same limits/abilities. I just wanted to come on and say thank you for the video, and ask your advice for going out. I get so worried for if we run into a situation that requires communication and that I’ll get invalidated because of it. Anything helps
    Thanks,
    Z

This was really interesting. I don't have DID but i'm a selective mute. I rarely say more than a word a week if any at all to anyone and apparently thats rare but im able to talk. kind of. I have many issues and i guess i feel safer not letting people in because of past experiences where i've been berated a lot for talking or saying the wrong thing. some of it is from gender dysphoria though. Anyways, it's nice to meet you Rodger :)

I'm in the process of getting diagnosed with did and I so far only really know of two alters. One calls herself Nala (I'm still learning about them I'm still getting over denial 😅) and one of them is mute? Even to us. I'd switch back with new stuff in note books and on my body. How I learned they are actually mute was because they were trying to interact with my mom and play Minecraft with her. They had a hard to speaking to her. My mom said that I was using the notepad app on my phone and sign language to talk to her. I want to know more about them but I'm having a hard time talking to them. This video honestly helped me come to terms with their existence and the fact the are mute.

We have an alter who I believe is selectively mute. He talks to people he trusts, like our mom, but not really anyone else. Not even in the inner world I don't think. We can usually tell what he's thinking by the feelings he sends us when we're co-conscious. I feel bad for all the times he's fronted and had to talk on my behalf.

We have a mute alter named Julian. (TW) they were formed because of an abusive friend/partner who would often yell at us for making any noise, so she feels like she needs to be as quiet as possible. (end of tw) We're not sure if they'll ever be able to speak because they're still currently stuck in that trauma response, but she can type and write (though texting can make them uncomfortable because of other triggers related to that abuser) and she is learning sign language:) -❔

I know my best friend as Rebecca (host), but Becca (co-host) and Darling (protector/not actual name but she won't say it and prefers darling) come out nearly every day. Jeff is genderless but prefers to be called he/him on most occasions and is 4. To make it clear, my friend has DID because she suffered trauma both emotional and physical when a child. Another alter doesn't have a specific name, but she's a mute alter that I nicknamed Silence, with her consent. She came from the punishments Rebecca suffered so when Rebecca is being shouted at or feels threatened it's either Darling or Silence that hosts until they feel safe or they get away from the trigger. I find that Silence prefers classical music and does Rebecca's school work if she finds it but draws in the margins and has a pretty big sweet tooth. If it's Darling hosting then without a better word you're fucked. Darling is loud and shouts and isn't afraid to get violent. The only way to calm her down is with metal music, physical activities like running or to be left alone for a few hours. I will say, when Darling is hosting nothing is boring and she's very sassy. But I'll try showing them your channel because you're amazing, every single one of you, and I think they'll like you a lot ✌🏻❤️

We have an alter who is mute as well, but I don't know if he's ever come out in the outside world or if he finds it difficult. He keeps to himself.
We have an alter who has psychosis and struggles with vision in that sense.
We have one animal alter who isn't blind but has vision problems (double vision) but has mostly recovered from it apart from when he's stressed or on high alert!

Hi Roger! This video was really interesting to me because I think my alter Saturn is selectively mute, but don't know for sure.
Saturn is a pretty weird guy, very extroverted, and in the headspace he's very talkative, but only to me (I'm the host). The thing is when he actually fronts, he barely speaks out loud unless he's trying to get his message across to me while I'm in the headspace, and even then it almost hurts to try and get words out.
We're an OSDD1-b system for reference, so there's no real barriers.
I'm pretty sure it is, but is he selectively mute or just quiet/strange? Sorry if this is a weird question, I'm just not sure if it's Saturn being Saturn or he's selectively mute.

One of mine was mute for the longest time... well, selectively mute. My partner kept being convinced he’d talk, and getting upset at me for saying otherwise. Honestly, he was just terrified of girls.
What ended up helping him was a literal mask, worn on his face. He still can’t talk to most girls - with the exception of like 3 - but he is learning to speak without a mask.

Oh thank you so much for making this video, it was such a comfort to our two mute alters and our two that stutter badly.
We recently had a bad falling out on a support group we run, due to one of our parts typing out her stutters because she can’t get anything out barely at all verbally, and it helps her also think through the words as well, spelling them and completing sentences. No one seems to understand that when we try to explain, and say she is making fun of people who actually do have a stutter.
Your video is full of encouragement.
We do have a Deaf and Mute alter named Jenianne, who has a hearing aid dog in our inner world as well, but who is not an alter itself.
When she fronts, she hears things, but nothing is clear and sounds foreign to her, and she has to rely on trying to read lips, signing, or writing things down.
She’s a loving and kind part and just wishes to help others, she’s also only 10 (we believe that is her age anyways)
We’d love to share anything else that could be helpful with anything else in regards to Deaf Alters! Not sure what exactly to say in reagards to it lol

HEY, other system with a mute alter!!!!!
We have zero idea why I'm mute at all, but I've taken in a co-host role recently along with my other more sensitive responsibilities
I also sound like I'm either being strangled or have been gargling glass when I try to speak no clue why though.
I use Google translate's pronounce button to talk most of the time, most of the people we're close with have accepted it.
