    I appreciate how you zoom in to areas you’re focusing on. I find most beauty gurus are so self conscious that they never do zoom ins cause you might see “flaws” but it makes tutorials so much harder.

    As a retired professional who just can't retire my brushes - both makeup and hair, I applaud your authenticity. It really bothers me when film isn't accurate. I also am a huge fan of the 30's, 40's and Victorian era.

      do you have any ideas how to recreate Sabrina's hair in this video?

    • @twominutetips
      @twominutetips 11 років тому +9

      yellowduck2728 Yes, Its most likely done with styling rats which are very much like bumpits. You can simply take extra hair and wrap it in a hair net. This is what women did all the time during the war. OR if your hair is thick enough you can just roll it into place. Not sure if this is OK but you can check out my youtube channel and I have a video there on how to create a rat.

    I love how you show a real interest in history and its relation to beauty, fashion and cosmetics. It's really interesting to see how all of these looks and techniques developed into the ones we're familiar with today!

      I'd love to take a history class like this and that your grade is based upon how accurate you can replicate the style from the time period while learning how it relates to and shows the way of the times. It would be awesome.

      French aristocracy is not just Marie Antoinette French/18th century as I think you may mean, but covers the whole time of French royalty. So French aristocracy would cover 509-1792

    Your channel is probably the first showing videos with AUTHENTIC retro makeup, eventhough you use modern products. many other videos sell a winged eyeliner and a hair updo as 40s. You're amazing, thank you!

    WW2 was another big factor of makeup and style of the 1940s. Products were rationed and supporting your troops was very important for women after Pearl Harbor. Often using sex appeal to get war donations.

    • @oddeyes9413
      @oddeyes9413 5 років тому +10

      Some parts of Captain America: The First Avenger shows that with his bonds sales montage. Its pretty realistic in the women's sex appeal usage with the line dancing girls.

      That's right! So much so, red lips were seen as a sign of patriotism. Also, apparently Hitler was badly against red lipstick so women would wear it as a result. Lipstick companies would even go so far as to name shades 'Victory Red" or "Montezuma Red"

    I actually learned something with these tutorials, and wanted to thank you! I never could understand that one difference between my Nanna and myself, the fact that she was astonished by my ability to walk out the door without "at least some lipstick". From your 50s video, I learned that her generation was effected by the lack of men, therefore requiring young women to always look their best, fully made up and dressed in order to attract a husband. even if it was to makes quick grocery run. My generation not only had many more choices in terms of lifestyle, marriage, careers, etc, but those choices influenced our priorities greatly. I have a new appreciation for our feminist fore-mothers.

I try not to go places w/out my makeup on, and really love trying out the new colors that come out even season!! Thanks Mom, I love and miss ya!

    Thank you! :) YES! It's amazing what they used in a time period with so much strife! I can only imagine the stories your grandmother must have, wow! My favorite story of that period was when the nylon stockings were hard to get and the women would put makeup on their legs and have a girlfriend draw the seams on the back of their legs with eyeliner to mimic the stockings. Talk about resourceful!

    YES! I'm definitely inspired to continue with this as a series; it's so interesting to see where makeup began and what a taboo it was when it started. For example, in the 1800s prostitutes and actresses were the only ones known to wear heavy makeup so if a woman of society wore it, she had to be discreet and wear as little as possible. They didn't even want to be seen buying it! What a long way we've come!

    It's not the products you use, it's the way you teach. Very helpful and very detailed. I also appreciate the fact that you do an extended research before a vintage makeup video. This is the real professional approach! Already a fan of you!

    Zabrina...here I am again! lol I've only been here 1 minute and 14 seconds and those words you just spoke could have come straight out of MY mouth.!! I feel exactly the same as you about the glamorous 40's but I also love love love the Victorian Era!! My 2 favs also. I loved your other video so much here I am again. And so far I am loving this one,too....OK Now I have finished. And you look absolutely stunning. The knowledge you share about make up over the ages is much appreciated and I would imagine it would set you apart from most of the other channels. But like I said, I don't watch many of these kinds of videos but you do a great job and I enjoy watching . Thanks again~

    THIS TUTORIAL WAS BRILLIANT. You are very detailed, and slow down the entire process enough to both hear and see what steps need to be taken. I am actually a photographer, not a makeup artist, and I had also been trying to research the times so I can properly project them in my next photo project. Thank you for creating and posting this, as I will be using this as my primary go-to when shooting and making sure everything is picture-perfect! This is extremely helpful! Thanks so much!

    Beautiful Zabrena!!! Love the look and hair! :) Like you, I love the times and era's that women were actually feminine! I don't know how you could do a Victorian Era makeup look, because they wore little to no makeup. No eye makeup anyway. Just some powder, what we would call blush, and something to darken the mouth. I don't know if you've seen the movie Water for Elephants, but that would be a very interesting look with 20s hair and makeup. Great job, Zabrena! XOXO

    For the girl with a make-up budget...which 5 eyeshadow colors from Mac, if you had to choose, for a girl with 'our' coloring, would you pick? I have pale skin like yours but my hair is dark brown and my eyes are hazel, a little more on the greener side. I've never purchased Mac products, but would like some place to start...so any 'have to have' ideas on shadows? I'm definitely thinking 'blank type' should be one..but kind of get lost after that.

    I would love to see an little older look like the late 1600s Paris. Paris has always had some very beautiful looks through the centuries. The Eifle tower was being built and it was just an beautiful time. 1700s was more painful with the corsets being made tighter....ouch.

      btw. the construction of the Eiffel Tower began in 1887, and the tower was opened for audience in 1889, not in 1600s.

    Hi Z!!!! I am a new sub, and just adore your channel. I wanted to ask- when I saw this video- if you have tried E.l.f.'s HD soft focus powder. It would be perfect in this look, but I like it all the time. It gives the face this sort of airbrushed gorgeousness that is hard to describe. Soft focus I guess, lol! Anyway, I have recently really fallen in love with E.l.f. as it is now being sold much more widely in my town, and with many new products. I loved the Elf cream blush review you did, it really helped me, so thanks! I always look up reviews before I buy a product because I HATE wasting money on a piece that is just gonna end up in the back of my drawer somewhere for the next two years. lol! But yeah, I guess I just wanted to ask if you could do more E.l.f. products, like a haul maybe? IDK. Thank you sooo much!!! XOXO

    This look is very similar to how a lot of us wore make up in the very late 1980s to mid 1990s I remember. Great tutorial !

    This is perfect! Using this look for a high school band dance today with some finger waves and pin curls. Love it! Except Mary Kay breaks me out, I use clinique for my primer, foundation, and transparent powder. They have a line of foundation specifically for acne prone skin!

    Great tutorial and emphasis on what is historically correct for the time period (which was why I decided to view this).... As a professional cosmetologist and mua, I would recommend applying primer consistently to the entire face for an even foundation application. Also Veil cosmetics makes a great primer called "Golden Hour." Smashbox primers work pretty well too if you are looking to try a new one. Also typically you do the foundation and then the eye makeup, so it was strange to see this in reverse. Also it is VERY important to not SET the makeup with translucent powder until after you have applied ALL face makeup, including blush. Kryolan makes a great professional grade and very affordable loose translucent powder. After 15 years of being a pro, it is hard to not comment on this, sorry if it comes off harsh, but good job overall. Also it would help to focus more on what your application technique is vs. the "name of the shade" as there are so many colors in the rainbow, and it is IMPORTANT to be inclusive for all types and skin tones.
