Finally, an ACTUAL tutorial on the 1940's style victory rolls. I've see a lot of copy cats who think they're doing that style but they actually look more like devil's horns, they use a curling iron instead of curlers, and don't section the hair right. Yours look great!
@@elina437 Lol. Seriously though look up other youtube tutorials and you won't see nice rolls using half the hair on the head. Instead you'll see just the pieces on the top of the head and they put them too far apart. They look like horns.
@@6thgraderfriends Using a modern curling iron to do *most* 40s hairstyles just results in something that looks like it came out of the film Cry Baby. It can be cute, but very rockabilly and I prefer the more authentic stuff!
I totally agree. I have seen so many tutorials on this that at the end they look like they have on a weird cheap wig. I this video did a very good job of making the curls look vintage. I also love that this video is less complicated then most I have seen.
I think a lot of those are rockabilly/pinup style, which is derivative of classic 40s victory rolls, but isn’t meant to look soft or authentically vintage. I prefer the more authentic styles of the 40s, but every once in a while I like to do the rockabilly way. As my friend says “rockabilly is where the punks and goths went when they grew up”, which I think is hilarious, but also insightful. It’s an edgier look. I think it can look very snazzy.
I am new here, and so glad I found your channel. I'm in my 60's and my parents were born in 1921 and 1925. My Dad was in WWII and came home from the war and married my mom. I love that you show all about that time. Thank you so much. My mom wore her hair just like yours in this video.... You are very beautiful.... I will be watching your channel❤️❤️❤️
So adorable! I can just picture you with this fabulous hair style attending to your ill patients in an a pressed white nurses dress! Like you just stepped out of the war! Well done video!
Your victory rolls turned out so well, I think they suit you very much so!! I’ve always struggled with the rolls but you make it look so easy. Also your outfit is gorgeous- especially that cardigan vest 🧶 Another fantastic video, thank you Sage! Hoping you have a fantastic week!
My mother had a similar hair style during the war in old photos.Still have a ship in the bottle from 42 that was gifted to her with a picture of her from the 40s.
This hair style is pretty! If you love reading books , multi-generational and a little bit of history , read Kate Morton The Secret Keeper! It’s so good and the first generation of the people/family they talk about ,is in London during world war 2 and they mention victory rolls and red lips. It’s a really really good book!
Oh Sage this video is so special. I was born in 1944 and as a little girl this is how my mother wore her hair for years. She had brown hair but after a few years she dyed it red like yours for awhile so this brings me so many memories of my mother back in those years. I didn't realize how much I loved that look until I saw you in it. I remember her mother visited us once . (She lived in another state ) and grandma rolled her hair all over. Even the back was rolled. This was in the 50s and I thought her hair was short until I saw that she had rolled it all over even in the back. I watched her do it up and I remember it took a lot of pins. But I loved the one my mother wore it was just like yours.
I am definitely doing this hair for a D-Day festival I'm going to tomorrow! Also, I know this video is a little older but a good tip for anyone using hair spray on curls is to use the can itself to smooth the spray onto the hair rather than your hands as it gives a nice finish and bonus you don't get sticky hands!
@@SageLilleyman thank you so much for creating something new and different every week. Your channel has such a calming influence on me in such a noisy world. 🌹 I can't wait for your beautiful chickens to start their own channel. 🤗

Victory Rolls are the cutest one you! I never do them because I have bangs, but now I kind of want to figure out a way to have victory rolls AND bangs!
Hi Sage. I love the victory rolls. I think it's so cute. I like 30s and 40 hairstyles. They changed alot in that decade. Thank you so much for the video sweetie 😘💞❤
I will try this one day thank you Sage! I’m getting a little better in my pin up hair. I just have thin hair especially on top so it might be harder to try this hair style but I can try! Thank you lovely 😘 ♥️
we seriously need more accounts like yours! i am young but i love the vintage fashion and life style. i am also a fellow australian so if you happen to know shops that sell vintage clothing please tell me. I hope you continue making this type of content! :)
Can you make a video about what you wear to nursing school such as scrubs, hairstyles, and makeup? As a fellow nurse, I love the vintage look but I'm having a hard time portraying it at work. Thank you!!
Years ago, I followed a different tutorial for victory rolls (gosh, probably before UA-cam was around). It did not suggest back combing or curling first and I had so much trouble with my hair slipping. I’ll definitely try again doing it this way!
Your curls look so pretty and 'tidy', even before you do the brush out. I'm still in the 'bushy mess' stage of learning to do pin curls 😆. Can't wait, till my hair is long enough to try real vintage dos.
Sage, when you had your normal hair in the begining you looked so different. But I love your hair with the barrel rolls. And it does look easy. Thank you for sharing this make over. Love your videos.
I loved this video very much but my hair is short and permed so I can't try the hairstyle. Your hair at the end looks beautiful! Thanks for sharing these kind of videos with us.
Excellent video. I can’t do this myself as my hair is so fine and thin it just doesn’t work. I did try it hour in the hope that maybe, just maybe I could get away with it. No such luck. It helps to have thick hair.
Ah, Sage, you make it look so easy! 😍 I'll have to give it a try again someday using your tutorial. Last time I attempted pin curls, I ended up looking like Little Orphan Annie.

So Lovely!! Question, I have LONG naturally curly hair would I still need to per-set my hair the night before & do you have a special hair cut/style to get this look?
you could do the victory rolls though I'm not 100% sure how the back would turn out. I don't have naturally curly hair so I don't really know how/if a brushout would work on hair that's naturally curly. you'll have to experiment. Another option would be to do a Gibson roll in the back to achieve a similar look if the brush out doesn't work the way you want.
