Unlike other makeup gurus who do period looks, yours are ACTUALLY historically accurate. These looks aren't slightly tweaked to current standards but look exactly they way they did in that decade!!! How fascinating and fantastic!
Jebjess What are you talking about? We did not use eyebrow pencil, false eyelashes, smudge our liner, or eye use lid "foundation". She looks very close with the wig, but her makeup has been 2000s tweaked all over the place.
If I'm correct...Natural looks were more common in the 70s? I had a book that had makeup ideas (from 1977) and from what I recall, the looks were more simple, and neutral colors were usually worn during the day.
I think she is just saying that the person could have been her daughter not saying that she is. If her dad talked to her and if they dated and 'stuff'. Not that she could be, that she could have been. There's a difference.
+Lola Blake its still not how it works, this girl was made by her mother and father. If her father had married this woman, the genes and everything would be different, and it would be impossible for "jesmagi" to exist
As someone who graduated HS in 1978 in Northern Calif, I must say you nailed it. I don't remember the average girl looking quite as polished but all the trends you mentioned definitely trickled down & were represented. There was also a big 50s nostalgia thing happening in the 70s. Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley were big hits then. Leave It Beaver & The Patty Duke Show, etc, were in constant reruns. Probably in response to all the social upheaval of late 60s...

And the main thing to do the stevie nicks look is growing your hair. It wasn't a problem for me because I had long hair since I was a kid coz my dad never let me have it shorter than my waist but if you got short or shoulder length hair extensions are a must , she always had extensions in the 80s. Back in the 70s her hair was more natural as was her makeup she used similar look to the one done here but with kohl in her waterline and smudged a bit . Nobody I knew used liquid liner we all used kohl some of my more trendy mates used electric blue kohl and mascara to match . I stuck to black because I was a rock chick I played bass in a group too. I went to high school in the mid-to-late 70's and this "nature girl" look was referred to as Blow Dry. Probably because the hair required a lot of blowing out to get that much volume. It was very popular, especially the glossy lip (which is why we all carried those Lip Smackers in our bags). This was a fun video.
I started wearing makeup in about 1975-76. Used a lot of shimmery pink and blue eye shadows, shimmery pink lipstick and lip gloss! & I had the Farrah hair cut too.
You dotted really into the 70's here :-) I started to wear make me 1972 to the school and it was very popular to have bushy eyelashes. Must say that you are incredibly talented and well-read. Looking forward to your videos all you do. Wish you all the best, I'm from Sweden
You should do a parody video where you're some year in the future looking back on "historically accurate trends" of 2013/2014 and kind of dabble in the more hilarious and over-done things (yet the things that can make you look 100 times better if done correctly) like the triangle of concealer or popular items like Mac's Candy Yum Yum, Anastasia DipBrow, and the Naked Palette craze. Just may be a cute way to also do a year in review..... clearly I don't know what made me think of that... maybe I'm losing my mind lol
Zabrena you've done a great job once again. I would say though that this "look" you've created is probably closer to Farrah's fellow '70s Angels Cheryl Ladd and Jaclyn Smith. Farrah's look was slightly more vivid; stronger blush, the lower lashes almost fully lined, and darker eye shadow, though in exactly the same design as you depict. But your research and attention to period detail are spot on.
I know that makeup was not very used in the 1910s but it was the very start of it. I would like like a video showing the historical facts about it and maybe a very basic makeup look. Some actresses did use makeup in that era. The Edwardian era is my favorite, so I'd love to see what you'd have to day about it. Thank you ! xxx
Veronique Auguste Ladies from late 1790s to 1830, revealing the popularity of very pale complexions with rosy cheeks, somewhat red lips, and perhaps a bit of eye-liner. The most ostentatious adornment in these portraits is a pearl necklace.
Me, too! TV shows like "ANZAC Girls" and "The Crimson Field" got me interested in that decade. I'm sure the Suffragette Movement in Europe affected some of the fashion and hairstyles...also the shortages during WW1. I'd be interested to see what their makeup and beauty regimens were! Thanks, Zabrena, for all these cool videos!!!! :)
Rose A We were actually told that it was good for us! I wasn’t into lying around on the beach getting a suntan and would rather spend my time in the woods hiking or exploring caves. My mother would get so mad because she said my untamed skin was “unhealthy”!
Ha! I thought you were referring to Donna Summers. I thought htis was one of the most flattering looks you've done on yourself so far, btw. Loved as always!
I'm really seeing Olivia Newton-John here, especially in the shot where you're all done, you've just gotten the wig on, and you're smiling at the camera. I was transported back to "Grease". Love it! So glowy, such a nice thing to see in chilly winter. :)
Yessss I LOVE this makeup look. So young, fresh, and flattering. The '70s is by far my favorite decade and I would love to see more historically accurate '70s makeup videos!
In the 70's my older sister and her friends would spend all summer tanning with baby oil mixed with iodine. If they did use tanning lotion, it was always without sunscreen. Can you imagine?! They all roasted until well done! lol
Great job! I absolutely adored the 70's, the music, the hair, etc. I was too young to really appreciate them at the time, but as time has passed, I find it's a decade that I really miss.
could you do a historically accurate hippie makeup tutorial? I've been trying to find one for a while, but I can't seem to find any, and I love your videos!
Correct! I"m from that generation! Only hippie wannabes wore makeup back then. They couldn't handle not showering, washing their hair and dirty clothes of the real hippies. I don't think people realize that most hippies rebelled against the establishment with a lack of personal hygiene among other things.
I've come across your channel quite by accident but I'm LOVING your historically accurate makeup videos. So if you see a spike in your viewings, it's just me watching all of them over and over again.
i have a neighbor who is kind of stuck in that era of make up, and every time i see her she went full glam with a bright blue eyeshadow that ends right under her eyebrows....
FANTASTIC job!!! You musta been sweating bullets with that giant condom cap under your wig. I remember my aunt was sent home from school for getting in a fight with a girl who stole her Dr. Pepper flavored lipgloss. Who can blame her, it was her favorite! haaaa
you should do cultural makeup looks, go for indian, pakistani arabic and east asian looks etc. i love how you spend time on research as well it is so important
It's cool that you include the time stamp to skip to the tutorial for those who just want that but I actually love that you include the little background information tid bits!
I've been waiting for your 70s look! Because so few people have done it, and although I was born after the 70s there's something about the vibe, beauty industry, and and fashion that's gets me to this day.
i love the background information you did and that you put the time to skip to. because most of the time people put it as an annotation but that doesnt work for mobile devices. I love the research you do and the way you present it :)
Hi! I just found your "historically accurate" videos. AMAZING!!!!! I love how you give historical details and the pop ups are great! I have never seen anything like these videos on UA-cam before...you are very unique and beautiful. Love, love, love these historical videos.....hoping you make more :) You have a new subscriber :) p.s....I grew up in the later part of the 70s and early 80s ...Those videos are on point ♡
Beautiful! This look was absolutely perfect. I appreciate your historical tutorials so much because you include a thorough world view with them. Seeing what everyday life was like by looking at what our styles were is such a marvelous way to climb inside of history. Next, personally I would LOVE to see the 30s!
Love this tutorial made me go back because even though I was a child I do remember quite a bit about the time. I don't really know how 2 put the fact the u mentioned icons of the past that some r still seen today like Cher... but I remember in my house and my friends house while growing up the wigs we very in if u did not own a wig u were as they called it back then square.. the lips were lots of lip gloss line thin as u said brows like in the 30's big hair and lots of hair spray or even layers. the double belts satin tight pants and clogs... wow I just loved it as I said I was a child but enjoyed looking at the people and wanting 2 grow up fast 2 b just like then... thanks 4 this tutorial good memories from the past!!!
OMG lets go to Studio 54!! (and sweetie I know all the dances!) The big boggie down perfumes of the decade were Tea Rose by Perfumer's Workshop (the discos were reeking of that one! A real un-natural rose) Diva by Van Cleef & Arpels, Opium, Chanel No.19, Ivorie de Balman by Pierre Balman, Dioressence by Dior and of course, Charlie by Revlon... just to name a very few from the classics of the era You really nailed it ... Like a time trip back to Buzby's, Trocadero Tansfer The IBeam and Dreamland....and Studio 54. Fabulous!!
Whoo hoooo! I bet you know all the dances!! Ahhh, I just love how you listed the fragrances in with this decade! Thank you, dahling! I knew you'd love it!
Only you could make the 70's look attractive!! Believe you me, it was an ugly era fashion wise and socially, as well!! Thanks for your great tutorials!!
This has to be my favorite of all, probably b/c I grew up in the 70's, this is exactly how I used to wear my makeup in high school, or lack of it, totally natural and looking like no makeup at all! Love it! xoxo
I love your historically accurate videos! The 30's or the 50's, awe heck, please do both!!! I absolutely love the looks you do, your videos are amazing!
Thanks so much for your videos. I remember some of these things about the 1970's, from what they showed on t.v. , magazines, my mother's makeup and what I started wearing as a teen. I loved the Bonnie Bell lip smackers they were ALL big in so many flavors. When you look at the makeup of Charlie's Angels, the shine and shimmer in the eyeshadows and stick blush too!!
I LOVE LOVE this look, very natural and wearable for every day. I used to be a big fun of Farrah Fawcett to the point that i wanted to be a Charlie's Angel ; a far away dream!! Excellent tutorial and please keep doing more historically decades, there are really informatives. And you are very talented and pretty too!!!
Love the 'time traveling' videos Z! I'd love to see more looks from the 70's. I think that hairstyle was called 'the Farrah'. It was a big hair fashion fad back then. I much prefer your beautiful locks of auburn hair. I appreciate all your efforts to bring us this series.
Thank you, Deb! :) We definitely need to revisit this era in the future! The great thing about this series is we can go back to all these eras, so many different looks to choose from! :D
You have successfully created an authentic 70s look. You look absolutely stunning! Great job! Nice tutorial... Unlike modern makeup, 70s makeup was more soft, feminine, simple yet chic and elegant!
I love these through back make-up looks. I was small kid in the 70s and I totally loved Farrah. I really enjoy your history lesson and pics of ads from back them. I actually remember them from my mom's magazines. Thanks again, this would be a great look for the summer!
It's always a bit eerie but always beautiful seeing the full costume fall into place, you always pull it off so well I've learned alot from you thank you
AS someone who was a teenager in the 1970s, the natural look was used in the daytime pretty much throughout the decade. Most of us didn't use powder or foundation. Indian earth was big as a bronzer or rouge to add color for people with a light tan. Glosses were usually worn without lipsticks. You're right that eyebrows weren't usually done unless the brows were really thin. You did the eyeliner well on both lids. Pearlized and soft shimmer eyeshadows, especially in greys, lavenders, greens, and browns, were big for teenagers for fancy occasions. We tended not to use more than one color in the early 1970s unless we were doing a theatrical makeup for some reason. Again, I'm speaking as a teen, not a model or career woman. This was the colored mascara time, too, usually without eyeshadow. The bright, dark, and highly shimmered shadows were definitely more disco era -- late 76 for those of us who weren't in NYC -- and later. The more garish colors are later in the 1970s as we transitioned into the more electric tones of the 1980s. Red lipsticks were available, but again, not really used for college age and younger until very late 1970s.
Going to a 70's fancy dress party soon so needed to remind myself of makeup styles, already got the wig and bell bottom trousers, just working on the rest so this video helped to complete the look
I do theatre and of course that means shows from many different time periods and your tutorials are amazing at helping me achieve era specific looks. Thank you so much! Maybe a 30's look next?
you deserve more subscribers ze! you're the most organized and detailed beauty youtuber ever. I love how you always put efforts on this series. I notice that in every video you write some kind of script, I see it as a way for you to keep the information accurate. Love it so much! Sending you hugs and kisses. Have a nice day :)
Wonderful tutorial! I love all the info you give at the beginning, it really sets your videos apart from almost everyone on UA-cam! Also, you REALLY pull off that blonde hair! But your natural hair is just as gorgeous :)
omg, my era haha, I remember blue eyeshadow was very popular also but only on the lids, hardly anyone put eyeshadow on the crease back then. We sure have come a long way.
Unlike other makeup gurus who do period looks, yours are ACTUALLY historically accurate. These looks aren't slightly tweaked to current standards but look exactly they way they did in that decade!!! How fascinating and fantastic!

I’m a hair younger but I remember the bronzed beauties Christopher Atkins and Brooke shields from the blue lagoon lol had the poster on my wall 😂
she looks sorta like Laurie from that 70s show
Salma Diaz yes
Laurie was the QUEEN of hair in that show!
That’s what I was thinking lol
I believe she is deceased now unfortunately. I always thought she, Red, and Kitty were the best characters of the show.
I thought you meant Laurie from Halloween
I was alive in the 70s. Flavored gloss was VERY popular.
I'm from 2000 so compared to you I'm a baby but even I get shivers when I think about the flavoured lipbalms I had that had this weird coco cola taste and smell😂
I agree. It was HUGE. BonneBell and LipSmackers Roll on glass
Well Bonnie bell began in 67 but I don’t remember flavored glosses being popular until the late 70s and early 80s

I have been watching your videos and I honestly think this is one of your best looks. Very simple and sophisticated, and also very flattering.
Obsessed with this look/time period
A real un-natural rose) Diva by Van Cleef & Arpels, Opium, Chanel No.19, Ivorie de Balman by Pierre Balman, Dioressence by Dior and of course, Charlie by Revlon... just to name a very few from the classics of the era
You really nailed it ...
Thank YOU! So maybe the next Historically Accurate make up you do I will come up with the perfumes from that era! Sounds like fun!
Wow this is cool :o
Only you could make the 70's look attractive!! Believe you me, it was an ugly era fashion wise and socially, as well!! Thanks for your great tutorials!!
Let's not forget Halston
This has to be my favorite of all, probably b/c I grew up in the 70's, this is exactly how I used to wear my makeup in high school, or lack of it, totally natural and looking like no makeup at all! Love it! xoxo
Can you do a hippie /boho inspired make up look from the 60s/70s
Aah, Seventies chick here...stayin' alive! Thanks for posting :)
I love your historically accurate videos! The 30's or the 50's, awe heck, please do both!!! I absolutely love the looks you do, your videos are amazing!
I was a teenager in the '70's. You nailed it! I actually prefer this natural look to today's way over made up look. Natural and healthy is the best!
I seriously love how you give a little history lesson in these videos, so interesting
That was great, you look beautiful! I was a teen in the 70s and I remember this well, and I still love to see it.
I LOVE LOVE this look, very natural and wearable for every day. I used to be a big fun of Farrah Fawcett to the point that i wanted to be a Charlie's Angel ; a far away dream!!
Excellent tutorial and please keep doing more historically decades, there are really informatives. And you are very talented and pretty too!!!
this looks so healthy and lovely!! I've been watching a ton of these and i love the history you sew into your narrative :)))
Love it Z! You are so much fun! I really enjoyed the history and info of the makeup too!
Sandra
"Shroom" seems extremely appropriate for the 70s haha
You have definitely captured the 70's look. All you need is a jumpsuit, platform shoes and a disco.
Okay and now that I have seen this video love the fact that you mentioned Stevie and Cher My Idols, Id love to see your take know Stevie's makeup
That makeup and style look is so spot on! This is how my mom looks in all of the pictures of her from the 70s hahah
I love these through back make-up looks. I was small kid in the 70s and I totally loved Farrah. I really enjoy your history lesson and pics of ads from back them. I actually remember them from my mom's magazines. Thanks again, this would be a great look for the summer!
One of my fave makeup series's on youtube, ever! I love how much research you put into it :)
This was SPOT ON! Brilliant and you look absolutely amazing Z! Very beautiful, love you blonde too! Austin Power's babyyyyyy!!!!
Thank you, babe! :D Yeah baayyybayyyy! ;) xoxoxoxo!
It's always a bit eerie but always beautiful seeing the full costume fall into place, you always pull it off so well I've learned alot from you thank you
Still waiting for the 1950s
I need this for when I go through my 70s phase, every month it changes!!! xD
I love this look on you, I love your historically accurate looks so much!
I really enjoyed this trip back to the 70s!! I Feel extremely lucky to be able to have the star to watch it with!!! LOVE THIS VIDEO!! #FAVORITE
Awwwww! Love you, doll! :D
Xo love you too! Great video!
It’s not really the makeup- but your face shape and facial features that make it work so well
In 2019 I realize my makeup aesthetic is the 70s.
You captured the seventies perfectly!! Love your time travel tutorials!! 😮👏🏼💗✨✨✨
The late 40's. I want to know what was fashionable in my Mom's prime. I love when you do these with info about the era.
You are so knowledgeable about this.. its not just a tutorial its a class.. I love it!
Your intro made me laugh so hard!! Nice tutorial :)
This is my absolute favorite makeup look. I like a bit deeper lip myself, but the skin…that is lovely.
Wow! This video is almost 10 years old. Great job! I was a preteen in the 70’s so I didn’t wear makeup but my mom was all about the disco look.
you deserve more subscribers ze! you're the most organized and detailed beauty youtuber ever. I love how you always put efforts on this series. I notice that in every video you write some kind of script, I see it as a way for you to keep the information accurate. Love it so much! Sending you hugs and kisses. Have a nice day :)
I like this makeup look. It's natural and understated. Love it!
loved it! I really loved the tip for the lashes to use individual lashes, which for a while I forgot existed
Thank you so much for doing a 70s era, reminds me so much of my Mother she looked so much like Farrah! You look gorgeous as well!!
Wonderful tutorial! I love all the info you give at the beginning, it really sets your videos apart from almost everyone on UA-cam! Also, you REALLY pull off that blonde hair! But your natural hair is just as gorgeous :)
Great video ! Would love to see the other two makeup looks of the 70's!!
omg, my era haha, I remember blue eyeshadow was very popular also but only on the lids, hardly anyone put eyeshadow on the crease back then. We sure have come a long way.
