- Went over to Norfolk again yesterday because It will be a very sad day for fans of the class 37 loco when they finish on passenger work in this part of the country.
The one loco had changed from my last visit in February, today locos were 37407 & 37423
The sheer range of sounds at 8 mins. Growl, roar, cackle, whistle and everything else imaginable.😊
Wish we still had them working to film, thanks for finding this video.
There is so much *character* in this and similar videos - even when it doesn't automatically look like there is anything particularly 'special' about them on the surface. Just imagine the lack of this and similar, and it becomes much more obvious. All of this, however mundane it might appear to be, is very precious!
Great video. I still remember D6700 and D6701 being driven though Newport (Essex) within a couple of days of each other as brand new locos for delivery to Stratford (30A)
God that was a long time ago, thanks for your comment and for taking a look at my video.
Excellent sights and sounds in this great video. Looking forward to going over there myself in a few weeks time.
Me to for a nice cheap breakfast lol.
Great video thanks. It's incredible that the Class 37s are still doing good service.
It just shows what a good loco they are, cheers for your comment.
Great video nice to see a pair of 37’s even if they are only pulling a rake of 3 coaches thanks for sharing👍
Cheers mate for watching my video, I do like your YT name, as I like to film that class also.
Fantastic sounds from those class 37s Mike and some very nice filming. Good to see a few manually operated level crossings still in existence around the UK. Cheers - Allan.
Thank you Allan your comment is very much appreciated, there are going to be big changes on this line during this year so I am filming the signals crossing gates when I can. Cheers Mike.
My favourite diesel loco. Nothing else comes close. The sound, the look, the power, a marvellous locomotive.
I second everything you said. thanks for watching.
Wonderful sounds and images. Thanks for sharing.
I'm pleased so many people like yourself have enjoyed my video mate.
BEAST OFF A TRAIN THIS ONE ,SUCH POWER .GREAT LOOKING AND SOUNDING LOCCOS
Great true comment mate. Thanks.
Global warming ? What a joke, chugging smokey trains, and your gov. talks elsewhere! Don't get me wrong,i love these machines,i'm just being cynical, after all,how does this work on a spinning ball? I ain't trollng,i just seek the truth in my mid 50's,and i do not want to offend............kawasakipete
My favourite diesels - and very well filmed. Some nice camera and sound recording.
That's very nice of you to say that Geoffrey, and thank you for watching. Regards Mike.
Love the old Class 37's, nice locations too,Lingwood and Brundal etc. Thankyou for reviving my memories until I return there to visit family in May.
PS always a little breezy in Norfolk. :) Try Acle,Cantley and Reedham when you return...
Thank you very much for watching my video, I have over the years been to nearly every place along them lines.
Perhaps it's the Norfolk beans😂
Some wicked sounds onboard the train❤
Oh yes Peter they were fantastic times.
Great looking locomotive shots nice train ride video beautiful trains nice location
Thanks for keeping a interest in my videos, its a nice part of the UK to visit.
Lovely stuff Mike, even in the wind and juggling ticket checks! Must get over there myself soon to capture them again before they finish - I'd heard May timetable change, but still no sign of any FLIRTS entering service soon.........
I'm keeping my finger crossed they get lost on there journey to NR, thanks for your comment Darren.
I always loved the depth of sound these loco's produced. And as a kid staying at my Grandmothers house (not far from a rail track) I always knew it was a 37 thundering through in the early hours. In fact, you could here these trains from miles away. They should still use them today I reckon!
I totally agree with your great comment John. Cheers Mike.
Believe it or not..
I lived my childhood between Upton Park and East Ham, a bit of distance SOUTH of the LTS line and on hot summer nights with sash window fully open to the east one particular night/morning I could hear a cl 37 going up and over the Barking flyover then along the viaduct towards Gospel Oak, for about 10mins!
I could usually hear the daily cl 31 or 37 shunting in Grangewood goods yard in daytime despite all the ambient sounds but the above was the ultimate sound bite.
Love the old manual crossing gates....magic....
I'm pleased we still have a few around the country Richard.
We have one still at Eggington Junction, South Derbyshire
@Grassy Ranks it’s a nice little line :)
mmm always windy near the coast especially the east coast in winter great vid though some great 37 thrash loved it thanks for sharing syd
I do like this class of loco Syd, and I will be making as many visits to that area when I can. Regards Mike.
great stuff look forward to that thanks Mike regards Syd
Great to have this record. There seems to be quite a bit of jointed and bull head track too - an increasing rarity on passenger lines.
That's good of you to watch my video John, Thank you Mike.
Love these engines, I use this line as often as I can just to see them.
That's great Paul, I was planning to go this Friday but the line is closed so I'm disappointed. But thank you for watching my video. Regards Mike.
Great video Mike, and as you say very sad.
Yes It will be when it happens. and it will happen this year David, thank you for your continued interest in my videos. Mike.
Excellent video Mike, My guess is they will last until about Christmas . Then I suppose they will have to move over for the new units
That's what I think Anthony and I hope we are right. Regards Mike.
Nice filming, good ole 37's!
Cheers Gaz, not seen you for ages.
Well filmed Mike......Lovely Noise......Trevor.''
Thanks very much Trevor.
I know its to be expected when you have 3500Hp, only 3 coaches, and a keen driver, but that acceleration still looks stunning
I agree its great stuff, thanks for your interest in this video.
Its beautiful lol
It's about TORQUE,pulling power,BHP is top end speed,Torque is bottom end grunt, which is what these motors(DC Series) are all about, the unique thing is that these motors will run to destruction if not on load, because they have no 'TORQUE CURVE,' it's pure destrucion 4 years electrical training college apprentiship........35 Years a BIKER (technology has changed to AC now,but TRACTION is what these beasts are about, and it was always DC motors years ago)TORQUE.....That is what a V TWIN engin has over an IN LINE 4 CYLINDER TRAVERSE engine...they pull away quicker, but the 4 cylinder has the top end advantage of HORSEPOWER,it's a trade off
@@peterkwakman7440
Parts of what you say are correct, though not relevant in this type of application. I'm afraid the torque power myth was instigated by Harley Davidson long ago to sell agricultural tech engines. What's actually going on is that larger cylinders like in a HD produce more low down torque that makes them more rideable with more available throttle response at low speed. However it is actually power that makes acceleration, it's physics not speculation. The easiest way to understand this is to take it to the extreme. A man with a long enough scaffold pole slid over a wrench can produce a higher torque than any HD or even locomotive engine...if the wrench extension was sufficiently long. However there is no way that same man could develop the same acceleration, because his speed would be ridiculously slow.
Another way to understand why torque is only part of the equation, is thinking about the gearbox in a vehicle, which is in effect a torque multiplier.
You want higher drive torque, you change down. You want higher speed, you change up. It all fits into the basic equations:
Power = Torque x speed.
Acceleration = power / weight
As for the loco, yes you are right this will have DC traction motors. And the (basic) laws of physics for a DC motor give: max torque at start, reducing as the rpm increases to zero torque at max speed (theoretical as these large motors as you say would break up with no load). Though in practice the characteristics are modified as speed is increased as these have separately excited and controlled field coils (not blind shunt wound as per smaller machines). An added problem is that of the risk of flash over caused by driving the traction motors too hard at slow speeds. This is why tractive effort is not quoted at start up, and why most locos can't just be slammed into notch 7 from standstill without risk of damage.
However the generator / motor drive of the loco is mainly to allow large start up forces without an inefficient mechanical clutch, plus the engine is able to run at it's max power (max rpm) through most of its speed range. This Is why torque curve of the engine doesn't have significance....most of the time during acceleration the locos engine is running at the same rpm anyway.
In the UK there were several older classes of diesel loco that used hydraulic transmission. These were able to accelerate much harder from a stand still because there wasn't the same risk of traction motor damage.
I have tapped this on my phone so I'm sure my explanations aren't the clearest but hopefully it helps you get the idea.
@@gs425 You put it much more elegantly than he deserved
Fun video. I bet you enjoyed making it. Those locos are brutes!
Oh yes Thomas anything to do with this class is good stuff.
Superb shots 👍🏻
Cheers Irelandbloke, I appreciate you watching our UK trains and my video.
You're welcome :)
the bridge at beighton must be a good place to catch them from when they are on the yarmouth line
Thanks Adam, when I come over in the car I will check that bridge out, I've been to the one before that in the past. Thanks for watching my video which is very much appreciated.
These locos need to be preserved!
Its a bit to early for these at the moment but there are some preserved on some railways around the country.
Excellent video 👍
Cheers Michael, and thanks for taking a look.
They are still doing passenger service's, I saw them on the line last Saturday. ( Saturday 16th March 2019. )
Great stuff they are booked for Saturdays but sometimes don't run.
Great video.
Well these days were great Josh.
They are the equivalent of late Victorian locomotives still running in the 1950s.
Well yes you are right, thanks for taking a look.
though that wasn't even so rare, even in the 60s it was not so uncommon for stuff that old to still be running.
cough cough Midland Railway 1377 class...
not long left indeed, but I have heard they are all but certain to be extended in to the summer timetable 'for a short while'.
I don't think they will have the new units for May, so yes I hope its extended.
one of the best sounds on the line.....
Brilliant I think mate.
Plenty of Analogue signals along the line there too for added nostalgia
That's right and they are going too Chris in the next twelve months
That's a bit of a shame, even if main signals were there for safety some nostalgia left would look great.
You may have been there recording the last fling of the 37's - just a matter of time really ..... not to mention a staffed level crossing and semaphore signals. Sad though it may be to see them go :(
I have also been filming the old signals and crossing for a video later in the year Brian. When It does happen sometime in the coming months Its a area I probably will not visit again. Regards Mike.
That's great Mike - I look forward to seeing it :) Cheers, Brian
Ok, I know they're not hauling freight here but they don't half get going quick and look like they stop on a dime! Impressive stuff.
For there age they are a great loco that's why they have been kept running for the last fifty years, and I hope for a few more years to come. Thanks for watching.
They were running one class 37 on the North Norfolk Railway past Kelling Heath yesterday..( April 19th )...I stopped at Kelling halt to watch it go past.
That's brilliant William, they used to have a Diesel gala on the NYMR but don't anymore. Thanks for watching my video, and there will be a new one uploaded from this line on Easter Monday.
@@antman09ful1 You are most welcome, and thank you for posting such wonderful videos.
Sounds amazing 😉
They have a great sound for me that's why I travel many miles to film them.
Superb video
Cheers Stephen.
Class 37s music to my ears.
Me too Paul, the sound they make is like a great guitar solo to me, thank you for your interest in this video. Regards Mike.
Apparently 37716 has gone to Norwich to be used on the set, could be the last ever no-heat 37 to be used on a service train.
Cheers Owen I didn't realise that loco had gone back to Norwich end of last week.
hotrod on rails ,awsome exhaust sound &heaps of power
Thanks for watching, very pleased you enjoyed the video as much as I did filming it.
Im suprised there still used although it is good to see them still
They are such great locos.
They are set to go and of MY at the timetable change a bimodal will cover the morning and afternoon diagrams, so catch them while you can .
Thanks Steve for the heads up. Regards Mike.
I, for one, will miss the 37s going through Lingwood because of the distinctive sound and the thrash they make. Passenger numbers on the Wherry Lines have increased because of national interest in the 37s, and of course when the 68s were running here for a while. We will miss the old gates when they are gone and automatic barriers are installed, it's just a way of life around here.
I bet you will Paul and as you say things will not be the same when them new plastic thing come on line, I have to thank you for watching my video, and for your input how you feel about progress on that Wherry line. All the best Mike.
I didn't know there were any 37s left. They would have been a much more suitable vehicle for the West Highland sleeper service than the risible 73 rebuilds, which still look like a shed on wheels.
According to Wikipedia there are still 67 of those units in service.
Yes them were great days when the class 37 were all over Scotland on all types of service, but them day will never come back, regarding the 67s up in Scotland they are getting rare.
Second home from London, remember Norfolk is by 'THE WASH',East wind, love your footage,i grew up near Kings X,i remember me dad taking me to see the trains from Caledonion Road when you could in the mid 60's
Thanks for watching my video Peter.
yes Miker times are changing.. catch em' while you can.
I will Keith, back again with my son soon.
Great video - not being familiar with the area, which line was you filming? I see diagrams to Gt Yarmouth and Lowestoft are on the lists - coming over in a few weeks to see them for the first and probably last time.
This video Kyle covers both lines, I will be filming in this area again in two weeks.
what a beast
Yes they were a great sight when they worked this line. Thanks for watching.
Nice video, well filmed and edited. Definitely overkill, two Class 37s powering a 3 coach train.
Cheers Rod for watching my video.
Might not have loco run around facilities.
Sounds which are slowly disappearing, like the sound of the Viscount aircraft that would fly over my home every night at midnight.
Yes I like your comment, I flew on a Viscounr only I wonder if one was preserved as there will be lots of 37s preserved. Thank you for watching.
I did not know there were and class 37's still in active service. I have spotted the odd one in sidings over the years but guessed they were on yard duties or even being moved between heritage railways! Good to see the old girls doing what they were built for. Are there any class 55's still in service? Would enjoy seeing one at work.
Thanks for watching the video, there are many class 37s operating around the country, but only a few class 55 from preserved railways.
Does anyone know the whereabouts of 37510? Supposedly it was bought by europhoenix from drs a few years ago and refurbished, but I can't find any pictures or videos!
Thanks for watching my video Chris, sorry I can't help you with 37510
Don’t know what camera you’re using but Boucle Sock does the trick! I normally use a black one but you can use any colour you like as they work wonders at deadening the sound
Thanks for watching and your info.
antman09ful1 Like many others I just love the sound of the 37's Im a 37 Nut
Great video ,but one has to ask how cost effective is it having a pair of 37's top and tail on three coaches compared to a 153 doodlebug ?
They have to proved a service so money doesn't come into it mate, thank you very much for watching my video.
Two Loco's because the train goes two ways.... Need one at the front both times
just love that sound ,why two locos .
Might not have loco run around facilities..
They have run round facilities but the service would lose to much time lads.
Nice to see some some of the old traction still working service trains ! Be interested to know what line this is on . Good vid 👍
Norwich to Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth
Hidden user 5705 Thanks.
Yes its what they call The Wherry Line.
Two locos and three carriages, could be overkill.
No
Oh no always great to have them class 37 on passenger services.
It is always windy in Norfolk, because it is Norfolk. In the old Norse language, 'Nor'flok' translates as "Bloody hell Sven, it 'aint half windy mate." True fact.
Thanks for your interesting comment Billy, and for watching my video.
I remember seeing you there at Lingwood 2min 32sec in. Was the thrash ok?
Well it was more 2mins 47sec Steven but you got it right that is what makes a class 37 different to there locos. Thanks again Steven for taking a interest in this video from the area you live in ?.
And the Government has the audacity to tell us our modern fuel efficient cars are dirty!
Was just thinking the same thing. The ironic thing is that they're operated by DRS who exist to serve nuclear power.
Yes you are both right, but I still like to film them as they are a great loco which can go anywhere on the network. Thank you both for watching.
But I thought East Anglian Class 37 haulage ceased in January 2019?
No they are saying May 2019 but I hope it will be extended, thank you for taking a look.
good vid
Cheers mate.
your welcome
What service / line are these 37's on? I would love to go and have a last look. My personal faves were the class 45's that I used to see at Cricklewood. "CW" had an allocation. - Sorry this video about 37's, not Peaks!
Norwich to Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth.
They were fantastic days when all the service on the MML were peaks and you could walk round CW depot, but thank you for your interest in my video.
As much as i love seeing 37's any chance of getting some "sheds"?
There are hundreds of video on my channel with Sheds working freight trains Lee.
naeive question, how do they control both the locos?
It is wired through the coaches. Thanks for your interest.
So topping and tailing is easier than running round at Yarmouth and Norwich?
Yes it is mate.
Excuse the ignorance. When they are top and tailed, are both locos under power controlled from front engine, or is rear free wheeling. Presumably this train is top/tailed as no opportunity to run around at destinations. These old beauties must be able to haul 10x that load.
Both engines are being used on these trains mate, and they don't run round because there is not enough time to do that. Thank you for watching my video.
They can definetly shift that's for sure
To right they can with this short set. thanks for watching.
Not that I'm a train buff but do love the sound of these.what line is this?where could I catch this?I'm near Ipswich?
Norwich to Great Yarmouth mate.
That should read May!
I thought that Steve.
I'd be amazed if the ticket revenue covered the fuel and hire costs of these trains.
Well they have made a lot of extra money over the years with enthusiast wanting to travel on these trains, and that's going to end.
@@antman09ful1
I wonder how much though.
I've travelled on these inadvertently a number of times but annoyingly, most of the times I've travelled, I've ended up on that single-carriage thing only for the 37's to be going the other way !!
That's is bad luck, but I've has some too has I booked a Travelodge months ago for this Friday, we checked with the railway company and National rail to see if the line was going to be open, and all was OK.Then last week we found the line is closed all the week. So that's the three hotel rooms money wasted.
12 traction motors for 3 carriages. No wonder if accelerated like that
Great days wasn't they Paul.
Always wondered why two locomotives with so few coaches?
Dave thanks for watching, not many weeks left now.
Is the old BR logo because it’s the original finish. Or is it a retro look ?
That's how they were many years ago up in Scotland mate.
Why are such powerful locos used for three coaches, and two of them? I understand there may not be a runround, but surely there are two power cars and a trailer car available ?
There is a runround but the service would loose time.
@@antman09ful1 ok. I still think its a bit over powered.
I hear the hire fees have been paid through to July '19....
That's great news Mike.
Too bad that a trip to the U.K. doesn’t seem to be in the cards. I’d really have liked to see the end of the Class 37, and in my family’s native area too.
Well Brian I understand your problem, you will have to watch mine our other peoples videos when the end gets near. Thank you for watching this one.
antman09ful1 I’ll make another trip back eventually. Thank you because your videos are really good.
Thank you.
Are the class 37 around Suffolk and Essex too? The area around Sudbury and Chelmsford is where my family is from.
No they are not Brian, just the two lines from Norwich to the coast.
2 months to go, and about the same for the manual gates and signals. End of an era....
You surprise me Chris because I think they will keep the 37s there longer, I hope you are wrong but you may now more as you are in the area.
They're better than the dreadful Pacer Railbuses we have to put up with in my area of the North West. Northern Rail could use these.
I was just thinking the same thing any thing is better than those.
I agree James and John, hope they keep going well into the summer. Mike.
37407 what a fucking tractor!!
Thanks for viewing the video mate.
Please forgive my ignorance. Why two hugely powerful engines for such a small train?
Because they can
It saves time running round the train at each end of the line.
What is happening to them? Being withdrawn or just moved to other duties?
This service they do is the last everyday passenger work you will see these locos on in this country, after May they will still do charter work and test trains around the country. Thank you for watching Callum.
@@antman09ful1 Which service is this and where?
The run from Norwich to GT Yarmouth and Lowestoft.
@@antman09ful1 Many thanks
@@antman09ful1 What about the Cumbrian duties ? they're still using the 37s for now......?
End of an era.
Well on that line Phillip. Cheers,
Why does it take 2 class 37’s to move 3 carriages?
for acceleration/reliability reasons only. A single 37 could shift 12 Mk2's on its on just at far slower timings than required to match those of sprinter timings.
It save time having to run the loco round.
More the merrier
Yeah I was wondering the same. Thanks others for explaining.
I'm glad they don't, but wouldn't it be much cheaper and easier to use a DMU?
Due to our breathtakingly incompetent government and their privatised rail cronies, we seemed to have run out of DMUs in that area today today. So get out the emergency train service formed of wonderful old locos and stock.
I'm very happy there is a DMU shortage guys, thanks for your interest in my video.
The engine is pretty loud could use a muffler or something like that
Louder the better I think, thanks for watching.
@@antman09ful1 of course it doesn't matter that it was a little loud that was just my opinion though
Were you 'filming'...That is interesting, was it 9.5mm or the less popular 8mm? Did you know that the big movies in the '50's 60's and 70's used 30mm film? Bring back film.
Cheers for watching.
@@antman09ful1 You are welcome! Keep on filming squire.
I surprised that Diesel is still there it's older than anyone I know
Well they are great Engines.
Why are they using two locos for only 3 carriages?
Because in that part of the network they are short of unit, and if they only use one loco they will lose time when the loco has to run round the train. Thanks for taking a look Graham.
Johnny Foreigner, here.... what line is this...?
Hi Johnny these locos work from Norwich to GT Yarmouth and Lowestoft, thank you for watching my video.
Is that in the UK?
Yes in Norfolk.
Their hunting engines do my head in though.
Oh right, well they do my head in but in a good way, thanks for watching.
@@antman09ful1 Is it possible for something to do one's head in in a good way?
Can’t believe they were used for passenger duty this late in their life ?
I'm very pleased they are still available for passenger work Chris. Thank you for watching.
2 locomotive's for 2 carriages, why???
Hahaha i noticed that to
@Steve AtTheVan plus with just one loco they couldnt keep up to the timetable designed for the 170 class and sprinters
They are short of units so this train has taken over, If only one loco operated this service the train would get later and later having to run round the train at each end, and would the passengers be happy NO.
Cheers Steve.
Surely this 1950/60 polluting diesel technology has no place today even in a rural setting. On a heritage line maybe!
these 1950/60 polluting diesel technology has a place in any rural setting, they are reliable enough and can go where heavy diesel can not go.
Good point! At least they are not Class 31s eh!
All locos new and old give out clag, but these class 37s wont be on this line for much longer.
Less polluting than building new hybrids with batteries made from scarce materials which have to be mined with very dubious environmental methods! And I bet they won't last 50 plus years either ! Remember the 37 can be used from heavy freight to light passenger duties unlike a dmu.
Even if they the old 1950 technology they can still make these old units envromental friendly for today's use..
