RHTT DRS Class 37's drag 3x GA Class 321 units after pulling the OHL wires down near Colchester Town

- Not the best footage, sorry, but captures the scene in a rushed moment. 37402 and 37424 (558) save the day. Shortly after leaving Colchester Town on the first train of the day the wires came down. Its not clear if a train or over head line fault. The Rail Head Treatment Train was the only train in the area suited to pull the units clear. An unusual sight. Filmed 8/11/19.
That's an impressive bit of work by those two Tractors. Not only are they pulling the RHTT, but also the two Dusty Bins!
Okay friends just admit it, BEAUTIFUL trains in England!!! I LOVE the sound of your diesel locomotives as compared to what I'm accustomed to hearing here in America. Love that clatter as it's music to my ears! I intend on buying the Class 37 locomotive in OO-gauge to broaden my fleet of the wonderful British model railway trains that I have. Great video and thanks for sharing it.
where do you buy trains
Drive it!! Train simulation
Ts 2020
Bus wise Leyland TL11 and Gardner engines very popular
I worked as a driver for BR for 25 wonderful years, I drove 37's and many other newer types, I left in 2011 and to this day when I hear that sound from the EEV12 i want to cry, I loved those locos, miss them more than my ex wife.
I was sat a few cars back in the traffic at the crossing that day! I remember seeing them. Love the 37s
Now - that's a great 'real-life' example of 'weathering' for railway modelers.
I thought the same thing! Some of the weathering that I've seen in model railway have been on the light side as compared to this real life example.
@@bhigdaddymark condition of engines and stock has always varied from depot to depot
@@bhigdaddymark as for this real life example id say that thats one unnautrally dirty 37..looks as if it hasmt been cleaned in literal years, which of course especially in days of old wasnt the case engines were cleaned fairly regularly. Youd be pretty hard pressed to find an engine quite that dirty in a real life scenario
Mark Ferguson, Amateur Organist RHTT MP in trail quickly gets covered in Sandite. With constant reversals both loco's get evenly coated as a matching pair. Cleaning isn't diagrammed so the rarest combination is an RHTT with a long suffering, filthy, loco at one end with a spotless replacement loco at the other.
RHTT locos are always mucky, when they are jetwashing the leaf pulp off the rails the rear loco cops most of the crud they blast off
Can’t beat the whistle of those 37’s powering up
I saw the whole ensemble as I went through Colchester on a Norwich train. Probably the most unusual working of 2019. Well done for capturing it on video.
Thanks, just last minute luck.
That BR blue revised livery would come up a treat when washed 😍
Wow, what a pleasure to see this engine named after Vulcan XH558, needs a good wash!. 😍
"Also available in blue."
She wants a bit tlc
And the aim is that every single EMU will have its own unique colour scheme.......
Looks like a mangled/missing pantograph on the first unit. Consistent with the wires being down.
The rather satisfying purr of the 'Avro Vulcan' in front....
Strange combination of stock all together. Great video 👍
The mighty diesel 37’s power on .....
Love the 37s. Proper old skool engines. Not the same these days.
What would we do without classic diesels! Great video.
man that is one dirty beast !!
Those diesel locos are filthy but at least they get the job done! 😉 😉
Looks like my car after a long winter 😁 Joking apart, they are dirty from the load they have between the loco's - those trucks are for rail-cleaning which uses high-pressure water jets. This generates a huge amount of muddy spray which ends up on the 37's, particularly the one at the rear!
@@davidmilne5122 it was an interesting train load that, enjoyed the video.
Jeezo! They class 37s are needing a good wash. Great video capture.
Wow, I work near there, how did I miss this
Reminds me of the classic Thomas story from the railway series called Super Rescue
@Brickish Railways Just like super rescue all right
@MusicalElitist1 thanks! I try!
Great video. ☺
Thanks! 😊
@@SansPareil Ur welcome. ☺
Exellent catch!
I remember this well, I worked in the hythe and had to get a bus :(
Now that’s a site!!
I love the class 37
The class 321 goes into Stratford and past Romford but sometimes stops at Romford
Very nice catch mate cheers Steve ..
Shame about the signal box...
That was an interesting load
Man those coaches just go on and on.......
3 units 3 liveries
Such a lucky find
Amazing footage mate good
Glad you enjoyed
The "pull of shame".
Superb !
Where was this filmed? I live in the Midlands but was born & bred in Essex. Is it Colchester??
Yep I used to live facing the signal box
Yes, Colchester East Gates crossing.
And this is why I'm glad I'm in the land of the Conductor rail...
Why? CRE has its own issues. Susceptible to floods, ice, being gaped, shoe gears being knocked off etc etc. Both systems have their strengths and weaknesses just depends on the incident.
Nice 🚂👍
Thank you very much!
we will always need diesel electrics especially class 37s
In other words..... 2 tractors pulling 3 bins.....
Yay 😀 😀 😁 😃! the diesel locomotives 🚂 🚂 saved the train 🚞!
That's an unusual design of signal box at the crossing, i'm surprised they haven't pulled it down like so many others right now.
DrFod almost all of the signal boxes between Lewis, Eastbourne and Hastings have now gone. A real shame.
East gate box is listed I believe so can't be demolished
East Gates box was only taken out of use in 2009, so it's not been abandoned for all that long.
2 Beast pulling Dustbins
Can class 37s be used in multiple, one driver controlling all by radio / remote control, like DPUs on USA freight trains?
I honestly believe that they can do this; haven't seen it too often, though.
They can and do like this but only by cable, unlike some other countries like you say in USA that use remote/radio.
Colchester is the best town !!
Is that grime painted on the 37 for authenticity?
just evidence of pure graft and lack of cleaning.
That's a mad configuration...looks like it's coming out of Colchester town station.. so maybe it broke down and the nearest thing was the RAT to get it out the way
A rat was the nickname given to a class 25. A class 37 was known as a Tractor or Growler. Also it says in the description that it brought the wires down, not that it broke down.
@@jsp7202 oh okay... Also the RAT is the rail adhesion train.
So two meanings
@@SBEARD12345 That term must be a little after my departure from the UK, but yes I can see why those initials would be used!
@@jsp7202 normally they don't re- use acronyms
But still incredible seeing that set up
That sort of train is called the RAT by London Underground. It’s called the RHTT - Rail-Head Treatment Train by National Rail.
Curious. Is there significance to the different colors of the passenger doors with each car-set?
No, Greater Anglia just love to mix and match different Liveries. I've lost count as to how many they have
Thinks that 37402 could do with a good scrub.
Nice & think u mean 558 & 402
424 is actually is real number as recorded in all systems.
I saw 37558 then 37402.. where was 37424?
But brilliant photography. It would be good to see some 37s working on the GE mainline, if still possible.
424 is its real number but carries 558 on its side in honour of the Vulcan XH558 (its named after).
37s still operate on the GEML yes
Just not on WTT paths
Was this recent? Not seen a class 37 in service for a long time. Though we only have local services where I live.
37's still operate, 66 i believe were still operating on the mainline, wouldn't think of them as being almost 60 year old locos
2019, 37's still operate through Colchester in 2022 - see my other videos. Next one is due tomorrow actually :)
@SansPareil - last time I saw a class 37 was at Fenchurch Street station, would have been around 10 years ago now.
Something wrong with mic, sound is dreadful!
Yes was only last minute phone footage and phone went a bit nuts just as per normal when you dont want it to.
I saw this train once, maybe it was the train I saw, I also saw it in this legit place
Crikey that second one needs a buff
Nice
Thanks

@@fairportrails107 Just subscribed to you too! Always good to see railfan stuff from the USA! My dad watches tons of it as too old to get over to you now.
@@SansPareil thanks man I'm glad you and your dad enjoy my videos and us trains hopefully our railroads get good again soon and stop doing stuff just to please share holders
Those 37's in BR blue, are they owned by enthusiasts or what ?
you could say that ;)
No. A number of companies, including Network Rail, own/lease class 37's on the UK rail Network. These ones belonged to Direct Rail Services.
tom201090 or not work Rail a term used by rail staff
Brillant
I’m sure that’s a rule book violation. No tail lamp on the back.
Think it was more of a case of get that modern piece of shit out of the way NOW
ha they r crap the 321s so noisy
Your right!
@@richardoakley8800 can we really class the 321 as modern? They gotta be what, at least 25 years old by now
@@richardoakley8800 I think you would have been able to call the 321s modern about 30 years ago!
What are the thing after the 1st train and before the 2nd train for? And before the 2nd train was pulling the 3 rd train ?
Rail Head Treatment Train. They de Ice the conductor rails for electric trains.
Kilo Juliet oh thank you
@@Ducks-are-cool1 clean the compacted leaves off the track head on these rails
Sans Pareil oh Thank you
ducks are cool This Rail Head Treatment Train (RHTT) kit includes tanks filled with water for spray cleaning Autumn leaves off the running rails and tanks filled with Sandite Gel to spread onto the newly washed running rails. This clean and paste treatment reduces the incidence of slip and slide damage to trains which otherwise plagues railways every leaf fall season. De-icing kit could use the same type of tank to source de-icing fluid but it's generally done by service trains fitted underfloor tanks and spray kit or adapted ex-passenger stock.
Why is it slow as a snail
Speed limit is low here anyhow plus the fallen overheads just round the corner were dragging on the roof of the train.
They really should spell 'greater' with a capital G!
tony jones it really isn’t that great... I live there
@@jamesread11 you really missed the point 😂
+Sans Pareil - Pulled the wires down?
Maybe not.It could be a NR maintenance problem.
Either defect in pantograph or overheads - we dont know why they were pulled down.
Thank god I don't still commute on the Liverpool St to Norwich line [ which Colchester town links to] the line was a total nightmare being only single tracked after Shenfield northwards any problem led [ and they were many and various ] to massive delays, I don't think in the twenty years of my commute was there more than 3 days back to back at anyone time without a problem. If you're thinking of moving to Suffolk to commute to London just forget it.
3...2...1... Cables down!
Sorry. 😂
Very true. Thanks for the comment!

Why dead?

Are they out of Service

A prime example of why diesel is better than electric!
Yeh too bad cost disagrees
Why are these 37s in retro BR liveries?
