Insulating My Garage & Testing a Budget Portable AC

  • I’m tackling the intense Phoenix heat by insulating my garage and testing out a budget-friendly portable air conditioner. I purchased the Sanctuary Green Fiber insulation from Lowe’s and installed it in both the attic and garage walls, hoping to make a significant difference in the temperature. For air conditioning, I’m using a 10,000 BTU Newair portable AC. Despite my efforts, the AC just isn’t enough to keep up with the relentless heat.
Join me as I share the insulation process, the performance of the portable AC, and my thoughts on possibly upgrading to a mini-split system in the future.
If you’re dealing with extreme heat in your garage or just curious about insulation and cooling solutions, this video is for you. Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more updates and DIY tips!

I would back the garage door with the best insulation you can afford. That being your biggest source of heat intrusion, it makes sense to me to do that before running lines all over the house. I bet you see a big temperature difference there.

Try adding some insulation to the garage door too. Not a perfect solution but it will help a bit against convection heating.

Garage door needs insulation. I have a 20x24 garage in AZ. My garage door is faced inside with foam board - made a huge difference.

I'm also in Phoenix and debating on a mini-split. Sounds like a real logistical challenge for you. Good luck.

Definitely challenging for a mini-split, given the limitations. I'm not much help with this one. My garage detached and has an open rafter ceiling so I can't insulate it...without installing a ceiling. My walls ad garage doors are insulated. I'm in coastal North Carolina, and while it gets hot, not as hot as there. We also have the humidity to deal with. I'm thinking a gable fan may do the trick for me to at least evacuate some of the heat.

I’ve got basically the same garage heat problem as you do. I’m using a late model Frigidaire portable air conditioner similar to yours and it works pretty well. I think the easiest and most economical solution for your situation would be to run two portable ac units in the garage at the same time. Keeping in mind that they can also be used a dehumidifiers.

Being in the trade I knew right away that A/C wasn’t going to cut it, even for our weather in Canada lol. Definitely need to do a ductless split as you said with some more punch. As least now it will be easier to run the lines through the attic with all that’s insulation lol

Same issue I’m having. I’m in Phoenix as well.

I have an 18,00btu mini split in my two-car garage. I live in Florida, and the North wall and ceiling are not insulated. The mini split efficiently cools to as much as low as I want. The lift pump or attic-mounted system would be the way to go.

Appreciate that. The Indian is a long term press bike. I haven’t shared it on the channel yet aside from briefly mentioning it in my recent Cardo video.

As an XHVAC guy, not a lot of easy options. Do you think a whole house fan in the garage may help? Hope you’re well man a good stuff.

Have you thought about two/three portable A/C units.

Have you insulated the door? Pretty sure you can get hard insulation you can glue on with like and R25-30 value. Granted that doesn't fix the seams, but could be a step in the right direction...

Yes I have put insulation in the door. It was actually one of the first things I did 5 years ago but I somehow forgot to include that tidbit in my video.

Easier to have two people when you blow insulation so someone can feed the hopper! That’s a lot of up and down for you.
I would buy a new insulated garage door. Helps huge!
