hey I have a project coming up of hat and I try makeup brush technique and not work but might work on pencil have a wonderful art day . PS I like your channel SuperRaedizzle and Chloe Rose Art channel as well.
It's recommended when painting fabric no matter the paint you used to heat set it, and not was it immediately. You're supposed to wait a few days before washing so it has time to really set in. Kind of like a stain you don't treat immediately and leave in your dirty pile for days before washing, and doesn't wash out.
@@FuriosasWarRig Yes. She presented it incorrectly! The hack videos I've seen specifically say to leave it and heat seal it as @MoonOwlDesigns suggests. A bit of research _before_ she makes these videos might help, idk.
Hullo Chloe, The vegetable oil is for cleaning oil paints from brushes, a cleaner oil(truly any clean oil product will work) will remove a denser oil from a brush and the oil particle paints. Many painters have used clean oils for cleaning your oil paints out of your dirty oil paint brushes. You are better off trying to use Chelsea lavender cleaner or Masters Brush cleaning soap. I have used Masters brush cleaner to remove even acrylic paints from brushes, but it takes soaking and you do not always get a "perfectly clean" brush. Reshaping brushes is where Masters shines too! I have been able to use them again, so there is that!
I dont actually soak them with the soap for brushes that were basically a brick because of dried paint. I would wet them and activate the soap then kinda just firmly (but also not roughly) scrub them against a raised stiff plastic- in the majority of cases a travel soap container i got at walmart or target. I then rinse/wash off the soap and repeat. It takes about 2 or 3 passes but ive completely revived brushes like that with 0 bristle breakage. I do that also with "new" used brushes i get 2nd hand just to make sure theyre clean. (Getting any possible oils or acrylic out so i dont risk cross contaminating paint mediums)

I’ve heard that the using a makeup brush to blur out a blend was done after the colors are applied and the brush is dry. So it’s a dry brush blend if that makes sense. I loved this video! Just like old times! 💜💜
If you don't use the makeup brush to apply but only to blend and soften edges it works amazingly well. I used that on a sky in acrylics when restoring a painting my dad did. I suck at acrylic and it was champion! Also as you said it is lovely to softly blend oils. Again not to apply the paint with.
I’m an art therapist and work with kids. I work in a ‘professional’ setting but the amount of my clothes with paint on them - if I “retired” all my shirts with paint I wouldn’t have any tshirts left 😂
I love makeup brushes for dry bruising sculptures to bring out the details or brushing soft pastels onto 3D objects. I agree with you, though. I didn't find them useful dipped in the acrylic paint.
I think the vegetable oil is supposed to help break down any remaining OIL paint in the bristles, since those paints realistically can't be solubilized or cleaned with water. This can also work with acrylics to a point, but anything else won't get much more clean than you would get it with soap and water. The oil can also help keep the bristles moisturized and soft/pliable. Oils can break down other oils, so I think that's the idea behind the hack. Using household oils to clean and maintain vs using something like acetone or turpentine which will dry out and potentially cause damage to your brushes over time without proper maintenance.
I absolutely love the relationship building within the YT art community. Regardless of status or subscriber count, y'all seem to have eachothers backs, and I really love that. ❤❤
Someone may have mentioned this already but I'm not about to read 231comments , so here goes... Textile Medium is cheap , it works great and easy to find ! You will have soft ,pliable and permanent outcome . I have used it for years with no issues !
I found you through some subscription box unboxing videos years ago. Those were simpler days. I miss those days. Ah well. Anyways, love your vids! Thanks for the new one.
I got makeup brushes specifically for painting because I hate streaky paint, but it was worse - the bristles all clumped together because they are so soft. Dry brush techniques might be fine though, I haven't tried them for that yet
It's not an uncommon thing for miniature painting (think Warhammer or D&D) to use smaller makeup brushes for dry brushing. They tend to be cheaper than hobby brushes and I've found sooooo many hobby dry brushes are flat instead of poofy, but poofy works so much better for me!
If I remember correctly children's crayola coloured pens (or any like their chunky marker style pens) and a chunky straw work like a blow pen, you need a bit of effort to get it to work but I used to do that when little but they might have changed the ingredients used in the pens so not sure if it still works
Paint brush cleaning and shaping hack.. I always just put a drop or two of dishwashing liquid into my paint water. And my brushes always hold their shape and it helps to clean them at the same time. (I never bother buying special dishwashing liquid for it, just whatever we are using for dishes at the time)
I know a few artists that use make up brushes as dry brushes for blending over paints already applied. I don’t wear makeup, so don’t quote me on this, but I think they are blush brushes; the ones that are larger, very full, probably an in in diameter if you squeeze the bristles together. The pains are applied with other brushes first and then dry brushed over to blend. I personally use makeup brushes for cleaning camera gear because of it’s softness.
The giant marker project was fun. I’ve seen some neat Mod Podge crafts and tips, especially from My Froggy Stuff. Now you can use it to store posters rolled up inside. Or maybe some shipping supplies? It has a removable lid so you can use it as well as have it for decoration.
The master cleaner and preserver is the best brush cleaner you can buy. It has the cleaner with a litte grit and brush conditioner in it so it makes your brushes last longer.
Regarding makeup brushes, they are used a lot with model making or sculpting to dry brush highlights etc as they tend to be cheaper than actual dry brushing brushes 😊
I love using make-up brushes for blending. I use the big cheek brushes. Also in South Africa we have a brand of soap called Dove which will remove acrylic paint from clothing if done soon after messing, I brushed up against Mars black on a painting and using Dove to wash the dress, no more Mars balck. I saw a video on restoring paintbrush bristles using hair conditioner and another one using a curling tong to straighten them
We have the same brand of soap in the states too 😂 works as you say. Also, if you get the bar soap, and roll the brushes around on it - don’t get it sudsy, just coated - and leave it to air dry it works the same as the Vaseline only no gunk or mess 😂
I made fabric paint of acrylic paint mixed with conditioner, 1 on 1. Worked well and after many washes still on the hoodie. Though I don't put it in the dryer.
They used to sell 'blow pens' as children's toys. I have a version that has a clamp that allows you to mount the marker at the right angle and is attached to a foot pump via a length of hose. Hours of fun!
But once you've covered your paintbrush in oil and vaseline to make it look nice, does it still paint well afterward? I'm interested to see if all the oils resist the paint, or it mixes in with the paint, etc. I would assume you're only supposed to use a small amount, but those were my first thoughts.
Your brushes won’t be good for watercolour. You have to really REALLY clean it before using it for waterbased products. For oil paint it’s ok… you need to work the paint into the brush a bit more but you can shape your brush tip with a tiny bit of hard soap too
I feel in love with your art hack videos because you were so funny! And it was a time in my life where I desperately needed some lighthearted entertainment and you did that for me and gave me some laughs with your reactions to the art hacks 😊
The oil only works to clean them if u used oil paints. Remember from Chemistry that like dissolves like. Since acrylic is water based it isn’t going to do anything. U need a water based brush cleaner The makeup brush Rae Dizzle has been saying that for a while.
@@Charky_Creations yeah alcohol will work on some water based stuff, it tends to be a bit of an outlier but in general oil wont do anything in this scenario.
Hi Chloe! I love your videos... regardless of what you are doing in them. Art hacks, creating something, unboxing ... I don't care. Just appreciate seeing your smiling face on UA-cam!
I paint miniatures and I and several other mini painters I know use makeup brushes for drybrushing and wet blending. They are brilliant for textured surfaces.
My recommendation regarding cleaning brushes: First use special brush cleansing soap (can be found on Amazon etc.) or turpentine (depending on what you painted with), then dip them in pure mineral oil. If you use the brushes for oil based paints, wrap the cleaned, mineral oil dipped brushes in aluminum foil for storage. Best wishes
If ever you need to do a project with large lettering you can use word to create 3D letters. Make them the size you need, then print it out. You can add chalk to the back and then trace it onto the paper. It will help give you letters that are all the same size and font! 😊 you can also reuse this to gently trace on your letters where you would like them! This will help you with spacing out your letters 😊 You can also use lightly scribbled pencil so you can clean up the area around the letters after!
I just add fabric/textile medium to acrylic paint if I want to paint on clothes. I guess that's not a hack, because that's what it's used for, but it does genuinely work, so I dont understand why more people don't just do that.
Honestly, my favorite way to blend acrylic paint is my fingers. I'm able to tap it and basically dry brush it almost, and it gets a really smooth gradient
For the makeup brush, I apply the paint with a regular brush and then blend with the makeup brush when dry. You just barely touch the paint. Similar motion to blushing your face. It's great for skies and underwater so you can't see any paint strokes at all.
As for the second live hack: I saw a similar video on Pinterest and was able to successfully repeat it There are several conditions: 1 - the stem of the pen through which you blow should have a narrowing to the tip, so that the air flow is narrower. You have too wide undirected airflow, you need to apply more force, as a result of which everything splashes and spreads 2 - You need to blow at a certain angle, not just on the tip, but a little to the side, preferably up. You need to sit a drop of ink with the tip instead of just directing air at it.And also just a tip that there should be a certain distance between the marker and the paper, then the splashes are better 3 - You need to be able to apply force to your breathing, you did not get splashes, but drips because you blew for a long time. For a simple, spray-free splash, you just need to blow quickly as if you were blowing the dust away 4 - Markers can even be childish felt-tip pens or highlighters or permament markers, they just need to be full of ink so that the tip is "juicy", with "dry" markers it does not work even if they write perfectly on paper. I don't know if it's about what markers you use or not, but soaking in alcohol or something like that DOESN'T really help, the splashes will be translucent and will spread like droll 🤕 (yeah I experiment with this a bit). You just need the marker to be full of ink in the tip
I add fabric medium to my acrylic paint to make fabric paint. Fabric softener is cheaper so if that works I'll be using that from now on. But you can just iron it before putting in the wash and it will stay adhered to fabric. (You are susposed to iron fabric paint before washing too for that matter) My mom and i paint quilt squares from coloring book images traced onto fabric squares.
From my experience it doesn’t work, I saw another hack recommending it this morning and all the comments say it didn’t work for them either 😫 personally I wouldn’t trust it!
OOOOH I love these so much, I think I found you through Jazza but I definitely watched all of your art hack video's when I did. Found out you're fricking funny and subscribed haha
My dad paints skies a lot and he swears by puffy makeup brushes for clouds. They might not be better for blending, but I’ve gone through several sets using them in my crafts, a cheap set is a great thing to have in your arsenal ☺️
The vaseline hack seems good but surely you would need to wash the vaseline off before you use the brush so I'm not sure how effective it would be long term? The makeup brush hack is better used on a larger scale and also after using a normal brush. Use your regular brush to apply and slightly blend the paint as usual, then get a **dry** fluffy brush and swirl it in the blended area in circles to diffuse the brush strokes and soften the blend out towards the edges. It really does give an almost seamless blend. It's especially good for glowy effects around candles/lanterns/stars etc and also for creating a Bokeh style background.
Not sure if anyone else mentioned it. But another plus for the make up brushes for blending (not applying paint only blending) is they tend to be made better than the mop type brushes for blending so you don't get the brush hairs coming out and onto the painting.
Hi! I use a blusher brush to brush eraser rubble off the page when I'm getting rid of pencil marks after inking or lightening up an undersketch - never tried letting it near the paint though!
I used to use Vaseline to clean and keep my oil brushes in good shape, they had to be throughly washed after of course. I was taught that many years ago when I did a traditional sign writing course.
Rae did the blow pen thing with the marker a VERY long time ago and it worked pretty well, but the aim was poor... I think she used a washable Crayola marker... Water based.
Her being so amazed by hack 2 while all I can think is I’m so old I remember when crayola(?) sold this idea to kids lol. It was 100% a thing cause I remember accidentally blowing to hard on the straw and staining the rug then moving the tv stand forward to cover it and it never being discovered till after my grandma passed😭
Yes the first one I thought that would happen. Softener is supposed to come out with water so mixing paint with it should make the paint come out, not stay
As a teen I bought 3 sets of chubby markers 2 in each that came with a small squeezy ball that did the blowing on the markers. They were like airbrushing with markers. The point was the few stencils they came with ( like tattoos). Fun for a while. I stored the markers nib down. Love the marker idea, especially for storage.( 🇨🇦)
I use acrylic paint mixed with a little bit of textile medium when I’m painting on freckles or moles on my vinyl dolls. I think the textile medium is supposed to help turn acrylic paint into fabric paint. I would trust it more than the fabric softener. I have used fabric softener on doll hair though. Also, I totally relate to having a supply/tool and losing it a moment later. It also happens often when I’m wrapping gifts. With the vegetable oil, I think it’s supposed to be used to clean oil paints off of brushes, as an alternative to harsher chemicals such as turpentine.
The blowing method is an “old” technique. Some company the name of which I cannot remember, used to sell a balloon type blower on a British craft channel a few years back. It was attached to pens for spraying colour. I also don’t remember whether alcohol or watercolour pens were used which shows how impressed I was with the end results!

Ahh thank you sm 😭 I feel like she made it a little too yellow gold so I’m supposed to be going back next week to lighten a little more!!
The Crayola made the background so cool! I really need to make one now
Omg yay a new video after a long school day!😃
OOOOH I love these so much, I think I found you through Jazza but I definitely watched all of your art hack video's when I did. Found out you're fricking funny and subscribed haha
I love what you made! Looks so realistic! I also love your hair 😍🥰xx
I use makeup brushes to get a soft blur when painting. They are some of my favorite brushes!
The marker craft is so rad! Love it
Pls part2😊😊 I love your video!!❤❤❤❤
That giant marker was incredible! I need to do this! But no room 🤔🤔🤔
I usually use textile medium; you mix it with acrylic to paint on fabric. I'd like to do a side by side test.
I don't remember exactly but if you do the fabric softener hack aren't you supposed to set in a hot dryer before you wash? I think. Not sure. 😂
That large marker would make a perfect coin bank!
Rae did the blow pen thing with the marker a VERY long time ago and it worked pretty well, but the aim was poor... I think she used a washable Crayola marker... Water based.
Doodle Bob was just perfect 😂
I cackled at the DoodleBob reference 😂😂
Her being so amazed by hack 2 while all I can think is I’m so old I remember when crayola(?) sold this idea to kids lol. It was 100% a thing cause I remember accidentally blowing to hard on the straw and staining the rug then moving the tv stand forward to cover it and it never being discovered till after my grandma passed😭
Makes me remember how much i miss Art Attack!!❤
Yes the first one I thought that would happen. Softener is supposed to come out with water so mixing paint with it should make the paint come out, not stay
As a teen I bought 3 sets of chubby markers 2 in each that came with a small squeezy ball that did the blowing on the markers. They were like airbrushing with markers. The point was the few stencils they came with ( like tattoos).
Fun for a while. I stored the markers nib down.
Love the marker idea, especially for storage.( 🇨🇦)
The pen and marker thing does work, it works really well with sharpies though
I use acrylic paint mixed with a little bit of textile medium when I’m painting on freckles or moles on my vinyl dolls. I think the textile medium is supposed to help turn acrylic paint into fabric paint. I would trust it more than the fabric softener. I have used fabric softener on doll hair though.
Also, I totally relate to having a supply/tool and losing it a moment later. It also happens often when I’m wrapping gifts.
With the vegetable oil, I think it’s supposed to be used to clean oil paints off of brushes, as an alternative to harsher chemicals such as turpentine.
for shaping brushes you can you egg white, if cook an egg: go with your brush in the shell, shape it and wash a day later.
Yes! Please do more of this :)
"Jackie is basically me but canadian" truer words have never been spoken 😂
The marker was really great. Good find for a project.
Thank you for the video Chole, I love the giant marker ❤❤❤❤❤
Real missed opportunity to make a Rose Art marker instead of a Crayola 😂
