It’s like people who know nothing about Gears just saw the gameplay, heard some banter between Cole and Baird, and came to the conclusion that these are just big dumb buff guy chainsaw games. Kait is more toxic than any male character (not counting Locust obviously) from the previous games besides Prescott himself, and at least he did his fucked up shit because he was trying to save humanity.

The best part about Gears was the prologue in Gears 4. We get to experience (briefly) the Pendulum Wars, E-Day and V-Day from the eyes of grunts. As soon as I saw the Swarm and realised that we didn’t ‘kill’ the Locust in Gears of War 3, I reacted with nothing other than “wow, this is lame.”
They had the opportunity to explore the universe through spin-offs, but no we get sequels to a story that had a satisfying conclusion. We get annoying, disrespectful and forceful new characters that alienated me the whole way through the sequel games.
Now that I think about it, having the Locust come back makes everything you fought for in Gears 1-3 be in vain! The Coalition really dug themselves into a hole, making the Locust 2.0 into super soldiers able to adapt to anything

That Swarm never should have happened, and if it had to, it should have ended at Gears 4. The Swarm would never have been as effective if Kait never had to connect to the Berserker Matriarch and awaken Reyna.
I don't think that a sequel was a bad idea but they wasted the potential. I remember hearing an interesting theory before Gears 4 that the Swarm were creatures that lived underground BELOW the imulsion. And we never saw them in the previous games because, of course, they had no way to get through all the imulsion and pass it, so after the original trilogy ended with the Lambent, Locust, and Imulsion gone, they were able to expand outward.
But no, the one single thing no one wanted of the Locust just coming back happens.

@@gloriouss6352 one of the reasons why I enjoyed the change from JD after what happened with the hammer of dawn is that he became far more responsable and more tough, only to have "little missy more important than you" telling him that her personal problems are bigger than saving the lives of the people in that village.
@Liam Whatling Only to have it taken away for a character that adds nothing to the story besides being a spokeperson for the devs idiotic ideology of pushing more strong female leads, as if there were none in gaming before. Decided to sacrifice a potential good narrative for more whiny Kait and her "drama" about being the granddaughter of Myrrah, having everyone cater to her and show complete disregard towards the chain of command and trying to protect people from the swarm.
The problem with the newer Gears games stems from the main character, Kate. Every problem branches out from her.

The problem with Kait is she's basically like a teenager with authority problems, which wouldn't be such a problem if she was a secondary or background character but no she's basically what the entire storyline of these new games is based around which is really BAD.
The only problem I have with Gears as opposed to GOW, is that Kait is so insubordinate that she’d be discharged from the military real quick.

Oh my god yes! My friend says Gears 2 is his favorite and while he and I have quite different personality types I think Gears 2 is my favorite as well. They should add more environmental desctrution to the Ultimate version. With Unreal Engine 5 coming out it can begin by the community I bet with permission from Epic. Just like how Unreal Tournment 4 was supposed to go.

Blown away that from a writing perspective, Kait is simply allowed to say and do as she pleases with no repercussions or consequences.
Every character stood around her just gives her the podium, and the story flows accordingly.

looks like entertainment to gen Z, and the today tiktok and instagram media for those people... i like gears 4 mechanics and history, it is relatable, but the new gears are clearly less aggressive in terms of military performance and more in a social way... wich is pretty impresive because they are at war and most of the time the old ones are carrying the plot and the new ones are like scolded childs... wich is pretty bad, but i enjoyed the 4th game, at least in latin spanish the voice actors are more normal than the english ones, but still feel like pretty bad management in history, i were playing gears ultimate and i had problems not with the story but finding some doors, and then i went to gears 3 (i do not have gears 2 right now) then i were playing and the story were pretty chaotic in a good way, but i wanted to her "in and out" in-game so i play gears 4, it were like i said, but the mechanics and the controller were pretty good polished, i think i end that game more because the gameplay is pretty good, more than the history, or the characters.
I got bored in gears 4 and 5. 3 is still my favorite.

Remember that Marcus Fenix was in prison because he disobeyed orders to try to save his father. Marcus Fenix was a famous war hero and they still put him in prison. So yes, Kait the grunt should be in prison or shot for going AWOL if the writers followed the logic of their universe.

Summary execution would possibly be a little out of line without a trial first, but nobody is going to refuse a lawful order, lay hands on their CO, and get away with it. Given Kait's amazing dedication to not exhibiting military values and other conduct unbecoming, she'd be lucky if she got a reassignment to make big rocks into little rocks. Although Marcus and crew always seemed to me like the sort to try percussive maintenance before using official means.
The original Marcus would've given her the "unexpected chainsaw training" he threatened Ben Carmine with for that.

Absolutely disagree about the old characters, they should have been left out of this whole thing entirely. The new games should have been set 250 years in the future so the devs would have no choice but to actually invest in writing good new characters, rather than banking on nostalgia to carry them.

For me, Kate is easily the most unlikable character in all of video games, tv, movie, etc. She is so intolerable she’s the sole reason I stopped playing gears 5 after the second mission. At least in gears 4 she wasn’t shoved down my throat as “the main character”. I don’t use this word a lot but I actually HATE her with a passion.
I'm very happy to see there's still gears of war fans who see the truth behind the new trilogy. Its a bastardized version of something truly special from my childhood. The music, characters, story, everything about it felt like it was made from passion instead of a cash grab made to milk old fans dry

I've honestly been wondering myself, "why don't I like these new games?" I mean I love the older games, I grew up with them. Playing Gears in Elementary school with my dad and eventually my friends. We loved the gritty take on the Gears games, it was bloody, scary, and intriguing. But when Gears 4 came out I felt sort of empty when playing it, I couldn't nail what it was but I felt disinterested in the game. Gears 5 which I got last year I thought was slightly better than 4 but still couldn't nail what was missing. I wasn't pulled in by the new characters nor was I super excited to see where the story went. This franchise has dug itself in its own grave, they retconned plot points from the old games and left me unsatisfied with the new games. It really hurts to see this franchise kind of go down a weird path, this game was a huge part of my childhood. While most kids sat around playing Lego games and Minecraft, I played Gears along with those games. You nailed it with the full analysis, I really couldn't nail why I felt like I couldn't enjoy Gears games as much anymore. I didn't know if I was just getting older if the series was getting worse or I was moving on. You earned a sub for deep diving into this, I enjoyed the video.

Couldn’t have said it better myself! I actually had to force myself to complete the Gears 5 campaign. It was just so boring and the characters so unlikable I could only play it for like an hour at a time. It actually took me a week to finish the main campaign. With the original trilogy, I had to stop myself from playing the game too much so I could savor everything and rely enjoy the story.

The first 4 Gears of War games were "too masculine" for this era of SWJ crap. That's why they had that rude little girl as the main character in Gears 5.
It amazes me how people these days think being a child than an adult is what's going to save the world. That's why no one is acting like adult and why people deride the old works as "too Mature." They do not want to shoulder the burden of being a responsible adult.

When you spoke of the stakes in game I really agree, I just replayed the mission in Gears of War 2 when your on Dizzy’s rig. The stakes felt real as King Ravens were shot out of the sky and Rigs off the road, not to mention the characters talking over the radios about fallen comrades.
This is the problem with sequel trilogies. It’s hard to make the stakes as important as the previous trilogy.
After jd messed up with the hammer of dawn at the start of gears 5 I was ready and excited to see him grow from it maybe turning from a friendly rebellious cluts into a Mature leader learning from his past mistake and understanding that this is a war and not a joke. Instead I got Kate 😐

A week or so ago I was talking to a friend about playing Gears 2 with him. He was going off about how it was a bad game because it was old.
Later on, he said that he remembered that he actually played a Gears game a little while back, actually. And he said that a scene made him cry.
I was expecting something like Ben's death, or one of the scenes with Dom, but nope. He meant choosing between Del and JD in Gears 5.
Man got teared up over making a choice between Annoying and Unlikable. You can't make this stuff up.
We're gonna keep on getting games like Gears 5, because of 3 things.
-1: The devs have no respect or understanding about the franchise
-2: The devs don't care about what the playerbase says, they chalk that up to toxicity and entitlement. No, the devs only care about what the shills at places like IGN say.
-3: Players like my friend here. Players who have never experienced the original, so they have no point of reference for how bad the modern games are.
We're in a liminal time. There's a new generation of squeakers playing video games these days. They've never touched a 360 or a PS3. Heck, some of them probably haven't used a One or a PS4. These new players won't have the same experience we did. So a lot of these long-lived, older franchises either die out as their fans grow older, or they try to live with the times, and lose their identity.
Bro, like, also the setup for the Gears 5 choice. Like, Queen Reyna says nothing about making choices for anything. The game just outright says choose someone. Kait has the knife in her hand and coulda gone Thanos style aim for the head, but like no. I only chose JD 'cause the knife was in my right hand and he was on the right side of the screen. SMH.
When Gears 4 came out I kinda did like the campaign, had potential and I was interested. Gears 5 did very little, I learned nothing new and they added barley anything. All they did was say that Kait was related to Myraa which everyone already knew, Reyna is back, and the hammer of dawn is online. That’s it, I thing else. I don’t know how there isn’t more ratings calling it bad.
Because they deleted most reviews from day one to February of that following year. I did a day one rating giving critical feedback and not being a dick still got deleted. It was a 3/5 star rating. XBOX HAS A FAKE Gears 5 rating

@@dukes1993724 It actually does because in Gears of War 4 it was basically shown that JD was going to be the new face of the franchise, son of Marcus Fenix and it had the feel of a kind of passing of the torch from Marcus to him. In Gears 5 they decided like a lot of media today they wanted to prop up gender politics instead of telling a good story. So all game long JD is treated like a horrible person though nothing he does is all that bad, and when he returns in the 3rd act he goes around continuing to be a decent guy and apologizing to everyone while his "friends" keep looking down on him. Why? Because he is straight white guy, and in this era of modern media that's an unforgivable sin, so the game goes out of it's way to tear JD down whenever it can and tries (but fails) to prop up Kait as the new face of the franchise but she is childish, entitled, petulant, always seems angry even when people are being nice to her. Then there is Del who I liked a lot in Gears 4 but hated in Gears 5 because like JD he was meant to be the new Marcus, Del was the new Dom. Was anyway, that role gets scraped into turning him into an annoying, goofy, comic relief character who you can't take seriously for even a moment every time I started to like Del he would say or do something idiotic. Now Gears of War was never a brilliant storyline but it was one you could take seriously even if just as an action game. These games are like if someone tried to take the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Gears of War throw them in a blender then call it good. Those things do not mesh well at all. As they are two very different styles of entertainment trying to do very different things. God I am not holding out much hope for Gears 6.
The line, "This isn't about you! It's about me!", made me shut off my console without saving. I tried giving the new games a chance, but, WOW did they fuck it up...
No proper character development, every problem revolves around Kait, not the Locust, and they even turned the original cast in to cardboard characters, in the games AND the books >:/
The new book when Gears 4 came out, did NOTHING substantial for its new main cast. I don't even want to touch the books after that. The audiobooks suck, too.

If it was actually a plot point that Kate was actually a civilians that picked up rifle and pretended to be a soldier due to having some personal stake in the conflict and we trying to not be found out, that might've actually been more interesting than what we got.

Gears 4 made me love JD. JD became one of my favorite characters after playing that games story, but I fucking HATED HOW 5 decided *Hey remember the guy you played as? Yeah let’s just throw him out like some fuckin side character after the prologue!*
Also, about the lack of adherance to the chain of command, said chain of command doesn't even work right in Gears.
In the US Army, a new soldier starts out as a Private and will stay one until about a year in service, in which they get promoted to Private First Class. A year after that, they get promoted to Specialist, the rank that MG guys and Grenadiers typically occupy, and a year after that, they get promoted to Corporal.
It isn't even a year after Gears 4, and yet Kait skipped what (if Epic based the COG's military off of ours) should have been THREE YEARS of service, and even then, she does NOT have the right to lead ANYONE.
And sure, Marcus got shot up a lot of ranks in Gears of War when Kim died, but that was specifically because Kim was killed and Marcus was the next best guy to take charge of Delta.
What should have happened in that god-awful "this isn't about you, it's about me!" scene was Marcus putting Kait in her place, then telling JD "And that's how you deal with insubordination, James."

@@jujuthethird4602 But some people will blame others anyway, that is how human beings work. What you say is true, and would work as a resolution/catharsis. Stranded have no problem blaming the cog, and Hoffman in Gears 1 definitely had an issue with Fenix being let out.
This(carmine) is a particular case, and would work more on the grounds of its a video game and we have seen the family die firsthand. We never even see how Clay feels about losing Lizzie, nor do we see JD offer condolences.

I would not say it’s Microsoft trying to destroy these series on purpose more by accident they want to continue these stories. they know the games sell the problem is the studios they set up to continue these games 343 for Halo and Coalition for gears just have no clue what they’re doing and have basically none of the original people who made the games that these companies are being asked to continue. The end result 343 and coalition make ok at best and dumpster fire at worst games ( I like Halo 4’s story then Halo 5 was dumpster fire of a story, mp was fine though) and now both studios have to some how save their stories in game 6 and I doubt they could realistically pull it off

anyone else feel like kait's arc died in the middle of gears 5 with the matrich, i think rather than JD turn bad it should have been Kait, she is related to Myrah after all, would've been cool to see one of the good guys go bad and see how all our favourite old characters and the new react to seeing someone they care for go bad ... maybe not a perfect plot but better than zombie reyna :/

@Josh Ochoa we can hope. But i feel it's too late for some of these plot beats to happen now. I really hope they do something with reyna cause right now she stands as a massive waste of a character, we really need a reason to get more invested in the swarm. Kinda feel the story is a but aimless at the moment, but i still hold hope for gears 6 :)

My biggest beef with Gears 5: the choice at the end. Like, why? Why give you the choice of who to save and who to let die? To be more, "ground-breaking?" To be more like Mass Effect, maybe? Is Gears 6 going to take into consideration the choice you made or are the writers going to take the lazy way out and make it so whomever they choose lives and dies and the rest of us just have to deal with knowing how we played Gears 5 was pointless?
They did it to make Gears 6 more replay-able. Play once seeing how it dies with JD dead, than another play through with Del dead.
The biggest display of everything that is wrong with the writing is for me, Dom’s death, I literally had tears in my eyes, mostly due to the connection the writers were able to deliver

Gears of War 2s Locust Theme with the vocal chanting is my favorite track from the franchise.
Kait is possibly one of the worst characters in modern gaming. Whoever wrote her dialogue and narrative effectively promoting her to the lead character in the last 2 games needs firing and kept away from Gears games forever.
Its the same with so many films and other cultural products. Kait is this grotesque caricature of what a strong female character is and you find so many such badly written characters everywhere.
Gamers actually like good female leads, often preferring them to the male equivalents, but any criticism of bad writing or storytelling featuring females is deflected and written off as sexist and misogynist.

Talking about shafting classic characters. Dom... There are only 3 collectables and 1 Easter egg and 1 sighting. The Easter egg being in 4, collectables being in 4 and 5 and the sighting being at the start of 4. I hate how no one even mentions Dom in the game. For example the rift worm kait mentions Marcus, Cole and baird but not Dom... But let's not talk about dizzy, bernie, the classic onyx guard ect

Glad I didn't waste my money. The gears I grew up on was fun, atence, scary, sad, joy, entertainment and a brother hood. I felt like I was actually in war fighting for freedom, safety and peace. Everything you said was 💯% on point, couldn't said it any better. I played Gears 4 and wasn't really feeling the storie like the other Gear games.
VAST majority of the reason most people bought these newer games (that were long time GOW fans) was nostalgia alone, which quickly wore off when they actually played them

Don't think they will. That would require them to give a damn about fans, and they don't even listen to them. The problem is, MS (and most of the gaming industry) and their devs don't talk to the fans + when they hear criticism, they just call you a racist or women-hating bastard. They will NEVER admit their mistakes and that they are more activists than games creators.
The gameplay is pretty terrible too. The fact that EVERY enemy is a cookie cutter bullet sponge ruins horde and escape. Gears judgement for example did this really well. Even the cheap horde-like missions were fun because each enemy type served a purpose with more than just a big health bar to back them up
I remember Ben Carmine saying "Stand up like a man", now I know why they removed that line. (I play in Spanish)
However the last part of the video is very interesting, my suspicions that this game was Woke have been confirmed, I was one of the fõøls who pre-purchased the game with all the extras and I have regretted it a lot since that day.
Now we know why Kate was linked to the locust, and maybe I don't know something, but I think that decision was made to give prominence to a woman and not a man.
I don't want to imagine the fiasco that Gears 6 is going to be, for my part I only ask that they release the ports of the original trilogy to PC (NO CHANGES/CENSORSHIP FOR THE "NEW AUDIENCES" SOYA CONSUMERS, THANK YOU)

@@ZaMonolith1986 Yeah and not only that the attention to detail was incredibly dumbed down too in Ultimate as well, take a look at some dead bodies in both versions for example, the corpses in the original were rotting half decomposed skeletons while in Ultimate the body are all these generic body models dressed in red with 1 fourth of their head blown off. And that's just the tip of the iceberg too.

I got into Gears of War myself on February 2022, when I was bored and got the first one for shits and giggles. The result: I was immediately attached to its story, gameplay, and atmosphere, and I got and played the games from beginning to end, and even now I'm replaying 1 and 2 while enjoying 3's multiplayer.
I haven't even played Gears 4 and 5, but I can't stand them. I've been writing fanfiction for other games I love for years, and while I have heavy doubts of my ability, I believe that I can at least tell good writing and tone from bad, and Gears 4-5 fall *directly* into the bad category.
Kait is, to put it bluntly, a piece of shit on the road who would either instantly recieve a dishonorable discharge for insubordination, execution, or not even be recruited in the first place, and she is such an entitled brat that I couldn't even be around her for five seconds without losing my shit, and for them to shoehorn her in the MC role when they had the perfect opportunity to redeem JD or just stop is bullshit of the highest order.
And the lighting and atmosphere? My God, do I hate it. I think I've always hated overly colorful tones in games, but Gears makes a game that looked both great for the time and had a darker aesthetic look like either a toy or Halo 3, which looked way too clean for what was supposed to be a desperate final battle in a long-running galactic conflict.
Anyways, other than Gears 5's MP quotes and character interactions (I love how supportive and sweet Anya is to JD,) I hate everything about the Coalition and Gears, and I hate that Gears of War turned into this.
