Client horror stories are entertaining because it's weird to know people like that exist out there meanwhile I have a hard time telling a hair stylist I hate what they did to my hair.
As an introvert, I would NEVER consider texting my hairstylist about my personal life, and even less talking about s*x with them. I'm the type to not say a word during the whole appointment except the normal courtesy and what haircut I want. Maybe she was very lonely, but it's not your responsibility to be there for her in every moment she needs help
I’ve gone to message a stylist before and realized it was like 8pm so I decide to wait till the next day during normal business hours. I truly can’t imagine being like this omg
I've learned that crossing paths with certain people is never a mistake. I feel like they are put in our path to shape us and help us recognize our limits so that we learn to respect ourselves and learn to put boundaries. They are all lessons,....whether it be friends, strangers, co-workers, ex's,....I think every person we come across teaches us lessons and help us grow as people. I'm definitely not the same person I was 10 years ago and I honestly have the people that caused me the most stress to thank for that. Thanks for sharing these stories with us. I think you handled that situation amazingly well.
I'm not a hairstylist. I'm a therapist. I also have boundaries and definitely strong boundaries. I've had patients email me or try to look me up on social media and engage with me there. It's not appropriate. I love my hair stylist and I hear about how her clients step over boundaries and demand a variety of favors all the time. It's definitely important to set boundaries early on. Thanks for sharing!
I am a designer and I get so annoyed when clients don't show up to their scheduled appointments. We send out email reminders and call the day before to confirm and still have no shows. It is disrespectful of our time and takes us away from other potential clients. Thankfully I am hourly at this job but if I worked commission I'd be pissed. I had one client with 12 bathrooms! I spent the equivalent of an entire week creating bespoke designs for each and every bathroom and both laundry rooms as well as rendering them in the computer. Only to have them to not show up to the final presentation. I have not been able to get ahold of them since either. That was several hundred thousand dollars in a potential sale and numerous hours down the drain. And they gave no indication that they were going to flake like that either.
Omg, when I have a client that talks about inappropriate things loud enough for the whole salon to hear, I am MORTIFIED 😫 I’ve had this happen a few times now. I hate to have to ask them to quiet down, like please don’t put me in this position 😂😂
It’s not a question but do you think you can ever do some hair experiments !? Like- could you dye a wig with black box dye twice and then try to bleach it with store bought bleach and see what happens.😋 we kinda know what’s gonna happen but it’ll be fun to see and also educational
Not gonna lie ive done this myself and the outcome isn't the best yes it lightens it but not a lot you gotta do multiple bleaches it can leave your hair different shades if not applied very carefully your hair becomes dry and damaged the ends are fried definitely need a haircut afterwards
@@hayleykarschner7386 Yeah I didn't even go black...I just went brown and then purple...and now I have a blonde bob with "warm" ends and cool roots. It looks pretty good when it is freshly toned. As soon as the toner fades a little bit my ends look very warm/pinkish.
You helped me make the final decision to pursue cosmetology and as entertaining as these stories are they also help me know what to expect once I get to my advanced classes and start taking people on the floor. Thank you so much!!
I deal with thousands of clients nation wide and have learned that if you give them ANY rope they'll take a mile. The very first thing that should be said is "Thank you for your message. You are messaging a representative of an eyelash salon. Please direct this question to a nearby shelter for animals. Good luck!" Boom
Two hours?! Girrlll. I had a grown out balayage that was like over a year old and I’m naturally like a level 5 and I was going very icy and my color correct was done in one appointment and was about 5 hours long lol. I’m sorry but 2 hours is just not possible 😬

Yesss I love your story time videos!! I think boundaries are such an important thing to have in all relationships so I am proud of you for making them with your clients and not taking any bs! 🙌🏼 😊
how do you deal with messing up a haircut? ive been in and out of the beauty industry and recently got back into it and had a family member ask me to cut their hair but I totally messed up. They said it was okay and that hair grows back but I cant seem to get over my mistake. It's been a hard year for me in 2020 and I'm just trying to deal with everything
It is really rude not to show up for appointments, that’s why it’s so important to have a canceling/no show/late policy. Sadly people won’t take our time seriously unless there is one set in place. 🤷🏽 (No grey/purple hair shrugger lol)
I think sometimes like you mentioned clients may not have a "girl friend" that they can turn to or speak to. I had a client that got "comfy" with me and it's all good and dandy. THEN started texting me or DM'ing me about things NOT HAIR RELATED. As you mentioned, I'll answer when time permitted if I answered at all, especially if it wasn't hair related. Then one day about a month ago I recieved a a text from her and it stated "I got $45, what you got on my hair; I want it cut, highlights, etc" Ummmm, I professionally replied "I charge $32 for a haircut anything else would have to be via consultation." So I guess we all will have that one special cray-cray client and we'd just have to handle them as professionally as possible and keep it moving!

However, I'm not a fan of stylists that are aggressive about their appointments. (not saying you are) In your field of work you have to understand what you provide is a luxury. Sometimes people have to let go of their luxuries last minute. It's simply a part of being a stylist. Take the right precautions to protect yourself and your chair so you don't have to be aggressive with clients. If they dont show and they've already paid half their bill they will fire themselves and you can keep your reputation as an easy going stylist. Basically, always charge that 50% when they book!!
Honestly, the pandemic makes things really tricky right now. But you definitely want to make separate social media pages for your work and start connecting with people you know on there. Whenever you do someone's hair, ask if you can take before and after photos and ask them for their social media. Follow them, tag them in their hair pictures, and encourage them to repost the photos and shout you out to their followers. I was in the chair getting color and this woman in the cube next to me just went on for quite awhile about getting every part of her body lifted in detail. What a botch.😂 I doubt she was really doing what she said, either.
There needs to be a balance. When covid hit I was no longer aloud to bring my two children with me to my oldest's dentist appointment. So my baby sitter gets sick and I can't take her. They told me I owed them 50$ for not giving 48 hour notice, like wtf??? I never missed an appointment, how can I POSSIBLY control or forsee illness within 48 hours???
@@styledbysamvay yes Sam it's all about learning and having boundaries as you often say x if you ever come to Ireland your welcome in my salon much love xxx keep safe
Never say as soon as possible in a situation like canceling your hair appointment, because as soon as possible could be five minutes before the appointment.
Ugh, my aunt fosters animals, people who just expect you to take in new fosters on a whim are everywhere. She once had a person drop off a cat in a basket with ONE can of food. As if that'll last it or something. If she goes through the rescue groups she knows the animal's history and is provided with more supplies, including medical. If she has a spot open and can take a new animal she's going to go through the shelter, not take some random animal from some random person. That woman wanted to feel like a hero for saving that dog from the shelter, but she didn't want to actually care for it.
That's exactly how it is for my boss! People know she rescues animals, so they always think they can just dump them on her, as if she has nothing else going on in her life. And of course, she feels terrible turning an animal in need away, so she usually says yes out of guilt, even if it becomes a huge burden. It's really unfair. I totally agree with you that she wanted to feel like a hero.
Growing up we had a ton of cats. People would pull up in our driveway in the middle of the night and toss them out knowing we would feel bad and take care of them. Many were feral so of course we had an unintentional explosion of kittens come Spring. I am still a sucker to this day LOL I have adopted numerous fur/feather/scaly babies over the years.
2:03 The vagina is a very elastic muscle. It can stretch and go back to how it was, because it’s meant to do that. Just in case anyone wondered or has experienced worry about this type of thing before.
This sounds like half of my clientele (the part about being inappropriate and being loud for all to hear) 😩. I mean I love that people feel they can be so open with me ( and the rest of the salon apparently) but sometimes they can get a little vulgar which gets uncomfortable when the salon is full. And I’m too uncomfortable to ask them to tone it down 😂😩💀
Hi Sam ! Love your videos (: Question: for anyone who’s considering to start cosmetology school during this pandemic, would you suggest waiting another year or just continue to start ? I’m thinking about attending Paul Mitchell but they mentioned to me that due to Covid they are not allowing the students to take public clients and only work on doll heads as practice. As far as experience goes, do you think that it makes a big difference?
I got bright ass pink out with a simple bleach bath. My hair was pink for months and with one bleach bath it all came out and was a nice even blonde, minimal damage
Question for the next vlog: Have you ever tried wearing your hair natural? Do you not like your natural hair? You seem to have a really cute curl pattern, so I was just curious!
This was my me of the first things we talked about in school (hairstyling) of our client speaks about personal stuff we were told to re ederate the convo and we learnt like salon etiquette or w.e it’s called
Every state has their own regulations about things like dogs, alcohol, foods, etc sometimes it’s hard to remember everywhere is so different from another we can’t all know what state has what regulations that differ from our own local state board regulations. I wish the country was unanimous across the board on regulations too much confusion. Some states allow dogs, some don’t, some state boards allow salons to provide liquor/wine some states it’s illegal for a salon, some states have clothing/shoe regulations like no open toed shoes ever, testing is completely different from state to state as well as how many hours of cosmetology one has before you can take your boards, here in AZ we only need 1600 hours for beauty school where in Utah you have to have 2,000 hours of schooling before you can take your boards.
These people! I feel bad when I have to reschedule and I call a week ahead. I was once waiting in a dayspa waiting room and this place had a VERY strict, no children policy because well...it was supposed to be a quiet, relaxing experience for the other guests. A lady was freaking out because her two VERY young children couldn't hang out and play in the waiting room while she had an hour massage. As if the spa employees are now her baby sitters? If you can drop $120 on a massage, you can find a babysitter. Her scene made EVERYONE so uncomfortable.
That client should probably go back to that salon that supposedly did that for so cheap. I tell a client wanting something on the cheap, that I don’t do “cheap”, but quality work.
Hey Sam...I just finished a 6 month foundation course as a hairstylist a month ago..And was about to do some internship at a salon..How can I be confident and have faith in myself that I can do this?? And what can I expect when I start working on the floor?? Can you share some helpful tips??
You just have to go for it and fake the confidence in the beginning. It will come naturally with experience, but don't just wait until you feel confident before starting, because then you'll never start. Trust your training, and don't be afraid to stop and ask for help if you need it. No one starts out being perfect, and even stylists with years of experience mess up and/or doubt themselves every so often. Also remember that you WILL make mistakes, and that's ok. That's how you learn and grow.
Hi! My question is hair related. I have been blonde for quite a while now. I have an upcoming appointment with my hair stylist and I was wondering if I should let her know that I want to be a dimensiona brunette now? Not sure if it matters for her or if I should give her a heads up. Would appreciate your input! Thank you and love your content 🙏
Yes, anytime you want to change your appointment, you should definitely let your stylist know! I'm not sure what you usually go in for, but this could require a different amount of time, so it's really important to make sure you have the appropriate service booked.
I love your horror stories! You tell them so well. More of a serious question: how do you deal with feelings about not having done enough or being "behind" other people your age? I'm kinda in that boat and I'm only 21 so I'd love to hear your take on moving beyond those feelings.
I love it when people are like, oh this other places sells the same item for cheaper or this person performed a service for only x amount of dollars. Its like great, so then go to them and buy your item or get your service...
I hate that this happened to you 😩 but I love your client story times because they make me feel less alone as a hairstylist! I recently opened my own salon suite and have recently had to fire a few clients because it seems as if they take advantage of me having my own place now and show up whenever they want or don’t show up at all ! It’s so rude and frustrating but deposits and late fees / blocking them Definitely weeds out the flakes ! Unfortunately it’s something we will always encounter in this industry 🙃🥲
How do I get rid of a client when I work at a chain salon??? I don’t feel like it’s right for me just to be like, “no” but he’s been very creepy with me and I’m over it.
Find your voice and speak up for yourself. We ladies feel bad for telling to truth but if he is making you uncomfortable then you need to let it be known. Sexual harassment laws go both ways. Employers are obligated to stop that kind of behavior even if it is by a customer and not an employee. I had a similar issue when I worked at Walmart when I was a teen. This guy would come in every few days and follow me around my department or wait near my car when my shift was over. At first I just had co-workers walk me to my car. But one day he kind of cornered me and I had enough and told him I was going to press charges. I threw a huge fuss and managers came out to see what was going on. They escorted him out and banned him from the property. He came back another day and grabbed a fellow coworker by her arm and started dragging her to the exit. They arrested him. That is when HR told us that the harassment laws protected us from customers as well. So if your employer does not back you up and ban him then contact the EEOC or Free Legal Aide in your state.
Sometimes it's not so easy to just take a dog to a shelter. Some places have a waitlist. She could definitely take him to the vet to have them scan for a microchip.
Im a hairstylist as well, it amazes me when clients tell you oh this place did it, or tell u what to do. 1. Go to that stylist then! 2. Do you have a license?! Ugh so annoying and disrespectful
Exactly!!! Funny thing is, she went somewhere else, they couldn't give her the color she wanted, it took way longer and cost a lot more than what I originally quoted her.. and then after all that it was super uneven anyway.
People tell the person who answers the phone at their credit card company everything too, anything personal or medical, whatever. Gross. I don't need to know these things!
As soon as she talked about the other salon being faster and cheaper, then I would have suggested that she go to that salon! I get customers like that on my Etsy sometimes. "Can you make this crazy complicated piece for me?" "Sure, it'll cost $200 and take 3 weeks." "Omg! I know this other shop that has done custom work for only $50 and I got the item in a week!" "I'm sorry, but my prices are firm and I have other customers infront of you so I cannot go any faster. If you're in a hurry then I highly suggest you commission that other shop." "REEEEEEEE how dare you deny me! I'm going to tell all 30 of my followers what a horrible shop owner you are!!" Lol ok that last part was exaggerated a bit.
Client horror stories are entertaining because it's weird to know people like that exist out there meanwhile I have a hard time telling a hair stylist I hate what they did to my hair.
Omg same. I will say “oh yeah, I love it!” Through gritted teeth.

You have so much more patience then me 😂 I would’ve blocked her after the dog situation 🙃🤚🏻
@Natasha Warden this was 6 months ago…
How awkward would it be for her to book an appointment with a stylist who works right next to you?😬
Ugh, my aunt fosters animals, people who just expect you to take in new fosters on a whim are everywhere.
I love a good client story! ☕
So needed to watch this today girl! Love your videos
This sounds like half of my clientele (the part about being inappropriate and being loud for all to hear) 😩. I mean I love that people feel they can be so open with me ( and the rest of the salon apparently) but sometimes they can get a little vulgar which gets uncomfortable when the salon is full. And I’m too uncomfortable to ask them to tone it down 😂😩💀
So happy you’re doing Vlogmas! Your videos are great and I love watching you 💕
Thank you so much :)
Wow you are so patient, I would have stopped taking her messages
You trying to talk about what the client told you without being offensive is cracking my up 😂😂😂
Ahh.. this is awkward as hell.. God bless you girl
Good video I hope you have more of these , nice to be able to relate as a stylist to your client stories 🙏
You have INSANE clients!!😆
You should do a new hair critique video for vlogmas!!
Quarantine hair edition lol
This was my me of the first things we talked about in school (hairstyling) of our client speaks about personal stuff we were told to re ederate the convo and we learnt like salon etiquette or w.e it’s called
Did your salon have to get special permission with state board to be able to have the foster dogs? This would be so cool!!
Your sweatshirt is the cutest 😱😍❤️ also love your client stories🥰☕️
Thank you :)
Question- Do you wish you had gone to beauty school right out of high school, or do you feel like the timing was better since you waited?
@@styledbysamvay Oh..Thank you so much for the advice... I'll try my best 🙏
I love your videos, especially your client horror stories!!! Love your sweatshirt by the way💜😊
Thank you! :)
Exactly!
Ohhh girl the TEA on this one 😮
Omg where did you get your Sanderson sisters shirt?

I LOVE THESE so pumped to watch
I hate that this happened to you 😩 but I love your client story times because they make me feel less alone as a hairstylist! I recently opened my own salon suite and have recently had to fire a few clients because it seems as if they take advantage of me having my own place now and show up whenever they want or don’t show up at all ! It’s so rude and frustrating but deposits and late fees / blocking them Definitely weeds out the flakes ! Unfortunately it’s something we will always encounter in this industry 🙃🥲
Where did you get the base of the plant 🪴 you have on the background? Super Cute 🥰
So if your employer does not back you up and ban him then contact the EEOC or Free Legal Aide in your state.
happy vlogmas! this story is great ^_^
Lol glad you enjoyed it! Happy vlogmas!! :)
This is the video we didn’t know we needed omfggggggg this is the funniest thing ever “she wants to stay nice and tight” 😂😂😂😂😂
Sometimes it's not so easy to just take a dog to a shelter. Some places have a waitlist. She could definitely take him to the vet to have them scan for a microchip.
i feel bad the real owner of the dog, you can’t just take a dog and keep it at your house just bc you found it
Exactly. At least make an effort to find the owner - who could be in distress because they do not know where the dog is.
Love your videos so much! I’m a hairstylist too so I can relate to all of your content!
I feel sorry for this woman. Clearly, she has an issue with boundaries and priorities.
I’d have just been like Gurl we are a salon not a shelter, please only message me in regard to appointments 😂
"Can you make this crazy complicated piece for me?"
"Sure, it'll cost $200 and take 3 weeks."
"Omg! I know this other shop that has done custom work for only $50 and I got the item in a week!"
"I'm sorry, but my prices are firm and I have other customers infront of you so I cannot go any faster. If you're in a hurry then I highly suggest you commission that other shop."
"REEEEEEEE how dare you deny me! I'm going to tell all 30 of my followers what a horrible shop owner you are!!"
Lol ok that last part was exaggerated a bit.
You go Sam! We have to be firm and stand our ground ❤
where is the chair in front of your computer from?!😍
Target :)
I love these type of videos... Omg that girl sounds like drama! What a nightmare lol
I don’t know if this happens to anyone else but I feel like I have a sixth sense about people. I usually know when people are going to flake. Lol
I love the Hocus Pocus sweatshirt!
It's the hocus poccus sweater FOR MEEEEEE yesssss
People don’t realize that TIME IS MONEY. Don’t be inconsiderate of someone else’s.
