I feel like the best question my hairdresser asks me is “what do YOU see when you look at this picture?”

  • @mady7784

Consultation is key! In Cos school we spent so much time on how to have a successful consultation, what kind of questions to ask. Sometimes the client shows a picture and after some questions they actually want something completely different. That’s why consultation is so important!

Girl you’re GLOWINGGGG you look so damn good!!!!! And I love love these videos so much!! Another video I think would be great would be a best and worst products from Sally’s beauty supply. I go back and forth on what brand of dye I should try from there but I get nervous and just go with what I’m used to. I’d love to hear what you do and don’t recommend from there❤️

This is such a good idea. As a student rn we’re just told everything at Sally’s is bad! And I know that’s wrong bc they sell wella there which is a professional brand. I would love to know more

I feel for that first girl. I have such a hard time finding a stylist that continually communicates, I thought I had found one I liked but she stopped doing consultations completely and just started doing what she thought I wanted. The last straw was when I asked for some darker lowlights (and provided a pic of hair that was similar to Alessandra ambrosio back in the day, basically brown highlighted hair) and she did a purple/red reverse balayage…..

been seeing the same stylist since i was in middle school and she always points out when my hair didn't take correctly. she will spend hours correcting or she will have me come back. I'm very grateful to have a stylist who treats me like family!!

I was cringing so hard listening to the first story 😖I’ve been there!! My mom is a hair stylist so my first experience going to an actual salon was in my mid twenties and I had no idea what to ask for/how to be specific and clear in the consultation. I walked out dazed and confused, almost fully blonde up to the root! My hair is naturally a 5 😩

That first story is the reason why I do my hair coloring myself. Learned how to do all the basics myself after watching many UA-cam videos, and incredibly, my hair is doing and looking MUCH better than when I used to go to any hair salon. I only go there for an inch trim, straight across my length, every 3 months, and still I need to be hyper aware that they aren’t over cutting, or over/under blending my ends, because even a super basic cut can be a nightmare. I’m severely traumatized with any stylist after my scalp have been burned with bleach, hair turned orange, hair cut too short so many times, applied the wrong all over color, etc. and then having horrible responses from all of those hair stylists which usually don’t take any responsibility, regardless of always being a good tipper. Each time I’ve been very clear and upfront with what a want, have reasonable expectations/understand the process (I have dark hair), and I’m a good tipper. I understand there are many bad customers out there, with impossible expectations or too picky, but I have always pride myself of not being one of those people, and STILL most of my experiences with hair stylists have been negative in one way or another, to say the least.
There is nothing I hate more now than going to the hair salon. I really wish I could find someone responsible and with a good work ethic, but unfortunately I realized that’s too much to ask for.

    • @lt.2992

Being a good tipper is a very American concept. Tips should be made as a gift not necessarily expecting anything back from people.

This first story makes me think of what a lot of my former clients came to me saying something similar had happened to them. Small town older stylists that can do fine basic highlights, but anything more they act like they can do it but don’t actually know the more advanced techniques. So they do lots of work but the results aren’t good, and they don’t understand exactly what you’re wanting because they don’t do “root smudges” “balayage” so they don’t really know what you’re describing.

MULTIPLE times different hairstylists have accidentally turned my hair purple or blue when I just wanted blonde. Twice it was kind of my fault for saying I wanted lavender or an ashy blonde, though. But the last time I got it done professionally I said I don’t want any ash blonde but the stylist insisted on still mixing some in with a neutral blonde. And sure enough when I got home I noticed it had a tint of blue that I didn’t want, but it did wash away in a few days. The next time I get my hair blonde professionally I will stand my ground in just getting a neutral blonde toner.

Hey Sam! What a sad story! I'm so very sad for this poor girl and any one who has had this type of experience. I have had a similar experience. 15 yrs with a stylist to leave the same way. It took me yrs to get the courage to try again. I know we hold emotional attachment to hair. But realizing how blessed we are to have hair and some people don't have hair..understanding It's just hair and it grows back.. I tried again.. I got this way because all mine fell out from treatment😜 so now I realize I'm beautiful with or without it!💛✨ life is short.. Try again!💛

The second one sounds like the stylist saw a pretty client and decided to turn her into a hair model. If she posted it on her instagram with that caption it might be something she considers trendy or something people have been asking her for, and she wanted a good example pic.
I do think it looks nice, but like you said it's not what she asked for.

Horror stories like these are one of the reasons why I never get chemical services and just stick with virgin hair. I had blonde highlights twice in my life and both times it took FOUR YEARS to get my hair 100% virgin again (it took that long to grow/cut it out because I did it gradually to keep my length).

I have hard time understanding why some women are too afraid to voice their concerns at the hairdresser. If I didn't wish for a haircut there is no way I will let someone cut my hair. It seems like it happens a lot and it puzzles me! :D

back in December of last year I decided to go back to getting my hair highlighted so the during the process the stylist was really nice and we talked the entire time she was coloring my hair when the color didn’t turn out like the picture I was still ok with it. She asked to fix my uneven layers in my hair so i told her yes thank you . After that she dried my hair but didn’t style it or ask me if I would like it styled so I didn’t say anything then when my man paid for my hair service we both asked what kind of products should I use for my hair since it became really dry after she said any mask would do seemed to be in a hurry to get paid and take the next customer, she didn’t ask if I would like to set up a future appointment.. 😢

This is really sad ! I don’t understand why the price was not discussed during the consult.
I also don’t understand why she would rush the end and not ask “how are you feeling with your hair” seen as she was changing it up so much 🥺
    I just don’t understand

If we feel a consultation is going poorly. Do we cancel the appointment? Do we still need to pay for it?

    • @styledbysamvay
      @styledbysamvay  2 роки тому +2

It varies and depends on the stylist's/salon's cancellation policy. But in most cases, yes, if you walk out at the beginning of your appointment, you will probably be charged some type of fee. That's why it's best to just book a stand alone consultation before the actual color appointment, if possible.
