    The official Steam Deck Dock is a great product. It's the only Dock that allowed my Steam Deck to use VRR and HDR with my external Samsung Oled Monitor. On other docks either the VRR is not working or the HDR is not detected.
    I had zero issues with updates for the Dock. The only connectivity issue is sometime after I resume from Sleep my monitor isn't detecting the Dock so I have the replug the HDMI cable.

      @@DeckReady I ordered my Steam Dock on the 25th December (I know my Xmas present for 2024 as the Steam Deck Oled was my Xmas present for 2023 - I wanted the Steam Deck to be a Xmas thing to remind me of when I was a kid ^_^) and I received it on the 30th of December 2024. Out of the box, it wanted an update which I did. I then hooked it up with my Samsung Oled G9 as well as with a Keyboard and wired mouse and I even plugged in a spare PS4 controller. I haven't tried the LAN yet. In comparison with another dongle that I have, the Dock allowed me to use VRR and HDR and 2560x140@120Hz all at once. The other dongle doesn't let me more than 1440p@60hz, no VRR and no HDR. I have been using the steam Dock for 2 weeks now both the play games (1080p upscaled for better performance than 1440p) and Desktop mode. So far, rock solid, except for the sometimes annoying sleep issue that I said above.

    • @ilazki_
      @ilazki_ 14 днів тому +1

      Something else that potentially makes it worthwhile is it actually allows use of multiple displays. Most (if not all) docks from other makers will let you use either the HDMI or DP output, but not both, so if you want to use it for desktop mode, it's potentially a better option. Kind of a niche use, but worth keeping in mind when deciding whether to go cheaper or not.

    Microsoft is spiraling toward irrelevance in the consumer PC space. Want a good productivity machine? Get a Mac. Gaming machine? Console or SteamOS/Linux box.
    Most consumers don’t have software that has to run on Windows anymore (save for the few games with anti-cheat, but you can play those on a PlayStation or Xbox).
    Windows will just be the boring OS for legacy large corporate worlds

    I started out as a PC gamer (in the 90’s), but also on NES & Gameboy, moving to PS1, PS2, then moved to Xbox through 360, to One, One X & Series X. So majority of my library (& beloved Gamerscore) is in the Xbox ecosystem. But I recently bought an OLED SteamDeck and have been loving it.

      I think gamepass is also a double edged sword for them... On the one hand it's a great deal and many people pay for it. But on the other hand... I have quite the collection of games in my Xbox library, but it barely grew since gamepass came out. I don't necessarily need most games right at launch, almost always only buy once they're deeply discounted, but on Xbox that was replaced by just play whatever is in gamepass. But that means that after a few years, almost all of the games in my Xbox library that I own are really old while my steam library kept getting stronger (I've always kind of jumped between Xbox and PC). So there's less and less tying me to Microsoft's ecosystem and more and more to Valve's. I sometimes stream gamepass games from my xsx to my steam deck and other than that it is never used anymore.

      But to answer the question I think you're asking: it depends. If you're thinking about replacing Windows, it doesn't hurt to check for each and every one of the controllers you plan on using, but almost all of them will work out of the box. If you have niche stuff like a steering wheel is when you'll probably start seeing issues, maybe needing extra configuration, etc.

    Personally, I'd say that Microsoft dropped the ball back when that windows handheld mode was leaked as an internal concept. They saw how much hype it generated, saw how many handheld PC's have released, and still did not capitalize on that attention. And only now, when they're pressured by the potential mass exodus away from Windows, do they decide that this is something to invest in. Obviously, I can't say for certain that they haven't been working on something to compete with Steam, but marketing, and communication with their fan base, plays a big part in whether or not it's successful. Them speaking on releasing a handheld compatible or an Xbox OS for windows PC's comes off as a knee jerk reaction or an attempt to quell hype for SteamOS.

    My only guess is that you are using the official steam deck dock with the ROG ally, dock delivers 45W power, not 65W like the ally requires. And a laptop requires 100W PD; i think you are lucky you didn't have a fire happen from trying to draw more power than it was capable of. If you have a dock from valve that drops out all the time you must have a bad unit, and you don't have to unplug anything from it for doing firmware updates either. I've had one from the beginning where i have my hub, hotas, keyboard, mouse, ethernet etc all plugged in and have never had to unplug anything for any of the firmware updates. The ONLY issue i've had is that the official dock can get a bit overheated and drop video output.

    I'm looking to replace my Xbox with a steam deck or a steamos handheld maybe even that new one that is just coming out but my question is I have an Xbox series x but I really only need Xbox series s graphics I'm not that much into all that but will steam deck be equal to that?? Also wanted to know does the steamos have any ads? That's one reason I'm leaving the Xbox I'm tired of the crazy ads after paying all that money and I don't want to pay a monthly fee to play online. But is it reasonable to plug one of these handhelds into my TV and expect a decent quality of gaming???

    If they can get SteamOS ready before Windows 10 hits End of Life in October they could have a real winner on their hands because as of December 63% of Windows users are still on Windows 10 and only 34% on Windows 11 which I don't want to waste me time with. I could see a large portion of that 63% just skipping Win 11 and going to something new *if* it is user friendly enough.

    My major problem with Steam OS is If you want to go beyond using it like a console gamer you have to be a Linux nerd. Installing mods and doing anything outside of Steam OS is a giant pain in the ass. Windows is much more user-friendly in that regard. So I guess the worst part about Steam OS is Linux itself.

    • @hcolider2817
      @hcolider2817 13 днів тому

      It's not as hard as you think to install mods; given that there's no workshop to just instantly install stuff, once you know how to quickly access the local files for the games, it becomes very similar to how it's done on windows. Only difference is the steam proton layer adds a level of complexity that you have to work around, since installs are treated like a windows install within the steam directory.

      Steam deck just a tool for a gate way to show how good steam os is, as long people find use of the steam deck won't be obsolete anytime soon if become cheaper over time and plays so many games still. It does make it Linux keep windows in check not to beat it's just keep it in check so microsoft does better. If valve drops a steam deck 2 it's to keep other handhelds in check not to price out people out the market, that can hurt valve if people can't buy handware to play steam games.

    I bought 2 Razer Naga's back in the day when I was playing WoW. They were the most expensive mice I've ever bought. Both of them broke in multiple ways in 1-2 years. Even after the first one broke and they came out with a new model that had mechanical side buttons, they fixed no issues with it, and still the scroll wheel broke almost immediately and started double/triple clicking. And get this, the right mouse button quickly wore away, and then snapped off. Razer uses the cheapest, most garbage materials and charges a premium for them.
    I bought a cheap knockoff with 12 buttons on the side like the Naga about 5 years ago. I am still using it to this day with zero problems. Razer has absolutely earned their reputation for having terrible products and customer service. They sold me garbage for an insane price and refused to replace it for me. They deserve no good will whatsoever.

    Steam does not care at all if Microsoft is releasing their own portable gaming console, they are actually probably happy because that device will probably need Steam OS or at least some compatibility with the Steam shop, otherwise this console would be one of the only few ones without access to the steam shop, and that would make it one of the worst options out there, thus Steam probably happy they are expanding their market inside a Microsoft portable console

    I totally get your apprehension but you’re not understanding key point here, the Xbox operating system IS Windows. They’re not two separate things. It’s just Windows that’s modified in a way that takes out all the aspects you don’t need for a game console. There’s no reason to believe they can’t do the same thing for a small set of 3rd party handhelds.

    so heres my thing. we need a gaming optimized windows OS.... I think thats whats required for them to be competitive. windows is bloated so it always feels like you need a much more powerful device to get a good windows experience. and at the lower spec experience, the consoles and steamOS doing a better job. (I know some ppl can maximize budget builds, to be console competitive, but imagine how that goes when we get the full SteamOS release that possibly optimizes those builds further). anyways, Im up for innovation.

    That said, for any games that work well in SteamOS, I’d prefer to stay on SteamOS. I can only hope that Microsoft adds a handheld mode to Windows 11 kind of like their tablet mode. That way it’s just a part of the OS so I could dual boot my Steam Deck with a more handheld friendly Windows OS. Win Win
