I'm really glad you've done this vid Phil, I've been banging on about lack of opacity in ALL our paints for the last few years to anyone who'll listen! The manufacturers are being ham strung by the big environmental green dream and we're not only paying for it but we're suffering a lack of quality in what we're actually paying for. I packed Dulux in years ago as they seemed to be the worst offenders although I did use an o/b undercoat and gloss a few weeks ago that the client was insistent on supplying. It was truly awful, terrible opacity and dried too quickly so I struggled going back over it to lay it off. It dried like a pastic-y finish and although the customer was deliriously happy, I wasn't. Like yourself, I moved over to Tik after trying so many different brands. I have accepted though, that woodwork is now a 3 coat system minimum and price in for it. As soon as I've finished my massive vat of everall aqua I'm going to give the Benjamin Moore a go. Thanks Phil. 👍
First reaction to Diamond Satinwood was that it was nasty, then as it dried I noticed how well it settled, melting brush strokes away. It does go on with difficulty compared to other paints & needs more coats but after about 4 coats, I love the smooth finish thanks to how it settles. I’m not a pro, so I can take as long as I want, and this will be my go-to for wood now.
Hi phil, great honest review, i dont think you have done a review yet of Caparol Haftprimer, and Caparol PU Satin, also the decorators forum say great thi gs about WRX satin which is also waterbased, i would love to know what you think of these, and correct me if im wrong but is the Tikkurilla intact 40 a realative new product from tikkurilla, also heard some good things about this, if you have not done a video on these 3, i would love to see it, keep up the good work mate.
Hi. They've not been in touch yet lol Intact 40 I used years ago when it first came out, the day after it's release. I tried it out on all the woodwork and bedroom furniture in my own bedroom. Sprayed using HVLP.. had no issues. I believe they've altered it? This video I use the original intact 40.. further on in the video.. have you seen it? ua-cam.com/video/CjmsvQtI1wg/v-deo.html
Have to say that Haftprimer is some bloody good gear. Like an old fashioned o/b undercoat when sanding back, just beautiful. I've also recently tried the Caparol NAST in my HVLP and it does reduce overspray considerably. I'm yet to try the PU Satin but have a can on the van ready to go!
Glad you’ve done this review mate. I’ve recently done my HSL in diamond satinwood over yellowed Dulux oil based satinwood. Like you I tested it without an undercoat first…. Found you could still see through it even after two. Looked a little grinny. I then applied the undercoat first… then two diamond satinwood coats over the top…. Solid white. Really is best with the undercoat to give it the opacity. I did roller my doors to be fair which when thinned out a tad did help massively. Used two fussy blokes short pile roller. Finish is superb… but I will whole heartedly agree with you using the diamond satinwood straight over yellowed or bold colours is a bit crap. Thanks for your video mate! I need to try scuff x
Hi,tnx.... so three coats work then.... if it's three coats, have you tried Isomat Isolac Satin. Try that.... lovely finish. Next week... some more Dulux reviews!
I have used the Diamond Satinwood for a few years. I find I have to be very careful as it can run very easily, so I tend to put it on thin, make sure the brush marks lay off and then just leave it. I use Purdy Monarch Elite brushes which did improve it, but can still be caught out by the runniness of the paint. I may well try the BM stuff and see if it's less of a technique to get it on nice and flat.
Hi Phil. I use the Dulux diamond satinwood when clients want a WB finish. I ve used it over old oil but I apply a coat of the Dulux quick dry undercoat on then two coats. On new wood I’ve applied one primer, filled, caulked, then second primer then two coats diamond satinwood. I can’t say I have a problem with it. I tend to use a Staalmeester sash brush and a Staalmeester 4inch roller for applying. No issues , turns out nice.
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator can looks wank lol. Seriously though I ve never tried the gear. But this term “ soft satin “ does it mean its a lower sheen or that it’s not very durable Phil ?

Hi Phil, great work mate. Quick question. I’ve just brought my first home and wanted to paint the doors. I seen a video of yours Johnstone’s satin, which you recommended. Out these two which would be best. I know there is a huge price difference but was they similar ?
Do you mean Aquagaurd? You may struggle with that if you're not used to painting... It does run on you. Look for something easy to apply. Dulux Heritage eggshell Bedec MSP Or even the H&G acrylic satin paint I've just done a video on.
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator hi Phil it was the Johnstone’s aqua system. Only reason I suggested the diamonds satin from Dulux is because my Neigbour is selling them me for £25 a Tin for 2.5l but after seeing the video it looks like it not good at all.
I’ve used the dulux diamond satin wood for the last couple of years, never given it 6hrs between coats, 2 hrs max, I did find it needed a really good mix as whatever it’s made up of will separate over time. I’ve recently converted to scuffx satin for my wood work and don’t think I’ll be using anything else. I’m in the middle of painting some high traffic areas in a school and I’m using the scuffx eggshell. The coverage and finish is far superior to anything I’ve used to date. Another guy I was working with who was painting some other rooms in the johnstones durable Matt said my area/work was another level so definitely noticeable. To me the cost weighs up ok as less coats, covers better, easier to work with and unparalleled finish. If it performs as it says then I’ll be very happy.
Hey Phil, another great vid. Thanks. I having been looking for a two coat satin finish for a while.(no undercoating) I did quite like Diamond satinwood only because it did give a hard finish. It passed the scratch test. But I agree it's not the best for application. I tried the Everal aqua 40 and the zinseer interior satin. I loved the way they went on BUT neither passed the scratch test(two topcoats, no undercoat.) So are you saying the best two out there right now in your opinion are the Benjamin Moore scuffx and the Bedex MSP? What do you actually use on a job right now?
hi. the BM scuffX, it's the first time in trying it.. as you saw. Yes very good. Almost fully covered over the black.... so would need a 3rd for me to be 100%. If looking at three coats.. most stuff won't cover dark colours.. so we're back to square one lol At the moment... using the Isolac aqua Satin (primer and two top coats) also usingteh Bedec Aqua Advanced satin.. Uc and two top coats. On an outside we've used two coats of Bedec MSP.. soft Gloss & the soft Satin (white and also black) very impressed. Used that over AllCoat exterior!!
You sprayed the emulsion on ceiling and walls with HVLP? I've brushes the PermaWhite mould paint in satin and Matt finish. I find the Matt covers better. It's a good finish too, doesn't show brush marks like other paints can.
I’m far from a professional decorator but I’ve done my fair share having worked in bespoke furniture manufacturing for the best part of a decade. Hi. Thanks for asking.... Safe option.... Zinsser PermaWhite mould paint, brilliant in bathrooms and kitchens. They do a Matt finish that goes on beautiful and leaves next to no brush marks.
Front door , white colour ! 2 coats with Dulux quick dry satin . Looks horrible. Brush marks , etc ! What paint can I put on top to have a nice smooth finish ? Not very glossy
Sand it back down. Apply a coat of Caparol Haftprimer. Then two coats of Caparol Pu Satin.. or gloss, which softens off to a nice more shiny satin finish. The only Dulux paint worth anything is Heritage. I say that only for the application side of things. I don’t rate it for durability. With regards to Satinwood, WRX goes on like dream. Ridiculous flow rate and quick drying. The biggest problem with it is the sheen level is too high. Reckon I’ll be giving Scuff X a go next.
Ive been looking at the scuff x for some time, i think after your review iam going to try it, and the isomat satin you've mentioned in these comments. Keep upthe good work phil.
Besides Scuff X coverage being better than Dulux there are loads more benefits besides. It seems to go further than any other paint.1 tin will last you for several jobs. 1 average room maybe £15's worth. It seems to stick to the brush like glue and never drips.I often paint skirtings and door frames without any covers on carpets. Its also not a brush killer after cleaning up like some paints. Finally it gives a lovelly smooth finish . I think Dulux diamond satinwood will have to go into room 101. Not all Dulux is bad though.Easycare is my go to for all walls. If someone want a quick cheap job done then I'll use Dulux Once oil paint.
Hassle l had with Dulux diamond satinwood unbelievable.. coverage terrible, small tear runs just seem to appear you sand slightly and it lifts it. A nitemare product the Amstead QD satin better to apply drys far quicker. WRX satin pretty good
Agree mate, all Dulux Trade stuff is up there with the most expensive gear. Add to that the additional labour cost in putting on extra coats to make it cover and it makes no sense. I think the trade should boycott Dulux until they sort out their game!
I have been a painter and decorator for 13 years and I think Dulux trade Oil is great , but that diamond Dulux trade water-based is rubbish to be honest I was thinking about taking It back thought it’s was lacking in thickness how could you use this to paint a whole house are used a quick drying undercoat and put three coats on some skirting boards rubbish if get it again I’ll just say I’ll do the walls 😂
Can't remember the last time I used oil based paint.... Give the heritage eggshell (wb) a go, that's good. And try the Dulux QD gloss as well, the gloss is very good. Have you tried any other brands? Isomat or Bedec?
Dulux to be honest is utter rubbish BUT u do love the heritage paint it's fantastic. Have you done a video on aqua guard? That I found was great stuff matey.
Dulux is so bad now days. Ive not tried their heritage products yet I'm starting to wonder if they've deliberately made their main trade pain worse to bring out something called heritage(which is probably the old trade paint). Probably just a big con
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator yeah I think it’s a marketing thing. Selling the existing paint as a premium paint then deliberately making the existing paint worse I guess that’s business
Water based paints are rubbish they never cover and u definitely can’t cut in with them! so u are better off doing woodwork first then taping up with frog tape u really can’t go wrong and it’s quicker when u can just smash the woodwork in rather than try to cut it in

Dulux recoat times on WB paints is one reason I do not use them.
they are ridiculous, you can put up with 4 hours, like with tikkurila.. but 6 hours is silly
Love your videos mate think they are brill 😊😊
Thank you. I try my best lol
Interesting.. heritage Eggshell video is a week on Monday. Tell me what you think to my thoughts then.
Ive been looking at the scuff x for some time, i think after your review iam going to try it, and the isomat satin you've mentioned in these comments. Keep upthe good work phil.
Hope you enjoy it!
Have you seen the Isomat videos yet?
The bedec satin is great too.
do you spray or brush?
Dulux Easycare, that's a retail paint. The trade version will be diamond matt emulsion I think?
Needs thinning down for best results
Hassle l had with Dulux diamond satinwood unbelievable.. coverage terrible, small tear runs just seem to appear you sand slightly and it lifts it. A nitemare product the Amstead QD satin better to apply drys far quicker. WRX satin pretty good
Cheers.
Was my review about right then?
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Totally its a wonder Dulux Trade put their name to this
I’m not a fan I tried it a couple of years ago and price wise is up there with the most expensive paints
Worst paint I have ever used mate! Thanks for the review.
Dulux flashing it's a nightmare. Tiki stuff is brilliant. Then Benjamin gear I've never used. But the price puts customers off.
if you price the paint into your quote, the customer won't know how much the 'materials' are in the price. Labour costs outweigh material costs :)
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator I'll give it go 👍 hassle free is what u want.
Scuff x is the governor
have you tried teh DULUX?
Dulux to be honest is utter rubbish BUT u do love the heritage paint it's fantastic. Have you done a video on aqua guard? That I found was great stuff matey.
I will check it out
Dulux is so bad now days. Ive not tried their heritage products yet I'm starting to wonder if they've deliberately made their main trade pain worse to bring out something called heritage(which is probably the old trade paint). Probably just a big con
Heritage is good, that review will be a week on Monday ;) press the subscribe Bell, so you don't miss is.
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator yeah I think it’s a marketing thing. Selling the existing paint as a premium paint then deliberately making the existing paint worse I guess that’s business
Number 89 Phil , jf
Awful gear this haha try cutting in with it, it fights you all the way. but it made me find bedec aqua advanced which is my go to.
Are you 'avin a laff? ☛ Is he 'avin a laaff?
Painting in the sun will make it dry far quicker. An honest review would be comparing apples to apples conditions. :-)
Tad Creepy Guy.
is he on Beetlejuice?
Water based paints are rubbish they never cover and u definitely can’t cut in with them! so u are better off doing woodwork first then taping up with frog tape u really can’t go wrong and it’s quicker when u can just smash the woodwork in rather than try to cut it in
Have you tried the isomat satin?
That's nice to cut in with.
Yes, my preferred method wack in woodwork then tape up before doing walls, much more relaxing way
Some Belta waterborne paint on the market now mate
@@beecee6850 bollox
I find if you're having issues cutting in with w/b, just a drop of water in it until it flows a bit better.
