  • Outside of Shreveport, Louisiana sits the entire village that was built for the 2014-2017 TV series SALEM. This show was based on the real Salem witch trials in the late 1600s. The town was built in 2 months solely for production of this series and was abandoned after the show was cancelled. These past few years have not been kind to this place.

i was a extra on 3 episodes of salem. lots of fun walking around in this set. very accurate depiction of 17th century life. the costumes were authentic and very uncomfortable. the costume guy was kind of strict about how we were dressed. after costuming out we were coated with "movie dirt" because people back then were no supposed to be really into cleanliness ....i was a "townsfolk" in two episodes and was a "guardsman" in one episode. can be seen briefly in the witch hanging scene.......we filmed in all weather...snow , sleet, rain.

This is a beautifully done video! Thank you for posting this walk down memory lane. My husband and I worked as extras on this show, and we met some of our favorite people there. The hours were long and grueling, but it was magical working on that set in the beginning. For the pilot, we wore Joseph Porro's costumes (Joseph also did the costumes for Tombstone, which also starred Stephen Lang - affectionately known as "Slang") - and they were spectacular. For the actual seasons, the clothes were cheaper and uncomfortable, particularly the shoes. After the first season aired, I chose not to continue, but my husband worked as a townsperson, a militiaman and one of the men in black at the gallows (can't remember what they called them).
There were some buildings that had portions where we filmed inside, but most of the interior shots were filmed on a sound stage in downtown Shreveport. It was always a treat to get to work on the soundstage - better crafty snacks, shorter hours!
This set was an hour's drive south of Shreveport to Grand Cane to park, then a bus ride to the set - often in the wee hours of the morning, and sometimes not getting to go home until very, very late at night. The property is privately owned so it's not accessible anymore. Several strong storms damaged the buildings, but they weren't meant to last. The church interior was pretty cool, and we often were given refreshments there on break. Some of the actors were more accessible than others - and when Stephen Lang and Xander Berkeley were there, it uppped everybody's game. I'm in the scene here where they're dunking the "witch"....one of many faces!

    • @AmeliaBlakeMusic

Also, the church's interior was finished out, and we filmed quite a few scenes there.

Probably not worth all the work. You’d have to get permits, spend money to maintain the buildings, build a parking lot, build bathrooms for the guests, hire employees, advertise, etc. And at the end of the day, how many people are gonna drive all the way there and spend that money? Probably not enough to support it.

This is so neat to see. We would never have seen this if you hadn’t made it possible.
I don’t understand how those movie places are allowed to build this stuff and then just leave it to turn to rubble. That’s not good for our Environment. The lake or river is right there. It could be a nice area and they are allowed to let it just waste away and litter the area. They should have to take it down and dispose of it properly. They make enough money

Its possible the set could be re-used for other future projects, like another TV show (where an episode needs a period setting like this) or a feature film. Aside from that, apparently it was not in the show producer's contractual agreement that after the show ends, they must demolish the set and restore the area back to its original condition.

Originally, he only specified that the church and the main houses be left, but it looks like he decided to keep it all. The lake is his, as well. Al S is right about the termites. The outer part was built as mainly facades so that they could house equipment, but they were structurally sound. That area gets tornados occasionally and that's probably what happened to the outer buildings by the lake. The inner structures, including the church, was sturdier and were build to withstand high winds.

Thanks for the video. I was a big fan of the show mostly because of Janet Montgomery and I am a direct descendant of the puritans who founded Salem in the early 1600s. Simon and Anne Bradstreet are two of my grandparents who lived in Salem. Anne is known as the first American poet and Simon was appointed Governor of Massachusetts twice by the Queen. He was an amazing man who outlived all of his children and lived to be 93. I have posted videos of both of their grave sites here on youtube.

Been on a few studio construction sites and the materials that are used for those buildings is super cheap. Most of the exterior wood is either 1/8 inch sheets of plywood or 1/8 inch luan board. Most of the details you see on camera, like block and brick work are usually just painted on to the surface. They just are not meant to last very long and they break down from weathering very easy. 10 years from now, nothing will be left of this place.

      vaylon1701
      Oh, too bad.
I was watching a “making of” analysis video of 1976’s “Logan’s Run” with Michael York. Once the left the “City of Domes” set, they were able to save a ton of money simply reusing old sets from other movies! Only, back in those days, from 1920-70, sets were built almost as sturdy as normal houses. One reason they adopted the techniques you mentioned is that sets simply didn’t get reused as often as they originally thought and by 1974, many studio backlots had leftovers fifty years old! By 1980, they finally got serious about junking most of them and not making them any more sturdy from now on than has been absolutely necessary.
Still, for post apocalyptic scenes, those old, dilapidated structures were PERFECT. The sets needed no touch ups, they were perfect as they were found. But the one that really stood out to me were the scenes in the senate house, when it was revealed that it was the same set used in “Mr Smith goes to Washington”! I love both movies, different as they are. It was a perfect replica of the real senate seat, which they had not been allowed to use. I’m surprised it hadn’t been used in any other political dramas between 1941-1976, but instead left to rot. But it wasn’t TOO rotten, showing how tough the old sets were compared to today.

In the area of the poor section where a well is, I noticed the ground is cobble stone. I'm surprised they didn't think of bidding material/wood/door knobs/etc off.

I love those pine trees around the town. The nature looks so mysterious there, i think it made a lot for the atmosphere of Salem show. Actually a lot of things were great about it, interesting script, amazing actors, costume design; it was dramatic and scary but funny at the same time.. Really good tv series.

I've been to the real House of Seven Gables a few times. Salam Mass is a beautiful very interesting place. The witch hysteria actually started in the Salem Village which is now Danvers, Mass. It's next to modern Salem. I've also been to the Witch House in Salem too. That is the Johnathan Corwin House. He was a judge during the witch trials. There are other 17th century houses in Salem too. It's really something to tour a real house built in the late 1600's.

I worked as a scenic artist in the film industry for many years, and there is so much work that goes into a production that is never even seen. You put your heart and soul into a set only to watch it become discarded as soon as the cameras are gone. You can’t get too attached to anything because it’s an industry that sucks the life out of you, and the people that do all the work as just as easily discarded as the scenery.

I remember the TV series, saw all of them till the end. I would have loved to see the inside of these buildings. They should allow visitors, pay a fee for a guided tour. They probably worried their set might be damaged by vandals.
Thank you so much for your Drone tour. I would have tried getting closer to the windows to see inside. Especially that open kept door. 😁💕

WOW...I just discovered this video. I am a AVID fan of that series. Seeing this was a real thrill. It's a shame to see that set allowed to deteriorate. It had (in my opinion) point of interest or even theme park potential. Your drone work provided excellent cinematography. I did feel as if I were walking through the grounds. Now I am inspired to (once again) watch the series. Thanks very much for this documentary. :D

The sad truth about these film sets, even if they're in studios, is that they are only built with enough materials and effort, just to get the shot for the shoot. That's all that matters in production, is that the studio will only put enough money to get what is on film, nothing else matters.
That's also why many of these buildings are entirely empty inside, because it would make filming easier, for cameras and equipment, if their interiors were inside studios where it would be easier to film insides of buildings.
So once production is finished, it may be cheaper for the production just to abandon a set entirely to nature, rather than invest more money to tear it down. That's why so many are not fit to become tourist attractions, simply because they were never built to last.
A notable exception to this, was when Peter Jackson did the Hobbit movies, they rebuilt Hobbiton in New Zealand, with permanent materials specifically so that it could have a life, beyond the movie shoot. Most movies and TV shows don't have the budget for these long term goals.
