I found an article that said Todd Domboski (the boy who was swallowed by the hole) died a couple years ago at 53. Sadly, he had drug issues and apparently had ongoing nightmares after the incident.
I've driven through this town...twice. Once in 1991 while returning from a family vacation when I was 15. We drove on the graffiti highway, a few years before the state of Pennsylvania closed it down in the mid 90s and built the bypass on route 61. Second time was when I was on a business trip near Frackville in 2016, and did a drive-thru tour to see whatever was left. Also, as an update, the boy (Todd Domboski) who fell into the hole passed away a few years ago.
Nicely done. I remember going through Centralia in the 1980’s on route 61, seeing the vent pipes and all. I also recall this story made national news. But I haven’t been up that way in almost 20 years. It’s a bygone era. People from central Pennsylvania like to stay in the towns they grew up in and then continue that legacy raising families of their own. It’s a shame for them because this catastrophe, really, ended that for the townsfolk. The movie _The Town that Was_ is a good documentary capturing the history of the fire.
That's an urban legend. Roger Avary used this place as an inspiration when writing the film Silent Hill (2006) and it has nothing to do with the original games.
I've made a number of videos on Centralia. I live 45 minutes from Centralia and have followed the disaster since I was 6 years old. I'm 53 now, and when I go to Centralia, I recollect what the town was and is, and I still feel my heart break, every time.

A former Pennsylvanian, I well remember the news about this fire. We had a priest in my home parish who was from there, and had family there. I saw your initial video on Centralia, Chris, and now this. You do such a terrific job of bringing us these interesting stories. Thanks!
Solid vid. Gotta say that if I had $1 for every Centralia vid on YT I could have a nice steak dinner and a night of drinking. My Grandparents are buried in Centralia. I used to hang out there as a kid, when it was still a living community. I had friends who lived there. There was bar (one of many) on the main street run by a sweet old lady who would sell us beer when we were about 15, lol. We played football in a big empty lot. It was a friendly little coal region town. Btw, you didn't mentioned the 1991 film Nothing but Trouble, written and directed by Dan Akroyd. Supposedly, Akroyd drove through Centralia late one night and that gave him the idea for the town in his film.
Sorry for your losses, I have a little to add myself but, I had no idea nothing but trouble is about or tied to Centralia. That is one off the wall movie! I often wondered what kind of drugs those writers were on. 😅

I had read not too long ago that the nearby strip mine spoil tip was the cause of the fire underground in the tunnels. Not the original story of a burning dumpsite. It was also a huge loss to nearby Byrnesville, which no longer exists. They completely raised that town expecting the fire to spread. Thanks for revisiting such a beloved site. I worked in Ashland PA for 8 years from 1980 to 1988 and traveled through Centralia everyday on my way to work. Knowing first hand residents, fellow employees and friends evoke memories that I will always remember. Thanks Jay for another great video!!!

My friends and I took a trip across state from to Pittsburgh to see the town. At the time, the only person left there was the mayor. Sadly, he passed away. Great experience, just be careful navigating around. The old fire station and church on the hill is amazing!
I live 10 minutes from Centralia and grandparents grew up in this town so I always heard stories. This is the most informative video I've watched so far about this town. Quality content my dude.
I went back and watched your first video from Centralia and it was published December 2010. I actually have watched it at some point before. You really put out great stuff.
My boss bought a few houses in nearby Mt. Carmel to renovate a few years back and I remember driving through Centralia every Friday when we'd go out there to work on the house. I used to be really into urban exploration when I was younger (Weird NJ places and stuff like that) so it really was interesting to finally 'see' Centralia and say I've been there. Even though there isn't much there left to see, I still found it very cool knowing the history of the place and knowing there's a fire raging beneath your feet that you can't see. Wish I still had the time to do more exploring myself. I definitely miss it.

I remember when I was young seeing a girl that lived beyond Centralia so I’d have to drive through there on that closed section of road and there were all these cracks on the side of the road going bright red and trees going up once in a while. It was pretty crazy steam vents coming out of the ground in random spots was like another world going through there
My Grandfather and my Father both grew up in Centraila, and both worked in Coal Mines in that area. I remember riding through Centraila every sunmer growing up, on trips to visit our relatives nearby in Mt. Carmel 6 miles away.

Friends and I used to ride quads all through there. Its even more surreal during cooler weather with snow in the air; it makes the steam more pronounced and hang in the air more. Have some great pictures of the highway and what was left at the time, yes those waves in the pavement make great jumps.

They have integrated fire suppression where lines are routed from the tank to common fire-affected areas like the engine, and around the driver in case they've caught fire. When you hit the button to activate the system, it just douses EVERYTHING. If planes work like that, the crew wouldn't have needed to see a fire or even necessarily know where it was.
I drove a delivery route that had a stop in Shamokin and I would stop in Centralia and walk out the ridge and look around. Cool place. You can hear the fire roaring down in the vent pipes.
Thats definitely a sad story to a once blue collar town. Ive been there back in the late 90's. Coming from Pittsburgh Pa. Me and a few buddies one day we would drive there and try to time it just right so it was just getting dark out. We drank a few beers on the highway after seeing the town. Cops came and kicked us out. My buddy then took us to a old fishing spot he knew of and we camped out fishing all night then the next morning we went somewhere to eat breakfast and went home. It was a cool little adventure for sure. Im the last one out of all of us that was there that night to keep this memory alive.
When I was a kid in the south people had barrels in their back yards where they dumped and burned their trash regularly. Can't imagine a central burning ground. Incredible story!
Here in Flint, Michigan, where I grew up we used to have burner barrels to burn our trash, then the big companies came in and paid off the Democrats to get all our trash for a fee of course. That was back in the late 60s.

I live up in NY state about two hours north. Centralia's story has always fascinated me. Such a tragedy. I always wondered why this wouldn't cause a lot of forest fires. Great video.
Great video! I went on a road trip from Maine about 8 years ago and Centralia was one of my stops. I remember the giant cracks on the highway there. I took video of the side streets with empty lots that were overgrown I thought it was eerie. We visited one of the cemeteries and it was hard to imagine these were people who once lived in a vibrant town thats no longer quite there.
Thank you, Chris and Jay for returning us to visit Centralia, I compare it to a visit to Chernobyl on a smaller scale with not as many lives lost. It is saddening how much man has destroyed in mankind's quest to survive. 👍

In spite of the danger of collapse and steam coming up out of the ground all over the place it was still a very nice looking town with well kept houses. Such a shame!
The Centralia firetruck looks very well maintained. Someone doesn't want that building, or the truck, to deteriorate and I personally think that's kinda cool. I honestly still think it's kinda stupid that they covered the highway because of "social distancing"...
Been there 3 times. Walked every inch of the place. Last time was perhaps February 2013, NOBODY was there. It might have been the spookiest experience of my life
Thank you for the fascinating video! This will probably sound strange, but as a Pennsylvanian I find this to be so very sad. I remember when that little boy Todd Domboski fell in that hole. That was so horrible! My oldest daughter was born in 1983. I had been in Centralia in the 1970’s, it gives me goosebumps just thinking I had been there. Thanks again..great job!
I grew up about 30 minutes away from Centralia. I've never been, but I've driven close by it countless times. You can sometimes smell the smoke to this day when the wind blows the right way.

There is a similar place. New Castle, Colorado. But the only vents are natural, and you can still see the heat coming out in the winters.

He died from a Dr induced drug overdose. The Doctor was later charged for this.

I know plenty of people in the south who still have burn barrels or burn piles in their yards.
