Hey Harli, I really appreciate these long-term and start to finish videos you've been making. It's really helpful to get an idea of what the whole process looks like for things like prop boxes. I know they must be extra challenging and time-consuming to make, so I want to say an extra big thanks for doing them :)
hi harli! i’ve been using your propagation methods for some months now and they’ve been thriving! i’m obsessed too! can you please make a video on how you pot them up to soil after please! do you remove the sphagnum at all? or some or most of it? thank you!
She's mentioned in past videos that she just takes the root ball out with the moss on it and plants it right in the dirt and covers it. The moss will break down eventually :)
Hey, I never thought the internodal spacing was a big deal either until I saw a video where I guy left a lot of internodal spacing on one cut and just a little bit of internodal spacing on another cut and the growth ended up being different. the growth on the longer internodal spacing was bigger! So now I leave a little bit more stem than I used to. Might be a good idea for a video for you? Maybe take a few cuttings with different lengths on the internal spacing and compare the growth? I don't know, this is just a thought that I wanted to pass along to you!
so much learn! must say you're one of my flavorite plant mamas purely because of the adorable quirks and mannerisms/energy ya bring to these videos. I guess you can call that authenticity ^__^
Does anyone else recycle bottles like Gatorade bottles and soda bottles by poking holes in the bottom and cutting the tops off and using them for pots? It works great for cuttings and it's recycling/reusing :)
I would use clear bottles for tops as humidity domes but the bottoms are better when they block sunlight, which eliminates algea growth. I guess it's fine when given away as one time use but if you reuse, none translucent plastic is better.

Oh yes! I totally agree! I recently did a video about potting up moss props. I actually don't remove the moss from the roots, I just stick it into a pot of substrate like a little sphagnum moss plug haha thank you for watching

I saved my cebu blue propagating this way. It was my first time using this method and it worked great. I’ve moved the cuttings to soil and they are doing so well!
Amazing video as always! Both informative and entertaining. Two future video suggestions, would you make a video on transferring a plant from a sp. moss propagation to soil? I've heard sphagnum retains too much moisture in a soil mix, but also the moss is interwoven with the roots so you risk breakage. As well, I think it would be a fun idea to make a time lapse of one of your grow bins, probably best with your fastest growing varieties, just slowly watching the plant grow and grow.
This is great information. I definitely had too much moss in my prop cups. But checking and making sure nothing was rotting. I have roots on my hoya crimson princesses!!! So exciting!!!
I’ve been doing some propagating lately and this video was so helpful. I’d love to see a video on how to transfer the propagated plants to soil? How successful is it? Since the roots are attached to the sphagnum moss is it ok to leave some of it on the roots when transferring to soil? 🌱💚
She posted a video recently (at least I think it was recently) saying she keeps the moss attached as if it was a plug & just puts in her soil mix with no issues.
Oh Harli, I love you, I could watch anything you post, even if it's you making breakfast lol @Harli and everyone I got a very well rooted Thai Constellation stem cutting that was taken directly from soil the other day and I know how finicky they can be, I dont do well with Monsteras in general, they always get root rot in my care... But the Thai was a trade and it got great genes and potential. Soo.... I put it in a bucket and filled it loosely with moss, didn't cover the stem where a new eye is, tho. Rooting powder, keiki paste, the whole nine yards. Put a lil cling film foil (god forbid I remember the American word for it) on top, just slightly and put the whole thing under a strong grow light. NOW.... This is my first Thai, I feel like this is the big exam after years of studying plants. I usually do great with moss + foil + grow light. HOWEVER this plant is known to be difficult and expensive and I am so scared it will get root rot. It already had some after the transfer from soil to water for a few days. The stem is doing great, very dry, hard, no problem. But the roots keep me up at night lol If you - Harli - or anyone else got additional tips or would like to share their experience, please do so :) What could I do if root rot happens in moss? Cut the rotten parts and let the roots dry before putting them back into moss? Cinnamon? I'll take any oh so tiny tip you got XD

Hi Harli, I'm not sure as to when exactly are the cuttings ready for soil. And also, do they not need an acclimation period? They will be removed from this high humidity environment. And also, can this process be done with ryzhomes?
I kind of touched on the acclimation thing! I actually don't move them gradually, I just make sure to keep the plant substrate moistened & out of direct sunlight for a while once it has been moved to regular home environment. I've never had an issue with the plant doing weird things when being moved from the bins. Of course, plants like beognia or other very delicate ones may take issue. It kind of depends on the plant type. As for when they're ready for soil, I have a previous video on my channel with more info on that! I tend to wait for a new growth point to pop & then that's when I will repot them.
@@HarliG Thank you so much for taking the time to reply! I'm familiar with the other video, must've watched it like 5 times. Inspired by you, I started propagating via bins, and I'm really happy. Thanks for all your content!
Hey! I mix it according to the package. So I add a capful to a gallon of water & then add some from that gallon into another gallon, which is what I use to actually water from
Great video, very helpful! I actually hate propagating because it makes me nervous, seems like a lot of work and I already have too many plants but sometimes I have to to save a plant or something. I’m not sure if you have made a video about how to transition a plant from growing in a box with moss to soil in a house, that would also be helpful 😉💙!
I know I’m late to the party but for anyone starting their prop journey, this advice is 💯 solid!! I wish I would have had this video years ago 😂 But seriously, follow this to a T and you will be successful in your props. Trust me, I learned the hard way! Thanks Harli for such a great video!
How do you decide how many nodes to put into each cup? I have a ton of Cebu cuttings I’m about to do this with, but I don’t know how many to put to a cup.
@@candicepetty1179 I always cut between each node, and I put a few in a small cup, depending on the size. You can stuff as many as you’d like in but once the roots start growing, they might need something bigger. If you’ve never propped before, I suggest starting in just water, especially with something like cebu (they’re easy to root in water) and you can get the hang of it better. It took me a while to get sphag propping on point because it reeeeally matters how wet/not wet the moss is. It takes some practice, and water propping is still what I use to prop most things with. Hope that helps!
Hi Harli, I live in Denmark. I would love to get my hands on the spagnum moss you are using, but it is not possible to buy here i DK. I can only get the moss for reptile aquariums and I tried it - it is no good. It can be imported of course, but that will be expensive. Thank you for making the videos ♥

Hi Harli, what is the Liquidirt/water ratio you use - I notice it's a lot lighter in color than what the instructions call for. Thanks so much!
Hey! I mix it according to the package. So I add a capful to a gallon of water & then add some from that gallon into another gallon, which is what I use to actually water from
Much appreciated!!
I have a prop box that I started where after I had them in there I noticed a couple mealy bugs. Do you have any tips on getting rid of them?
Great video, very helpful! I actually hate propagating because it makes me nervous, seems like a lot of work and I already have too many plants but sometimes I have to to save a plant or something. I’m not sure if you have made a video about how to transition a plant from growing in a box with moss to soil in a house, that would also be helpful 😉💙!
Do you ever use a heating mat with the box???
What type of box do you use? Is it a tight seal lid or loose fit lid? Does it matter? Thanks!
It doesn't really matter (:
If it's loose fit the water will evaporate out a little bit so there may be a tad more upkeep on it
Thank you so much for this helpful step by step! I just have one question... What's a node? 😂
Hi there, thanks for your videos. I know this video is older but do you still have a shop to sell your plants? Thanks. 😁
this was suuuuper helpful!
Hey! Darn! I will look into trying some alternatives & get back to you on something I've found that works equally well.
@@HarliG Thank you dear 😘
Hey Hail, My home is quite cold generally, so can l put a Heat mat under the Propergate box, ?? as it sit in the sunlight by the window. Just to keep my Cuttings warm...
Thanks from Melbourne Australia... 👍❤😁🪴🇦🇺🦘🐨
Came here with the same question. Any heat mat you could recommend or other method to keep them warmer if you house is on the coolish side. Worried about getting a bad one and burning down my house 🔥 😱
I am obsessed with that Philodendron, what is the name again? And where may I be able to find it?
I’ve done a prop box in the past with more common houseplants. However, recently I’ve started buying more Hoya, do you think Hoyas will perform well in the box setup?
Yes! I love propping Hoya this way
I mixed spangham moss and miracle grow moss together... now I'm thinking there wont be enough air flow?? Have you ever done that. The MG is more like compost seeming than moss but I hated to waste it so mixed it in!
WOW!! This video is sooo informative! Thx 4 sharing :-)
Hey Harli, do you fertilize them when they are rooting in the bin?
Good Morning Harli!!
Good morning! (:
New sub from Australia 🇦🇺
Have you tried tree fern fibre to propagate?
Do you always use plastic cups for propagating?
Not always
Hey… keep going back to this video/ it’s exactly the way I propagate and I just kinda guessed after watching .. oh….Days and Months of your videos! lol
How far from the grow light do you put your box???
Also- I have my 3oz cup props in a 12+” bin… do you think that’s ok??
Would Really appreciate a response/ I know this video is ancient.Ty in advance!! (LOVED your response to your proposal 😂I would have had my husband learning how to deep dive that day!!! Lmao)
{ps- I have over 300 houseplants- they have taken over every room… I REALLY NEED- definitely Need- to make some $ off my hobby/obsession to cover some very important medical supplies for my severely disabled son that his insurance will not cover…. So any help and response would be greatly appreciated- My setup is 7 shelves w bins w 20-30 ppf lights, 4 large fish tank/ terarium props w 30-50 ppf lights and hanging 50,120,200 ppf lights over top of shelves and in “under the stairs prop area” Thank you for reading}
What do all my props rot in moss? What am I doing wrong
Why
I got some small cuttings of hoya austrillis, crimson queen, and pubacalix splash is the anything special I could do help them acclimate better? They live on a shelf outside my room, in NW oregon. It hasn't been "warm" yet at night but they haven't shown signs of stress.
Harli G can you prop with peet moss instead? And whats your shops name?
Hi. Just wondering if you use liquid dirt for you bigger plants also or some other type of fertilizer?
Yes! I use liquidirt for all of my plants, even my outdoor container veggies
