Thank you. I just repotted a batch of hoyas and scindapsus using perlite prop box. They were rotting in water. My hoya kerrii cutting was dying in water but it has grown bunch of roots in perlite box❤ . Very effective and hassle free.
I'm trying to know when to use perlite and vermiculite. Now, I see some content on using it... first time seeing your video. Thanks for the interesting information.
Perlite does not break up as easily as vermiculite. I like vermiculite as an additive to my potting substrata instead of vermiculite because it's water retention is better. Vermiculite leaves more space for air and to my mind, is better for rooting cuttings.
Very good video . Would have liked seeing a new cutting being introduced into the box. Do you use rooting powder? how long of a stem do you use beneath the nodes? How do you determine when to put cutting into a pot? Thank you.
I really appreciate this video. Living in an apartment with a N NE facing window and balcony, it is difficult to propagate hoyas. Right now, I tried your method by putting a hoya fusca purpureo and a hoy a kunming kina cutting with your perlite method in a plastic sour cream container (without the lid) in a glass cookie jar. It is in a bright window, again facing N NE and I truly hope this method works. Thank you for this simple and intelligent method!
I can’t wait to try this. I really appreciate your videos they are very informative. When I am ready to do my next propagations of my Hoyas I will be trying this. I have never had luck with soil propagating but of course very good luck with water. Thank you again
Thank you, while watching some of your other video’s,I’ve learned to use the perlite prop box method. I don’t propagate too often, but did make my Cebu Blue a great deal fuller with cutting I propagated using only perlite. Now, my sister has been giving me Hoya cutting and I’ve killed mostly all, I will try the perlite method 1st to avoid killing any other Hoyas cuttings in soil. I know you did show some of your Hoyas, but not sure if you spoke about the care for these finicky plants. Once again, thank you,for the information you provide. Cute pups
I just found your channel. You’re awesome! I’m trying my 1st perlite prop, well actually I moved 3 rooted nodes into perlite from sphagnum moss. I want to see if that’ll help when moving them to soil by strengthening the roots more than water. A little experiment. I’ve only been doing the plant thing for 8-9 months. I’ll start some props in perlite next. Thank you!
Thanks for all your informative videos, Jeff. I only use water or perlite methods. I have tried air-layering, but not successful. I prefer the perlite method, it is so easy and has been quite successful. I have not tried spag, as it seems the area I live in has a shortage.
I just finished adding to my list…6” prop box and here you are…Perfect timing! I’ve been trying but my box is only a couple inches deep and the perlite turns green. Could be my water or how I water 🤔I’ve been doing okay for single leaf cuttings and wet sticks but I’ve lost a few due to rot so I’ll be trying to improve my methods. 🙏 for all the great tips.
Hi there…no need to apologize I 💚 and appreciate all that you do. I know this is another job for you, but to me you are my plant friend. 🪴🍀🌻I’m retired from working life now, but I love learning and growing so thanks for Everything Plants👍
I love and appreciate your videos, thank you for your time and information. I tried just Perlite propagation, unfortunately it wasn't for me. I use several other ways though, mostly spag with a tiny amount of soil & perlite .50/50 spag & perlite. 50/50 soil & perlite...and occasionally for like say Alocasia corms, spag & soil. It's weird how some things work so awesome for one person, but is a total failure for others. Also with the added soil & perlite to the spag, it makes removing it from roots so much easier, and helps to stop nutrient deficiencies a lot, also it's a lot easier to transition to soil it seems (for me at least).
Thanks for this video. I am about to cut up a deffenbachia that is struggling big time. It is it's last chance. I have another of this variety so this is sink or swim for this plant. I bought a nice box for $2 at Target and I need to get some perlite, probably next week. But all the plant chores are about to begin. The cleaning up, cleaning out and condensing will begin. I think you have a video on prop a deffenbachia. I'm gonna go look for that now. Thank so much.
Thank you for the tip not to pour down drain 😳 if I didn’t watch this video I would have poured it down the drain. Thanks for the tip. Im rewatching making sure I propagated correctly lol
I tried using a heat mat but my sansevieria cuttings rotted and I had dried them beforehand for a day, so now Im just going to place them in a bright spot.
I have no experience with rooting these two expensive plants, so I don't want to say yes or no. If you had a large enough prop box then I'm sure it would be fine. If done water and soil propagation with regular monstera deliciosa previously, but you should definitely ask someone that has rooted these in the past.
The problem I found with perlite is the dust clogs the capillaries of the cuttings. My hydraengas got a film of perlite dust at the bottom when I had pressed them down and watered the pot . I had to pull my cuttings and wash my perlite twice this morning and every time it created a film floating on the surface. I cut the ends of my cuttings and put them in water which rehydrated the leaves. I have not had the same problem with mixtures, perhaps the dust attach to the other soil particles.
Thank you for the video! Could you (or anyone else) tell me what types of plants are in your prop box? Specifically interested in the pairs of large-ish forest green leaves with dark veining.
Thanks so much! I am so glad I stumbled on your videos i’m new to all things propagation. Terrifying but exciting! I read something about mycorrhizae helping with growth. Would you recommend or have you tried a potting mix with coarse perlite and mycorrhizae on your plant journey? Also, is there a way to know how big the perlite chunks are when trying to purchase? Sorry if that’s a silly question. Online shopping as I live in a remote area so difficult to see the grains
Thank you Jeff for this video. I am going to try this method on the weekend. Will it still work with a finer perlite? I have not been able to find a chunky one?
I have just found your channel and know I'm going to enjoy it! Thank you for your wonderful videos! I'm very new to indoor plants and their propogation. I have been reading up on propagation medium and have decided to do a trial using lechuza pons ( apparently this is the new secret that has amazing results as a propogating medium and as a growing medium for difficult plants. Do you have an opinion on it? ) in one propogation box and perlite in the other box. Im excited to see how they go. I haven't found spagnum moss to be very successful, especially with very small plants, like hoya mini belle. I don't know what I'm doing wrong i just can't seem to get much rooting happening and sadly have managed to kill a couple of my cuttings. Im excited to try your method. Thank you again, Jeff! Kindest regards, Beau Christine , New Zealand. 😊
My biggest question would be can you use those prop boxes outside in indirect sunlight. For example, I have a large canopy on my patio, and all of my plants do very well under it, as it has mosquito nets all the way around it, which act like a shade clothe for those plants that don't want direct sunlight on them. But those are outside plants, and I'm not sure if plants like anthurium's or alocasia's would prop okay out there in a prop box like this. I'm in SC. Thanks.
I've have never tried this, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. I would probably air it out more than I would if it was indoors. Maybe keep an eye on the temps in there as well....I'm not sure if the higher heat would affect the box at all. I'd say try something in there as a test....something that you wouldn't care if it died or not 🤣
Absolutely. I do most of mine outdoors on a roofed patio getting early morning sun. It heats up nicely during the day and I find it great for cuttings and seedlings.
I LOVE my perlite prop boxes! Question - have you ever had any issues with fungal spots on the leaves after spraying your box to rehydrate it? I'm always super nervous when doing this, so I tend to try wetting it by getting in between the plants in there..which obviously takes forever and is a huge pain😅
Hey Lauren.....So sorry for the late response. Sometimes it is hard to keep up lol I don't recall any issues but honestly I never have to spray done the perlite when the plants are in there. It should only get dry if you open it often.
Great information! Do you let your cuttings harden off before putting them in the perlite? Also, what are the dimensions of your boxes? I have the same mat... what temp do you use? Is your water from the tap, filtered or bottled? I'm going to give this a go... I have a very large collection of Hoyas so for those not thriving, hard to propagate and the expensive Hoyas this sounds perfect. Thank-you! 🌹
I’ve tried this before and didn’t work out. I think I forgot about it and didn’t rehydrate it. Trying again and keeping it under a grow light and somewhere I’ll see it often so I don’t forget about it. I hope it works cause I put some cuttings of plants that aren’t doing well and probably aren’t going to make it to spring in there to hopefully not loose the plant entirely.
@@EverythingPlants In the video i see all stem cuttings with leaves. I know some plants like watermelon peperomia can be propogated through just leaves and no stems. Will leaf cuttings like that work too?
Thank you for clearly explaining this rooting method. Have you used this method to propagate philodendron brasil cuttings? I think you mentioned it works well with philodendrons. I have a brasil that’s really leggy and “bald” on top. I’m thinking of cutting it up and making a full new plant.
Perlite would definitely work for brasil! I recently water propagated some brasil, but they are having a tough transition to soil. I find plants rooted in perlite don't struggle like water rooted plants once potted in soil.
@@EverythingPlants I currently have some golden pothos in water that need to be potted up as the roots are definitely long enough. Hoping they will do well. Was hopeful to plant with moss pole to stake it up. Your video on this was also informative!😊
I love the perlite propigation. I also use a heat mat. I have found Vigaro perlite at home Depot. A huge bag for 17 dollars. It has the larger size granuals. I think my plants do propagate much easier in the perlite. Are those two leaf cuttings in your box hoyas?
@@EverythingPlants I only have a few different kinds collected. They are wonderful plants. I have one big mama I have had for over 30 years. Whem I brought her home a piece broke off in transport so I rooted it. Just a little while ago I combined the Mother and daughter together in a floor pot with a double half hoop trellis almost 4 foot tall. Three + foot sticking out of the pot. So far all is good. Both were so root bound and I just could not do bigger haging pots for them. I have the Bella and Wayetti Crimson Queen and Princess and A Tricolor which I have been told might be just a different name for the princess. Australis and a Curtiisi. A small Macrofila. They are all just cuttings except the Crimson Queen which I have had a couple years and my big mama carnosa. Then I just bought a Lacunosa and a Publicalix X Splash. So I do have a few. compared to real hoya heads I do not have many. That Polyneura is so pretty.
It helps rinsing it. I rinse my perlie in a bucket in reverse osmosis filtered water. The dust settles at the bottom and the perlite is well saturated when I put it in the propagation container. The dust is left in the bottom of the bucket and only perlite with plenty of breathing space goes into the propagation container.
Thanks for the tips. I tried it with hoyas and success. I did get algae, though. Is that because it was too much water? Can that perlite be used with algae present?
I have never tried this method as Ive always had really good success just sticking them into soil. The box humidity may be too high for succulents, but you can sure try it out. The green stuff is most likely algae.
I am currently trying propagating succulents with single leaves sitting on top of soil. Do you recommend covering with a lid/plastic wrap similar to a prop box, or do you think it’s a bad idea? I’m considering this because I live in a very dry climate, however I don’t want to lose the progress my propagations have made.
Could you use the drained perlite water to water other plants? I don’t see an issue with it but am curious if you have any reasoning behind not using it.
@@EverythingPlants I prop small cuttings and leafless nodes. I haven't rinsed the perlite and that hasn't mattered for me thus far. Larger cuttings go straight into water. Like you, I don't usually have to water but if the box needs some moisture, I use a sprayer that looks a lot like yours. I probably open it once every other week but that's just to take a peek. Then I close her right back up until I decide it's time to pot up some props!
How would you deal with the smell? I've done a perlite prop box in a plastic container and it always seem to smell (and rot) but whenever I've used a DIY glass cloche (big glass on top of smaller glass), I get no issues. It's just that the glass cloche holds so little compared to a box.
Mine doesn't smell at all....perhaps it has to do with your water?!?! Maybe there is some mineral in your water that causes this....thus is the only thing I can think of. Try using distilled water and see if that changes it.
We appreciate your feedback and thanks for notifying us with your concern. We will forward this along to the appropriate division and apologize for any discomfort this may have caused you. We hope that any future viewing experiences will be pleasant.

Can't watering the leaves lead to fungus ?
can one use a glass fish tank like that??
I definitely don't see why you couldn't.....just make sure it has a top to seal in the humidity
Would this work for spider plants?
I've never tried it, but water works great
I love the perlite propigation. I also use a heat mat. I have found Vigaro perlite at home Depot. A huge bag for 17 dollars. It has the larger size granuals. I think my plants do propagate much easier in the perlite. Are those two leaf cuttings in your box hoyas?
Yes, those are hoya polyneura (fishtail hoya)! They are such a beautiful hoya. Do you have many hoyas in your collection?
That Polyneura is so pretty.
oooo, I've never seen chunky pearlite like that, I should look for some. I feel like every time I open my pearlite bag I breathe in a cloud of it. lol
Me too!!!
Mask~~ can attach to lungs
Thanks for the tips. I tried it with hoyas and success. I did get algae, though. Is that because it was too much water? Can that perlite be used with algae present?
Algae growth, from my understanding, is harmless to your plant or propagations. It may be getting too much light or try pulling it back slightly.
Thanks Jeff!
Spray paint the bottom portion to the height of the perlite
Can you put succulents in there too?
I never have...I'm not too sure how they would do with the constant higher humidity. They do very well just into soil.
Have you tried propagating maranta's in these perlite prop-boxes?
No, only in water....have you?
Have you ever put succulents in your perlite propagation box to root? Does your perlite get green in spots (maybe mold?)
I don't see any reason why you couldn't use it....
هل النبات يحتاج للاسمدة اذا كان في البرلايت ؟
Not when it is rooting in the propagation box. Just keep it lightly damp (no standing water at the bottom) and let them grow!
Does it get mold? Or algae?
It can over time, but it won't harm the plants
My fav method
What do you propagate in perlite? Is there any differences that you do with maintenance or setup?
@@EverythingPlants I prop small cuttings and leafless nodes. I haven't rinsed the perlite and that hasn't mattered for me thus far. Larger cuttings go straight into water. Like you, I don't usually have to water but if the box needs some moisture, I use a sprayer that looks a lot like yours. I probably open it once every other week but that's just to take a peek. Then I close her right back up until I decide it's time to pot up some props!
Have you ever propagated a Dracena?
@@mademm5148 I've never chop one of those
How do you manage algae?!
Whee do you got those heat matt?
You can find a ton of Amazon or some plant shops carry them as well
Why are my cutting getting mold???
Like green stuff? That's algae and it's from the light. It's pretty much harmless to the cuttings
Add peroxide 3%, mix 1 part peroxide to 4 parts water or higher. Plants love it, it’s basically water with extra oxygen atom.
