    It's interesting that Rhianna made the same point as we did. We discussed how we preferred the way Anniversary handled Lara's first kill as it was her consciously made decision rather than a reaction. Having talked a lot to Murti about his writing experiences, it's interesting to compare them with Rhianna's. Unfortunately, sometimes gameplay takes precedence even at the expense of narrative logic and character arcs.

      It wasn't even good gameplay choice, a cutscene sending you into a shootout with dozens of enemies after so much story didn't work.
      It was badly designed, from gameplay perspective. They had to have a break after that, some platforming, then return to combat and make next kill so you can prepare and aim not be rushed down.

    Very entertaining and informative interview. She is genuinely a very talented writer. I love the moment in which she describes how she would have developed Lara's first kill, making her choose that path. In my opinion, a lot of Rihanna's potential was wasted in favour of gameplay in Tomb Raider 2013.

    Interesting interview! And it's a shame that many fans would agree with Rhianna's ideas that were unfortunately changed for the game, for gameplay reasons or otherwise. It'd have been interesting if she were asked to write a novelization of TR2013 where she could make some small changes like that.

    The tension between the writing and gameplay was so apparent in 2013, I always found a little disgusting how much the fault landed mostly on her feet... Games are complicated projects and she got scapegoated

    Well this interview is enlightening. So she's had issues with the same elements of the reboot story as most of us had. Always knew Crystal is incompetent im storytelling unless they have someone over them but to butcher that first kill or forcing daddy issues in Rise. Good grief I'm even less hopeful with Unified Lara 🙄

    • @BeatGoat

      It's odd to me that CD would be so bullheaded despite the fans complaining about the forced family drama for years AND even their lead writer being against the idea. What's the point of hiring a professional writer if you aren't going to listen to them anyway?

    • @krisnephilim
      @krisnephilim Рік тому +6

      @@BeatGoat - to slap a recognizable name onto the project and potentially attract some people. And if she helps writing something into the story, all the better. Crystal Dynamics seems to feel they know better than anyone else, life verifies this, but they keep pressing on...

    The team outvoted Rhianna because they _really_ wanted to write Terry Pratchett in as Lara's father haha...

  • @YoShImUrA53
    @YoShImUrA53 Рік тому +5

    8:05 it's extremely conflicting to see how, what should be a newer, more modern version (then, in 2013) of an iconic female character, "wasn't allowed to be too confident"...
    To me that sounds the opposite message of, first, what the character stood for, as well as what a modern female icon/heroine would inspire other women to be.
    I can't get behind whoever shifted that approach in Lara's characterization.

    • @BeatGoat
      @BeatGoat Рік тому +5

      It's not that Lara wasn't supposed to be confident at all. At this point, she was way too young and inexperienced to be able to quick-fire witticisms while her and her friend's lives were in constant danger, and there would've been a huge dissonance between Lara's attitude and the story the game was trying to tell. I might not be a huge fan of how Crystal kept dragging Lara's progression out in the Reboot games, but the idea that she didn't just spawn as an uber-confident girlboss adventurer is not that outlandish.

    • @YoShImUrA53
      @YoShImUrA53 Рік тому +1

      @@BeatGoat I see how that reasoning works, and it's definitely a possibility she learned that quick-fire and witticism.
      But I also think that leap in character is a stretch for some traits that I believe should have already been there, in some shape or form, prior to all her adventures.
      I feel like we should see some of that personality come through in a less polished, or more rough manner.
      I can't really "join" both Lara's as the same person, no matter how much "growth" you throw into the revival character. They honestly feel like a totally different person to me. Might just be me...

    • @BeatGoat
      @BeatGoat Рік тому +3

      @@YoShImUrA53 I totally see where you're coming from, and I agree for the most part. Here's hoping that the supposed unification is not going to turn into another drawn out trilogy about Lara slowly "becoming who she's meant to be" or whatever. If done right, I believe there is a way to marry aspects of Classic Lara and Reboot Lara without them conflicting with one another, but I'm quite tired of waiting. It better be good.

    • @MrSnaztastic
      @MrSnaztastic 11 місяців тому

      @@sassygworl1452 ...to be fair they tried keeping the two Laras separate by keeping Classic in the mobile games for a while, which annoyed people who want to see her in a proper full release. I really doubt that whole "unifying timelines" thing is actually going to happen. It's marketing speak, and a roundabout way of saying they're rebooting again. Now that Crystal is probably being sold to Amazon, I'd be even less convinced that those original plans will pan out.

    I wish they kept her on and let her call more shots (pun intended) because she understood the assignment!!!!!! Lara doesn’t need the dead parents back story to make her actions impactful! We could’ve had something raw and original that gave us hints of flares of the original but they chose to not do that which is what made the reboot fall flat! 🙌🏻
