I’m so glad you talked about the move animations in Underworld! Ever since the game came out I never understood why Lara went from moving so smoothly in Legend and Anniversary to quite stiff and awkward looking in this one. Just like the swan dive; I always thought she looked like someone holding a barbie doll and making it ‘dive’ without moving any of the limbs because she looked so rigid now.
I couldn't believe that the swan dive - iconic, graceful, the epitome of Lara's daring, athletic, liberated nature - was reduced to this in Underworld (PS3) when it was so fluid and balletic on PS1, in the first game.
@@MistahJay7 in fairness the wall jumping and climbing animations are great looking, a lot more realistic compared to L and A. But I’m still not a fan of the live capture animations for Lara in this one. Still gives off a very rigid stance and run compared to the other games which is just ironic to me seeing they got actual gymnasts to do the motion captures
We reach the end of the Eidos era and about to start the Square Enix era right when it was just announced Square is selling off the franchise and studios to another company. Now that's timely.
Really great retrospective. I personally liked underworld, notwithstanding its faults. The story is interesting, the graphics were great for its time, and I really enjoyed the puzzles in this game. The Thailand and Mexico levels in particular are some of my favorites in the series.

As a PS gamer, and now just starting to get into PC. This TRU DLC pack is a godsend. I can finally play Lara's Shadow. BTW that Austin powers part was GOLDEN!
Just a question, got the dlc pack. I tried running it and every time the lag is horrendous (even after everything loads) and the audio is just a high pitched buzzing for the sound effects and lightly for the other audio. Did you have this too?
The wait was definitely worth it! I own underworld my thanks for reintroducing me to Tomb Raider! It was my first Tomb Raider game i bought with my own money and I'm really thankful for it! Can't wait for the next one TR (2013) is a personal favorite of mine
The humor in these reviews have always been your standout, but the austin powers monologue-how painfully close it fits to the arc of LAU was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen through these retrospectives. Great work! The thralls also always reminded me of the White Walkers from Game of Thrones in how they look and behave. Richard brought Thralls back to England the way Jon Snow did the white walkers to show Cersei.
This was SO WORTH THE WAIT!!! Easily one of the retrospectives I looked forward to the most - TRU is still to this day one of my favourite TR games ever .. when I played it the first time i loved everything about but but as i grew up and replayed it I noticed some of the flaws ... I wish the game had been longer and explored more fun gameplay mechanics (aside from the ones we saw in the DLC) and maybe had gotten a bit more work in with the Story...overall a great game to me but I see why it may not be the favourite for the Majority of Fans-- THANK YOU SO MUCH BTW for making the DLC available to us Steve! THIS IS SO MASSIVELY appreciated! Also thank you for creating these amazing Videos and Retrospectives, for your Discord server and your streams - they are amazing and places to hangout in and great fun! Awesome video as always! Keep doing what you're doing! Very excited to see what'll be next!
I never realized how much more complete a game this would feel with those DLCs, wow they turn a too short experience into an actually filled out and significantly more modern-feeling one! I'm glad to see it :) Especially since my first experience was the wii version....
Here we go!!!! I’ve been rewatching the series yet again building up to this! I know you’ll smash it again Steve. You put a lot of effort and care into your videos and it shows mate! Can’t wait to see it!
What I really appreciate this game for is how much it sticks to the idea of Underworld, especially in the level design. ALL the levels in this game start, end, or have a part where you go deep underground, and towards the end you mostly fight creatures who like the dark, like spiders or the Thralls. Many tomb raider games have these sort of levels, but Underworld's just felt a lot more thought out and thematic.
Amazing retrospective as always Steve! This will probably seem very random, but I have OCD and have 'comfort watches' that I latch on to if I'm going through a particularly tough time, which would normally be a tv show like Friends etc, but your retrospectives have been the first UA-cam series to become a comfort watch for me, so thank you for all the effort you put into creating them! 😊
11:14 Underpus: “Why must every 11 minutes of my life be filled with misery?!” The outside of Niflheim even looks like Squidward’s house too going by the sonar map.
Not many people will get this one, but it’s fitting that Xibalba is found underneath a Mayan ball court: The afterlife/underworld of Xibalba really is the Pitz. (Cue Curb your Enthusiasm theme)
50:46 Those look like Greenland Sharks which are found in the Arctic waters, can live up to 500 years and their meat is a delicacy despite being toxic Great retroreview as always and yes, Lara's spider legs while rock climbing still keeps me awake at night.
The reason they made a clone of her is because it's a homage to the original Atlantean copy of herself she had to defeat in TR1 / TR:A (Which Natla created then, and is Amanda directly states helped her make this new one* but improved.)
I discovered your retrospectives when the newest one was TR Legends. I love your style, humor, editing, and writing. You deserve way more views and I cannot wait for your TR 2013 video. Also how funny is that this review came up on the day of Square selling off TR and Crystal Dynamics!
You know a filmmaker is top of the shelf when you don't enjoy movies in general, but can sit still for almost a feature-length production and feel like no time whatsoever has passed. Outstanding as always, Steve, love you and love your stuff, please remember this forever 🤜💥🤛 In the same vein, RIP Paul, may he be forever remembered and celebrated. So next is TR2013... or, as I like calling it, Lara Bow 😏
never been so excited for a video in my sub box. Found your retrospectives earlier in the year and worked my way through them. This is the first time I've managed to see one as it's come out, feel like I'm watching a tv show after binging the box sets
This was so well worth every minute of the wait! This was a phenomenal retrospective on one of the more controversial Tomb Raider games, and I couldn't have asked for a better video. Well done!
13:30 Thanks for noticing this issue with Lara's animation! I don't understand why so many people though, including you, call it a "nitpick". To me, the acrobatics and the platforming of these games has always been one of the main reasons to play them. I have always loved being in awe at looking and, well, performing from the keyboard the amazing jumps and climbs, and I always wanted them to be as realistic as possible. It's one of the things Tomb Raider: Legend has done so well. Lara's jump height and length is pretty realistic, she no longer boosts 4 meters in the air, and her moves still look beautiful and mesmerizing. I mean, of course it's not "complete realism", it's still platforming, and it's forgivable to see her sliding the zip lines with her bare hands for example. But even in TR:L and TR:A, while the acrobatics were really good, they still were a bit junky, especially when combining jumps to bars and poles. Especially when you compare them to, say, Prince Of Persia: Sands of Time, where they did a really good job on how fluid all the acrobatics look, even if confined to basically only 4 directions. So, seeing Lara's animations in the Underworld was the most disappointing change they did. And not only the moves look junky, like you mentioned, where the game seems to skip a few frames and shows no connecting animation between two different moves, I hate how unnaturally fast she moves. When she moves across a ledge, she doesn't look like a believable human, but more like an insect rapidly climbing across a wall. It's really sad and surprising to see these flaws and at the same time see that the developers worked hard on making some other aspects of the game more realistic than in the previous games. And even the free-climbing move was obviously created to make the surrounding nature feel less arcade-like. This game is full of controversy, both story-wise and gameplay-wise, and the issues start right at the foundations.
Completely disagree. The parkour animaton in this game is easily the best in any Tomb Raider game The shifting in weight between jumps feels great and not Janky at all idk what you're talking about.
@ well just look at how animations are transitioned between each other. It's as abrupt as it possible can be, giving the game an arcade and unpolished feeling. For comparison, look at how animations are transitioned in the Prince of Persia: SoT games
I can't believe I'm finally playing the Underworld DLC (on PC) 14 years later. You folk can also use the latest Xenia Canary build (2 months newer) than the one included in the archive as well. Seems to work just as well at any rate.
@@soest584 Yeah, it's not working out of the box... I got xinput dlls and vjoy and GPDSCK, got into the start button but can't navigate the menu... the controls pick only some of the clock like menu options. He may be using a controller on his PC and not a Keyboard-Mouse setup.
Tomb Raider Underworld is one of my favorite games, and the trilogy it was a part of, is to me, the best of the Tomb Raider series. I would love for the next Tomb Raider games to return to this level design and development sensibilities.
I remember playing this back when it came out and being surprised by how much bigger and non-linear the levels were. It was a great development from Legend which, while pleasant, was a very simple game. Paraphrasing some game journalist, this game really made me feel like a Tomb Raider (underworld). It was also one of the best games graphically at that time, I found it almost photorealistic at times
Been waiting for this video for so long I completely forgot about to check it, Underworld was my first real Tomb Raider game and I absolutely adore it's experience. Thanks for the well made review.
You helped out in getting people to play the DLC with the link in the description! Thank you. You are the best. This retrospective was excellent. Hope we see TR2013 retrospective before the year is out. If not then that's ok. Your work is fantastic. Thank you.
I simply LOVE all of your TR Retrospective videos! I have never seen anything like these before! I‘m pretty excited for your videos of the new era of Tomb Raider that I want to be gone for good. Happy to already see your „subtle“ hints of how you view these games!
I've just finished watching your Tomb Raider Retrospective videos for the second time because I just find them so interesting and well put together...also they have me cackling like a goblin at times 😆 eagerly awaiting the next Retrospective video!
Thanks so much for taking so much time to make this series! New episode was amazing as always and I'll be rewatching it a lot while waiting for the 2013 part
I love these videos! I've been obsessed since the third one you did but hooooly, you keep getting better and better. And it's also really nice to see not ONE bad comment. Your hard work is appreciated!
Just wanted to let you know that i havent watched this yet as I'm at work, never the less - I wholeheartly know what epic journey of a video awaits me. I thank you in advance. I've been excited to this moment for months! Thank you dearly Steve ❤💪🙏
your work is awesome, you are so dedicated and passionate about making these reviews it really shows. i have played this game many times and i love tomb raider, thanks for making this review. you gave me a chance to revisit some wonderful memories of tomb raider series.
Laying sick in my bed, re-watching the retrospectives, I realized I never dropped a comment on this one? How did that happened... no idea. Anyway, better late then never I guess! I might be one of the very few people who actually like this game. I have replayed it so many times I feel like I can do a speed-run with my eyes closed. I guess I am a sucker for half baked, unpolished and unfinished games, considering AOD is my fav. TR Underworld had a lot of potential in it. It was visually stunning, there were so many new elements . Lara was sweating, and the sweat would wash the dirt off her skin, she was making different faces and even making a pain grimace at some occasions. Heck even her ass would clench when she draw out the guns! I also have a soft spot for her shoulder muscle definition here, it is just beautiful. Her outfits and equipment were very bad-ass looking, especially the ATV design is so... cool! Her new climbing and shooting skills were so cool too! The environment was awesome! The locations were interesting. She was able to interacting with the vegetation around her, which was so new. In general I really really liked the game. Yeah all the negative points you make are on point, but ... dont cancel me ... TRU is my favorite from the LAU era... yes i said it :D Great video as always, looking forward for TR2013 retrospective! Love ya Phteven! OH and btw, just to correct you, on PC, if you collect all the relics and finish the game on hard, there is a unlockable bathing suit, which is white and can be used only in the underwater levels.
Just WOW, it certainly is the best Tomb Raider serie I’ve EVER seen. The quality of your work is striking, congrats ! It’s always a pleasure to watch your videos, can’t wait to see the square enix reboot generation !
I'm currently going through a tough time right now, but these videos have been keeping me distracted at night when I can't sleep. Your commentary, observations, research, and humor is really fantastic and well thought out. I sincerely enjoyed this video series. Thanks for making it and with such genuine enthusiasm and interest. (:
Firstly, I wanna thank you for yet another amazing retrospective video but most of all I wanna thank you from the bottom of my heart for making it possible to play the Underworld DLCs on PC. I never had an Xbox so you made one of my childhood dreams about being able to play as Lara's doppelganger come true 🙏
This is a criminally underrated channel. Thank you for putting so much work to make these amazing videos of my favourite game series :) Also (meant as a non creepy compliment) you get fitter each video :)
Lara somersaulting and bringing both of her feet down on a thrall to destroy it reminds me of the double-knee drop that Jill Valentine does in Resident Evil 5's Mercenaries mini-game.
Once again a beautifully researched, shot and edited video. I have loved every second of it. Thank you very much for this! Can't wait what you have to say about the reboot.
A much expected video, I was so happy when I received the notification ! Amazing job as usual, I am always amazed at how you manage to cover all of these games' pros and cons with such fairness Can't wait to watch the other videos you plan on doing for Underworld 🤗
Love these videos so much!!! I was trying to look for a 100% walkthrough on the old Tomb Raider games and stumbled upon your video on Tomb Raider 1. Have been watching all of your videos since!! Love how Amanda looks so confused when the doppelganger throws her. 😂
Another damn solid video from you Steve! It's been almost a year since I've started watching your channel and I've loved every video so far. Can't wait for the TR 2013 review and keep up the good work!
I just started watching your TR retrospectives a few weeks ago and I have to say, this has become one of my favourite retrospective series on this platform. The pacing is superb - the way you go back and forth, from informative narration to fantastic British humour and back, it's unbelievably entertaining to watch. None of these videos ever feel anywhere near as long as the runtime says they are. After finishing the Angel of Darkness retrospective and seeing how you went out of your way to end the video by giving that game an alternate/happier ending, these aren't just some excellently produced video essays, these are the greatest love letters anyone has ever expressed to the Tomb Raider franchise in video format. Your channel deserves more recognition than Winston deserves to be locked in the freezer, and let me tell you... he really deserves it. Another phenomenonal video added to a phenomenonal series. Well done and keep up the good work!
I just discovered your channel two days ago and I kinda binged the entire TR Retrospective series. Very, very well done. I dont understand why you have so few subs for such amazing work. I hope the algorithm picks you up someday and you get the exposure you rightly deserve. Keep on the grind man!
Finished watching your TR Restrospective after it being my religious videos on the latest weekends, Steve, and my gosh!! Congratulations for your huge dedication, all effort put on the making of these videos. Tomb Raider community is such a precious jewel that has the best people involved. I also want to thank you for the TRU + DLC, I've never player the additional chapters and you and the people involved are allowing me to do so. Really looking forward to see your thoughts on the Tomb Raider Survivor Trilogy!! Top-notch as always and always.
STEVEEEEE I haven't even watched this yet but I already know it's going to be an amazing watch. Absolutely love your work and it's been an absolute treat to watch all your retrospective videos so far especially because of how well made, well researched, hilarious and nostalgic they all are. Keep up the great work 😁
Steve, thank you so much for that DLC bundle. I know the emulator has been available, but I'm just so IT challenged, I never even bothered to attempt to put it together. I've waited 14 years for this. I can't wait to try them this weekend.
I haven’t been this excited for a UA-cam video is years!! I loved it! You did an amazing job as always!!! Underworld was my favourite TR game and in my opinion the last good one. I’ll always hope they will bring back, glamorous, awesome puzzle crazy Lara in the future
I did not expect the Goldmember skit in there. Haven't laughed that hard in a while! As a long time TR fan who also coined their username from that very scene, I enjoyed it way too much lol. Brilliant.
Thanks soooo much for the Re-Pack...I knew someone one day would consider us and do something like this. It was my best tombraider game before 2013...and I realllyyy wanted to play the other DLCs....
Ive been very late but thank you a lot for this TR recap series. I enjoyed it so much!!! Its so sad that there are no more good games left to review😂. I watched all videos from tr from you over the last days and it was so great. It was comedy and information at the same time. Thanks thanks thanks!!!❤ This needs so much more attention for all your work ❤
Great video. I remember vividly watching the first review videos of this game when it was released and being impressed with the graphics. I only played it a few years later and I don´t know why ... but it still remains one of my favourite TR games.
Absolutely awesome - thank you for the best retrospective yet, it had me in tears of laughter and super-excited to replay it asap. Underworld is one of the best for me - and I never understood why the amazing DLC wasn't more widely available (I had to borrow a friend's Xbox to play it). For me this was the last great TR game until Shadow of the Tomb Raider - looking forward to seeing what you make of the reboot trilogy.
I actually loved Underworld but I understand why it was rebooted after this. The whole feel of Tomb Raider had gotten mundane especially with Uncharted coping everything Legend did along with other franchises. I am most excited for you video on Shadow, that game is severally underrated by this fandom especially with how they have Lara say farewell to her parents and the amazing dlcs that flesh out side characters
I looked forward to this. So happy to enjoy. Just got off a tough 3 day work schedule with little sleep. Sending my love to you and Paul's friends and family. RIP.
Absolutely incredible video as always Steve, well worth the wait! Best Tomb Raider videos on UA-cam 💙 I actually never knew about the DLC for all these years, fascinating stuff!
Sorry it took me so long to get around to this, but man, dude, awesome job as always on this one. I've been following you since before your retrospective began and this is the title I was most looking forward to. The Legends trilogy is my favorite, and Underworld always stood out to me as one of the most memorable entries. I really hope we see more of this Lara again someday, and I'm so psyched you got to tackle this amazing trilogy. Keep up the great work, dude!
Man do I remember how hyped I was for this game. I was just entering high school, and I would constantly visit forums getting every scrap of information I could, right up until I opened it on Christmas Day. And it did not disappoint! Looking back, sure it had some problems, but with the titles Square Enix have turned out, Underworld felt like the last authentic official Tomb Raider game (or so I hope not).
Well done! Excellent work, Mister Warr. I've now watched your newest review not once but twice, and it really is a very fitting, finely researched and deeply funny look at one of my all-time favourite entries in the Tomb Raider franchise. I doff my cap to you, sir. Lara's supposed talk with the police was just gold, and you comparing the fall-damage in this game with your own upload schedule was just the very best of self-roasts. Thank you, Steve, for making these, and for having us along for this amazing ride, both here and on Twitch. Happy evenings we have had! Good luck on your future endeavours, and I look forward to you diving - headlong and recklessly - into the Square Enix age of the games. Many thanks! Yours faithfully, -Lord Larry Croft
Great review as always! I always come back to your reviews and re-watch them. About dual aiming: Core Design actually tried to implement that in the first Tomb Raider game, but apparently the feature was too confusing to actually use during normal gameplay, so the team decided to omit the idea in the end. Some pre-alpha tech demos show how Lara can dual aim. So it's nice to see that they actually included that feature even if it took 12 years to do so.
Hey, Steve! I must admit that it took me almost a year to actually watch this video, mainly because I didn't want to see your take on this Era of Tomb Raider games come to a close. The Legend Timeline is probably my favourite of all the Tomb Raider Timelines our there. However, now that I have finished watching it, I have to tell you that you have clearly outdone yourself with this one, yet again! This video was a Masterpiece! I grew up on Legend, Anniversary and Underworld, playing it with my cousin during our Summer breaks back when we were still in school, so it holds a special place in my heart. So, this might be late to say, but you've done a marvelous job with this one! Keep it up! And a big thank you for sharing your creativity and providing great entertainment! Can't wait for what comes next! 👏💖💐😍🤩

I wish the game had been longer and explored more fun gameplay mechanics (aside from the ones we saw in the DLC) and maybe had gotten a bit more work in with the Story...overall a great game to me but I see why it may not be the favourite for the Majority of Fans--
THANK YOU SO MUCH BTW for making the DLC available to us Steve!
I totally agree with you man
I never realized how much more complete a game this would feel with those DLCs, wow they turn a too short experience into an actually filled out and significantly more modern-feeling one! I'm glad to see it :)
Especially since my first experience was the wii version....
Finally you uploaded this. Been a while since your Anniversary video and we all needed this. I feel stronger now!
That was really good, a job done with love and professionalism!
I guess we all miss doppy.
This was my first TR game and I grew up playing it. Really happy you are covering this trilogy
I feel stronger now....... knowing this is about to come out in a few hours 🤣 can't wait to hear what you think about this janky masterpiece
11:14 Underpus: “Why must every 11 minutes of my life be filled with misery?!” The outside of Niflheim even looks like Squidward’s house too going by the sonar map.
I haven't noticed it until now, but Natla's burned skin makes her look like her Atlantean creature creations.
Not many people will get this one, but it’s fitting that Xibalba is found underneath a Mayan ball court: The afterlife/underworld of Xibalba really is the Pitz. (Cue Curb your Enthusiasm theme)
I'm afraid of a coming day when no channel would remain faithful to old classic games and we can't find someone like Steve to watch.
50:46 Those look like Greenland Sharks which are found in the Arctic waters, can live up to 500 years and their meat is a delicacy despite being toxic
Great retroreview as always and yes, Lara's spider legs while rock climbing still keeps me awake at night.
You mean when she is fully leg spread when climbing the pipe wall on Natla's ship?
Well done!
I'm so happy I'll finally get to play through Underworld's DLC. Thank you for taking your time and making that nice package. It works great so far!
You've really outdone yourself, Steve. Another great retrospective. Thank you.
honestly, I was clapping at the end of this. thank you for bringing so much attention to tomb raider. I'm so excited to see how you do TR 2013!
13:30
Thanks for noticing this issue with Lara's animation!
The parkour animaton in this game is easily the best in any Tomb Raider game
The shifting in weight between jumps feels great and not Janky at all idk what you're talking about.
@ well just look at how animations are transitioned between each other. It's as abrupt as it possible can be, giving the game an arcade and unpolished feeling. For comparison, look at how animations are transitioned in the Prince of Persia: SoT games
Really awesome of you to upload that DLC pack for us. Thank you very much!
I can't believe I'm finally playing the Underworld DLC (on PC) 14 years later. You folk can also use the latest Xenia Canary build (2 months newer) than the one included in the archive as well. Seems to work just as well at any rate.
hey! I'm in the menu, and i basically CAN'T press the start button. I thought, that u could try 2 help me
@@soest584 Yeah, it's not working out of the box...
Thank you.
After Matt and BadassGamez , I never thought that I would be drawn to another channel about Tomb Raider.. But you're the best , man!
omg after 14 years i can finally play the dlcs for the first time ever as i am a pc player THANK U SO MUCH
I simply LOVE all of your TR Retrospective videos!
TRU is my favorite from the LAU era... yes i said it :D
Great video as always, looking forward for TR2013 retrospective!
Thank you for putting so much work to make these amazing videos of my favourite game series :)
Also (meant as a non creepy compliment) you get fitter each video :)
Lara somersaulting and bringing both of her feet down on a thrall to destroy it reminds me of the double-knee drop that Jill Valentine does in Resident Evil 5's Mercenaries mini-game.
Absolutely astonishing! I am always satisfied with the quality of your videos. The humour, the research, the details. I wish you more success.
Once again a beautifully researched, shot and edited video. I have loved every second of it. Thank you very much for this! Can't wait what you have to say about the reboot.
A much expected video, I was so happy when I received the notification ! Amazing job as usual, I am always amazed at how you manage to cover all of these games' pros and cons with such fairness
Can't wait to watch the other videos you plan on doing for Underworld 🤗
This was fantastic, so glad I found your channel!! *goes to play the Underworld DLC for the first time, finally, THANK YOU*
Love these videos so much!!! I was trying to look for a 100% walkthrough on the old Tomb Raider games and stumbled upon your video on Tomb Raider 1. Have been watching all of your videos since!! Love how Amanda looks so confused when the doppelganger throws her. 😂
You are a freaking mad lad.... watched all TR Retrospective, and loved them all.
Thank you for your TR Retrospective videos and for the TRU DLC pack :)
Thanks for yet another amazing entry to your TR retrospective series! Looking forward to the next one, whenever that happens :)
I've been waiting for this! Enjoyed it soooo much and excited to see you're taking on the 2013 reboot/remake
Love these videos my friend! Watching all of these retrospectives has been a highlight of my holiday. Looking forward to the Survivor trilogy as well!
Boy, you went all out with that Austin Powers joke XD
the austin powers/natla scene is gold xDDDD
The Austin Powers snippet is GOLD. Hilariouuuussss
And the policeman is also hilarious
I looked forward to this. So happy to enjoy. Just got off a tough 3 day work schedule with little sleep. Sending my love to you and Paul's friends and family. RIP.
Thanks for all your hard work S.O.W you truly make days a lot more bearable
"Fall damage that's about as consistent as my upload schedule" made me absolutely lose it for some reason
Wonderful man. You keep going from strength to strength. Always glad to recommend your work.
Omg, can't wait! I have watched previous retrospectives multiple times.
This game had one of the best soundtracks of them all - its completely epic...
Yours faithfully,
-Lord Larry Croft
21:16 this Austin powers gag is killing me! 😂🤣😂
It’s that time of the year again! Steve back with the retrospective and every single one is a masterpiece!
God that Austin Powers bit was so fantastic 😂
steve i just wanted to shout out how grateful i am that you archived the DLC so that i can run it with xenia, i've been dying to experience it.
Been waiting ages for this! Did not disappoint! Phenomenal quality as usual you had me creasing lots!
