    I updated my avatar so it's not a question mark anymore, but it will take a while to show up for everyone.
    I hope you enjoy this video! I give a lot of insights into how the publishing process worked in my case, how royalties worked, how much money I made, etc. If you would like prints or other merch of this art, my Redbubble link is here: rdbl.co/2XutxDZ Also be sure to check out the other YTAC videos for this round! Some people will be uploading their videos tomorrow.

      Right now is a great time to self-publish via crowdfunding (IndieGoGo > Kickstarter). Make the book that YOU and your 1.1M subscribers want. Livestream the creative process, create unique content for backers, higher tiers for original art, stretch goals, etc. Talk to people who've done it before so you make fewer mistakes. YOU CAN DO IT!

      @@lizabeller Could also be because she had deadlines to meet. If it were self published, Im sure she'd slowly chip away at it, since it's for a book and she cant use any footage for her channel, and unless she imposed it on herself, there wouldnt be a neccessarily strict deadline.

      If they are bankrupt and its in the hand of lawyers they can't just send out things because the remaining things they have is used to pay the debts that are there. Usually everything the company owns is used as a whole to pay off as much as possible, thats also why the people got contacted if they want to file something to get their part, because if you deny your part, it will be used for someone else, since there is never enough to pay everyone.

      Won't work if the company's bankrupt. In that situation every asset the business has control over is seized to help pay the debt off, including stock like books.
      But normally, yes. You can request that they send you the books that didn't sell, so you can try to sell them yourself.

    Bankruptcy in the US is public information. So, you can talk about it all you want. You can find it on line. You can file a claim on your own that will be added to the rest of the claims to get your money. You have a email stating the amount of money that is owed to you, you just file it with the claim. Since it is for money that was for work that you did, it might be high up on the list, if they have any assets to sell. I am so glad I bought your book when it came out. So sorry this has happened to you.

    This was some insightful tea! I also thought of working with a publisher for my first doodle book until I saw how complicated and screwed up some of their terms were. I ended up just saying F it and self-published. Even though it's more work on my part to sell my own books and have full control over the final product, it has been rewarding (plus not having to split the profit is nice). I totally get your reasons for working with them at the start though. Hope to see some of your self-published books in the future!

  • @toothaches7461
    @toothaches7461 5 років тому +91

    Baylee, I'm not sure you should 100% give up on getting your royalties. I know you're really kind and obviously don't want a giant hassle and maybe the amount isn't much, but if all the authors and artists give up on fighting corporations for the money they're owed, it just proves they're allowed to steamroll us and get away with whatever they want. Companies rely on the people they screw over to just shut up and deal with it instead of fight for money and credit and rights to their work. Like sure, you got a portion of royalties and an experience with publishing and it was going alright until the point of their bankruptcy, but from that point after you have been made to work for exposure essentially- which ain't alright.
    The less intimidating option might be to reach out to others who have been published by the same company and see if anyone is doing like a class action lawsuit so it would be like a group going after the company instead of just you alone. A lawyer would also be able to figure out what to do about your contract since y'know, how can it even be valid if the company technically is now out of business??? It's good to know what you are obligated by contract to do and let be done to you. The company at some point should be able to pay you- likely from selling off whatever assets and profitable contracts they still have.

    • @lToxxiil
      @lToxxiil 5 років тому +5

      Yea but it'll cost more money to get just 1000 back, like if she didn't have to pay a crap ton for a lawyer it would be worth it.

    • @5ofsix747
      @5ofsix747 5 років тому +5

      I would agree with a class action suit but not for a bankruptcy case. Basically any assets they company has will be paid to those they are in dept too... those getting royalty checks would be WAY on the bottom of the list. As they have already received partial payment with no more profit to be made.
      Also, Jezza would be incorrect it telling people to not buy his book cause he is not being paid. He has ready been paid for physical books sold to 3rd party sellers. I guess telling people not to purchase digital books would make sense?
      Its a shame really, cause F+W produced some quality magazine publications. I was pretty crushed when I had heard they folded. But loads of publishers are now folding.

    • @SpellboundBrush
      @SpellboundBrush 5 років тому +1

      I get that, but realistically the legal fees would probably be more than the $8,000 she already got. Since they are going bankrupt any judgement she might receive in her favor would probably be swept under the rug in the bankruptcy and she'd lose her legal fees and get nothing. It's not that cut and dry to sue people for royalties and art infringement.

    Hi Baylee. I’ve also had several books published by divisions of F&W Media and have gotten more inside info. The situation may not be as grim as you fear. F&W declared Chapter 11 which means that they are not liquidating the publishers, just putting all divisions of the whole company up for sale. At the end of May, a judge will be deciding on offers from about 50 companies to acquire the publishers and their assets. From what I understand, it is quite possible that your imprint will be bought and continue to do business which may well mean your book will still be available and hopefully you will keep getting further royalties in future. Fingers crossed fo all of us authors!

    I enjoy your book very much. I use copics for paper crafting and mainly just color in stamped images or make backgrounds and find your book helpful. So thank you!
    I had a book printed by Pine Cone Press titled ‘Perfectly Patterned Pages’. It’s an idea book for paper crafting using patterned papers. I came up with the idea, approached the publisher and they loved the idea right away and I wrote all the text and created the majority of the art for the book and asked my sister and a few friends to contribute some cards and pages for it. I made less than $5,000 which was nice but it took a lot of work and time and probably not even close to being a fair compensation.
    I am proud of myself for the accomplishment of presenting an idea, it being accepted, doing all the work and having a book made. It was something I really wanted to do at the time and I will always have that achievement.
    The company also went bankrupt and I never received all the $$ compensation due to me but overall I’m glad I did it.

    Well explained Baylee! As an Egyptologist, i thought you explained it pretty well. The reasons there are many different ways to say her name is because Hireoglyphs do not have vowels so they really don't know lol. She actually is supposed to be the sky and is only depicted as a goddess sometimes. The reason she is depicted as a cow sometimes is that cows are their symbol for beauty because they have big eyes. This piece is really beautiful. I like the way you incorporated mixed media in this piece and as someone who personally feels uncomfortable with nudity, this was so tastefully done that it didn't make me uncomfortable. It was truly beautiful Baylee.

    Oh so sad that happens. I always wondered why I saw successful 'How to Draw' books in the clearance section on places like Jerry's Artarama. Now I see it's not cause the artist isn't good enough, just that the book publisher prob went under and they're getting rid of the remaining stock. (Edit: I didn't see your book at Jerry's but I saw some Christopher Hart ones)

      I used to work in the book industry. Books are often sold on a sale or return basis and every month in the bookshop we had lists of books that had been sitting for 6 months to be pulled to be returned to the publisher/distributor for credit. So for example we would return 5 unsold and keep one on the shelf. We had to return by 12 months to get credit. Stock in the distributor then if gets to 18 months to 2 years is considered remainder stock, and then is discounted. We often had the clearance book stores come in the warehouse and buy the remainer stick for them to sell, no returns, hence you see them at really low prices. Bookshops and distributors need to move stock to make room for new titles, unless it's really popular and has a reprint done.

    Also! Baylee I really hope that you see this, but with US copyright law since the company's gone backrupt I believe that all rights to your book go back to you, I would get a consultation with a lawyer about that "you must ask us before publishing any more how to draw books" but from what I understand that part of the contract is null and void since the company's gone under, so you can do what ever you want now.

    Baylee Jae, you need to ask questions. I saw an article. It was in a foreign country. It was about the Bankruptcy of F&W. If it is the same company, you need to find out! Why, because that F&W has sold its publishing rights to another company.
    I will try and find the website. That means your book could continue being published. You would receive nothing and most likely your copyright to the Artwork. This is awful.
    If it the same F&W.

    • @BayleeJae
      @BayleeJae  5 років тому +1

      Wait, last I checked, they hadn't sold publishing rights. Unless it varies by region. If that's the case and I don't receive any compensation, that's a bad situation. I assumed a new publisher would still owe royalties.

  • @tarabooartarmy3654

    I agree that self-publishing is definitely the route to go, especially for people who already have some sort of base. The book store and the publisher make the lion’s share, for sure. I once read that even Stephen King didn’t make much off his actual books because publishers give such tiny royalties per book. I think I read that a lot of authors make as low as 15 cents per book sold! That’s just nuts. I mean, you can make about 35 cents per book that is self-published at a 99 cent price point, so how are some traditionally published authors only making 15 cents on a book priced at $15? I mean, a lot of authors make more than that, but those poor authors making 15 cents... ugh.

    Sad to hear about the publisher going bankrupt. But I think you got a really good deal with your royalty rates. I'm a published illustrator, illustrated over 80 books worked with numerous publishers. My royalty rates vary between 0 and 5% at most, usually 0-3%. :( sure, I'm not an author but I feel illustrators are not appreciated enough!

    • @BayleeJae
      @BayleeJae  5 років тому +1

      Oh wow. Do you charge a fee per illustration/per page/per whatever? I always assumed illustrators didn't get any royalties except in certain cases.

    • @akiart496
      @akiart496 5 років тому

      Baylee Jae thank you for the reply. I get royalties for children's picture books, usually one off payments for educational books (text books and short illustrated stories to be used in schools- usually sold directly to schools and not in bookshops) , smaller royalties for activity books (puzzles, colouring, sticker books), chapter books depends on the publisher, sometimes lump sum, small royalty or price per illustration (small fee for black/white spot illustrations, more for full page internal illustrations and most for full covered colour illustrations). Also you usually can get more if you also do the graphic design of the books too. I was juggling at least 3-5 books at a time to make equivalent of minimum wage. Cut back a lot now (got kids now), I'm hoping to get back into it more, this time as an author too! Yep, if you want to make it big in publishing you gotta write the content too!!! Some of the series I've illustrated have sold over millions copies internationally, the author is very successful now with multiple houses and own other side businesses, totally deserves the pay, just wish illustrators are also acknowledged more!!! rant! Anyway, for you, i totally agree with the idea of going self published - you have enough devoted fans, you will sure have more success. Xx

    Thank you for the information on book publishing. I'm familiar with some of it, but not through personal experience, and not specifically art-related. I agree, you, Jazza, and many others were screwed over, but I'm also disappointed, because I loved Impact books, and while I can't think of any specific titles, I'm very familiar with having seen (and bought) magazines by F&W Media.
    Authors really should make much more from their books. I know the distributor, publisher, and everyone involved has to get their fair share,but it just seems the author is the key figure in the book business.
    I 💕love💕 your image of Nut, especially the starry skin. Excellent work for the challenge! Wishing you the best!

    Hey Baylee! Thanks for sharing all this info with us, I knew before that authors sadly don't make a lot of money off of their books, but I had no idea it was THAT bad. Good grief! Disclaimer: 95% of what I know about lawsuits and lawyers in general is based off of John Grisham novels! The other 5% is based on experience, about 20 years ago I booked a trip with Canada 3000 (remember them?) and had paid a trip deposit right before they went bankrupt. So I lost about $200. There ended up being a class action suit against them because there were so many people that lost money to the company. I was able to join that suit and it took probably 5 years or more, but I did end up getting most of my deposit back, I think I still lost about $30. Point being, I didn't have to pay anything to join this class action suit, I didn't have to put any effort or time in aside from responding to a few e-mails, and I got most of my money back. If there are lots of arts and crafts authors who lost money, especially if there are many who have their own platform like you and Jazza, maybe a similar class action suit will be made? If there is, that might be a way to get some of your money back without having to invest a whole lot of time or money. Maybe you could even negotiate for higher royalties on the e-book, or to have Impact stop publishing your book entirely so that you could have all rights to it? Again, please take everything I've just said with a HUGE grain of salt because I really know very little about lawsuits and such. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

    I'd recommend self pubbing through Amazon.
    You could also make your own books through print ninja. In conjunction with Amazon.
    You can also have libraries buy your book (or donate them) and contract through independent book stores.
    As an editor that works with self pubbed authors I'm biased. It's just way more freeing to have complete control over your creative endeavors.
