Go over it making a figure (ya know like the shape doll) and then do the details over that. It’s easier if you aren’t yet comfortable with drawing on an empty canvas in digital art

I remember learning about white watercolor in art class and I hope it’s alright if I explain in more detail what that’s talking about. (Keep in mind I’m only discussing why this advice is given, not that you should or shouldn’t follow it) The advice about avoiding white paint in watercolor (I’ve heard it extended to not mixing with your colors as well) has to do with the quality of the colors when they dry.
Seasoned watercolorists advise against using white for a couple of reasons, mainly because the transparency of watercolors has a more luminescent quality when used without adding the white pigments. White watercolor is more opaque and similar to gouache than it is to the other paints in a typical watercolor set, and it tends to dull the colors. You can achieve your light values by diluting the paint with water and the end result usually has a more vibrant quality than if white was used.
They advise against using it as a highlight color because it tends to activate the watercolor pigments that are already on the paper- which then mixes with the white and takes away from the brightness you were trying to add. For some reason using the original luminance of the paper does give a more natural illusion of light.
I’m not a stickler for it and really don’t care how people get their lighter values, I’m just explaining what the reasoning behind it is.
This advice for the most part applies to painters who want a realistic light in their paintings- landscape painters, portrait artists and still life. Comparing three paintings from school I’ve done where I used white watercolor as the highlight, one where I mixed with white for my lighter values and one where I’ve left just the white of the paper and not mixed with the white at all, the ones with white highlights has a flatter look, as if there’s less depth. The one with white mixed into the paint has a soft, lower contrast look (which I like, but doesn’t match the reference I used) and the other looks vibrant, with lighting that looks more natural and much closer to the reference.
HOWEVER! White watercolor is made for a reason. You most certainly can use it as much as you want, because it’s your work and if you like the effect the white paint creates, use it! It has its uses and can create its own effects. it’s useful for illustrations because if you need a lot of a lighter tone in order to make a storybook’s worth of paintings you can pre mix a lighter value. This way you can reproduce the same color across more images without having to constantly fiddle with pigment to water ratio and color matching against your previous pages. It creates a soft, diluted look as well which is exactly what a lot of artists look for.
It all comes down to how you want to experience your art journey. Try all that you can, follow advice one day and break the rules the next. decide if the advice works for your art or not. Love the art in this, your floral illustrations are some of my favorites. and the video was great 👍

My watercolor teacher wouldnt let us use white in class EVER. They also only ever let us use black in a greyscale painting; they never explained why so I kinda just figured it was the 'watercolor purests' reason.
(We also ran into problems because he told us to get cheap paints not student grade and the pigments weren't strong enough so we couldn't mix extreme darks)

Aside from your health (like posture, mental health, and such, which while isn't a rule, is still something I would say is more necessary than anything else), there are no rules to follow with art. There is no "cheating" or "real artists" concepts. If you don't follow these other art tips, I don't see it as a big deal. Art is open to all types of things and people, and not all of the advice you see applies to everyone. As an aside, props on the camera. As someone who has drawn cameras many times, they are a huge pain, haha, but you did really well :)
Edit: To clarify, there is no cheating in art. Illegally infringing on people's copyright is not cheating, that's breaking the law.

Flipping the canvas is honestly a fantastic way to determine what about a piece just doesn't seem right, but I certainly never remember to do it every time, haha! Also for the paintbrushes in water, if you do end up leaving brushes in your water cup (we're all at least a little guilty of this ;) ) then make sure the water level is below where the metal handle meets the wood. This will help your brushes last just in that the water wont destroy the glue holding your bristles together! :D

Yeah, drawing everyday should not be a chore. I always feel that's the worst piece of advice ever. But do try and draw at least once a week (unless you really don't feel like it) and if you want to try and boost a certain skill. Try a 30 day challenge. True, drawing everyday for 30 days will eventually feel like a chore, because it kinda is, but in this case your actually practicing a specific skill not just some vague overall betterment. That's when those challenges really help. Learning a specific skill and seeing your first and last pictures.

I draw everyday simply because I draw a lot, so it's weird if I don't do it. I make a webcomic so that kinda forced me to learn how to draw A LOT and be chill about it. It's actually really good practice too. So if you have any stories then give that a shot. Warning though, the first 20 or so pages are gonna be a PAIN. If you're not use to drawing full backgrounds repetitively then of course it will be. Nothings wrong with that, everything has a learning curve.

I want to got to uni (I’m Australia it’s basically college) for graphic design so I should probably draw more often but I do agree school is extremely important to me too (even though the whole concept of school is not very beneficial to my future) because if we don’t pass English or maths in on semester report we fail the grade and we have to repeat the level, otherwise it’s if you fail 2, for my school this was changed recently as there were some people in year ten who weren’t doing to great in school because they are not yet up to that level. I’m going into year 8 now and I find this quite stressful as my parents are always on my back about homework and doing well on my cats so I can procrastinate drawing very easily but I think it would be a good source of venting so I should continue to do it more. Sorry for that being boring but if you read it thank you!

Regarding the not using white watercolor:
The reason why people say that is because it tends to dull the picture, if that makes sense. Personally, I use it to add small highlights, to mix it with another color to make it pastel, or to make stars or something like that, but otherwise, I use the paper or a white gel pen. That's what I learned in my watercolor class last year.

One thing that helps me with comparing myself to others is something my older sister told me when I was really depressed one time. It was something along the lines of "if everyone used that logic, (I was saying I shouldn't be sad because other people had it worse than me) then only one person in the world could be sad and that doesn't make much sense." I apply that to most things now and even though I still compare myself sometimes, I usually stop once I think of that.

I built an angle wooden board and there is a lip on it as well it helps. I also hold my iPad Pro in my lap on an angle. I do draw and paint daily personally. I find you can only draw from the arm not just wrist when the art is big. I recently started flipping the canvas more but didn’t before. I seem to mainly need the flipping for people not everything else. The contrast one depends on the art really, what is the lighting like the style? I draw from life and photo reference. Every time I get a figurine I do a study. I advise buying animal toys and toy cars, etc and drawing from them. And also working while thinking in 3D. Yes very hard to not compare I agree use comparisons as inspiration but don’t get mad or obsessed. I advise doing studies from artists you like to learn how they do it. Some direct copy and also just copy the style and way it’s rendered but do your own original character. Such as trying to paint like frank franzatta digitally; colour pick the exact pallet and then paint your own original art trying to make it look like he did; not to KEEP his style exactly but to improve our own rendering and colour pallet use. Also no one can copyright a colour pallet... or art style actually but really we want our own styles. Still great for learning! Also the lightfast one is if you are selling/displaying the originals. And the white with watercolours is just strange watercolour elitism and is nonsense; I love mixed media personally! Fun video I do advise getting the tilted surface but when I film a traditional art UA-cam I go back to flat for filming purposes... so.... Also love the art in this video. The camera is fantastic! Keep up the great content!

Two tips were referring to life drawing which isn’t commonly used in illustration so I mean unless you’re an animation student or just interested in figure drawing !
Like drawing from the shoulder is mainly referring to going out to draw nude models and all irl cause the subject is bigger rather than looking at someone smaller on your laptop.
Also drawing from IRL isn’t referring to finished pieces it also refers to figure drawing and gives you the free alternative to learn from drawing quickly on the spot which helps in the long run.

As someone who paints primarily in watercolor I also use white acrylic paint in my paintings. Not because I don't have masking fluid but because it can achieve effects that watercolor *cannot*. The paper I use is not a pure bright white, and the acrylic paint I use is a high grade thick paint from Golden which is brighter than the paper itself. It has solid coverage and gives my paintings a type of definition and style that I can't achieve without it. Regardless of what purists say I like the way it looks. I don't mix it with the watercolors because that would desaturate my colors - it's used instead for finishing touches as pure highlights, edge lines, and to add impasto effects to water and clouds. It's just considered 'mixed media' at that point, which is fine by me :)

I think the value range one is more to have a nice balance of highlights, midtones and shadows. I remember my watercolor teacher mentioning this advice and it really does help and is something I have to do more often.
For exemple at the start of the class most of my paintings didn’t have very dark shadows making the figures mostly midtones and highlights. When I started experimenting and not being afraid of layering I got richer shadows that gave a better sense of volume and added more interest to the peice. Obviously this also depends on your style but for figure and potraits with a more realistic approach I think it pretty good advice.

    1. I am a wrist drawer too
    2. I wondered why I draw with my sketchpad on my lap, and then when I go to film the final piece I will have it flat but the base drawing is already down :D Kind of a tilted up canvas while Im drawing the proper sketch
    3. I alternate between holding the pencil far back and at the tip, the tip is better for detailed work and further back because I use coloured pencils, is better for layering.
    4. Yay one that I do :D I draw every day! It can be super hard because I have a 2 year old and I post youtube videos every wednesday but because drawing is my job I need to do it every day ^-^
    5. Don't really flip the canvas unless I'm drawing on procreate and even then sometimes I forget
    6. Rarely ever use black, for the actual piece but I do use it in the galaxies
    7. I don't use real life, because most of my drawings are cartoons or fan art
    8. I TRY not to compare myself to other artists, I did actually make a video about that topic xD the advice is a lot easier to give to others than to follow
    9. I use prismacolor pencils but I use a sealer spray which can help for wax bloom and lightfastness (I made that word up)
    10. I don't paint much anymore, but when I did I always left my brushes soaking, one of the reasons I hated painting was the cleanup
    11. that seems like a silly rule, medium shaming xD (the white paint in watercolor rule)
Lastly, I really liked this piece and I liked that she wasn't really reflected she was more, inside the camera to me like a tiny person, and I thought that was super cool, I also like how it seems to pop out of the page, it's not really flat! Great job Baylee Jae this is my first time really watching you and I'll definitely be back for more :D

The interesting thing about drawing from real life is not just about using "real life references" instead of illustrations/your imagination. It also trains your eyes to transcribe 3D elements onto a flat surface. If you draw from a photo, you already have a flat picture as a base, that part of the job is already done for you/your eyes! (i hope it can still be useful to someone even if i'm veeery late)

Strange about the values... What I see more often is the contrary, to not use every value but to take a part of the scale, close to one end, some like 4 values next to it, and work with it. Or take the two ends together but not all the middle range if you want something more dramatic. Marco I don't remember his last name, a UA-camr to and a teacher on skillshare, explained it way better than me.

I see this piece as nature being all around us with its beauty and healing power, but we are too absorbed in technology to notice it and its almost as if its right in front of us, but we can't access it. And it can be a metaphor for happiness too. And, I know you didn't have a set meaning, but I love your juxtaposition of the lively and beautiful flowers vs the cold, hard metal of the camera and this sad person, surrounded by all this life, but unable to be a part of it. It's lovely.

To find errors in traditional art, i usually take a picture of the art on my phone. It helps me see the peice from faraway, which helps me see my proportion mistakes right away. It's just easier for me to see mistakes because im use to looking at the drawing close up. So, when i look at the art like a viewer i can usually see mistakes quicker.

This has been changing as of late, but back when I first started getting serious with my art, I've always heard people strongly discouraging any kind of tracing, even if it was just for learning purposes and you have 0 intention of framing it as a project or a print. I don't trace all day every day, but when I'm having a particularly hard time trying to get a good idea of how something should look, I usually put it onto Krita, lower the opacity, and start sketching and tracing the object to give me a better idea of how it should be drawn. After that, I usually have a better grasp on how to structure the object that I can apply to future projects.

I feel like it makes sense to draw from your wrist if you're doing fine detail stuff or if you're working on paper that's kinda smallish like 9 in. x 12 in or smaller. It is super useful to draw from my shoulder when I'm drawing on a bigger surface (like 18 x 24 or larger) and specifically when laying down those first the big shapes.

  • @TheCameraLuvsMe

I think the thing with art advice is really to take whatever works best for you. One of the advice you mentioned that I haven't been able to implement either is "draw from life", most of the stuff I'm inspired by and want to draw don't have easily accessible references. I'd be so bored just drawing still life objects or my dad all the time lol. (and I'm not gonna get him or anyone else to do random poses for me either). Plein air painting in public carries its own challenges as well. I think "draw everyday" is one of the rules you don't have to do but it definitely has its benefits. And for someone as undisciplined as me if I don't give myself that target I tend to fall into not drawing at all for weeks. So again, whatever works best for the artist is the only rule that matters.

i admire your ambition, seriously. it seems like your schedule is already so grueling that it'd be hard to change it. however, you seem the type to do things you set your mind to. also, i think light/dark/shading advice is a good rule in general to follow, but sometimes they have more to do with personal style or the materials you use. social media and the internet are changing the so called 'rules' everyday. in ten years i think the rules will be totally different if not less stringent/more flexible. also, i asked myself a few questions when i decided to branch out artistically from writing. am i going to let the gatekeepers decide what i do and how i do it? the answer? nope. i wanted to draw/paint/make music despite a few things. being on a fixed income, having zero experience, limited mobility, (i have cerebral palsey and my right side is a bit sketchy. get it? ha!) so i do everything one handed, including typing and playing a sythesizer. my 1st brush was a mouse. i started 'drawing' with ms paint which is now discontinued. anyway, you rock!

Idk. I have a weird way of looking at things like this. Everyone is taught different things along the lines of art. You learn what’s best for your improvement and ways to help you improve. Not everyone learns the same way. Which means not everyone has the same process of doing art either.
It’s almost as if you’re a child and you get closer to the tv. Your eyes want to adjust more to the screen so you get closer. Not all kids do this but it’s a habit of some. Almost like art. Not everyone does the same type of art in the same type of style. Everyone develops habits of how they start their process of making art , looking at art, learning art and even before they get into that position of making art.
I know for suuuure I have a habit of getting super close to my screen when doing art and slouching when I know I shouldn’t. But I’m stubborn and that’s just how I developed over the years and my art turns out fine lmao. I didn’t learn any less or more than someone else. I just adjust myself to be comfortable in my own process.

I always like my from life drawings of people than my ones from something like "line of action" (a figure drawing website) they feel so much more real

Agree that we shouldn't restrict ourselves in artistic expression, but there are reasons to back "rules". Another viewer gave great explanation why one would avoid using white paint. Some dedicated Transparent water colorists avoid pigments that tend towards opacity. These paintings have amazing luminosity. But if that isn't important in one's art, then use whatever opaque paints with watercolor that gives you your desired results.

I guess I don't follow this advice either lol. I wonder if the people who recommend drawing with your shoulder, not just limited wrist movements, generally work very large? I make small paintings and that just does not seem practical lol. A desk at an angle is so hard to work with, not only for laying your markers on like you said, but making paints drip the wrong way! Really great advice at 10:20 that copic markers are not lightfast, and if you use fugitive supplies to add a note in any original art listing to not store it in light, and that the real use for copics is to create prints. Great video!

    Finally, this video appears!
    1. Draw on a certain angle, well in my issue I have really bad eyesight, I am miophy -5, so when I draw on a flat surface it makes my line art tilted, it like the head is bigger on the other side and the eyes are wider on one side. So, every time I draw I put the sketchbook on my lap or my table with a tilted surface.
    2. Draw every day, yes I agree to Not draw every day. Because it makes me like forced to draw and the creativity become less. Just take your time, when your idea pops out you can draw.
    3. Fliping canvas on digital drawing, hmm, I usually do that because for some reason I can not draw both sides well, It is like the control to do other side is not flow smoothly, like if you feel like to draw from right side is easy, then to do the left side you must flip the canvas to have the same flow as you do on the right side.
    4. real image as reference, nah, I can browse to pinterest. There are tons of references.
    5. don't compare yourself to other artist, hmmm, I do compare myself to other artist but not too much. It is just like, "oh, she is adding the highlight more in here, she do the composition like this,". This can prevent myself to be self-righteous, there are no fixed rule in making art. Everybody has their own style. Just experiment with your artwork and make it unique.
    6. don't use white paint, hmm, I use my white paint or gel pen to add more effect. It is not cheat. Art is about creativity. If it can make it good, why not?
    Thanks for your advice, Baylee!

That thing about drawing from life is actually not about using it as reference. It's about enhancing your own ability to recognize what looks right and what looks wrong. Shading, anatomy, perspective, the more you draw from real life the more you have an instinct for it.
Also, when you mention that a photo is basically the same as the real thing the way an illustration is not, is not really accurate. A photo will always be a photo, and in 2D. Maybe you recognize the famous "this is not a pipe", I think it was called, and it's really interesting thinking about it in that way. ( I still use photo reference all the time though! )
You keep doing what your're doing and your art looks really good. We don't need to follow every advice there is. I just feel very passionate about life drawing haha. ✨

The repetitive wrist movements are really bad for the muscles. Using the whole arm alleviates some of that stress on the wrist.
