ixBrawl he means average in a tournament setting. 800-900 is pretty average, at least where I live
950 is the average rating on chess.com

I just hit 1500 today and hearing him say "when I mean lower rated I mean like 1500..." broke my heart a lil cant lie. On the bright side atleast I can enjoy the journey for a long time

Well this old guy in a cloak said that there was an old legend where if you put a pawn at the other end of the board, you can cheat death and bring back the queen. But after I sacrificed my bishop after foreseeing my queen's capture, he said that only one had ever learned how to do it and that no white-side player would ever tell me. So my question is: can I manipulate the Intergalactic Chess Federation to support my rating climb by fixing games, or do I focus on saving my queen first in-game by slaughtering all the pawns?
Levy, I've found you through Hikaru's channel (which I found and got interested in chess in general through PogChamps) and I gotta say, this kind of educational content is pretty top tier. You can make your ideas clear and in a way that's easy to perceive.
Your openings video helped me a lot with one of the things I struggled with the most and I was really happy and proud that I found e4 when I paused the video after thinking for a little bit too! Loving your content, man
I was staring at e4 but I was doubting myself. I guess my subconscious knows chess better. I DIDN'T know why I wanted to play e4, just looked nice. 😅😀
Now i am using this rule more like in defensive way, to tell if my opponent attack is dangerous and i need more pieces to defend my king 🤔
but i will try to count pieces in attack as well

One other piece of advice is to close lines. In the last example he showed how the e4 pawn push opens the line for the dark square bishop. Thinking from the opposite perspective of a defender, you can also look for pawn moves or exchanges that remove lines of access for the attacker. Looking even deeper, opening the right lines can also help defenders by allowing them to bring their pieces to the defence. Also exchanging pieces can also potentially cause an attack to run out of steam as well.

Hey man idk if you're gonna see this. But I've been binging a TON of your videos as well as Hikaru's, as well as playing a ton of online chess (ironically it had NOTHING to do with that Netflix show, I genuinely just happened to get interested in the game right when it came out).
But basically I was in a slump and felt like my game wasn't improving. But then when I paused at 5:15 to see which piece is best to move and not only chose the correct original piece but then knew which order to attack my pieces with afterwards, and then I un-paused the video to see that I was exactly right. I literally jumped out of my seat. Man I'm so happy right now. Thanks for the content and the continued help it's sincerely appreciated!

Usually i just couldn't find the finishing/killing move. I lined up my attacking piece, break through, but then my attack stopped.
When i checked the engine, there is actually a mating idea, but i just missed it.

The exception to the rule of +2: when you learn all the possible configurations for checkmate. This allows a lot of sneaky endgame maneuvers.

3:40 its stoppable if you take the knight after which black would still have 3 pieces for the queen but I'm guessing Qxg5 Qxg5+ then say Kh7 and for example f4 with ideas of rooklift

Nice video. I think Tal calls this concept the assault ratio and based on what you taught, a good rule of thumb is for a potentially successful attack, the assault ratio should be a : d , where d = no. of defenders, a = no of attackers and a = d + 2.
When you sacrifice, how do you know to keep the knight or bishop?
Imo, calculate the more forcing variation. The sacrificing piece who has a threat and forces enemy to accept the sacrifice might be the winning sacrifice piece ^_^
closed up board (fixed pawns, not many sacrifices or trades, positional play) do not help your bishops shine, knights are generally better in such positions. In an open board bishops are dominating, since they are controlling more squares. Also having the bishop pair is more useful especially near the endgame than having bishop and a knight, so if you can negate your opponent the bishop pair by forcing a trade, it is generally good. Knights are really useful when being near the enemy king and can threat forks, so if a trade is happening near the enemy king, you can consider trading a bishop rather than a potentially great knight that can create more threats. Also knights can coordinate with your queen generally better than a bishop so if you have a queen and can see a quick attack with a knight you totally want to keep at least one of your knights in the game.
edit: all these are general advices, of course a forcing variation as stated above, or a nice position after the trade is the first thing you are looking at
Bishop is better in the endgame (longer range, so can attack from safety), while knight is better in middle game (when the board is more cluttered). At least in my experience.
Assuming you've got a queen involved in your attack, you'll want to keep whichever one can easily get to a square where they control either h7 or g7, this will coordinate with your queen to deliver checkmate. Obviously you'll also need to look at the actual position and try to calculate and visualise what will happen as well. If you find one of the pieces don't work, don't rush (if you still have time) calculate the other line as well to see if it works. In bullet just sac first and calculate afterwards 😀 make sure you are also using your opponent's time to think as well.

Question: At 5:20 you give us this nice attacking position to analyze and find the key move. I was able to look at the position for about 30 seconds and come up with the correct e4 pawn push to allow the c1 Bishop a sac possibility at h6. And I figured _this must be the move_ . BUT: How should my thinking process go from here? In a blitz game I'd be confident enough to just play it, but in a longer game, say 15 minutes or 30 minutes or longer per side, how should I analyze this position to convince myself I'm right and not blundering something? E.g., I saw 1.e4 dxe4 2. Bxe4 but I did not see 2..f5, and I wasn't sure how to think: What are black's defensive resources?

Thanks, Levy. I will definitely try to use this. Another topic that is so basic that a lot of teachers might overlook it, is simple calculation--particularly in a blitz game--where being uncertain of how to count when you are attacking a square that has several defenders, can waste valuable time and wreck your chances, due to second-guessing yourself. I find myself in this situation every day, and I always kick myself because it's so freaking simple, or is it?
The number of attackers needs to be more than the number of defenders to be successful. Don't forget the value of the pieces as well. If you attack a pawn that's defended by another pawn with two knights you will be the last one standing, but you'll be giving up a knight for two pawns, which is generally a bad trade in the opening/middlegame. When making captures/recaptures you should generally start by capturing with the lowest value pieces first as well for the same reasons above. You should also keep an eye out for zweichenzug (in between moves where instead of making a predictable recapture someone throws in an unexpected move like a check.
After each game look through your moves and take your time to examine the position and figure out if the moves were correct.

I think Qf4 is good too in the second game! same idea and black can't defend with Bg5 because the pawn is pined

Great video, but I feel it glossed over an important point that's quite hard for beginners and intermediates to understand, which is when a piece counts as a defender. In your Gotham Guide there was a game where the player who was on the defensive had what looked to me (1500 chess.com) like several defenders but you mentioned the rule of +2 and said "these pieces aren't defenders; they're just near the king but they're not defending" and I thought "how do you tell the difference?". I was hoping this video would illuminate this issue but I found it didn't really. In your third example you even say "five pieces versus... whatever it is". What is it, Levy, WHAT IS IT??

Really Nice Rule to attack. It would be interesting if you could also explain when this +2 Rule doesn't hold true and how to decide if it is worth going for an attack and trying to sacrifice material to get a +2 attack
Small tip for you, if you know that your opponent can't bring more defenders in few moves (almost always true in closed positions) (I also noticed that Levy's examples are having a closed or fixed center) applying the "rule of +2" will be a great idea to apply to know if it will be a successful attack or it will be a fail.
