I played a game where my opponent couldn't win a rook and 6 vs rook and 1 against me. He lost 4 pawns, we traded rooks and it was and h and g vs h. Traded a pawn and it was just king and rook pawn v king and that's a super easy draw.
Who said that these 4 pawns are connected? You may have them scattered and no able to support each other, but then if you have such a position then it’s time for checkers, or even darts!
Opening: this is when my pieces are not out yet, so I cannot hang them. Middle game: hanging pieces left and right. End game: this is when I have no pieces left to hang.
Just yesterday i plyed a rook and pawn vs rook endgame where i was up an h pawn, my king and rook were huddled together escorting the pawn. His king was close to my rook and everytime i pushed my pawn he had the chance to sac his rook for the pawn, i'd reapture with the king and he'd capture my rook with his king drawing the game. But he never saw it. I was hi-fiving myself the entire game for playing this brilliant endgame, but then i hit analysis and i was 😱😱
Video idea: let lower subs play higher subs, if and when the lower rated sub gets in to a losing position Levy take over for the losing side and show how to save a losing position

Day 8: Of requesting Levy to cover opposite coloured bishop endgames. Especially when you have a slight material advantage of being up by two or three pawns against your opponent and you both have opposite coloured bishops as well.
@@JSamad It's not so simple, since your opponent can blockade your pawns with his king and bishop. Or try to sacrifice his bishop for all of your pawns leaving you with no winning chances. Imo outta all the piece endgames - bishop endgames are the hardest in general. Cuz unlike queen, rook or knight endgames, one bishop alone only controls 32 squares of the chessboard max - aka 50% of the board Unlike the other pieces who can control any square on the board.
@@JSamad I have encountered a lot of positions with +2; +3; +4 pawns in opposite color bishop endgames which were draws unfortunately. Generally when the passed pawns are split, you have winning chances, if they are connected you have less winning chances
I’d love to hear him explain it more in depth but until that happens, there’s something called tablebase which is essentially a chess engine for the endgame although I find it to be more instructive than an engine for mid game as the moves generally make sense as much modern endgame strategy is engine backed anyways. Anyways, if you’re trying to study particular endgame scenarios, I suggest checking that out

This happened to me once in a game and i couldn't do it low on time. Was really frustrated and learned how to do it. Its easy to get and a valuable lesson i strongly recommend learning it

If the rook stays on the f file, notice there is always Rd5 for white to keep Black's king cut off and to be ready for Rf5 cutting Black's rook from the pawn. Let's consider the following line: 1. ... Rf3 2. Rd5 Rf4 3. Rf5 Black's king cannot reach f8, neither can rook, so pawn promotes no matter what

But, "you drive for show, but putt for 'dough'!", The small details in putting(finishing out),is the important part of it, just like mastering rook and pawn chess endgames. Had a terrifying game yesterday where I came back from losing to get king and queen vs king, backed him into a corner with almost no time on the clock, and couldn't for the life of me figure out how to mate without stalemate. Eventually got it, though not before my opponent asked "did you not do the drill" 😂
Rook endgame was the first thing I have learned in chess. Still amazed how easy it sometimes is to trick someone with a simple rook + king checkmate at 1100 even from the losing material standpoint.
22:10 Levy, the main problem is not to read and understand ending variations from wikipedia. The main problem is to remember this stuff for longer than 1 hour. Who needs this rook and pawn endgame if 99.98% of games ends in a different scenario? I just don't understand how to study these endings if they seem so useless that I can't explain myself why should I even learn this stuff, especially when most of the variations are solved by some weird counter-intuitive algorithms with different cases. Isn't it's better to just solve some lichess ending puzzles and play vs stockfish some random endings? I find myself forgot the solution of Lucena ending while typing this comment by the way LOL
You are just not at that level yet. I remember watching this video a long time ago and filling the same way. But now im 2000 and endgames are super likely to happen so im rewatching this video to be prepared. Maybe go watch more middle games videos and go grind. You will get there eventually
Hey Gotham! Thanks for the video! For you, or anyone else in the comments, I had a question about getting my rook to the sixth rank in the Vancura position. I like drilling endgame exercises against the computer on chess.com, and when I plugged in the Vancura position, I found that white was refuting my attempts to get to the sixth rank. The way they would do this was after 1. ...Ra1, white would play Kf4, with the intention to reach the e5 square. After 2. Kf4, Rf1+ 3. Ke5, Rf6, white has a winning tactic with 4. Rg8+, Kxg8 5. Kxf6, and the pawn is free to queen. I wanted to know if giving white the extra tempo by playing something like 2. ...Rc1 in order to reach the 6th rank instead of checking to reach the sixth rank was okay. Thanks!
