    If I had a nickel for every time I saw someone post in a Final Cut Pro forum/group about being stuck in the Precision Editor in Final Cut Pro I'd be rich! Now we can all just send them this video to help them figure it all out. Have you been mystified by the Precision Editor in your early days of choppin' broccoli in Final Cut Pro???

    Once again something I never used that could save me a lot of frustration. I do a lot of really crazy transition between clips sometimes and some of the fine tuning has always been trial and error. Having a better view into the transitions should really help me now. Thanks!

    I use a lot of wipe transitions, and I have wanted to see the edges of clips under them. This is a useful way to do that.

    I often get myself into the precision editor when I didn’t intend to, and got frustrated trying to get back to the regular timeline. For example, if I double click on a compound clip to examine it, I’m sure I didn’t realize that I had double clicked a second time - which placed me in the precision editor. And I didn’t know how to get out of it, so I just exited the compound clip, then went back in.
    I never bothered researching how to enter and exit the precision editor - nor did I commit to memory that this was called the “precision editor” so that I’d know what to google.
    Bottom line - thank you! I learned a lot, and appreciate you taking the time to create this video!

      Thanks for the kind words! I guess the Escape key is always a quick way to get out of the Precision Editor - but yes, not many know what it is but many have gotten stuck in it. Haha. Thanks for watching!

    I don't think I will use the precision editor much but I love that it exists! Totally didn't know about it. Thank you for the knowledge!

    Sorry for some of my negative comments the last months - I was so frustrated with the programm.
    I'm in 16 seconds now and this is the exact feeling I so often had.
    Learned a lot from you Matthew and needed to get this off my chest

      Appreciate you owning up to that, David! We can get so passionate about our work, our art and the tools we use to get s**t done and at the end of the day we're all human - we have tempers, we have really powerful emotions and sometimes it gets vented to allow us some release, to allow us to find community that shares in our frustrations... I get it. I've been there.
      The goal of this channel is to build a community where we can all help each other avoid those moments where our emotions get the best of us, and I think things are definitely headed in that direction. So thank for being a part of it and THANK YOU for deploying self-awareness and apologizing for past comments. I love that.

    It's not really a 'precision editor' until you can adjust both the A & B side separately to different points at the same time and preview the change before committing. For example, I want to take 2 frams off the A die but add five frames to the incoming B side, see it playback, and eithr commit to that or make further changes. I hate to say it (And Lord, you have no idea *how much* I hate to say it) but trimming in Avid Media Composer is still the Gold Standard.

    Hi Matthew I have an issue with FCPX for past many days and i am not able to get a solution for it :::: When i Shoot a video on my Go Pro 9 at 50FPS ( With my Voice/Audio) and when i edit it on FCPX 10.6.8 on a project with timeline of 23.98p the audio or my voice sounds different and weird on the other hand if i use the same footage (Shot on 50FPS) on a timeline of 50p it sound correct and exact like my own voice.... I hope you got the point ....Please Help me to fix this issue... as this was never a case when i Was using Premier Pro 4 Years Back.... ( I normally shoot on 50FPS on my Go pro as i want few slow mo shots to be used in my final edit on a 23p timeline and also to cut the flicker as i shoot a lot indoors with lights of the location flickering ) Please Help Guide Suggest where I am Goin Wrong .... Hope to Hear from You as You are the master of FCPX

    Hello, kind Sir!
    I wanted to pick your brain about something FCPX related that I haven't been able to figure out. I'm an audio engineer and a video editor and I have a TON of plugins installed. The first time I open Final Cut or make the mistake of Option+clicking FCPX and I have to scan all my Audio Units it takes upwards of 4 hours and sometimes I have to Force Quit the application because it refuses to advance and it can get stuck reading a specific Audio Unit for a whole day. Do you know of a workaround or a way in which I could quickly open Final Cut or make the Audio Units read faster without having to physically moving the Audio Unit .component files out of their folder?
    (Non-related to the Ventura Update, it's just incredibly slow T_T)
    Thanks!

      @matthewTobrien  Рік тому +1

      Unfortunately I don't know an effective fix for this. I had made a video earlier this year about issues a lot of editors were having with the Validating Audio Units stage of an FCP launch (myself included) and the solution I proposed was a workaround at the time that was a huge inconvenience to musicians and audio engineers. Apple has since released updates to FCP and macOS Ventura that resolved that Validating Audio Units issue for many of us.
      The first thoughts I have is to make sure macOS and FCP are up-to-date and to make sure each of your Audio Units/plug-ins are up-to-date as well.
      Apple did a lot of under the hood stuff to prep for the FCP for iPad launch and it even broke/messed up some of their tried and true audio effects that were built on older architecture. I've been hearing a lot of complaints that the new versions of some classic effects are making audio sound worse/not as good as the original effects did.

      Thank you for your response! @matthewTobrien
      Having been forced to reinstall FCPX several times over small periods of time has forced me to come up with a janky method that has been the most effective:
      Here's my process, for any audio engineers or musicians people with a lot of plugins:
      Whenever I encounter a part of the scan that is taking way too long, I usually write it down on a piece of paper or a text document for reference. I then force-quit FCPX and start the process again. If it still gets stuck on that specific plugin I force quit FCPX again. I create a folder on my desktop called "AU Backup" or something along those lines and move my Audio Units that cause conflict with FCPX to that folder. After this painstaking process, you're basically left with a smoother FCPX "boot-up". After I'm done with FCPX, I quit the app and return the Audio Units to the same folder (taking care that I use the same folder structure) so I can use them on my DAWs. I don't really use audio plugins in Final Cut Pro X since I usually work audio on Pro Tools or Ableton Live.
      NOTE: IF an audio unit gets stuck continuously when loading for the first time but it's a plugin you really want to use in FCPX, there's a chance it eventually works. You just need to wait it out, with the occasional "Force Quit". This has worked for me in the past regarding stubborn Audio Units.
      Thanks again for your response. I really appreciate it! Love your content!

    So that leads me to another question, what is the point of using storylines above the main storyline to house clips? 😅

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  Рік тому

      You have to use them to add transitions between any clips above the Primary Storyline. And if you want move those clips around and have them behave and interact like they would in the Primary Storyline, they have to be in a Storyline. I use them constantly and on occasion don’t need to.

    I'm stuck on a different kind of screen and I have no idea how I got there. The timeline is all striped and only one section of the cut I wanted to make is clear. It shows two vertical white lines with arrows on each side. What is unnerving is I have no clue how I got there and how I get out. Apple REALLY needs to fix those kind of things. It's untenable that you are in the middle of editing and suddenly you are stuck on some screen because you hit a key with NO UI indication about how to get out.
    p.s.: I think it has something to do with the clips I was reviewing in the browser. I clicked something and it showed me where the clip is on the compound clip. However, I had another project open for which to actually use the clip. FCPX just opened a new project (as the compound clip) and switched the timeline to that. I had to close that project.

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  5 місяців тому

      There are left and wife arrows at the top center of the timeline window - can you click on those to navigate to your previous project?

    • @Ernoburger
      @Ernoburger 5 місяців тому

      @@matthewTobrien Ah yes, thank you that did it! I accidentally clicked on the compound clip symbol in one of my small clips in my timeline and FCPX jumped to the original compound clip and switched timelines on me. I suppose the unexpected switch is what threw me for a loop.
