"You were so preoccupied with whether or not you could you didn't stop to think if you should!" 🦖 Haha... I don't know what the hell I'm doing, but this big idea popped into my brain and there suddenly was this really exciting puzzle to solve and although I'm not the first person in the world to try to digitize VHS in the highest quality possible, maybe I'm the first to make a three part series for UA-cam documenting using Final Cut Pro 7 to do it? Anyway, I hope you enjoy and tell me your stories about the glory days of FCP7 in the replies!

Great channel. I have been transfering old film and video ever since a DVD recorder first came out. I have been digitizing VHS footage by using Panasonic dual DVD/VHS Recorders.A DMR-EZ48V has HDMI output. I know that it is a little convoluted but it has been working for many years. The VHS tape is transfered to a DVD and then I use Handbrake to rip the data. This method is really nice because you can set it and forget it. It will even automaticly finalize the disks. Resolution and quality are pretty much identcal to VHS, although uprezing is possible . I can now use current Final Cut with no problems. This method alows me to transfer without tying up my puter. And the bonus is that you have a digital back-up with the DVD that you can reproduce a file for further editing or what ever.

Wow, cool video. I've been paralyzed from a surfing accident for 25 years now and I have partial movement in my right arm only. When I started editing video in 2001, I used FCP and had various DV and HDV decks. I started with the first FCP then all the way up to FCP 7, todays video editors have it so easy now and they don't realize how much time, effort and patience it took to edit with tape. I now use Resolve to edit because it's a lot like FCP 7 but much more powerful and better for color grading. Your video brings back good memories for me and many others, but I'm glad we don't have to use tape all the time anymore. Thanks and keep the videos coming brother. Bobby D,

So funny you should say this because one of the other videos I'm going to make related to this series is something to the effect of... what if you were a UA-camr like UA-cam is today (shooting and editing with ease with our current tools) but it was 2006. So you're shooting on a Sony Handycam that records to miniDV and you're editing on a Mac with Final Cut Pro and trying to make UA-cam videos like we all make today. Obviously not the same quality but what would the workflow look like if you had to get a video made every couple of weeks. I'm not articulating this well so I need to figure it out because coming up with a good title is going to be key.
If UA-cam was like it is today but in 2006 what would the workflow look like for UA-camrs to get videos made. Haha. Something like that.

Aw man, this brings back memories - I used to do this as part of my job, we'd do digital archiving of people's old tapes. FCP 7 - what a workhorse. Far and away the best option at the time. I do love FCPX now, and enjoy the streamlined workflow / magnetic timeline / real time playback etc. but FCP 7 will always have a special place in my heart.

Love how everything in high-end video gear back in '08 looked like little Mac Pro towers (like my G-RAID backup drive bay). Great idea to film this! I might have to steal. I've currently got my 2008 Mac Pro sitting next to my desk, strictly to try to set an old Steinberg audio interface to run as a slave ADAT set of preamps (Steinberg gave up on updating drivers after OS X 10.11) Might film it! The typewriter was a stroke of genius.

@@matthewTobrien Oh cool! Do you think the older Apple displays are worth it (if one finds a good deal on them)? I'm tempted! I'm getting desperate for a 4K+ display, but can't $3000 right now.
Thanks for the motivational words re: video. My first attempts to get the interface into the correct slave mode ended in failure. Not sure if it's worth making a vid if I achieve nothing… or maybe it could be the best way to solicit help from viewers. OK, you talked me into it: I'll make the vid!😅

Whoa yes FCP7 nostalgia. We used to edit entire episodes of the nationally broadcast show “Passtime” on the Speed Channel, using multicam in FCP7. Glory days.
I still have FCP7 installed on my 17” 2007 MacBook Pro, and it still works.
I think I still have my FCP6 install disks, but not sure if I still have the 3 big print manuals, which I read constantly. 😍
SVHS : as far as I remember , it’s an upgraded and separate format than VHS, with more lines of resolution, and it requires special SVHS tapes. 🤔 So it doesn’t theoretically make standard VHS tapes look better, but it will play VHS tapes. And the SVHS connection is theoretically better.

    • @matthewTobrien

So cool, Ben! I was a bit too late out of film school to get into the thick of episodic or feature workflows with FCP7 (or earlier) and I went all-in on FCPX upon release - kinda wish I had had another year or so to work in high end FCP7 workflows.

I digitize VHS tapes directly in FCPX using a Sony PD170P camera that has analog inputs and a DV output. The conversion happens directly with the pass-through signal. The advantage is that it corrects all the sync errors of the old video tapes. 😉

But my 2011 Mac mini just died last week 💀 having been hammered for 13 years 😳 l have an M1 MacBook Pro and a PC work station but seems like there is no work around to open, convert, run FCP except to buy a new old Mac. Any recommendations or advice ? I have a 1tb Sata ssd with El Capitan and FCP7 installed that l pulled from my dead Mac Mini. Would you recommend a Mac Pro 2013 ? I know at least from your video it will work 😊

Cool vid! Final Cut Pro 7 tops out at macOS 10.12 Sierra. However, there is a patch/hack out there that can let you run it on 10.13 High Sierra. See if I can find it and post the name/link…

    • @fhturner3

@@matthewTobrien The odd digit macOS releases tended to be cutoffs back in those days, and High Sierra was a threshold for a lot of things, including a whole bunch of 2009-2011 Macs. So it would make sense if FCP 7 went up to HS, but not natively. The fact that Retroactive allows it to run means it can't have been far off. But of course Apple wouldn't want to allow its old NLE continue to be supported when the new one was out!
