Finally, people are making more and more aftermarket stuff for the Frontier.
Yes and this is a welcome mod for sure. Thanks for watching
Oh my God he'll yes. I've been looking for years for stuff for my 2018 Pro4X. Sweet
Thanks for watching!!
If you’re working alone and even if you’re not, don't even try to install the new bolt and bracket on the tailgate by jiggling it around. TAKE THE TAILGATE OFF, it takes less than 5 minutes, and you can put the new bolt and bracket in with ease and it reinstalls in another couple of minutes. I messed with it until I realized it really was not a one-man job. Installation over, works fine. Good investment.
Good job! Great suggestion and thanks for watching!
When I saw you "drop" the tailgate it brought back a memory. I dropped mine once, and didn't realize one end of the tailgate was bounced out of the bracket. It actually closed when I lifted it up but later I realized it wasn't "right".
Yesterday, I ordered the same struts you got. I went with two sets. I think it will actually help them BOTH last longer; assisting each other and taking stress off. I basically got them free after using a coupon I had. Thanks for the video!
Good decision to buy 2. Glad the video help you! Thanks for watching!!
DIY Willy, thanks again for this video. Except for the seller only sending me ONE kit when I ordererd two, it was exactly what you said it would be.
The bolt that goes through the bracket that you said would be a challenge, definitely was a challenge! So I just used the original factory bolt, which starts without threads in the hole, and it works just fine. AND, of course, I dropped the small silver screw that holds the taillight, but it only took me about 5 minutes to find it! Lastly, that little "c spring clip" went flying into the grass. That was a little more time consuming as I had to run to ACE to get another one. Figured out a little trick for the "next time": tie a small piece of colored thread to the clip. If it flies off, it's easier to spot! When it's done, just clip off the excess. One last comment: The clip that holds the "shock" at the top is very poorly designed. I used a zip tie to snug it to the attachment point. I'm not going to get a second one. I've been seeing a lot of negative comments about doing that and also Amazon is crediting me for the one I didn't get. If things would have gone well for me, the whole job would have taken under 15 minutes.
Where did you find the RH tailgate option on that kit? I only can find the LH one... but would definitely add both if I can.
@rickwhitfield7617 it's the same kit for both sides. But I'm only using one side now (it's been a year and I can't recall why!)
I wish you can come and do mine I wish I was close around you I'm here in Mobile Alabama I have a 2009 Frontier😂 good job you done
Hello Calvin, That would be a great road trip. I would like to install it for you, however we’re pretty far apart. I’m sure you can handle it. Good luck!
Thanks for watching!!
just got frontier ,will install this ,thank you sir you made my day
Glad you liked the video.. Thanks for watching!!
Nicely done. The Rough Country pistons appear to be a bit more dampened up top... but they are out of stock. I just bought the same one you installed vs waiting.
Thanks for watching!!
Thank you. Good video, to the point. Thank you for sharing...
Hello Roland, Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching!!
I would definitely add this to my step dad’s Hilux and my Frontier. 💯
Already installed hood struts.
Hello Mando, Glad you like the video. The install is pretty straightforward but not sure about the Toyota. Should be similar.. Thanks for watching!!
GREAT. THX FOR THE VIDEO
Thanks for watching!!
This mod its a plus my dad installed on his nissan and mine. Awesome
Yes works very well. But I hear it’s best to use one on both sides.
@@DIYWilly it might last longer.
Thanks for your guidance. Worked like a charm. Installed in less than 30 minutes. You were right about lining up the bolt on the tailgate. In my case, I had to pull the tailgate to me. Your warning was a good heads up.
I’m glad the video helped you. Thanks for watching
thanks a lot it was a quick installation for me
Glad to hear the video helped with the installation. Thanks for watching!!
"look how hard that falls" lol, yeah, well, you dropped it. Good mod.
Yes I did drop it. I wouldn’t normally let it drop. But I wanted to demonstrate how hard it would fall. My Silverado gate actually fell like that and hurt my wife. Very easy mod and well worth the little $$$ spent. Thanks for watching
Make sure you put one on the other side. Mine broke after just a few months. Now with one on each side I haven't had any more issues.
It broke that fast? I thought about it and there cheap enough to install two.
@@DIYWilly Two will do the trick! 👍🏼
How did you add one to the other side with the hinge difference for tailgate removal?
I need that for my frontier. I’ll add that to my want to do list.
Thanks for watching!! Hope that to do list doesn’t get too long…😂
@@DIYWilly I have a 2014. Are these things one size fits all? I haven’t done any research yet.
Should be fine for your truck
You mentioned about the screw not being flushed with the bracket. I've worked in a machine shop and
In my opinion it was designed that way in order to give the screw head more surface area to hold down the bracket.
If the bracket hole was tapered deeper to be flush with the screw, the thickness of the metal will be thinner and leaving the screw head only a thin piece of metal to hold down and the bracket may pop out at any given time.
Thank you for the information.. Thanks for watching!!!
Nice man 👍🏼. Like it
Thank you and thanks for watching.
cool logo feelin it man its gonna blow up diy willy
Thanks man
Thanks man
Great video. Here in Brazil we can't find what we need. Here the accessories for this car are quite limited. I would like to make this perfect adaptation on my nissan frontier. Great video.
Thanks for watching
Thanks for the video. Just installed mine yesterday. Bought them off eBay and the only problem was the clip that stops the top cable end from popping off the pin. I had to wrap a piece of stainless steel wire around the clip to keep it from falling off. Overall it works great. Thanks again
Thanks for watching
i had the same issue with mine. The silver clip on the top of the strut kept wanting to come off when i shut the tailgate.
Just commented on my previous comment about that clip is poorly designed. I used two small zip ties to hold it. If it doesn't, I'll do it again with the stainless wire.
Hello, thanks for the tips and know how on installing thing and what to expect on the install. I bought it and watched the video a few times before I installed my tailgate and it was easy. Thanks
Your very welcome and thanks for watching.
5:37 hahaha, I had the exact same problem. I couldn't get the new bolt in for the life of me. I tried everything (including trying to get it in while lifting the tailgate up). On my final try, I got so frustrated that I pushed my whole body weight into getting the damn thing in, and it finally went in. Some brute force is sometimes needed to do the trick.
I hear ya! I always say “sometimes you just need a bigger hammer”! 😂
😁 I'm ordering one
This is a good mod for the truck. Titans came with a type of EZ down from the factory. It was a torsion rod pretty much but worked
You always gotta peep the goods before hand brother! Lol, man I wouldn't t think they'd be too mad about your mini bike....that sounded like a drag strip Willy!!
Hahaha 🤣
Yes it’s a Main Street but people drive way to fast all the time. We have fun guessing what cars they are sometimes.
@@DIYWilly lol now the "Dodgers rant" is 10x funnier!

Thanks for watching Ray!!
Great work, always enjoy your videos, clear and to the point along with useful tips on problem we will run into. Awesome work Bro 👊
I hear these kits don't last long and eventually fail? I imagine it's because all the weight of the tailgate is on one side. It should of came for both sides to be added, not one sided.
Time will tell ?
Yes agree the kit needs to be on both sides. We don’t open the tailgate much so should extend the life of the parts. I remember few years back there was a torsion bar spring for the same purpose for the Titan and full size trucks. Thanks for watching and leaving a positive comment.
@@DIYWilly No problem, Brother, you earned it 🤗
Installed it but i noticed i have to more force to close my tailgate. looks like the top cable comes into contact with the shock. other then that it was works pretty good. I used a flat tip screw driver to help install the bracket it was super easy to align the bolt hole.
Thanks for watching
Love this upgrade. Will be getting one of these. I was thinking the same thing, what would happen if you add another shock to the other side?
Using two has been suggested by others. Thanks for watching
I'm not sure about 2 of them but I can tell you from experience 1 is junk. It bends up and is useless. Hopefully 2 will work better. Good luck
@@charliedc2A So far I have had no issues with the one installed. Still works like new. Thanks for watching
@@DIYWilly Good deal, maybe my metal is thinner or something. I had to take mine off because it kept bending up.
Best 12 dollars i have spent!
Thanks for watching!!
🖒🖒
Great video -I can't seem to get the original tailgate hinge bolt off, was painted over - all the paint is off tried several tools afraid I'm going to strip it...any ideas?
Make sure you have the correct size tool. If you have a hair dryer try applying a little heat to the bolt. Just be careful not to use to much that it may burn the paint. Also I’ve had luck using a few light hammer taps to free bolts. Thanks for watching.
@@DIYWilly thanks tried heat gun and brand new 14 mm socket no dice, thing is on there good! Now it's a bit rounded so maybe have to drill it out...
Sorry to her that… Good luck removing the bolt. Do you have a welder? Try welding a nut to it. Before drilling as a last resort get some good quality vise grips and apply steady pressure on the bolt.
For the bolt on the side, did you use a breaker bar? Bolt on tailgate?
To remove it? Yes it can be tight. But not to put it back in. Be careful not to strip it. Thanks for watching.
Did you have an issue removing the tailgate bolt at 4 min 30 seconds off? I tried elbow grease, and then I tried a 14 mm socket and impact driver, but it’s not even budging. The paint is chipping off though.
Hello Brittany, Yes the bolt can be stubborn. You may need a breaker bar or a pipe extension on a ratchet to brake it loose. Be careful when using pipe extensions. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!!!
Hi can you put where you brouth that from I like that I have 2014 frontier thanks
Hello Steve, There is a link to the part in the description. Thanks for watching!
I’ve tried to install mine but I can’t get the bolt off the tailgate. I’ve tried an impact and that hasn’t budged it either. It’s not left handed threads is it?
Hello Marshall, it’s not left hand thread but just tight. May need to use a longer handle wrench with constant pressure to release it. If you have a breaker bar that would help. Good luck!! Thanks for watching!!
I used this product. It broke after a few months and they sent a replacement for free, not bad. The first strut failed when the bottom pivot point just sheared off, looked like rust. The replacement broke after 4 months of use. I think the design of the aluminum tab is hinky. I had to tie wrap it to the strut. It slipped out and caused the 2nd one to fail. I may try 2 struts after reading some of the comments below but maybe someone knows of a sturdier product?
The one I installed has worked perfectly. I agree after reading other comments that I will install 2 next time. Thanks for watching
Take my money
Ok
Thanks for watching!!
Thanks for the video! I just ordered one from Amazon. How is holding up so far?
It’s holding up perfectly. So far no issues. Just remember the tailgate hinge bolt will be difficult and be careful not to strip it. Thanks for watching..
@@DIYWilly Thank You!
Wonder if that will that work with a tailgate extender?
Not sure the tail gate extender would be heavy enough to operate properly.
Yes, it will work with a tailgate extender.
Would this kit fit the Frontier 2021? I am getting mixed results on Amazon, and eBay about this kit saying that it doesn't fits.
Hello I am also not sure. But the body style was the same till 22. Thanks for watching!!
Indeed, you are right the body style is the same as all previous ones. So, I guess I have to take a chance. 🤔
I can't wait until there is a mind control tailgate so we don't have to bend our elbow and squeeze the latch to open our tailgates! Bending elbows and squeezing is SO HARD! At what point did did people get so pussified that they can't lower their fucking tailgates? JFC!
Hello Dan, It’s more of a convenience like so many of the new truck come with. Thanks for watching!!
How’s the upgrade holding up over time ??
Is the Quality good ???
The gas struts have held up great. I will say the tail gate is not open that often.
So where is the link?
The link to the parts used is in the description.
I bought my first pickup in 77 at the age of 21 it was a Ford super cab 4x4, with the 460, and I've own a few others over the years, not once did I drop the tailgate I just lowered it by hand without any issues and still do with the frontier at 66 year's old, so can someone tell me what the flock has turned men into a bunch of candy asses that need a fockin tailgate lowering device
How you doing Jay? I hope I have the same energy you appear to have when I get to the prime age of 66. Hell yeah brother!! 👍 It’s seams that more trucks these days are bought for taking the family out and about than working on the ranch nowadays. People these days like the convenience of modern toys. This truck belongs to my son and he wants everything that is available to be installed…. Installed on it. Now let’s talk my Silverado. It’s not my daily driver, that duty is handled by my Suzuki Samurai. So there are times my wife will drive the Silverado on her daily routine. She has had the tailgate come down hard on that chest I love so much and it did leave a nasty bruise. So I guess there is a place for those modern conveniences. Thanks for watching Jay and have a great day. Stay safe!!
😂😂😂
What if the other side LIFTED it up 😏.
Yes great idea using a 12v actuator on the other side to lift it
@@DIYWilly If the other one only opens slow but closes freely than you could have a remote tailgate! The latch is the biggest challenge I would think 🤔.
Could easily be done like pop doors
@@DIYWilly I love getting the gears turning, I think about things all day long sometimes!

Normal people let it down with one hand. If you practice for a year or two l bet you could do it.
Hello Michael, are you saying it’s not normal? 😂 Your right I’m far from normal. Anyway yes I completely understand how gravity works but what fun is it to obey the laws of physics. I was trying to prove a point of how heavy they are and what could happen when not controlled. It a product install and review. Thanks for watching Michael and have a great day!!
I subscribed mines a 2018 frontier sv 4x4, king cab 6' bed.
Thank you Michael sounds like a nice truck you have there.. Take it a out and enjoy it..👍
Yeah but those damn dodge cars are fast!
Yes they are
Thanks for watching
How hard is it to just lower it down..🤡🌎🥴🥴🥴
Hello Big Red, It’s really not that hard. However my wife is small and drives both the trucks at times. This ez-down makes it much safer for at Costco..😂Thanks for watching!!!
