NEVER Ever 5W-30 on the Land Rover Discovery 4 LR4 Again!

  • Hey everyone! In this episode I want to tell you why I changed from my 5W-30 C2 engine oil to a 5W-40 C3 engine oil with a higher HTHS (High Temperature High Share) value and why you should change too!
    The answer is actually quite simple as well as logical and that is because I want my engine to stay alive for a long time. And in my opinion, it can only do that if it is maintained with the right products.
    I know that there are many opinions about oil for Land Rovers, but after changing the oil I can report that the engine runs smoother and smoother!
    According to the Land Rover manual, a 5W-30 C2 oil is actually sufficient. However, if you compare the viscosity of the two oils, you will notice that the 5W-40 C3 oil has a much more stable lubricating film at higher temperatures than the C2. And that's exactly why I've been using the 5W-40 C3 oil in our Discovery 4 lately.
    Even if the consumption is supposed to be higher due to the thicker or more viscous oil, this is out of all proportion to the costs of possible damage to the engine.
    What is the HTHS value?
    The HTHS value is a measure of the viscosity of an engine oil under demanding conditions. Specified limit values ensure that engine oils can maintain a tear-resistant lubricating film in the bearing area at high temperatures and high speeds (shear gradient), even in high-performance engines.

      @Stevottty Thanks 🙏🏻 I have already changed the filter and the oil for the gearbox myself before I had the channel. But last time I had it flushed to get the finest particles out of the back corners. If you use an aftermarket filter, you can do it without lifting the engine. These are the filters or sumps that come with a separate connection pipe.

    Hi Peter. Like many of us Discovery owners you’ve probably been following advice / guidance from Vera & Christian from LR Time. I’d really love to hear your experience of making the change over to 5W-40. What are the noticeable improvements etc. I’ve just bought 8litres of Castrol Magnatec C3 for my late 2016 D4 with DPF. I will make the changeover this weekend. Hopefully it will make the distinctive diesel v6 rattle less rattly !!! Greetings from London btw. Love your channel. Best wishes. Ty

      Hi Tyrone! Yes, of course I follow both of them 😉 And since we all want to keep our Land Rovers alive as long as possible, I think it's important to share as much experience as possible and also try unconventional things!
      As far as the oil is concerned, I can currently say the following: the engine was much smoother from the first start than with the 5W30. The rattling has completely disappeared. However, since about 2500km (2 months before the oil change) I have also been using a diesel additive which has completely eliminated the engine judder at low temperatures. But a video with my experiences will be posted on Sunday.
      Thank you, I really appreciate it!☺️
      Best regards from Graz and all the best, Peter

    Nice content. Thank you. Here is a shortcut to get a quick reading of your oil level without having to wait for ages: open your car's hood, go to oil level menu, click a few times cancel button on your steering wheel and voila. Normally it is recommended to put oil level up to the max, i.e. 6 liters of oil. These engines are pretty sensible to oil shortages.

    • @notthatkindofachannel
      @notthatkindofachannel  Рік тому +1

      Hi Egor! Thanks for the hint, another user already told me that. So with this it's much easier to check the oil level than having running the engine until it's warm, wait 10 minutes and then check the oil level. 😄 A few days later I also added the last litre until it shows me that it's fully filled to the max. Thanks for your tip an have good day, Peter

    Hi, my comrade! There are a few advices for you. You can instantly check oil level by opening the hood, then going into oil service menu on your gage cluster screen and then press cancel cruise button for one of two times, and the immediate oil level will be shown. My further advice wold be to fill in oil to the highest level, so the oil level scale would be full (it would take you 6 liters). It is important due to specific construction of oil reservoir (dont know the particular name in english) at the bottom of the engine.
    Btw, how is you engine doing on 5w40? Also thinking to switch as you did.
    Best regards!

      Hello, and thank you very much for your tips! I hadn't heard about the oil level before, but it works perfectly! :) I topped up about another 500ml 3 weeks ago and will now also add the last 500ml.
      As I said in my other video, the Discovery runs much smoother, both when warm and cold. What is noticeable, however, is that it needs a little more diesel. Not by much, but around 0.2 - 0.3 litres per 100 kilometres. But I'd rather invest the extra cost of diesel than that of a new engine.
      All the best and best regards, Peter

      Hello! It is also a SDV6 in the Discovery 4 / LR4. The 5W-40 has a higher viscosity than the 5w-30 and that is the reason why I use it. Mainly because this very engine needs high lubrication. The 5W-30 is better for cold environments because it is not as thick and therefore the engine starts easier in low and cold temperatures. Another disadvantage, if you like, is the possibly resulting higher fuel consumption. However, this is not the case for me. As already mentioned, I can only speak from experience and do not want to urge anyone to use 5W-40 instead of 5W-30. Best regards!

    Those Lion engines require 5w40 with zinc additives, they been developed by PSA and short while the pollution restrictions Euro 5,6 showed up, in order to comply with this regulations, the manufacturer (Ford) change the original spec recomended by the french designer and switched to low ash content 5w30. From the original project to the final product, JLR changed about four supplier's and the initial requirements has been lost or forgotten.

    Hi Peter, thans for the clear instructions, I will be upgrading to 5W-40 very soon. One question though, with everyone that is upgrading to 5W-40 I see Castrol Magnatec, is there a specific reason everyone sticks to this brand? For example today I saw the Shell Helix 5W-40 in the shop as well. Do you have any idea? Maybe ACEA rating... Thanks :)

    • @notthatkindofachannel
      @notthatkindofachannel  Рік тому +1

      Hi, I think it's because Land Rover itself uses and recommends anything from Castrol. Otherwise, if Shell oil has the same specifications, I don't see any reason to use Castrol. I used to use Fuchs oil, which is used by many car manufacturers as an initial filling, and I was always satisfied. But when it comes to oil and Land Rover, there are an infinite number of de facto opinions 😄
      I can only speak from personal experience and the difference between 5W-30 and 40 is noticeable.
      All the best, Peter

    • @notthatkindofachannel
      @notthatkindofachannel  9 місяців тому

      Hey @ThePaparaya! The Liqui Moly is certainly not a bad oil, but the thickness of the oil is still a 5w-30. And since you live in Tunisia and your temperatures are much higher than here in Central Europe, I would personally go for a 5w-40. The 5w-40 C3 has the advantage that the lubricating film does not break off at high temperatures, as can happen with a 5w-30. Many greetings, Peter

  • @e.v.d5595
    @e.v.d5595 Місяць тому

    So... a bit of oil knowledge about oil. 5W30... this means that the oil is "5" in viscosety at cold temp. The "30" is when the oil is warm/hot. 5 because you want to be able to pump the oil easily during start and it reaches all parts easy. But when the engine is hot you want to have a proper and strong oil film betreden those parts.
    The A/B or C tells us something about the SAPS and HTHS of the oil. To put it simply...SAPS are the "metall" parts in your exhaust gasses and HTHS is how "strong" the oil film is between parts suchs as a camshaft and hydraulic lash adjusters.
    So.. i drive a LaRo 3.0 v6 diesel. LandRover tells you to use a 5W30 C1 oil. The C1 has low SAPS but a poor HTHS. Poor SAPS for tthe DPF. But what about the engine???
    This is a more precious and expencife part to replace, or not.
    But i can not us a C3 which has a higher HTHS (or engine protection) because of the higher SAPS aswell.
    So i use the Fuchs Titan GT1 flex 34 C4!!!
    HIGH HTHS TO PROTECT THE ENGINE AND LOW SAPS FOR THE DPF!!
    BEST OF BOTH WORLDS.
    And Fuchs is a OEM oil for many many car factories. So that tells you something about the quality. 11:56

    Hi Peter,
    I have been considering using the 05w 40 C3 Oil. My car is one of the first D3's December 2004 so a little concerned with using the low ash C3 as mine is non DPF and should use A3 B4 which is difficult to obtain .
    I generally change my oil evey 3000k miles (4000km) which is 6 months interval as per JLR recommendations (6000 miles or 6 months whichever the sooner. I now have 140,000 miles on mine. I am now due an oil and filter change and debating which oil to use. I have managed to find the 05w 30 A3 B4 in the Castrol but very limited supply and £88 for 8ltrs.

      Hi Peter! I don't think the C3 is suitable for a D3 without DPF either, but I think it's good for the Discovery 4. It runs much smoother now after about 500km than before. Therefore, I think that the C3 does the Discovery 4 more good than harm.
      Haha yeah, when it comes to oil it always ends up in heated discussions. 😄 I think everyone should use the oil they want and think is good.

      Hello, Land Rover generally recommends 5W-30 for the engine. However, the lubricity at high temperatures is not as high as with a 5W-40. Unfortunately, a lot of damage to the engine occurs because the lubricating film then tears off. And that is exactly the reason why I personally use the 5W-40. The 5W-30 is certainly the better choice for cold countries such as Finland or Norway, as the cold-start properties are better due to the somewhat "thinner" oil and the temperatures in the far north are not as high as in Spain or Italy, for example. Best regards, Peter
