I don’t know how I did it but I taught my rescued Pit mix, Brandy, this command game and she absolutely LOVED it!! I’d tell her GO and she’d run with all her might, then when I’d say COME she’d come racing back, always with the kinda high energy “zoomies” as they call it. But she’d come and sit at my feet, even though she looked like she was jumping out of her skin on the inside, just waiting for that next command 😂 Over & over and she never got it wrong. I wish I would have capitalized on that, she was naturally so highly food and praise motivated, she really could have been trained to do absolutely anything. Such a great dog she was, she died of lymphoma in June 2021 and we miss her terribly.
Thanks! Not sure what you mean by "realistic version", but the puppy in this video is very real. I also have dozens of other puppies training on my channel.
Thanks for showing with a puppy too .. puts it so much in perspective as we can start early with the pup too and how easy or diff it will be .. my gsd is 2 months old and am going to try this ... Thanks Nate
Im working on getting my Level one Rally ribbon and Canine good Citizen your videos have been a huge motivator to the daily grind of actually getting off my a** and putting the dog to work. Thank you.
Awesome! I'm happy they are helping and I'm sure you'll do great with Rally and the CGC. Once you complete that, you should go for the AKC novice routine. :)
Hey Nate! I love your videos. You explain everything so clearly. I’d if you could make videos explaining the different type of AKC competitions. I’d love to see those!
Boy, if I could get my Pomeranian to send out like that, after only 2 or 3 long distance runs he'd have all his exercise for the day! 😁 Good job showing the steps to teach a dog. 👏
Enjoyed watching this video, I would not use my phone, he tore up my phone, if I left food on the phone, he would run off with both them, but I need to use a dog lease more, especially when I am sitting this up, he is going to really like this, thanks Nate for showing us great things to keep our 🐶 busy, for my Saffie to use the great things Bronte has in him!!!!!!!
Hi, quick question. Can this be used to start ANKC send away (to a prescribed area aka a marked out square on the ground)? If yes, how would you add in a stop and sit within the prescribed area?
Hi Nate, in what way does this differ from fetch and return? I tried this 'run' command with my dog in the garden and I felt confused about using the 'run' command when I felt like it was similar to 'fetch-it'. However, I haven't tried this in the field yet so perhaps the realisation will become apparent when I practice it on a bigger scale. Thanks for your help. I think your videos are superb! Your teaching has really helped me with my dog.
Awesome videos! I'm binge watching them during lockdown. My question is: if I work on something such as the send away and the dog breaks the command (like Arih did) how do you normally correct it if you are not immediately there? I get that if you are close enough, you use "No" and reposition, but what if you are say 10 meters away putting a treat down? With Arih you've let that slip this time but surely if that happened more frequently, the dog might make habit of it?
Hi Nate, I notice you're using the 'yes' command (your continuation marker?) when Percy gets the food on the bowl. Can you explain why? Slightly confused because the action is terminated, so I'd have thought the 'free' (your terminal marker?) would have been more appropriate? Or nothing at all since the primary reward is the food... BTW I am loving the videos. Used to have a dog, and about to get another after a few tough years. You're showing so many of the tricks, tips, and trainings that I need!
Thanks! Just think of what the word predicts. Continuation marker only predicts a reward, while the terminal marker predicts a release and reward. If our dogs are not in a commanded position and we use the continuation marker, it doesn't make it a stay command. Once the dog gets to the reward in the send out, the behavior is completed, unless you then give your dog a sit or down command. You don't have to mark, since they are getting the primary when the behavior is completed. However, some like to mark for this exercise, but it's not 100% necessary. Cheers!
I'm not sure how you transition between sending the dog to the food or ball, which does not require any direction since the dog knows where you placed the food so he doesn't even look at your hand, into actually following the direction of our hand so that dog runs into the direction that our hand points to.
Would you mind if I re-made this video in my own language? It won't be exactly the same obviously but I really enjoy your way of teaching and I haven't been able to teach my obedience classes because of Covid, So I could send these to them.
Absolutely! Feel free to use whatever you like. I didn't make any of this training up, so it's free game! Thanks for the comment/questions and if you can, send me the video when you're done. I would love to share it on facebook. :)
@@NateSchoemer Hey! I'm sorry for the super late answer haha. I ended up not making the video because the same week we were cleared for teaching our classes again! I might still make the video someday when I have time or god forbid we can't teach again because of covid. Thanks anyways!
Hi Nate I am your follower. I am working on my 4 y/o Doberman this command. When I make her sit waiting for my command "run" she is looking at me not the food or object I am aiming to and I can not find a way to make her look at the target. How to manage that? However she still runs to the food after my command.
First I would try starting closer again to the target. If that doesn't work you can have someone stand next to the target to make some noise until she looks in the direction of the target. The moment she looks in the right direction then send her. This should teach her that she needs to look at the target in order to go to it. :)
How can you send them out make them run and then tell them to stop I seen that in one German shepherd video I really want to teach my German shepherd how to do that we getting one very soon
This exercise, with a strong sit or down command. I usually don't ask my dog to sit or down when I'm training this though, since it can cause them to slow down. It's best to add the sit or down very sparingly, so they don't anticipate it when you do the send-out. If you watch a bunch of IGP (also known as IPO and Schutszhund ) competitions, you'll see what I mean.
Check out this video on my channel. It discusses puppies picking up everything they see. Lol! I'm not sure what brand the vest is, because the tag is worn off, but I bought it at a local dog training store called blue collar working dog. ua-cam.com/video/n4DKorjXyaQ/v-deo.html
I believe it's a fairly standard command for obedience competitions. More usefully, it's a hunting command (if you want your dog to chase animals out of a certain area), a herding command (go around the flock that way), and a good way to get in the day's exercise if you have something ridiculously energetic, like, say, a Belgian Malinois. I'm interested in it because I want to teach my dog to go away and stay away when I'm working with something that doesn't like dogs. Honeybees, for instance, are a lot more likely to sting when they smell a dog.
Thank you, I really appreciate that! To teach your dog to stay, follow the process in this video. ua-cam.com/video/s5iD8eN89bo/v-deo.html Happy training! :)
No one pretends to teach a puppy like you did from the beginning so I love what you can
Thanks! I appreciate it! :)

I like how patient you are with the dogs especially the puppy and not trying the strangle him with the leash. Great video. Thank you.

This is one of the exercises of mondioring. Amazing method, congratulations.

Very useful!! This is the best training video on UA-cam! Thank you 😊
Thanks Candice, I really appreciate that! :)
Very very informative to start off new with a dog or a puppy for someone looking out for this command. 👍
Thanks! :)

Thanks! Yes, I will probably do a series in the future on AKC competitive obedience training.
is it the Tom Rose School that makes Nate and Forrest Micke sound so much alike when they're talking in training?

My pleasure and thank you for the support! :)
Very good video, make more❤
Such a cool place dude
Thanks! :)
Puppy got it right off the bat. He is just slow at the run part.
Lol! Yup. :)
the send-out is a basic retrieving command, no surprise this pup picked it up fast :D
What a sweet mellow puppy! Sign him up for TDI! (Therapy Dogs International)
Yes, he's a good boy! :)
great video
Thanks, Tom!
Hi, quick question. Can this be used to start ANKC send away (to a prescribed area aka a marked out square on the ground)? If yes, how would you add in a stop and sit within the prescribed area?
Can you do a video on how to down in a full speed sent out?!

I feel like this is a command you might have more success teaching to an adult dog that has already mastered a good heel and recall.
I've had great success teaching this to puppies and adult dogs. :)

I would us the conditioned correction and reinforce the commanded position. You can see it in this video: ua-cam.com/video/s5iD8eN89bo/v-deo.html

But, how can you get the dog to run out if there is no toy or ball out forward. Mine will always wait for the toy to be present. Thanks.
@NateSchoemer you said "yes" and let the dog run to you to get the treat. mistake?

What a lousy view, and what’s the deal Nate, you couldn’t spring for the big deck? And how about finding a cuter puppy next time. Said nobody ever!
Haha! 🤣
The dog should come front of you when he comback with the toy why u didn’t show that
That would be based on preference. :)
