    It amazes me that content like this is free, please if you ever see this comment, please never change how you do your videos, with all the editing other you tubers do, it is hard to see the progression and know if you’re doing it correctly, amazing stuff

    That’s really interesting as the previous process for teaching the sit and down was the verbal before the cue

      Yes. Look at it this way. Whatever comes first, is what you are teaching your dog. Whatever comes after is supporting what comes first. :)

      Yes, this is the error that I made, overshadowing the verbal cue on the down. I had to retrain myself, before training my dog. 😉

    Hi Nate! I love your channel and videos! Are your hand signals unique to you or is there a universal hand signal language? You and Arih are a joy to watch! We have a four month Goldendoodle and he is already learning so many commands from you, like waiting at the door, center, heel, climb and spin 😍! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!

      @@NateSchoemer Thanks Nate. I have a Dutch Shepherd I am training in UKC Utility and for a Mondioring 2. We are struggling with the directed retrieve for the gloves specifically in UKC where you have to send them out and sit them in the middle and then direct them to a glove.

    I taught my dog American Sign Language. It's better than being verbal with my dog. In fact he really prefers sign language to verbal commands.

    Nate, I would like to Be able to do hand signals at a distance. How do Recommend Getting the dog's attention at distance when speaking is not an option, so hand signals can be given?

    So, i would be right to assume that if I train the pup with the command, but I also use the hand signs, could that make a "two birds with one stone kinda thing? Or is better to teach the dog the commands first and then incorporate the signs.

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  2 роки тому

      Think about the command as a question to your dog and the physical cue as the answer for your dog. The question always comes before the answer. So it could be taught in two ways.
      Hand signal (questions) followed by the physical cue (answer).
      If the dogs knows the verbal command, then that can be the answer:
      Hand signal (questions) followed by the verbal command (answer).
      In both situations the dog will learn the hand signal. It may work to do them both together, but I haven't tried it before. Almost like you're giving two questions, then one answer. Such as:
      Assuming the dog doesn't know the verbal command yet.
      Hand signal (questions) followed by command (second questions) followed by the physical cue (answer). It sounds like a reasonable hypothesis. Give it a shot and let me know how it goes. Lol!
      That was fun, thanks for the question.
      Cheers!

    Nate..my girl got it..she's going really good ..but.. has started to do a bad thing..jump up on people..its very upsetting..only when she first meets them..she's a big Husky 9 months old..then she comes back to me and sits..she does everything else..I have a shock collar coming ..to stop this behaviour..I cant seem to stop her she's off like a shot..jump and lick and knock off balance.😭Jenn

      ecollar is vibration not shock. You could practice greeting people on leash to improve this but of course you have to recruit a lot of unknown helpers. I trained my gs mix on a local college campus where there are MANY who want to greet my dogs.

    Please clarify: sit command appears to have 2 hand signals? 1. Palm up and up movement, 2. Fore arm and hand pivot outward.

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  4 роки тому

      It depends on if you're talking about the hand command or the physical cue that gets the dog to do the behavior. If it's the later, then it's any physical cue that can get the dog to perform the behavior. Most people will use luring with food or leash pressure. :)

    Gonna work on this when my dog is feeling better. Nate, what hand signal do you use for "stand" or rather what is the IPO/IGP standard hand signal if there is one?

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  4 роки тому +1

      They do a stand in AKC utility routine. You can see it in this video: ua-cam.com/video/E8vCz7gKTvY/v-deo.html

      Nate, thanks for this link. This video shows really clear hand signals for left and right finish, also. I was very timid about using large movements for signals (though at a distance you must). I see here that it still looks good in the ring, and its clearer for the dog. For my swing finish, I can get her to do it with just a flick of the wrist, but she has more trouble with the right finish (oddly).

    Hi Nate. Are these signals adhering to some convention? IPO/Mondio/KNPV/AKC Utility? Can they be performed with either hand? Are there any other ones (heel)? Thanks

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  4 роки тому +1

      I learned them for AKC obedience, but you should always double check the rules if you are going to compete in a specific dog sport. :)

      @@NateSchoemer What are AKC rules about verbal vs signals? I thought there was something about competitive obedience where you dont speak to your dog or something.

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  4 роки тому +2

      I was demonstrating AKC obedience hand signals. If you are training for fun you can use any signal that you like. :)

    • @Mike3745
      @Mike3745 3 роки тому

      It does not matter. I have trained a white shepherd to lay down with a flat hand, horizontal with the palm towards the ground. Once at a 50 meter (54,6 yards) I needed to use my whole arm to make him see or understand. Never trained the arm movement though.

    • @sophiesmith5922

      yup. its a chore. But if you gradually increase distance, especially using a platform or caranda bed, its easier to keep focus. My gs had the attention span of a flea, so practice does eventually work.
