I have a Red emerald variety at home and I had it for like 10 years... but just found out its name. Now I know this gorgeous plant is a philodendron and I love it even more!!
I can chill about not owning a particular plant I really want. I don't think it's often possible to collect every one in a set. Alternatives are fine. Cebu Blue not in Australia? Get a regular green epipremnum pinnatum. Aglaonema tri-colour too pricey? Get a Homalomena Wallsii. Ctenanthe Luberssiana too big for your space? Plenty of other yellow/green plants. Certain dieffenbachias look like aglaonema superwhite. . As long as you are loving the look of the leaves, all is right with the world. I went to the kitchen for some water and had to pause the vid even though I would've been able to hear it. That's because I love watching your expressions as you interact with your plants. Some gorgeous big philo fellows you have there.
Yes! Some of my philodendrons do this too. I just posted a video of the ants feeding on my plant’s extrafloral nectaries yesterday. Mine are in a greenhouse so I don’t mind them attracting ants.
Ants are not harmless. There is also a symbiotic relationship with ants and mealy bugs/aphids! Ants should not be "allowed" because they bring in and spread mealy bugs/aphids to ALL your plants. This side relationship can be very hard to fix once they get established.
Sure, keep an eye out for scale etc. if you see ants. I’ve had ants farming scale elsewhere and stopped it but I’ve never seen them do so on a plant that has extrafloral nectaries. Not saying it’s impossible, but I wouldn’t assume that any ant activity will result in them spreading scale or mealybugs to every plant you have. If you keep an eye on your plants you should be able to stop an infestation before it’s established anyway. Certain plants are prone to certain species of scale and mealybug, so if someone notices a plant is prone to pests they should probably keep ants away from it if possible. But I’d personally rather deal with ants and scale than a spider mite outbreak because I sprayed insecticide for ants and accidentally killed off all the predators that prevent pests too. (Especially in a country where effective systemic miticides aren’t available to non-commercial growers). What I’m actually getting at is: while it’s useful to share your experience so people can take on what’s relevant to them, too often people talk about plant care in absolutes when there are too many variables to generalise like that. People try things and learn what works and doesn’t in their own conditions to become better growers. So yeah, ‘watch out for ants farming scale’ is good advice. But the idea that ants should never be allowed under any circumstances is too absolute to apply to everyone in Nick’s broad audience, imho.
@@myphotosyntheticfriends3434 I think you are generalizing with what you said. I have had a "let them go" attitude with ants before, and paid dearly for that. Those ants spread the pests to every plant I owned, so yes, some plants are more prone to certain pests, but ants plant those pests on everything (except the nectar plants they protect) and they will take hold. Everyone has the right to say their opinions and tell their experiences to help others. What others do with it is up to them. No one should keep quiet because someone in an "audience" might actually save themselves a lot of heartache by following their advice. I didn't mention scale in what I said. I have never had scale, so I can't comment on it. Nick is talking house plants, so why would you bring up eliminating predators? I had to spray coleus this year for mealies outdoors, which I have never had to do in the past 20 years, so you are saying it would have been better to let them die waiting on the predators to show up and had all my work with them ruined? How do predators help if the ants are protecting the pest bugs? They can't get at them. Also remember there ARE very nice organics that do work in an outdoor setting. Before anyone mentions it: I am aware of predator bugs for sale. They are stupid expensive, and the idea of letting predatory mites, etc. into a home, to me, is ridiculous. You cannot use any products on your plants once released, because it will kill them as well. Also those with any kindness in them would realize that the predator bugs will eventually eliminate your pests, but then they get to starve to death. Nice payback. (If they all die before pest eggs hatch, you have your problem all over again.) I have had ants outdoors milking Peony nectar, but that didn't stop them from expanding their survival horizons to spreading the pest bugs they also "milk." They WILL, just not onto the nectar plant. Spider mites are also easy to eliminate as long as you catch it early and be consistent in treatment. Organics work on them too. I have never had them be the "nightmare" they are portrayed to be by others, but I never let them get out of control, either. (By the time you see webbing, they ARE an infestation/ARE out of control.) I stand by my advice. If others want to risk their plants, go ahead and allow ants around them. My EXPERIENCE is that you should NOT consider them harmless, whether indoors, outdoors near your house, or in a greenhouse setting.
Hi Nick! Those are some really pretty Philodendrons! I've never heard of any of them. My favorite is the Philodendron "White Princess". It has just enough pink to make me happy. LOL! I love the expressions you have when talking about your plants and the happiness they bring you. Thank you so much for sharing your time with us again!
Hey Nick, perfect timing for this video as today's my birthday and I'm getting a plant shopping tour to the Netherlands as a birthday gift :D now I have more plants to look out for there! Thanks for the inspiration, have a great day! ;-)
Happy birthday! You'll have a blast in your plant tour around the Netherlands! If you need any additional address, feel free to hit me up, although I guess you might have already a full tour planned 😉
Hi Nick. I have a very uncommon philodendron that I rarely hear anyone talk abt. I have a philodendron camposportoanum. Have you heard of it? It’s interesting because it changed leaf shape, color and texture drastically as it matures. It starts off looking very similar to a micans in its premature stage. It’s also very fast growing. I struggled to find any good videos on this plant. It’s lovely. I’m not sure why it isn’t more popular.
i got my atabapoense when i was visiting philly and went to illexotics and i love it!! franco called it the poor man’s spiritus sancti lol. also your tripartitum is gorgeous 😍
One of my personal favourites is the philodendron tortum, or the skeleton key philodendron! There's nothing like it, and it has a slightly fern-esque vibe.
hey nick! always enjoy your videos. that ‘happy sap’ from your philo can encourage fungus to set in and even attract bugs, so it is best to clean it off with a water/alcohol dampened cotton swab. thanks for sharing more from your wonderful collection.
Hi Nick, love your channel, you’re definitely one of my favourite UA-cam-ers !👍 Just bought a philodendron imperial red, which is, I believe, a non vining type, any care tips, please and do you know how big do they get? Thank you!!
If you have them a long time, they can get massive, a real statement. As they have a thicker stem, they can grow upwards on their own for a while, but will still need a stake at some point. Sort of like a pink princess' growth, if you are familiar with it
Thank you!! I’ve been growing an imperial red for a while and they get to be rather larger and will flop over as they get too large if they are not supported. I’m very hands off on the watering and keep it near a window
My favorite is philodendron Bernardopazii. It grows super fast outside in Florida or indoors. I have 2 pots in a east window and 1 pot on an east facing balcony. Mine likes morning sun. I like your videos.
Thank goodness!! I have noticed sap on 2 of my philodendron and thought that they had a pest. I treated them even though I didn't find any. I have been scouring Google and everything says a post was the culprit. I am happy to hear that some philodendron have this. I am a crazy plant lady but thankfully feel less crazy now! Thank you so much!! Keep up the amazing content Nick! Thank you!!
The white princess is really popular here in Australia! And not that expensive either. I find it has some of brightest white variegation on any plant, and is actually a nice visual alternative to the variegated monstera! It's really stunning
Why does Nick gotta be so cute?! That white princess is really pretty! Kinda digging the white and green plants with a hint of pink. have alot of Anthuriums and chinese evergreens like that. Also, saw pictures and videos of the philodendron skeleton key. So neat looking.
I’ve watched all your videos, very informative ang you explains clearly. If i need ideas about my plants I always search on your channel and 👍its a 100% got it! Keep on sharing
Nice collection of philos! I have a philo similar to your tri leaf , mine called philo sp.Costa rica. I like it a lot and it's been growing non stop since i got it. I also have white princess and love it. I was hoping it gets biggrr since the nursery i bought it offered bigger ones too, but of course more expensive. I have also bought golden xanadu recently that i love it. Thanks for sharing and happy growing. 😊
I literally just bought a 7" pot of philedendrom tripartinum on etsy for 86$ locally here in the states and then I stumble upon this video lol. Funny you showed a philedendrom that looks allot like the Spiritis sancti. I was just reading there are only 6 left in the wild and they're heavily guarded in Brazil.
I have two floridas, I don't water often, they are very close to a grow light and doing just fine, they are with my aglaeonemas and they enjoy residual mist they receive from me misting the aglaeonemas. Both have had a ton of growth. Unpopular opinion here: I think the birkin is super lackluster and I don't understand the hype at all. It just looks like canna lily leaves to me that are a dime a dozen and even cannas have more interesting colors/patterns than birkins and cost a fraction of the cost.
I just bought a philodendron mexicanum for 120$ for 2 nice size plants in a pot so exited because I’ve been getting into more uncommon plants and loved the leaf shapes and vining nature so exited to pick it up :?
I’ve been looking for a white princess for a few months now. All I can find is international sellers. Do you know anyone who carries them within the United States?

Hi! Can you tell how fast or slow the philodendron pink princess grow? I have a small cutting with 3 leaves and I am wondering how long I should wait for a new growth :D
I love Philodendron, but don't have any of the varieties that you shared, I have the Brazil, the Lemon Lime Philodendron, Xanadu and the Bipennifolium. I really want the Philodendron Mican's and Pink Princess. Thanks so much Nick for sharing, great video and I enjoyed seeing a few more of the Philodendron that are available, they really are a beautiful plant.
Seeing this is from a year ago and several were fairly new to you plants, would totally love an update video! ❤️🌱❤️

The nectar attracts ants that protect the plant, mostly the new leaves. I have a Philo Burle Marx that does the same and the ants really enjoy
Hugo Cassimiro OMG THANK YOU SOOO MUCH FOR COMMENTING THIS!!! I’ve noticed my new leaves ALWAYS have little ants on them and I never knew why

White princess is one if my favs!! It is such a beautiful little plant! I also, don't know why more people aren't getting excited about it!

I would recommend philodendron red Congo. It’s a very easy grower, and its leaves are very beautiful when they first come out they’re bright red.
I wish I would have known about the white princess before it got absurdly expensive too 😭
Yeah him saying it was a nice alternative had me look up some for sale.... I was like well clearly people have noticed them now 😲

What I really like about you is your candidness. You also don't pretend that your plants lookand that's what makes this chanel works
Hi, my favourite are the Philodendron Squamiferum . I have few at home.
I love squam!
Very nice philodendrons and so many varieties you hardly hear or never hear of.

I really don't have room for anything that's going to get big, But all those beautiful leaf shapes have just sucked me in! Love this video!
Thanks! There’s always another Philo out there 😅
philodendron atabapoense - now I’m obsessed!
Although I'm watching it in 2022, still enjoyed the video!
Great video, I love learning about all your plants.

Great picks! I think you’re so right about the white princess - in my opinion it’s much more stunning than the pink!

Me, too! That leaf shape!
I still need one! They are always too immature and I’m a little impatient with that one ... and low on space 😅
Philidendron bipennifolia is my favorite right now but its try to put out 3 leaves at once from the same place so we might have a mishap

Hi Nick!!! What Do You Think Of The Philodendron Guttiferum ??? I Purchased Them From ThePlantFarm On Etsy Because They Had Long Thick Green Leaves That Would Trail And Make A Good Hanging Plant. Are They Known By Some Other Name... Because I Hadn't Heard Of Them Before.

@@NickPileggiPlants thanks :-) I got another one (a little bigger) with variegated leaves so I hope at least one of them will survive and thrive :D
Saved the best for last 🥰

What about the large leaf types of Philodendron
I love Philodendron, but don't have any of the varieties that you shared, I have the Brazil, the Lemon Lime Philodendron, Xanadu and the Bipennifolium. I really want the Philodendron Mican's and Pink Princess. Thanks so much Nick for sharing, great video and I enjoyed seeing a few more of the Philodendron that are available, they really are a beautiful plant.
Thanks Holly! I can’t get enough Philo 🌿
i'm a bigger fan of the heart shaped philodendron than the spades ones, but even thou I'm from south America we don't have much variety available :(
Happy sap 😂 Orchids do it too
Ah, the pink princess 3 years ago. 😂
What kind is philodendron compact? Thanks
Urgh great, 5 more plants for my wishlist... lol
