It took me a while to figure out that sometimes I'd buy plants just because they were popular and I didn't have them yet. Now I only buy plants I actually like haha
I feel pretty confident in my growing of philodendrons & i agree with basically everything. I found the same things when it comes to making good mixes & dealing with pests. It seems like so many people online are scared of adding sphagnum to their plants.
Thanks for being so honest about how you’re feeling about some of your plants. I absolutely hate a few of mine, but I’m not throwing them out or handing the problem off to someone else! I’ve invested time and money into them, just like my children! I can’t give them away either!😂
This was the most thorough and clear explanation of all the different types of philos I’ve seen. Excellent job! Thanks for all your frank thoughts. Truly helpful!
Thanks Nick. It’s been 3 years since i started to follow you. Thanks for getting me into plants. I am at the point now that i only keep what i really like and those that do well for me. It’s a learning process. Common philodendrons and hoyas are my favorites. Never heard of hoya till I watched you👍🏼Take good care, friend!
_Thaumatophyllum_ ‘Hope’ or ‘Selloum’ is the one most people seem to want to have in their homes! But they’re huge. I live in California, & they’re massive no matter if they’re in or outdoors… in our yard, we have one that is 8’ tall x 15’ wide x 6’ deep against a wall! Multiple trunks and heads. We used to play in it as kids, and I’m 37 now. That means the thing is over 40 years old!! What’s cool though; the genus also includes the mini ‘Xanadu’, even though ppl call it “Philodendron Xanadu” it’s actually an endemic Brazilian dwarf form of ‘Hope’ - I forgot the actual taxonomic name, lol. ‘Xanadu’ is still a “tree” with a trunk, albeit mini, though it doesn’t really exceed 3-4 feet high. Each leaf that falls off exposes an “eye” or leaf node. I have seen it growing over ten feet across though. They’re like a tree-rambler. Probably my favorite.
Wow! Philodendron are my very favorites. They don’t tend to give me much trouble at all. I just bought a giganteum blizzard Saturday. I haven’t had many pests probably because they head for my Alocasia. 🤣
My Pink princess drives me up the wall. Other than that I agree with you 100% about the good tried and true ones. Funny thing too is that calathea some how thrive. So thats a plus haha
I love my 2 vareigated hooziwhatsits....because they both have beautiful flowers that have a delightful scent. Im talking about my var. sedum seiboldi.. and crassula morgana. Both are succulents. Since becoming an avid gardener, inside and out over 20 yrs, im much more careful about what plants I grow from seed or cuttings. I think you would literally pass out, if you saw the size and beauty of my red congo philo....its taking over my lounge but i just cant say goodbye to it. (8 yrs old) You make the world smile with you😊 Jo.
I have enjoyed your videos for two years now. Life got hectic and I had to step away from things I enjoyed. I’m back now and in a much better headspace. My plants and my garden were my sanctuary. It is lovely to see you still here and I look forward to catching up with what you’ve been doing. Thank you for posting affirming content. I hope you are happy and content with the direction of your life.
Hi, Nick. What a mouthful that was! But so true, and needed to be said! Never thought about growth patterns, I just got caught up the way a plant looked, etc. Gee, I thought I was the only one feeling that way. That being said, there are a few plants (more than a few) I would have never purchased if I had put more thought into it. Better late than never! Thank you, so much.😉 Hi, Muffin!
I got two philodendron cuttings last year which have taken off so well (Florida beauty and silver sword), and am so glad for suggestions to keep them thriving.
I really liked the advice about sticky plants. I have small children with already sticky hands & animals in my home. I don't think I'd really love having 2 wash them more than usual & the plant leaves every day. I do want large lush plants but I think I'll avoid the 'sticky' plants. Thank u 4 the great tips! 🤎LOVE UR CHANNEL❣
Philodendron Micans. I never had any issues with it. Not any visable pests. No over or underwatering issues. No propagation isues. No placement issues. It's my number one right now and I keep chopping it and make more of it until I don't know what to do with it.
My mother has a heart leaf Philo. And that plant is around 35 years old. That guy got to 15ft tall. I recall it never having a pest problem but it was such a large plant. If there was one. It would be hard to find it. My mother a few years ago pruned the plant and took of 14ft to get it able to move out with her. She regrets trimming it. But she donated all the starts to the church. It produced a countless number of them
You should make a mixture of garlic and water and let that sit overnight. Then filter out the garlic and with a cotton pad wipe your leaves of your plants. Let that sit for a few seconds and then wipe it off. It will repel insects and pests!
Great video. Such a good point about those less common versions being pest magnets. My common ones were fine but I had to get fancy 😂 Totally understand the advice that you wish you hadn’t invested in some of the ones you did, because now they have a place in your heart and you wish they didn’t 💚 I’ve had to start over too and I do find it frustrating that some grow in ways that aren’t attractive. People share pics from specific angles that look great but I like plants that look great at different angles.
I started with orchids, then added succulents and cacti, only after a few years did i start getting interested in popular tropical houseplants, because i had always heard they were divas and i have too much of that with the orchids. I recently fell in love with philodendrons and im trying to resist the urge to get many. This video gave me a lot of good reasons not to go crazy so thank you!! I have the pink princess and a berkin, i still really want a brasil and one of the funky leaved ones lol. Im easy to please, and I dont belive in spending too much on plants (its a hobby not my career lol and they can always die).
other than the heart leaf I have in my kitchen, the philodendrons in my collection are self-heading. I just love a big bushy house plant and the good windows in my home don't have great trellis space. As much as I admire them, I must resist the urge to maximize the jungle vibe 🌿
Hi Nick! What great info on philodendrons. I have a few of the more common ones and love them because they are so easy to grow. Loved the reference "variegated hoozeewhatzits" . ;-) Hi Muffin! Wish we could see more of her! Thank you so much for sharing!
I live in California and I used to put my a lot of my houseplants outside in the spring! But we only get sunny days about two days a week anymore if even that much! I’ve lost a lot of plants most are dependent on grow lights now…California= Seattle 😂
This is my first video of yours and as a new crazy plant lady who loves philos I found this soo helpful! I found 2 new (verrucosum and melanochrysum) philos today and I’ve had so much fun making the soil and repotting them into my planters! I do have a question though- fertilizing… I purchased dynagrow grow liquid plant food today and I’m trying to get all of the info that I can. Also, do you water right after repotting? I’ve heard to wait a day or two but I’ve just gotten into bottom watering so I watered right after I repotted. I feel so lost but it’s so fun to figure it out!😂 I’m going to binge some more of your videos now!
Yep, philodendrons are near and dear to my heart. Hard to go wrong with a good old fashioned aroid! Luckily I've never been much of a fan of variegated hoozeewhatzits. I consider them to be highly overrated.
I really appreciate your videos you’ve helped me a great deal. I’m wanting to try a moss pole with my golden pothos however this gets expensive could I use a orchid potting mix ?
Nick how do you keep Muffin away from your plants? My kitten has not discovered my philodendrons yet because they are still outside.. I put my bipennifolium in with my deliciosa..
Do you have a recommendation for moss poles? I’ve purchased some, but they seem hard and the plant doesn’t really attach. Have you tried making your own? Thank you 😊
I wonder if its the state you are in when it comes to pests I live in IL and have never had a issue with Phils. It's strange how from state to state everyone is differnt in their plant stuggles :) I saw this video and had to get a Goeldii Philodendron for my collection.
I agree with Nick. Maybe try the heart leaf philodendron. You can get it cheap and it’s usually easy to grow. I think the Micans is easy but might take a little more finesse….
Love the broadcast! But I have to be honest I do get attracted to the exotic philodendrons and that's because all the "cool kids" have them! I'm hoping to win a lottery one day so I can build a ginormous green house in the backyard so I can keep my philodendrons and other plants happy! 😊
Man, I don't even know what two of my philodendrons are! 😂 I literally bought two philodendrons because they were baby plants and super cute and colorful 😂 they were impulse buys, I went out to buy orchid bark and charcoal, okay? I guess I'm naming them Bark and Charcoal 😂
You shouldn’t film in-front of your bar. I was trying to figure out if you drink Manhatans. Looks like bitters up there. 😊. I just wasn’t giving you my full attention as you deserve
It took me a while to figure out that sometimes I'd buy plants just because they were popular and I didn't have them yet. Now I only buy plants I actually like haha
So real
Same!

I do love philodendron, a have some and my favorites are Silver sword and Micans, nothing fancy
Also, this video is very helpful! I’ve been soooooo into Hoyas and I’ve finally started to branch into philodendrons.. so thank you! ❤

I totally agree with you. Those tried and true always come thru in a clutch.
Lol! Hilariously honest and on point! Just found my new favorite plant UA-camr. Thanks for all the insights and tips Nick...looking forward to more
New to your channel--you are a very engaging plant person and I'm looking forward to more videos!

You're really loving on your plants. Those leaves are nice and shiny💚. Moss poles are becoming an eyesore for me.
Totally love your channel ! I cant believe how many people are into plants now. Its kinda awesome 😂
Watched so many tube ti remind me about my Philo
Thnx Nick
Happy plant mom day ❤
Excellent video! And I love your honest approach. I've only recently been able to "not" get a philodendron just because I don't have it.

Love this info and appreciate your honesty!
Love all of your tips. Thank you so much.

Lol “a lil 4” pot of variegated whoosy whats-it” lol 😂❤
Thank you for the nice chat😊
A Philodendron that is literally pest free for me is the atabapoense. No mealy bugs, spider mites nor thrips 😊

Exactly
I really appreciate your videos you’ve helped me a great deal. I’m wanting to try a moss pole with my golden pothos however this gets expensive could I use a orchid potting mix ?
EXCELLENT information!
New to your channel. Your videos are so helpful. Thanks.
I like to mix mosquito bits in the soil to help prevent fungus gnats, i own a tree philodendron and a self heading philodendron
do you play that harp???
Nick how do you keep Muffin away from your plants? My kitten has not discovered my philodendrons yet because they are still outside.. I put my bipennifolium in with my deliciosa..
You use systemic in the soil? I was scared to try it because I have a cat. Any advice for this?
Do you have a recommendation for moss poles? I’ve purchased some, but they seem hard and the plant doesn’t really attach. Have you tried making your own? Thank you 😊
I have mine on a coco stuck but i didnt know the roots are supposed to grow within it soaybe i should put more ties on it so that it can attach?
I wonder if its the state you are in when it comes to pests I live in IL and have never had a issue with Phils. It's strange how from state to state everyone is differnt in their plant stuggles :) I saw this video and had to get a Goeldii Philodendron for my collection.
wonderful video
I agree with Nick. Maybe try the heart leaf philodendron. You can get it cheap and it’s usually easy to grow. I think the Micans is easy but might take a little more finesse….
Where do you buy a piece of wood for them to trail on? I don’t want to bring something in with bugs.
thanks Nick🥰
Where can I get the hoozie whatzit ? 😆
My favorite also , that for the helpful tips
Will putting dogwood sticks/branches in for my philodendron to climb okay🤔
Ugh....I agree.....I live in Florida...but, I still have some whooziwatzits that I regret buying 😊....✌️💜💋
Love the broadcast! But I have to be honest I do get attracted to the exotic philodendrons and that's because all the "cool kids" have them! I'm hoping to win a lottery one day so I can build a ginormous green house in the backyard so I can keep my philodendrons and other plants happy! 😊

A Philedendron "who'sy-whatsy" 😊
Good morning Nick, you're right it's not all glory.
My plants are dying 😭 on me .
I must have given too much love.😅
Or too much water. I’ve killed quite a few philos from overwatering. I try to play it safe and let them stay slightly on the dry side.
@gwenncoath8941 thank you. I'll try to go easy with water on plants 🪴.
Thanks Nick 😊
Great advice.
What is the sticky stuff that’s on the philodendron leaves 🫣
Is it harmful to my plants 🪴
I sprayed them, but eventually the stickiness comes back 🤔
Can you tell me how to deal with a tree philodendron that is out of control. Can I cut it up and reroot it?
Thank you.
Mine is in the pot. Don't know which one it is.
Is that a harp in the background?
hoozie whatsit...lmaooo
What is your favorite Philodendron? (I love the Dark Lord)
Isn't that Goldii a Thaumatophyllum now? Haha just teasing.
My burle Marx and painted lady are rhe worst culprits of the sticky sap 😮
Thank you Nick for a delightful video full of great information truly inspirational! Can't wait for the next video! 🪴😎🪴
A drinking game with a friend video would be loved! Please! 🥲🙃❤️
