Photoshop is a great place for designing content to animate in After Effects - but knowing how to prep your files and think like an animator is crucial for success! Properly structuring your file and knowing which features transfer smoothly into After Effects will help you spend less time struggling with importing, and more time making those awesome animations!
In this tutorial, SOM's Senior Motion Designer Kyle Hamrick walks you through prepping an existing Photoshop file, then covers several techniques you're likely to encounter, like Artboards, Layer Styles, Adjustment Layers, Gradient Maps, preserving Editable Text, and more.

KYLE!! how ARE you man. This is surreal. THE absolute first time I've experienced a random search on a topic and ended up knowing the presenter personally. Wow.
That Gradient Map to LUT blew my mind! Thank you so much!
I'm only 3 minutes in and this has helped tremendously with what I'm working on! Thank you School of Motion!
Thank you. It answered ALL my questions in one go instead of looking for different videos to solve different problems. Really appreciate it!

very helpful. Can SOM covers how to use Timelord properly? like how to export PSD files so that its PSD in Ae files not turn into PNG files. Timelord does that and I want to keep as PSD files not PNG or have control over what to export as.
import PS layers with blending modes in AE while allowing 3D layers ? (incompatible with continuous rasterize, which is needed for blending modes to work).. ? 😛 possible ?
I noticed that smar objects when imported doesnt come as a pre comp, but as a non editable raster layer... so if i want to make it openable i need to import each smart object contents in a separate psd?
That's exactly right. Smart Objects are great when you're working in PS, but if you want access to anything inside them, I typically avoid 'em when prepping designs for AE.
and I just discover we can't import layer style from photoshop layers 's groups to after effect.... :( Don't you have any suggestion ?
I just put a layer on a group and activate drop shadow layer style on the group. Import it into after and..no way layer style ... :(
Thank you
