As a Canadian I'd like to set the record straight. Moose are our ground military forces. Beavers are our navy. And Canadian geese are our air force. While they are all friend shaped, they are in fact, not friends! Hope you're all doing well and staying warm in this insane weather we're having in North America! Lots of love!
I'm going to have to add, that we do have a marine division of moose as well. Those guys can hit 6mph swimming, can swim in -50C water AND they DIVE?! and can hold their breath for like 30 seconds to a minute.
It would be amazing to have a 2023 recap. Like x number of visitors to the zoo, x number of surrenders, x number of adoptions, x number of snake discovery produced babies (you could even break them into snakes, lizards, amphibians, inverts), x number of different species that had babies, x number of videos brought out, x number of shows visited, x number of new reptiles to the SD family etc. I think that would be a really cool thing to see all you've achieved this year. You could also honour some of the lost like Jupiter and omnomlette.
I really wish they would do this. Especially honoring the lost... I know they don't like to bring us down in the dumps with bad news, but it sucks when the news is given randomly and not many people get the news. Like, some people in streams still ask about Candy Cane.
Sorry they weren't viable but how exciting. Further proof you've created natural environments for your reptiles. Your care, enthusiasm, love, and joy for these animals are why I support.
I hope, they made sure she had somewhere to lay the eggs where its a bit higher than the ground and with soil ranging from 82-86 degrees. In the wild they lay eggs in tree hollows and from what I learned they like laying eggs around that temperature. I have a feeling the reason they molded is not due to them being infertile. Monitor lay eggs very early in development so not seeing veins for 2 or even 3 weeks is normal but from just about every breeder I listened to they say that if the female scatters her eggs they are very likely to go bad. Typically they scatter eggs because they had trouble finding somewhere they wanted to lay and held onto them longer than they shouldve. They end up laying them and scattering them in desperation hoping the eggs hatch anyways and to clear up for the next cycle.
I've said this in a few videos but it would be great to have a video with a bunch of animals going about their lives while Ed provides their voices. I would love that! Ed providing their dialogue is so stinking cute
I still have a scar from my snake. Lovingly given to me at 11 years old after scaring the.poor guy when he escaped and I was trying to get him back in his enclosure. No pain, no gain 😅.
If you got reptiles you get bitten. If you got a cat you get scratched and if you got a horse your feet get stomped. Animals are truly amazing and totaly worth it.
That cracks me up. A facility when I was in college has Diamondback Terrapins and they laid eggs. They got in trouble for breeding an endangered species without a permit. We were like, "Ok, we'll tell the turtles to knock it off." LOL
As a Canadian I can confirm we ride moose to work/school/etc... We also have yearly sacrifices to the Canadian Geese to keep them appeased so they keep their sass in check. It's an important tradition.
Thank you so much for bringing us on this journey, even though the eggs didn’t turn out! I’m still just in love with /stunned by how many of your species are comfortable enough with their enclosures etc to shoot their shot at reproducing! Especially since this is an endangered/difficult to breed species. The fact that they’re even locking and the female is producing eggs is clearing some *major* hurdles and something to celebrate. I really appreciate that you showcase these milestones that don’t ultimately work out, because shows the realism. Not every clutch just magically goes from, “I have two snakes” to “immediate babies”. It takes a lot steps, a lot of people, a lot of learning and a lot of luck to figure out what works. I’m glad you shared your experience and added to the information pool on how to support, care for, and ideally breed these lizards.
as a canadian, i am honoured to have the blue tree monitor theme be canadian even though they didn't make it p.s. the moose are so friendly, especially during breeding season! the bears, specifically the brown ones, are even better though!

I appreciate the update at the very end! Is good to know the status, even when it's not the best news, so that we're all on the same page with regards to expectations. You guys do a good job of looking on the bright side even when things are disappointing - keeping it in perspective that first-time layers will often have an infertile clutch, but it's still good practice! LOL
Blue Tree Monitor Eggs?! That's SO exciting!! More captive bred blue's! They're sooo gorgeous! I don't like the feeling of spider webs either it freaks me out.
Reindeer and Caribou are the same animal. In North America wild individuals are caribou, and captive are called reindeer. I only learned this because a friend went to a reindeer farm and sent me pictures and I was like, "...why do those caribou have bridles?" I'm sad the eggs molded out, but I'm very glad you found out she can produce eggs!
reindeer come with subspecies, since the north american and european native groups have had a good chunk of time to diversify from each other on top of diversifying from how massive their range is
Swedish reindeer is famous for no trafic sense. They stand on the road and does not move away. Fun fact: Before reindeer started to pull santas sleigh it was pulled by goats. Also goats came with pressents before santa got the job.
Emily, your enthusiasm never ceases to make me smile. This is a species I really don't know nor have any particular feelings toward, and I was excited WITH you!
I'm sorry for the loss of your friend and fellow reptile community member. I hope you and ed are doing ok the best you can during this difficult time. ❤
Tree monitors dig deep underground (like 2 feet or more) to create nest and lay their eggs within. You guys should create a dig zone in the enclosure for their next season.

@@EC2019 Of course they are breeding for money but they still care about the animals and the eggs they breed. And that's not always the case with breeders. Two things can be true at the same time.

14:20 as a Canadien moose’s are very much NOT FRIENDLY keep your distance unless you want permanent or even worse TERMINAL injury’s and also moose’s are actually pretty rare to find they hide very well. Just remember if you see a moose get to a safe area:high places, cars houses, behind tree’s and sacrificing other creatures to live if ABSOLUTELY necessary.
Something that does need to be addressed, captive bred populations actually have very little conservation value. Captive bred animals a vast majority of the time cannot be reintroduced into the wild. The only thing I could see them helping with is more supply in the market could lower the price which in turn decreases the incentive to take them from the wild to be sold. The absolute best thing for endangered species is to insure a stable wild population by protecting their habitat and preventing poaching.
It’s nice to know she’s good at getting eggs out, even if they’re not fertilized. Here’s to hoping the next attempt is fertilized because how freaking cool would that be!
