Maybe this is the parts of my brain that are still in catholic school, but I'm shocked that, dispite bringing up the schisms and such, the general papal conclaves weren't mentioned as a point of comparison. They average out to like 30 days, i think the most recent one was like a week, but as recently as the 1830's was a multi year papal election (1830-31 with 83 votes), and the longest running papal conclave lasted about 4 years (1268-1271) and had around 178 ballots, and those institutions kept running, which to be fair, is because its the catholic church and only the bishops are voting, but still.

in 2010-2011, Belgium stayed 18 months without a government. They managed just fine nonetheless.

Glad we got to kings of Dorne and/or Night Fort-Rimegate war. I just don’t think records that specific would have been kept about the Night’s King and thinking someone as shady as Bloodraven would need two years after already stuffing the ballot with Raven’s Teeth is wild.

In northern ireland here we were without an executive in Stormount for 35% of the days since it was set up following the troubles due largely to the mandated 2 sectarian party system where govt roles are split between the 2 largest parties and then those two parties being unable to work together and dissolving the executive. 2 years would be a blessing around here.

I'm guessing the long election would most likely have happened at a time within written records, a few hundred years or so ago. Not so early as the Night King's election, since Aemond implies they know the number of votes/days it took. But early enough that all 18 castles were manned. And not during a crisis, but at a time when the choice was super controversial and the outcome potentially catastrophic. So the castle commanders would be sending delegates, not free to change the votes they represent, only able to send ravens back.
But it's probably just stubbornness and a first-past-the-post voting system.
Also, does anyone think it's weird they use different tokens for the different candidates and put them in the same pile? Like, why not have each candidate have a basket? Oh, maybe it's so castles can send riders with sealed containers of votes, and not have to trust maesters/raventenders/literate people? And they just have to pre-determine that the arrowheads are Edric Flint and the pennies are Ser Garth Rivers or whatever?

Or, bloodraven is the acting lord commander, or maybe first ranger (assuming he was) gets special crisis powers if there is no lord commander, he stalled almost 2 years for magical shennanigan reasons, and when he ventured beyond the wall the crisis resolved with only 2 viable options left (perhaps all the Ravens teeth voted as a block for one dude when blood raven had disappeared)
