Hey Karen! For the Paintbrush I generally hit the top string with my thumb and then brush the 3rd, 2nd and 1st with my finger. There's another similar strum I call the Old Time strum that has the same sort of mechanics ie hit on string with the thumb and then brush the strings below it with the finger. The difference with the Old Time strum is you use your thumb on the 3rd or 2nd string.
