    Man I couldn’t agree more! I loooove the EOS R. I traded in my 5d mk iv for it, which is technically a higher model in the Canon lineup. I couldn’t be happier with my decision. The EOS R is such an underrated camera. I use it almost exclusively now, even more than my 1dx mk ii. I still use the 120d when I want those buttery 120 FPS shots though 😉

      Lack IBIS is non-issue if you intend to use RF L which have IS - nobody seems to know that RF L lenses with IS have 5 stops of optical stabilisation. A month ago Jared of Ditch Auto, who is a a7iii shooter, did a review of the RF 28 - 70 F2 L (which has no IS) and said the digital IS of the EOS R was giving better results in handheld video than the IBIS of his Sony.

    • @wesleychapman9001
      @wesleychapman9001 5 років тому

      @@JackFN_VR64 I saw that as well actually, since posting my last comment. Here's the issue though, shooting photos without as IS lens... Yes, if you have the new RF lenses with IS then they are awesome. Or if shooting video the digital IS is surprisingly good, even beating out at A7iii with IBIS. But what I want to be able to do is mount a canon EF 24-70 onto a canon mirrorless body that has IBIS, and boom all the shots taken are stabilized. I don't want to have to pay $2,300 for the new RF 24-70 with IS, or heck how awesome would it be to have IBIS for that incredible 28-70 f/2? Canon is just so behind compared to the competition, and for a company as big as they are, they should of had this out sooner. Again though, you're certainly right - with an IS lens or if shooting video with electronic IS you'll be good to go.

    • @freddumartin7878
      @freddumartin7878 5 років тому +2

      Jack dN I work with both the A73 and the EOS R, IBIS in the Sony is totally useless for videos, just terrible, every Sony owner will tell you. IBIS is for stills anyway, digital IS has proven with the GoPro 7 and the Osmo action that it is the future. As you said, the combination of canon IS lenses and the digital IS works incredible on the EOS R, I certainly don’t want a bigger EOS with ibis, but just a next gen digital IS like GoPro and Dji. What Panasonic did on the GH5 and G85 was good only because it’s a tiny sensor. Their recent Full Frame camera’s ibis is just as lame as the A73.

    Nice video, one thing though: Bitrate is 90 Mbps in FullHD (24/25/30p) not 180 Mbps (180 Mbps is in 50p/60p only - twice the 90 Mbps) so campared to 60 Mbps on other cameras it's not 3x but only 1 1/2x (which is impressive anyways). And 480 Mbps in 4K vs. 100 Mbps is great too!

    I had a C100 Mark II camera, the images it produced was far better than Sony or Canon...the bitrate was so low in comparison. Sometimes higher bitrate doesn´t mean better video quality. The camera brands let them best codec to the high end models. Nice video!

    I enjoy your videos--appreciate your honest reviews that give pros and cons and your enthusiasm feels genuine not over-the-top fake. I went to a store and held both cameras and am torn between them--there's a traditional feel to the 6D that I find nice, but the R has technology that is intriguing, but more $$. Which would you suggest for a hobbyist strictly looking to get back into still photography mainly for fun? I am not going to use video at all but find that most of the reviews cover cameras from the video point of view. thank you.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  4 роки тому +1

      For photos, I really don’t think you can go wrong with either camera. It probably just comes down to budget and what’s easiest to afford. I mainly focus on video, but both cameras take great photos. The R has a slightly better sensor, better autofocus, and higher burst rate, but the 6D is no slouch. I have many large prints on the walls at home and work from the 6D II and they look stunning.
      Here’s my verdict:
      -If you can afford it, go for the R
      -If you need to save a little money to with the 6D
      Either way you’ll be happy. 👍

    The touch and drag is very cool but not totally unique. First time I believe it got used (without the drag focus in video) was the Panasonic G6. I find it one of the most intuitive ways of picking focus and makes the contrast based system in Panasonic cameras quite competitive. Since leaving micro four thirds I do wish Sony would properly introduce it.

    • @edshotsdotcodotuk
      @edshotsdotcodotuk 5 років тому

      @Stefanie Daniella yes touch AF has been around for a long long time but pretty certain the Panasonic G6 was the first where you could look through the EVF and still use the LCD to control the point of focus. Touchscreens sure do help usability such a shame a lot of the Sony's limit their function.

    Great video man just upgraded to the EOS R and I'm loving it so far. But that's not the reason for this comment lol i noticed you said that the LCD screen on the A7III was terrible and I have had the chance to use both cameras and I will say that the LCD on the Sony and the movement of it was PERFECT for me. I was shooting live music for a music artist on tour so that screen on the Sony really helped me out a lot while getting those low angle shots. Just my 2 cents. Great video again BTW very informative.

    I've had my R for a few weeks now.
    Interesting video but I have a couple of comments.
    1/ The ability to use EF lenses is hardly "underrated." Likely MOST people who buy this camera choose it for this very reason? It was "reason numero uno" for me!
    2/ Touch and drag is not working well for me. Maybe I'll "get the hang" of it with time but right now, I hate it! Just not working well for me at all. I've lived with "focus and recompose" so long, that it's second nature and I may never change to any other way of focusing.
    3/ So much of the criticism of this camera comes from vloggers and sports shooters. That's fine. I understand their needs are not well-met with The R. But, I am neither and the R suits me pretty well . . . and takes all my EF L lenses! When Canon introduces a mirrorless with IBIS, I may well be a customer!
    So, for me . . .
    4K Crop? Couldn't care less!
    Slow frame rate? Not so good but not a deal breaker.
    Lack of IBIS? A real bummer!
    I am still envious of the Sonys, but, if I am patient for just a while longer, I feel Canon WILL have a mirrorless with IBIS and a faster frame rate.

      Thanks for taking the time to share your points! I don’t know if you saw anything about Canon’s fiscal report that just came out, but it talked a lot about the mirror less market.
      They said the R and RP didn’t sell as well as they hoped, but they’re going to keep pushing them and they’re aware of what new cameras need to offer. So it should be interesting to see what they release next.

    I just love the R & gives superb quality shots. Build quality is excellent, handling is great, & battery life is superb, which is great for my travel photography -so far I have never had to use my spare battery. You're right ... But what if... "R" had a new sensor instead of one that was criticized already when 5DMark IV came ... And image stabilization in the camera ... and two memory cards ... This was expected things so all criticism was quite right.
    It feels like Canon thinks they shouldn't see what others are giving or doing.
    But hopefully they have learned from the massive criticism they received.
    And if they don't, they will gladly, for my part, shut down the camera manufacturing .... and I am currently using Canon.

    I adore my fully variable EOS R screen and wouldn't want anything different, but I understand the purpose of the Sony fold out screen from another UA-camr… A lot of people prefer these cameras for filmmaking, and while a flip out screen like the R is ideal for vlogging, when you are shooting a scene from behind the camera, the Sony design keeps the screen completely center with the camera you are holding. It creates a better hand-eye coordination and more stable camera hold while still allowing you to hold the camera low or high and still see the screen. It's all about having the right tool for the job. It's not for me, but I respect it's perfect for certain other types of camera users.

    • @tombuck

      This is probably the best perspective to have. The right tool for one person may not be for another. I’ve borrowed the A7III again for about a month specifically to try and get a better understanding of its strengths- not how it compares to anything else, but how it stands on its own. While I haven’t gotten used to the screen, I can definitely appreciate that it’s an awesome camera.

A spec of dust went into my sensor and It was very noticeable in my shot! Fortunately enough I was able to fix it with after effects content aware fill. but man I wish i had that sensor cover during my shoot!

    Love the touch and drag. But I think it would be awesome to have an option to let the camera acquire focus as soon as you lift of the finger from the screen after selecting the focus point. Another interesting option could be touch and drag on a smaller area, such as “thirds”, since its a smaller area, it would probably “roll” faster through focus points and also not get too close to your face while looking in the EVF. Finally, it would probably make the absolute position option of touch and drag more usable and maybe even faster than relative if you take the time to get used to it (like using a Wacom).
    Actually there is a lot that can be done in a touch display that size. I just wonder how much of my battery is draining out because of it.

    Unfortunately, 400 Mbps is not any better than Sony's 100, since both are only 8 bits bit depth. And that 400 is only the heavily cropped 4K. The Sony bitrate for HD video especially 120 is higher.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  4 роки тому

      While the 480Mbps bitrate is only available in 4K, the HD bitrate is 180. And there’s an option for 10 bit using an external recorder.

    • @miklosnemeth8566
      @miklosnemeth8566 4 роки тому +1

      @@tombuck Yes, you are totally right, my mistake. Still, as an owner of EOS R and A7III, I can agree with other reviewers that the high 480Mbps gives zero advantage for the 4K image quality, the Sony 6K-to-4K downsampled image is cleaner than the direct 1.8x 4K sensor crop of the EOS R. Another bummer with the EOS R is its no-autofocus 120fps, it supports only 720p with a nice-on-paper-only 160Mbps, while the A7III's 1080p120fps at only 100Mbps is a lot cleaner video image with full tracking AF. Canon has a long road to go to catch up the competitors in this arena, honestly. Even when you compare it to the 10-bit recording competitors like Sigma fp, Panasonic S1, S1H, Nikon Z6. All of these cameras use the same Sony 6K-to-4K downsampling sensor, the Panasonic and Sigma without the PDAF layer. Sony A7III has low bit rate and bit depth, but the others work with full gear. How EOS R can compete all of these beasts?

    • @tombuck

    Great Video, Enthusiasm Project! I am saving my "jing" for a Canon EOS R. I'm "sold" already! Your video just runs it even deeper for me. I love your details and examples. This was a helpful set of info for me, and I plan to view your overall review on the R as well. As the owner of a Canon 6D right now, I can't imagine the upgrades that are going to happen when I purchase this "beast." And I believe you're right. Bashers tend to be people stuck on a spec or two, rather than real users of the camera. My 6D has done wonders for me, and will still be a decent back-up camera when I get the R. But the level of choices, the IQ, the focal points, the lens options ~ are all amazing. Thanks again for your work, EP! Appreciate this! Scott S, Minnesota :)

    I 100% disagree on the vari-angle (and I own an EOS R). A lot of people on UA-cam want one because they vlog with their cameras. But for doing photography, the 2 axis (or the 3 way like Fuji) tilt is far better in my opinion - and a lot of professional photographers agree. The flip out is great for vlogging, but it's a lot of wasted motion to untwist the thing to do a quick framing for a live view shot. Also it's a huge PITA if you go from EVF to screen back and forth for shooting. Finally, it's out to the side instead of in line with your subject.

    • @tombuck

      Personal use is always important to consider. I don’t vlog, but I would never buy a camera without a flip out screen, so it’s important that everyone knows their specific needs.

    You’re right on point, very nice review! I went the same you as you did with a A73 in 2018 and the EOS R early this year. After using them both intensively for my corporate video work, the codec difference became obvious and then just after I bought my Ninja V... well... I replaced the A73 with an X-T3 😝 I think the Sony is much better for photography than the Canon though, a lot faster and more compact, very good AF for stills. I hope if the A7S3 ever comes, they will put a hdmi 10 bit 422. I’ll be fine just with that over the actual specs of the A73. For the 4k60 FF Sony just sent the message -> buy a $10k FX9, just like Canon -> buy a $15k C500ii (damn I wish I could...).

      @The Enthusiasm Project, nice objective review on the eos r. I missed out on the entire 2018 bashing and so far, I only see good reviews of this cam of late. I think that goes for all cam mfg, as they seem to hurry to sell new bodies to please the hungry consumers for newness, and then spend a year or so doing updates. I guess the fear of opportunity cost leads them to chose this problem.
      I agree with Fred that on A73 performs well in stills, especially when paired with their wide range of lens offerings.
      Would be nice if you could compare the two for stills only as with video, Sony can’t and seems it doesn’t want to compete in this space, at least in the present moment.
      For video, if you have the budget, take a look at the Pana S1H. I just bought it and it’s a beast for videos.
      Or alternatively, if you haven’t looked at the GH5 for lighter and small setup, it also has the high bitrates like Canon so you don’t lose data but it doesn’t have the bit depth as Canon’s 14bit and color. But it compensates with dual ibis if you shoot handheld. It’s not as good in lowlight, but there’s workaround if you use metabones sb + sigma 18-35/1.8. Unlimited recording when I use it for documentary and training projects.
      The Pana bodies (GH5/GH5S/G9 with latest firmware and S1 series) have great features and the only thing that is stopping them from dominating is their af system. It’s nice to have af when you’re in a one man crew situation or shooting sports or wildlife where your subject is simply not going to stand still for you to get focused. Canon and Sony hands down wins here, even Fuji and Nikon performs well.
      Am looking at the Canon eos r to possibly replace GH5 and A73 for hybrid use, but I may also wait out for the next version to see if they remove the 4k crop (but that means they need to change the body to handle heat), add 120 or more for slowmo, and add in-body ibis. Canon performs well at af and color and can’t complain about their lens lineup and performance
      Lastly, including myself, Fuji seems to not get much attention with their XT3 that seems to do well in stills and videos, has high bitrate, good af and colors, and lacking flip screen, ibis, and ff.
      As a prosumer, I own the GH5, A73, S1H as I am trying to see what works best for my needs and use case and it’s good to have so many options. We shouldn’t bog ourselves down on being brand loyal but rather loyal to our needs, use case, and budget. Not everyone has the same needs, use cases, and budget. And so we just need to know where’s our flexibility to live with the cons as every camera system has it.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  4 роки тому

      You make a lot of really excellent points! Our needs should come before brand loyalty for sure. I always try and look at the big picture for myself. I’ve seen great things from the Fuji, but realistically, I’m not going to change my lenses/batteries/etc to accommodate one good body.
      I’ve never used Panasonic’s offerings, but I have friends who swear by them. And the results are always very nice. 😎

      @The Enthusiasm Project, after this post, I saw the metabones ef to rf 0.71 ultra speedbooster is now available for purchase at $479 + shipping cost, video made by Dave from Kinotika.
      It solves for most of the 1.74x crop and reduces it down to about 1.23x crop which is manageable but only for video. I have the Sigma 18-35/1.8 for my GH5 + metabones.
      I think this is pushing me to try the eos r as prices for the bodies has gone down significantly, seeing it for below $1700.
      What ef or rf lenses do you recommend?

    • @freddumartin7878
      @freddumartin7878 4 роки тому

      @@nomad0714 yes I saw Dave's video too, I'll probably get this speedbooster, or maybe wait for the Viltrox less expensive copy. Not sure yet, because the 4K crop never bothered me so much, I adjust the focal length to frame as needed usually. But the additional stop of light is great. I also have a M50 with Viltrox speedbooster that I use as a C cam (or travel sometimes) and it works fantastic.
      Yeah I was thinking about the Sigma as well, but there's no IS. Not a problem on your GH5 with IBIS but you want IS on your lenses with the EOS R. How is the new GH5 autofocus update btw?
      My favorite lens for videos with the EOS R is the 16-35 f4-L-IS (with EF-RF adapter of course), the IS is really great on this lens and f4 is what I need to keep enough of my subjects in focus. It is literally 90% of the time on my camera, and the switch from 1080 to 4k gives you a 24-70 eq. with the crop, very useful. I will probably buy the expensive RF f2.8 IS version when Canon will release a more advanced version of the EOS R with better 4K specs and 120p. It's coming for sure when you look at their investment in the RF lenses, I will then sell everything else because it will be the undisputed king.
      I also like the 24-70 f4 IS and the 70-200 f4 IS. they are perfect for video with the IS and smaller than the f2.8 L line and you can get the whole trinity for less than $2,000 on eBay (for the price of just one 2.8 zoom L line). Now with the speedbooster they are f2.8 as well lol. When I need more light I use the Tamron SP35 f1.8 and the SP45 f1.8 both have IS (not as good as Canon L), and the (fantastic) Rokinon AF 14mm f2.8.
      If you have the money, go with the RF 2.8 IS zooms, they are just out of this world.
